Global Trade In Freefall: Container Freight Rates From Asia To Europe Crash 60% In Three Weeks

Tyler Durden's picture

Three weeks ago, when we last looked at the collapse in trade along what may be the most trafficked route involving China, i.e., from Asia to Northern Europe, we noted that while that particular shipping freight rate Europe had crashed some 23% on just one week, there was some good news: at least the Baltic Dry index was still inexplicably rising, and at last check it was hovering just above 1,100.

That is no longer the case, and just as with everything else in recent months, the Baltic Dry dead cat bounce is now over, with the BDIY topping out just above 1200 on August 4, and now back in triple digit territory, rapidly sliding back to the reality of recent record lows which a few months ago we suggested hinted that much more is wrong with global trade, and the global economy, than artificially manipulated stock markets would admit.

More importantly, a major source of confusion appears to have been resolved. Recall that as we noted on August 3, "many were wondering how it was possible that with accelerating deterioration across all Chinese asset classes, not to mention the bursting of various asset bubbles, could global shippers demand increasingly higher freight rates, an indication of either a tight transportation market or a jump in commodity demand, neither of which seemed credible. We may have the answer."

We did. To wit:

"Should the dead cat bounce in shipping rates indeed be over, and if the accelerate slide continues at the current pace, not only will shippers mothball key transit lanes, but the biggest concern for global economy, the unprecedented slowdown in world trade volumes, which we flagged a week ago, will be not only confirmed but is likely to unleash yet another global recession."

As expected, on Friday, we got confirmation that the BDIY has indeed become a lagging indicator to actual demand, when Reuters reported in its latest weekly update using data from the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, that key shipping freight rates for transporting containers from ports in Asia to Northern Europe fell by 26.7 percent to $469 per 20-foot container (TEU) in the week ended on Friday.

The collapse in rates is nothing short of a bloodbath: "it was the third consecutive week of falling freight rates on the world’s busiest route and rates are now nearly 60 percent lower than three weeks ago.

Freight rates on the world’s busiest shipping route have tanked this year due to overcapacity in available vessels and sluggish demand in goods to be transported. Rates generally deemed profitable for shipping companies on the route are at about $800-$1,000 per TEU.

Other Europe-focused freight rates did even worse, with container freight rates from Asia to ports in the Mediterranean plunging 32.1%, while those to the US West and East coast slid by 7.9% and 9.9%, respectively.

This should not come as a surprise: it was back in March when we first reported that "Global Trade Volume Tumbles Most Since 2011; Biggest Value Plunge Since Lehman."

It took the no longer discounting "market" about 6 months to figure this out. As for the culprit, no question who is at fault.

What happens next?

Well, some, such as the world’s largest container shipping company, Maersk Line, will desperately try to no longer lose money on every transit, with a plan to raise spot freight rates by $1,000 from ports in Asia to ports in northern Europe, with effect from Sep 1. Other major container shipping companies have similar plans.

The virtually guaranteed outcome of this "strategy", as there is simply not enough demand as the world careens off the global recession cliff to offset a surge in freight costs, will be an even greater collapse in trade volumes.

The alternative, is just as bad: as we sarcastically hinted first in March:

... none of the above should alarm anyone: remember - central banks can just print trade with just the flick of a CTRL-P switch.

And then again three weeks ago when we said no need to worry because it is just a matter of time before "central planners learn how to print trade."

For now, however, printing money no longer equates to boosting global trade. In fact, easy monetary policy now appears to be backfiring, as even the "market" has figured out.

So, sarcasm aside, what really happens next, to both shipping, trade, the global economy and markets? Sadly, unless central planning finally works after 7 years of failing ever upward... this.

Mass immigration keeps wages nailed to the floor and is privately welcomed by the UK government/elite.

Their biggest fear was a wage/inflation vicious circle, like the one which required double-digit interest rates to control in the '70s. Today that would put the vast majority of borrowers in default and implode the banking system (several times over)

Europe needs to collapse soon.  Hopefully a massive war as well.  Anything to save whites from extinction on the continent from which the white race hails.  No price is too high to stop the flood of non-whites into Europe.

Europe is fucked.  Abandon ship!  These people are not even remotely prepared to deal with millions upon millions of savage Africans and Muslims.  They are going to rape this continent into 3rd world status within 15 years.  Swedish and French cities are already there.

"They" were extremely effective at convincing white people to not have any children.  Feminism and birth control ensured the extinction of the white race.  Women wanted nicer cars and bigger houses instead of children to continue the genetic legacy their ancestors had struggled for millennia to pass down.  "2 children is enough" said the soccer moms.  "Replacement levels" said the yuppies.  "People are destroying the environment; we're causing global warming, climate change" said the propaganda.

I'm sure the non-whites will do just fine without us.  After all, there are so many thriving, peaceful, first world, productive non-white nations in the world.  Whites are less than 10% of the world population and are the ONLY race that is committing mass suicide right now.  All other populations are BOOMING due to abundant food, medicine, and modern technology given to them by whites.

When Randolph and Mortimer were ruined by the incessate selling (See USA cinema), they screamed, "we own the brokerage, we own the TRADING SPACE (PLACE), turn those machines back on!".

We saw this play out in '08.  The state sponsored frauds of bond rolling, mortgage packaging, balance sheet and money expansion, financial instrument dilation had run a certain course (well directed and protected), so a plunge was in order.  By doing so, the state could expand even further the supply of pretended wealth, could open the gates to open-sunshine even cheeky bond fraud, open-day pawn-shopping of dubious securities, open too every mind's reception the idea of quantitative easing or fabrication and counterfeit of the substantial. It paralled much the international easing of the consciences of the public toward enhanced interrogation.  TORTURE.  Torture now, torture for all.  Torture the ideas, the ideals, the storehouses, the repositories of wealth.  Destroy everything which everyman holds dear.

Body, Soul, Pocketbook, Conscience.  All subjected to enhanced interogative technique and quantitative easing.  Also called ass-whipping and asset-stripping.  Read through your constitution and bills of rights (USA'ers), or habeas corpus and Rights of Man, your body of law.  Like every holy and sacred scripture, it has been corrupted beyond recognition.  It is like engraved granite of beautiful platitudes where just beneath it a senate violates its pronouncements in the worst way.  A hard mortal beating beneath liberty's torch.

You know, of course, that the machines were turned back on and Mortimer and Randolph were made whole and even richer, while the entire body of massed humanity was diluted of their present and future assumed possessions.  What a magnificent transfer device, exceeding even a star trekkers' "Beam me up!", are fiat money and a captured gov't with private federal reserve.  Electronic confiscation without representation.

Funny this.  That the instrument with which the Fed was endowed with trust and integrity--the substance upon which they based every action and substantiated every trade was that thin yellow line! A metal which, in the depths of men's minds and souls, constituted the absolute CALL.  The call by which men could remove their confidence from an institution if ever it rotted so badly.  I want my money would have immediate restitution by a restoration of equivalent gold metal.  Indeed, they could redeem their saved labours and sequestered gains by exchanging paper for exceedingly rare and unique metal medallions.  Enough of a vote of no-confidence and the system would be force to honorable and honest restructure.

BUT,  Once having the universal esteem of their gentlemenly if stupid fellows, the RESERVE set about mentally and psychologically denigrating that by which they won their faith and place.  Why not crucify the gold?  Gold which early on was the great REDEMPTION, the token by which honesty was made simple for all, urbane and uncouth--began to be crushed and spit upon, thrashed and castigated, relegated to a superstition and relic.  Ah! but the echoes.  To the dustbin with metal and with your tiny influence in these great matters, slave!

Now WITH THE WORLD IN PRETENDED AND DIRECTED TURMOIL, where everyman is at the mercy of a strange system of trade where they have no suffrage and where their individual actions are scoffed at, and where their movements to protect what small cobbled ball of SAVING is only a tiny breath in the maelstrom--ONLY THEN and suddenly do they come to realize the wisdom of old, the O.G., the Old School, the millenial thread disregarded.  GOLD.  It may not be lamb's blood painted on lintels and jambs, to be observed by extraterrestrial and superhuman beings in the threshinghouse of this world's lord.  It may not be staffs which mock the wizardry of this world's elite by consuming and completely vanishing its magic.  It may not be tearing apart a great water so the simple and somewhat pure may pass on dry ground--but the ability to call out the scoundrels and scofflaws which host our financial institutions might have preserved this world's people from the awful depredations of this time.

We live upon a fallen planet that destroys every good and great thing AND attempts to exalt that which is contrary and froward.

Do not be surprised when find yourself weeping, wailing, and gnashing upon your teeth (at a minimum).  That which we allow by subterfuge and slow dilution to overtake us, that which we invite into our HOUSE by choosing every slight evil, that which we allow to slowly scour away our poignant conscience--That is what will rule us in the end.

Kill and crucify that which will hold and protect you.  Diminish those institutions which like watercraft carry you safely through your voyage with fellow travelers through this short but exquisite existence, and you will come to know what it is to be in the winepress of the lord.  Among the wheat and tares in the threshing floor or TRADING PLACE of the Almighty!

"Except for oil and NG, contrary to popular belief we do not have 100 years of either."

Not true.

According to the USGS back in the Carter years the US has over 3,000 years (thats three thousand) of NG just in the geopressured zone (South Louisiana and just offshore). This, according to my congressman at the time Dave Treen, resulted from test wells drilled here in Terrebonne Parish.

The Carter administration replaced the the head of the USGS with a political hack, re-wrote the final report to remove all references to the amount of NG and threw them down Orwells memory hole welding the cover shut.

If you were to suck out that much volume (or just a double digit percentage of it) what do you think will happen to the crust above the newly created void?  Just look at what is happening in California with the water they are pumping out to water crops for just one year.

"If you were to suck out that much volume (or just a double digit percentage of it) what do you think will happen to the crust above the newly created void?"

Nothing, as there will not be a "void"!

The NG is dissolved under great pressure. The could likely produce for hundreds of years before any measurable change is noticed. In their report the USGS said it was like "popping the top on a bottle of Champagne". There are hundreds of cubic Kilometers in this area. This would not be fracking. Fracking is totally unnecessary to produce from this zone which is already broken rock and sand.

You may remember this was back when Jimmy Carter (the Nuclear Engineer - actually a reactor operator - couldn't pronounce the word "nuclear", it was Nu-Q-lar - maybe that's some sort of code?). was trying to convince us that we had a "fossil fuel shortage". Instead of using this abundant NG we end up building a pisspot full of nuqular reactors now getting old, and the cost of decommissioning each will be about $2,000,000,000 each! Who is going to pay for that?

In the late 1980's 60 Minutes did a piece on this NG "deposit" but there was no reference to the huge quantity of NG.

I had a hard time figuring out how a micro wave oven could retail new for $29.

Consider the packaging, advertising, shipping of the unit across the Pacific and then by land to port and from port to destination, raw materials, engineering, manufacturer's overhead, retailer's overhead and profit.

The problem is the value of currencies.  We cannot expect a medical Doctor to barely get by in some countries while in other countries, just an invisible line in the sand in some places, to live like a king.

This will never be resolved in the current setup and war will probably ensue as the 99% will be pissed (Rise of D. Trump in polls as an example).  Central governments are too big and powerful and do not listen to their citizens.  The world is tired of manipulation, to the point where people who live in areas with great agricultural possibilities with plenty of water are poor as dirt and paper pushers in anthills of urban areas have yachts, McMansions and so on.

The military will be used to protect the paper pushers, the food producers will suffer and people will die, from bombs, bullets or starvation.

All because one country can print coin and get away with it and others cannot.

Something does not make sense in this whole picture.  Was it ever meant to be understood?

But they have to go to Vietnam or M.E. if they don't war in Europe...

Unless they can bring in millions of foreign migrants and have us Civil war with them... set up big government loans, and sell expensive weapons to our people.

I think humanity is about to learn some very hard lessons from the recent past that anyone with even a mediocre knowledge of history could easily see coming.

It's clear the the era of Money Printing bubble economics is now played out! That means fundamentals will beging to take over, Central Banks have used every tool, and printed trillions to correct the 2008 bubble burst. I for one never dreamed the Central Bank Money Printers could defy gravity THIS LONG! It really has been amazing to watch the market interventions the money printing, the who criminal hoax. But NOW, NOW we are going to finally correct and price discovery will rear it's ugly head. Everybody and their sister has been trading the Central Banks Policies. If that prop is losing it's steam, then Down is the only direction possible.

I suspect, one more attempt at massive money printing and huge stock buys, index buys and direct manipulation of prices, before the end game of Price Discovery takes over.

Seems that war is profitable, there is a grand network of people that only care about wealth or the interests of wealthy people. Probably lots of people are dupes and the people that die in World Wars, Vietnam, Iraq, Iraq II, Afghanistan... well it is for war profits, drug profits, for slave labor, for cutting US Labor Rates of the US Labor Force,... and for creating new slave labor.

But war works very well to pull in the Banker profits.

And Immigration can be both a cheap labor force and a flash-point to kill off 50% of all citizens.
