In Dramatic Escalation, China Sends Five Navy Ships Off Alaska Coast For First Time Ever

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as China celebrates the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II with an extravagant parade designed to showcase the country’s military prowess and project Xi Jinping’s power to nervous onlookers in the West, the Pentagon says it has spotted five Chinese Navy ships in the Bering Sea, just off the coast of Alaska.

Here’s WSJ:

Five Chinese navy ships are currently operating in the Bering Sea, off the coast of Alaska, the first time the U.S. military has seen such activity in the area, Pentagon officials said Wednesday.

The officials said they have been aware in recent days that three Chinese combat ships, a replenishment vessel and an amphibious ship were in the vicinity after observing them moving toward the Aleutian Islands, which are split between U.S. and Russian control.

They said the Chinese ships were still in the area, but declined to specify when the vessels were first spotted or how far they were from the coast of Alaska.

The Pentagon official said there were a “variety of opinions” on how to interpret the Chinese ships’ deployment.

“It’s difficult to tell exactly, but it indicates some interest in the Arctic region,” the official said. “It’s different.”

"Different" indeed, as in "uprecedented", and while we won’t endeavor to jump to conclusions, we would note that the PLA hasn’t exactly been shy when it comes to challenging the US from a maritime perspective of late and of course, the US has had its ships and carriers to the east and south of China for decades, so it would appear that Xi is intent on giving Washington a taste of its own medicine.

But don't worry, the Commander in Chief is on the scene - literally.

Finally, what better diversion from its crashing stock market on its national military holiday than for China to invade the US?

What a slap in America's face but our CinC (Chicken in Chief) has no clue.  Glaciers are more important to him but he knows no history that glaciers have been receding for 100's of years, CO2 levels are lower now then 20 years go, that billions of dollars in research grants create their own problems, and that "hot air" science is a myth except in Washington DC (which s full of it).  Go back to Kenya where you belong and leave the American people alone.  Although after your last trip there, they do not want you either.  On second thought, the Chinese ships may be there to ensure you do not try to go to China??!!

If WWIII goes down the arctic would be expected to be a major contention because the world isn't going to be awash in liquid fossil fuels as everybody has come to be conditioned to believe.  The shale boom wasn't engineered to provide oil it was engineered to provide cash from a ponzi scheme.  If there are oil and gas reserves in the arctic that have even reasonable EROEI then people will be clawing over eachother to secure it.  This is also why China is lending money to Venezuela to hold off the IMF.

Rather ironic considering all of the panic about carbon and dying polar bears that that place may end up being a major battle ground.  Can't wait to see how they spin this.

China has also said it wants to be in the negotiations among the nations that ring the Arctic Ocean - even though it has no frontage there.  It is trying to shoehorn its way into the group.  Could this little parade off the Aleutians be a signal that we should expect the sight of Chinese ships to be the new normal?

"Could this little parade off the Aleutians be a signal that we should expect the sight of Chinese ships to be the new normal?"

I would say absolutely.  I figure it is quid pro quo, Russia needs China's help to survive the US's aggression and China needs the resources down the road.  They may be bracing for something as well being that Obama has been sneaking around Alaska.

Tomorrow is China's Z-Day parade also.  Should be interesting.

China V-day parade: One of them is the Dong Feng-21D (DF-21D) antiaircraft-carrier medium-range ballistic nuclear missile, capable of engaging a moving target out at sea with the help of the Yaogan satellite constellation, delivered to orbit in 2006-2014. China's ‘Carrier-Killer’ has an alleged range of up to 2,000km and could be armed with either conventional explosives or a 300 Kt nuclear warhead.

Another missile expected to be on display on Thursday is the newest medium-range ballistic nuclear missile, the Dong Feng-26 (DF-26), a development from the DF-21. With a range of 3,500km it can reach foreign military bases, such as the island of Guam in the Pacific.

Also, Beijing is likely to present its newest strategic ballistic missile, the DF-5, which has an intercontinental range of 12,000km and could be armed either with a single, yet extensively powerful, 5 Mt nuclear warhead, or with 10-12 less powerful independently targetable warheads.

While this is a disconcerting development, the bigger picture reveals a bit of humor. That is, Zion stole the west, especially the American country, but forfeited title to much of it to the east.

Or put another way, the strife between the Zion controlled west, and the east, comes down to whether Zion will honor or renege on the east's ownership claims to parts of the west. Zion is anathema to "honor," so I would place my bets with "renege.".

Zion is a scheme, not an ethnicity..

To understand Zion, one must realize that Zion is a hidden fifth-column colonizer, plunderer, and exploiter of countries and peoples--parasites in our societies' bowels and brains. Comparatively, it would be as if a syndicate the size of Hong Kong had secretly colonized and come to control China, and then much of the rest of Asia.

I always forget the names. This list is missing a lot of stuff. I believe David Rockefeller was a Spy, Oil, Foundation Chairman, Banker, International Financier, Government Arm, and Diplomat(Unofficial)...

- The term robber baron derives from the medieval German lords who charged nominally illegal tolls (tolls unauthorized by the Holy Roman Emperor) on the primitive roads crossing their lands[4] or the larger tolls on ships traversing the Rhine[4]—all such actions without adding anything of value,[4] (see robber baron) but instead lining one's pockets to the detriment (added costs) of the common good.

Anglo-American empire's war with China is part of a longstanding, well-planned, global business strategy.

The new generation of PLA generals in Beijing are eager to establish their credibility and legitimacy by flexing their muscles in the Pacific.

The Anglo-American-NATO imperial military would love China to take the bait as a response to the "Pivot to Asia".

The threat from the "Yellow Peril" is good marketing for the business of empire: war.

I bought a chinese made 1 cylindr diesel engine and an ST generator head. Took the engine apart to make sure there was no casting sand left on the innards and it was pretty clean. I did have to adjust the rocker arms to get them square on the valve stem tips. The ST winding connections and brush holders were out of wack too, but those too were easy to align. I changed the ST bearings to NTN sealed units and all is fine. Ran a solid week during Hurricane Ike with no problems. Its solid, the assembly probably weighs 500lbs.

I think the things were assembled by amatuers, but otherwise I think ok.

Hitler called Switzerland the porucpine.

Everybody was armed and trained, many were accurate sharpshooters.

So, China is going to invade the U.S?  That would be pure suicide, as the U.S. has the largest armed civilian population in the world.

Maybe this comment was humor?

Finally, what better diversion from its crashing stock market on its national military holiday than for China to invade the US?

I'm pretty sure we have a bunch of stuff floating around in space that prevents ANYONE from doing shit. Kinetic orbital strike type stuff. Those NASA "X-37B Orbital Test Vehicles" were probably dropping off huge metal bullets that will fuck you up, and cannot be shot down.

China ain't doin' shit, but maybe asking us for food, water, and oxygen... in the coming decades that America continues to be the meanest fucking country this stinking orb has ever done seen. Bring it, China, little bitch!

If China were really dumb enough to think they could just march in without having to deal with the US population why start way up in Alaska?  Why not just wade into Los Angeles?  Good luck dealing with 'that' crowd!  And 'if' they did invade Alaska... then what?  March through Canada and invade Idaho?  Good luck with that one too because Canadians aren't going take that shit lying down either.

No, this certainly isn't any form of escalation.  China has every right to give a little demonstration just like the USA has done all over the world, every god damned day since the end of WWII.  I don't like it any more than Americans do, but really, I can't find it in myself to cast stones at China for this one.  It sure doesn't scare me any.

Not an escalation.

This kind of thing is standard procedure for national governments to send a message.  The US, Europeans, Russia, and most Asian republics do the same thing all the time... the smaller countries ask the larger ones to do it for them.

China is saying, "My markets are in trouble. Don't take advantage of me or there will be consequences."

And Also, "LOOK AT MY WING-SPAN AND BE AWED!!!   See how big I have grown since Nixon?  I can shake a stick at you by my self now, without Soviet backing!!  Aren't you proud of me?"

And if you're expecting anything more nuanced from a Nation-State's government than you'd see on any Grammar School playground, then they've really gotten you wrapped about their thumbs, haven't they?

China slipped an uninvited guest into the world’s largest naval exercise.

The U.S. invited four ships from China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) to the Rim of the Pacific 2014 exercise — a move that was hailed as a sign of improved military-to-military relations between the two countries.

But China also sent an electronic surveillance ship designed to monitor signals from the ships, right to the edges of the exercise.
