In Dramatic Escalation, China Sends Five Navy Ships Off Alaska Coast For First Time Ever

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as China celebrates the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II with an extravagant parade designed to showcase the country’s military prowess and project Xi Jinping’s power to nervous onlookers in the West, the Pentagon says it has spotted five Chinese Navy ships in the Bering Sea, just off the coast of Alaska.

Here’s WSJ:

Five Chinese navy ships are currently operating in the Bering Sea, off the coast of Alaska, the first time the U.S. military has seen such activity in the area, Pentagon officials said Wednesday.

The officials said they have been aware in recent days that three Chinese combat ships, a replenishment vessel and an amphibious ship were in the vicinity after observing them moving toward the Aleutian Islands, which are split between U.S. and Russian control.

They said the Chinese ships were still in the area, but declined to specify when the vessels were first spotted or how far they were from the coast of Alaska.

The Pentagon official said there were a “variety of opinions” on how to interpret the Chinese ships’ deployment.

“It’s difficult to tell exactly, but it indicates some interest in the Arctic region,” the official said. “It’s different.”

"Different" indeed, as in "uprecedented", and while we won’t endeavor to jump to conclusions, we would note that the PLA hasn’t exactly been shy when it comes to challenging the US from a maritime perspective of late and of course, the US has had its ships and carriers to the east and south of China for decades, so it would appear that Xi is intent on giving Washington a taste of its own medicine.

But don't worry, the Commander in Chief is on the scene - literally.

Finally, what better diversion from its crashing stock market on its national military holiday than for China to invade the US?

Methinks I smell a war on the horizon. The obvious answer when your economy is in the gutter and you owe another country a lot of money is to simply blow them to smithereens. It's not like anyone intends to pay their debts anymore.

That's one hell of a way to remove the debt. If only we could blow the FED to smithereens as well

Remember when everyone laughed at the trinkets and crap made in Japan in the 50's?

Same thing will happen in China, in fact it already is.

The very cheap crap they send to Walmarts in the USA because they want repeat customers (after it breaks)

The good stuff they sell to Europeans who don't like buying crap.

People like to imagine that the Chinese would invade Alaska. But they always forget that we now live in the nuclear age. Nobody can invade the US without nuclear retaliation.
WWII was 70 years ago. I don't expect to see any similar large scale war anytime soon.

Here is what is going on - in the Pacific China & the US are jointly trying to see off some resiliant ETs who are trying to settle here.

The US is over stretched so China is taking up some of the slack by covering the US whilst it is over stretched.

China is restocking its ships from places like san-fran:-

I sure hope the Chinese aren't bluffing. And I believe the Russians have something like ths:

"China’s defence ministry has been notably silent on the missile, other than to confirm in 2011 that it was in development. Western defence experts estimate it has a range of 900km-1,500km and that it may be able to travel at up to 10 times the speed of sound — faster than anything that could intercept it.

Like an intercontinental ballistic missile, the DF-21D goes into orbit, but after re-entering the atmosphere it is capable of manoeuvring on to a target, making it theoretically capable of landing a large warhead on or near a moving ship. China can also make about 1,200 of them for the price of a single aircraft carrier, meaning they could easily overwhelm defensive countermeasures.

Some analysts say such missiles threaten to consign aircraft carriers — which form the basis of current US naval strategy — to the dustbin, just as aircraft carriers themselves did to battleships with Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor."

It's the best way I can think of to stop the crazies in Washington and NATO from starting a war with China and Russia.

This is the beginning of the new normal for the island North America. After sanctioning Russia and the Whitehouse hypocritical theatre and bluster about Chinese hackers, then threatening sanctions against China, we should expect that the Chinese and Russians will walk softly and carry a big stick when it comes to dealing with the US government. It was once an American thing to walk softly and carry the big stick but those days are long behind us, the propagandists of America are the biggest loud mouths in the world and in the end, it is a sign of American weakness. Face it, it's the twilight of the American empire. Every war that the US has fought in the past 50 years has either been a loss or a significant strategic disaster. Perpetual war is just one more sign the empire is nearing its terminus. The national debt, social strife, poverty or should I say; wealth imbalance, corporatism, hyper surveillance, militarized police, 70% of young adults are not fit for military service (fat, lazy and/or weak minded), are all signs the country is sick.

China's army has no battle experience whereas US army has plenty of it.

China would be crushed. But there would not be direct war between two nuclear states - than we all die as nukes goes out. Also nor China, nor US would not benefit from such war as both economies are too much linked together. So there is no reason for such war.

It it highly unlikely that China would invade the U.S (especially at this time). China has been building a blue water Navy for the last decade and they are likely testing their capabilities and C3, while also using it as an opportunity to show Obama he's not the only one with spy tech (he basically got checked).
