Middle-East Migration - The Problem/Opportunity Dilemma

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Ben Tanosborn,

Pictures of migrant-exiles from the Middle East, not just Syrians but Iraqis and Afghanis as well, are currently being transmitted by CNN, Aljazeera English and other news giants to homes all over the world in customary repetition which most of us would agree exceeds the canons of proper news reporting.

Fodder news portraying human pain and misery are being presented to viewing masses, too often depicting unwarranted blame and/or lack of humanity from/by Europeans who are trying to cope with an inherited humanitarian crisis not entirely of their making.  Rich sister Germany is somehow expected to offer leadership, and problem-solving direction, in managing this new crisis for Europe.  Greece, Serbia, Hungary and Austria are becoming transit stations for this migrant humanity in the yellow-brick which extends from Turkey to the promised Oz: Germany.

Amid this crisis-in-progress, Viktor Orban’s racially-charged comments announcing a lack of desire by Hungary to increase its foreign-born population acquires the same timbre and tone as those of America’s presidential candidate, Donald Trump.  But aren’t these self-exiles supposedly “political” migrants, not the economic migrants entering the US overwhelmingly from Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America?  These migrant waves are branded, inaccurately perhaps, with the same umbrella term… whether their odyssey is motivated by economic, social or political reasons.  And, truth be said, the economic reason does weigh heavily or you wouldn’t have Germany and the United States as the two major preferred destination points.

There is ample reason to believe that this recent flood of migrants is economically, not politically-rooted.  Recent rumors in refugee camps heralded the strong probability that much of Europe was contemplating more restrictive policies for admittance.  Thus the onrush to reach the promised land of opportunity: Germany; with any other EU nation as a second, third, or nth choice.

As for who or what is at fault for this current situation, pointing to Bashar al-Assad and his autocratic regime may seem as the politically correct answer to most Americans, and thus justify US’ role in the world as a “benign and orderly empire.”  Except that this empire the US inherited from the Brits, and have transformed to its capitalist image and likeness, has proven to be neither benign nor orderly when it comes to Middle East matters as we evaluate historical American foreign policy towards each of the nations, or entities, in the region; but principally Palestine, Iraq, Syria and Iran during the past seven decades.

This long period of turmoil throughout the Middle East dates back to US’ ascendancy to the Anglo-American throne being vacated by post-Edwardian Britain in favor of its crown-princess daughter: young and prosperous America.  Thus the UK surrendered its leading meddling role to the US in a region extending from the environs of Palestine to Persian lands and the northern Arabian Sea.  But let’s back up to the “migrant issue”… whether resulting from political meddling, social, religious, or economic reasons.

Pope Francis is calling to the world’s attention this close to home crisis, asking for every parish to adopt a refugee family.  Maybe we shouldn’t question Francis’ charitable and humane intentions of caring for those who are suffering, those who are reaching for help with a supplicant hand.  The Vatican, however, as a trustworthy postulant to peace and social justice in the world, needs to voice not just a current remedy to the problem, a band-aid of sorts.  It must, if to be credible, also point to blame so that likelihood of repetition is at least lessened; however, the Church has often found compelling reasons to remain silent, thus accommodating her survival.

Today’s migrant problem, if labeled as a problem, is of a secular nature, and it should be tackled in economic, secular ways.  Angela Merkel appears to be an enlightened leader when she tries to calm the German citizenry in gladly receiving the current human avalanche from the Middle East.  Being at the tail end of the world’s birthrate statistics (842 annual births per 100,000 population), Germany must be rejuvenated from without to cope with upcoming economic requirements (pensions, etc.).  One could hardly find a better source for this rejuvenation than vibrant, educated Middle Easterners… from Syria (2,276 annual births per 100,000 population) or Iraq, with a similar birthrate, 2,695 per 100,000 – a more congruous and assimilable choice than trying to accommodate migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Perhaps both Donald Trump and Viktor Orban should take notice.  Hungary, with a low birthrate of 926 per 100,000 could harmoniously absorb a few thousands Muslims; and so could Italy, with a birthrate of 884 per 100,000.  As for the United States, its rate of 1,342 per 100,000 is achieved in great part to the “propensity to have children” of a large, undocumented Hispanic population from Mexico and Central America.

A problem can turn into an opportunity if tackled with a clear mind and a kind heart; seldom can it be solved with fear; and never, ever with hate.

I wonder if Syria will make the EU refugees pay Syrian income tax once they settle in their new countries. And of course, Syria will want to know if any of the refugees open bank accounts - or transfer or withdraw more than 50 euros (or 60 dollars) from one of those banks - especially if any of those transfers go to a terrorist organization like the Internal Revenue Service!

Why does the MSM keep saying they are 'migrants'? There is a difference between Migrants and Refugees or asylum seekers.  These are Refugees.

Having said that, Refugees are usually in tattered clothing, dishevelled, etc. It's just a glitch that these happen to be rather well dressed with no intention of fleeing to Islamic countries where they can live peacefully amongst their fellow brethren.

Says who?  Some problems are just problems, you can only make so much methane out of a shit sandwich, not really worth the bother.  Fear and hate are emotions because they are useful - for survival.  Don't tell me that's never appropriate.

Also don't start telling me it's "fear and hate" on my part when someone wants to invade my home, no matter how nice they are about it I'd just as soon shoot them first (bravely and sadly, perhaps, but not in fear and hate) and talk about it later, after all it's their mistake, invasion is NOT the same thing as a knock on the door and a polite request for aid or even resettlement.

Hopefully this is peak orwellian everything.  Our government and others slaughter by the millions and destabilize whole continents and then these same governments and the Pope tell everybody to have a heart and commit soverign suicide.... mmmkay.

It's so bat shit nuts that it's almost funny.  Apparently the Pope forgot that at least a quarter million are dead in Syria already and there is no telling how many more will die from starvation and violence that is linked to state sponsored terrorism.

Sanctions are starvation weapons and you don't hear that pious phuck complaining about the US and NATO trying to starve Russia either.  Starving populations is terrorism of the worst kind, of course the Catholic Church is quite familiar with these tactics as they used to be in league with the monarchies that perfected terrorism, torture and human suffering on a massive scale.

Tell that guy in the white dress that we want our historical record back out of the bowels of their church while we are at it.

When Syrian runs to Turkey looking for safety - he is a refugee. Because he crossed border from his country where is a war zone to its neighboring country where is not a war zone. He is safe there. His children are safe there. But when he decides to gamble with his and his family life and takes an illegal human traffickers boat to Greece. He is no more refugee but illegal economic migrant. Kid would not die if father would not leave Turkey seeking EU benefits. But they don't care about kids there - they even use them as human shields when attack Hungarian border patrol. Still, Hungarian border patrol does what they supposed to do – protects its citizens and country borders from illegal border crossing. Now, how low you can go to gamble with your children life just to get those EU social benefits and then when you survived that boat trip, you than use your kid as human shield? So this cartoon draws wrong conclusion on compassion.

There is much talk of this migration being an invasion, particularly because the vast majority of the immigrants shown in videos are young men of fighting age.

I find it curious that this "invasion" occurs just when Russia decides it's time to deal with ISIS in Syria. Perhaps these invaders represent the Brave Sir Robin fighters against Assad hightailing it out of Syria. There is a plenteous supply of women, children, and old people in Europe to make Europe an appealing destination to display their manly courage. Furthermore, Europeans are unarmed, which would send shivers down the spine of all but the most stouthearted ISIS fighters.

Man, ZH has hit a brand new low, preachign lies and spreading BS while the very same countries are in the Middle East killing the Arabs then telling the Arabs they are econimic refugees.

this was written by a cloudy thinking pinhead.

the vast majority of the people are most certainly economic refugees and not political refugees.  they are running from the countries which the usa / banksters / neocons have already wrecked to the ones they intend to wreck and are the tools of that wrecking.

if we assume that bordered tax farms need leaders and some rules then border protection and economic policies which should be set for the benefit of those putting politicians in charge.  the communist giveaway of those electors' rights and property is only a part of the deal when the tax cows agree to it.  it is highly unpopular in all european countries to bring hordes of uneducated foreigners inside those borders and put them on the dole.

the costs are obvious.  my retirement will be postponed, my insurance will go up.  supporting achmed and muhammed was not part of any social contract i signed up for.

of course this hard line should also presume that the weapons and policies these autocrats export to destabilize those same hellpits should be disallowed or the masses should all be forwarded to brussels or washington for their handouts.

It wasn't vacated "gracefully" but under the gun of Pax Americana during Suez Crisis, when the Euro-West (UK/France) were told to get the hell out of Oil patch's Dodge; as Uncle Sam would run the Ghawar show under the FDR Yalta and Suez handshakes, with Soviets and Saud respectively.

"Winds of change" said Macmillan sadly in 1959 as he wound down Rule Britannia's Cyprus presence, and as did de Gaulle the same year in his "the age of sail boats and kerosene lamps is over, we need a referendum in Algeria!"-- Same sad story of winding down empire and the rise of Pax Americana gunboat diplomacy along with the ICBM WMD sabre rattling to govern the world.

A hegemony NEVER goes with another hegemonial construct. After Potsdam it was three men in the same boat and two had to fall out!

FDR's dream of multilateralism of Yalta/UN and BW did not survive his death nor the cold war pronounced by Stalin at Potsdam : The Vatican how many divisions ?

Truman's reply was Hiro and Naga and that was that!

Once they see the real freedoms and wealth of Europe they will have no interest in returning to islamist dictators. They will build an ever expanding enclave of sharia law and demand the country they have run to, integrates to their sharia law. islam is a disease as deadly as liberalism.

hahaha!

Your debasement of Jefferson, Tom Payne, Benjamin Franklin is amusing. All dirty liberals as bad as the Wahhabis !

BTW : Sharia law was not the law of the first four caliphs including the originator Mohammed. In those days the Sunna was for each man to interpret according to his own soul as NEW convert. The only dogma was the Shahada. Not saying that those early caliphs were not conquerors spreading their religion by the sword like Charlemagne and Justinian did in Christian lands. That was a political game using religion to create spiritual unity towards a political END : Empire!

Even the other four pillars (fasting, 5 prayers, Hadj, charity tax) were subject to the individual's consent. He was not considered apostate if he deviated from the strict recommendation for perfect adherence. Islam, when young, was open book architecture. It was supposed to stay that way. The Umma were not conducted by rigid code set by a Pope.

Sharia was invented in Baghad during the reign of Haroun al Rashid, as was the house of wisdom that studied Aristotle. Sharia was a guideline that interpreted the meaning of the Sunna. There were four schools of interpretation; from liberal to literal (the conservative end).

Much later on in the 17/18 th century the conservatives went to bat shit fundamentalist under Wahhab in Saudi lands. We are now there as Saud's money has spread that version to suppress all other reformist  (shia, souffi) or more liberal Sunni trends.

As there is no church in Sunni Islam, the Caliph intepreted the Sharia in his Qanun (secular laws) importing what he felt as politically feasible from that version of the Sharia fiqh (interpretation) that he felt was kindred to his own soul. SO Islam never had continuity in the way Qanun meandered from pillar to post under different versions of Sharia interpretation by different kings in different muslim lands.

Today we have the worst interpretation that dove-tails perfectly with the West's neo-con 'towering colossus' unilateralism fed on messianic  Huntingtonian clash of civilization hubris.

Great ass holes always shit the same BS !

The best perspective about the ME conundrum in the US altermedia is provided by Yves Smith of Naked Capitalism (Robert Berke article) :

http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2015/09/iran-deal-may-redefine-the-middle...

I support this analysis as it lays out the changes that REALITY is obliging Pax Americana to make; all the while highlighting the quicksands in which the Saud/Israel axis is now finding itself in, vis a vis the new deal of Iran Rising.

(And pulesse ZH don't discount Yves for being a "snotty, socialist liberal" ...you'll need more substance to any rebuttal of her analysis for it to be convincing)

PS/ If as this article implies the momentum in favour of Putin gains ground in Eurozone; given the refugee crisis fallout; it may have longer repercussions in what concerns the energy scene between Mutti-Gazprom-Putin and that spells bad for the neo-con Nato/Ukraine stand-off strategy of US, à la Kagan-Nuland "FU Eu" stance.

All options are open and the US Oligarchy, as usual, makes the final call in geo-political terms, to the extent that its longer term financial and economic position allows it.

It'd be a start Azannoth, but it would only result in higher prices.

I've said it many times - we're fucked so long as we let the merchants run the show - Tribesmen or not.

Communism/socialism isn't the answer either, but when merchants become profiteers of the people's misfortune, to the point of driving down the birhtrate/driving up the deathrate, it's time to act.

Killing the bastards won't help other than to let off some steam.

What we need is a cultural revolution, where it is seen to be both unjust and not to be stood for to accept trade at any price.

This set of values needs to be held dearly by all strata of society - even those trading themselves.

It's okay to make a profit, but it's not okay to rob an entire culture of it's ability to reproduce.

Down with both profiteering merchants and socialists. How about some communal justice for once.
