Gun Sales Soar After Surge In US Mass Shootings

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as was evidenced after the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech, after Columbine and Tucson in 2011, and following the theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado in 2012, US gun sales have soared following the mass-shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, which killed 10 people and injured seven others. As The FT reports, gun sales this year could surpass the record set in 2013, when gun purchases surged after the December 2012 Sandy Hook murders.

As The FT reports,

Business has been brisk for Larry Hyatt, owner of Hyatt Guns in North Carolina, since the Oregon community college shooting last week that left 10 people dead, including the 26-year-old suspect.

Mr Hyatt saw an even bigger surge in customers after the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut that left 26 people dead, including 20 children, before the gunman killed himself.

...

However, the calls for tighter gun laws lead to an increase in weapons sales. “Once the public hears the president on the news say we need more gun controls, it tends to drive sales,” said Mr Hyatt, who owns one of the largest gun retailers in the US. “People think, if I don’t get a gun now, it might be difficult to get one in the future. The store is crowded.”

“We don’t want our business to be based on tragedy but we have to deal with what we have no control over,” Mr Hyatt said. “And after these shootings and then the calls for tougher gun laws, we see a buying rush.”

In the first nine months of this year, 15.6m of the background checks needed to purchase guns from federally licensed sellers have been processed, compared with the 15.5m applications in the same period in 2013, according to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

Strong sales this year have also boosted the earnings for the two of the largest gun manufacturers in the US. Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger & Co have seen their stocks rise this year by over 88% and 67% respectively.

As Wired wrote back in 2012, the sharp spike in gun sales following mass shootings is not a new occurence and appears to happen for several reasons...

The desire to protect one's self In many cases, gun shootings followed by 24/7 media coverage prompt citizens to arm themselves, according to testimonies. In Aurora, for instance, Jake Meyers of Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo told The Post shoppers cited self-protection when checking out new weapons. "A lot of it is people saying, 'I didn't think I needed a gun, but now I do,' " Meyers said. "When it happens in your backyard, people start reassessing — 'Hey, I go to the movies.'"

The fear of stricter gun laws Another logical factor is that gun owners' or soon-to-be-gun owners' sense a tide of gun control regulations following a massacre and seek to purchase guns ahead of fast-moving laws. Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, spoke to this following a 60 percent uptick in gun sales in the aftermath of the Tucson shootings in 2011. "Some Americans fear tougher gun control laws in the aftermath of Saturday’s attack so they want to stock up now," he told Politico. “What it shows is maybe gun owners in Arizona and these other states feel that there’s going to be some change in the law, which is what I hope our elected officials” trying to enact. Obviously, that fear has been unfounded. Since coming into office, Obama has been virtually silent on the issue of gun control, despite the protestations of liberals.

The feeling of uncertainty It's important to remember, spikes in guns sales don't just coincide with shooting sprees. They also coincide with violent events of any kind, as Fredrick Kunkle at The Washington Post reported. "People also rushed to buy guns after the 1992 riots in Los Angeles and the breakdown of order in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina." That has led some industry experts and law enforcement officials to point to a general feeling of uncertainty as a driver of gun buying habits. "People often buy firearms during periods of uncertainty," Gary Kleck, a researcher at Florida State University's College of Criminology and Criminal Justice, told the paper.

As Pew's most recent research found, America remains divided over the 'guns' issue:

Pew’s latest survey, conducted in July this year, found that opinions had remained largely unchanged since the Sandy Hook massacre.

Almost eight in 10 people surveyed supported laws to prevent people suffering from mental illness buying firearms, while 70 per cent backed the creation of a database on gun sales and almost 60 per cent wanted to see assault weapons banned.

“The public continues to be more evenly divided in fundamental attitudes about whether it is more important to control gun ownership or to protect the right of Americans to own guns,” Pew’s report said.

“Currently, 50 per cent say it is more important to control gun ownership, while 47 per cent say it is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns.”

Think of it this way:  When you are talking about going out to the market, getting some food, then coming back, you probably live in the safest time in the entirety of human history, or have lived through it.  At least in developed nations.  That may not be true in a year or five years, but it's pretty close to true today.  My area is a little less safe than the rest of the US, and I'm one of those guys who does stand out in a crowd, no matter what I do.  Most are cool with me.  But every so often, somebody who has something to prove fucks with me.  Don't do something so heinous that I'll feel guilty for not stepping in and don't fuck with me, and you're cool.  I won't fuck with you.  But fuck with me, and I won't play "fair" if I don't have to.

Sounds like you are taking a similar path to me. My second gun (after a shotgun) was an ancient Chinese SKS. Thing was so buried in Cosmoline I had to strip it all the way down to clean it. Had to replace the trigger group. But it was a great learning experience: now I can take one down and put it back together in less than 5 minutes. And that gun is NOT a piece of shit. Of course it was made 70 years ago, not in this age of cheap bullshit.

I bought my first firearm (1911, Colt Series 80) almost solely due to my repugnance of the emerging fact that TPTB here in California and everywhere else in the U.S.A. are hammering away trying to disarm the law-abiding.  I am now shopping around for my first long gun; and will add more as well as a few wee pallets of ammunition, while I still can.

I just got a Springfield 1911 and love it. Get my best groupings with it. As for long guns, I own a 12 gauge and an SKS, which shoots a 7.62 x 39 round that is really cheap and plentiful. Gun was $350; shells about $.25 each (in bulk). I like it because it has decent penetration ability, as compared to some AR's, and is pretty much the definition of 'most bang for your buck' (along with the AK47) for a mid-range combat rifle. Of course much better rifles exist, but when you're forced to stack silver over gold, it makes sense for the budget conscious.

If you look at where gun ownership is concentrated and where gun crime is concentrated, I think you'll find that it is not the gun per population that correlate with the gun violence.  In other words, it's not the guns--it's a social problem.

"A violent September in Chicago ended with more homicides than any other month this year and the second-most shootings, according to data kept by the Chicago Tribune's breaking news desk. Though the summer months in Chicago have traditionally been the most violent, shootings last month decreased little from August and there were about 50 percent more shootings than September 2014."

They want Whites to be completely defenseless against the colored majority. When a White defends him or herself .gov and the people of color lobby howl for that White's blood! The white middle class says nothing about the ongoing genocide of Whites, because they have been brainwashed by schools, churches, .gov, the televitz and Hollyweird. Our people are being slaughtered AND NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT IT!

What the Mainstream Media HIDE from you: http://newnation.org/

Jews and Jewish organizations lead the gun control campaign

Although Jewish organizations would not phrase it this way, the net result is that the thrust of Jewish activism has been to favor a strong central government with a monopoly on lethal force. Given Jewish hostility to the traditional people and culture of White America, this is a very foreboding combination as we head into the era of a non-White majority America.

The most important thing a father can do is purchase a quality hand gun and rifle for his kids, because at some point they may be unable to purchase any for themselves. Store them if need be, and when the kids are old enough, teach them proper respect for fire arms, teach them how to use and clean them, and say a prayer that they will only ever need to use them for recreation/hunting and not for self defense.

Like gold and silver, when you think you or your children need a gun, you won't be able to get one.

If guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns. ... Yep, and badges too oftimes.

If you think disarming the citzentry is a grovey idea you better take a close look at life for the common unarmed peons in Mexico. Between crooked shakedown policia, narco cartel gunmen, rogue army units (Zeta types) and kidnappers for hire (cheap) the place is crawling with ways to get shot, stabbed, robbed, decapitated or held for ransom.

We (USSAers) don't get much news coverage about it but there are ambushes, shootouts, mass murders and general mayhem incidents daily in parts of ole Mexico. They sometimes kill a dozen policemen, or soldiers or banditos or bystanders per,...aaah, flareup.

I don't know about everyone else but I'm keeping my warm gun until I sort out who the real bad guys are. I don't want to hand my firearm to the wrong band of outlaws and then later regret my choice. The goverment has been looking a little outlawy and a little thuggy to me lately. ...... Just like in Mexico.

Oh, and yeah Mexico has a pretty tight firearms ban so just possessing a gun to protect yourself from the outlaws, with or without badges, makes you an outlaw too.

I need to let you all know something...I know why they picked Oregon for the shooting...Oregon has lienent gun laws and have lower homocide rate than Canada.  Oregon needs to be made an example of.  Its not guns that kill people, its the CIA and Langley that kills people.

Many say the U.S. has many gun related homocides.... No, the U.S. does not... Chicago, New York, Los Angeles etc are where are the shootings are and they have strict gun laws...wake up people.  The entire state of Oregon had like one homocide until this shooting...Now I know why TPTB picked Oregon for the set up shooting.

The ones who are really afraid are the ones who have to steal to have a bank account full of money. The ones who can't fill their accounts fast enough by robbing the people.  Not those of us with guns.  They are the scared ones.  Why wouldnt you be scared if you are a thief?  They understand the people realize they are crooks, so they want to take our guns away.   I don’t fear because Im Semper Paratus.  Ive owned a gun since I was eight, Ive never known a different way? Why would I fear?  I dont fear much, except maybe TPP.  This administration has been responsible for more gun sales than anyone else in history?  Maybe if they calmed down a bit?  Nothing stokes guns sales like the threat of a civil war.

If they started focusing on the economy, the rest of this B.S. would resolve itself.  They will never take/get my gun, which is the constitution protecting us.  Especially with the control they have been exerting on us.  Our leadership, both sides is FUCKED.

Adam Lanza'a mother thought that firearms training would help her son with his emotional problems.  Also, IIRC, Chris Kyle also thought that taking Eddie Routh shooting would help him with his depression.

The "crazy" thing is, firearms training CAN help with some of these problems (building a sense of responsibility, etc.), but it is very individual specific and not something that one can experiment with without really knowing what one is doing.  Failed therapy can obviously lead to the most tragic outcome.

Here I go repeating myself. Ask yourself. Just WHERE did a government of enumerated powers obtain the power to PROHIBIT in the face of the second amendment? Answer. The second amendment is IRRELEVENT as to the application of the enumerated powers being applied through the federal gun control acts.

In order for one to understand how the federal jurisdiction is being unconstitutionally extended to the citizen, you must understand the legal context in which the powers being exercised are properly applied. There is an area of regulation that lies outside the scope of the second amendments protections. Manufactureres and dealers (FFL) would be classified by the courts as engaged (ACTIVITY) in a taxable business/occupational privilege affecting the health, saftey of the second amendment rights not possessed by the licensee. The federal LICENSE, as confirmed by the USSC is an operation of the federal TAXING POWER. AKA privilege excise tax. The PROPERTY (taxable item moving in commerce) must be identified. The LAW requires serial numbers. Next the taxable item moves in commerce to the DEALER. IN LAW this is called TRANSFER. Paperwork must be filled out to a tee. The PROPERTY is subject to SUMMARY ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL (batf) as it moves from manu to dealer. The PROPERTY can be SIEZED and FORFIETED for failure to adhere to any aspect of the law. That is administrative AND criminal penalties. Once the firearm is possessed by the DEALER more paperwork and tracking. Once sold to the citizen upon which the second amendments prote ctions are to kick in, the federal jurisdiction is suppose to end. BUT IT DOES NOT.

YOU want to buy the firearm? Great. Go to the dealer (FFL) and fill out the paperwork. THE LAW (GCA of 1968 and amendments) requires YOU to fill out BATF form that RE TRANSFERS the firearm to YOU under the exact same summary administrative power as if between MANU and DEALER. STOP!!!!!! Do you believe the courts of LAW and EQUITY give TWO SHITS who is subject to these summary powerrs along the chain of TRANSFER???? Does the federal taxing power NOT belong exclusively to the LEGISLATIVE BRANCH????  Do you understand the POLITICAL QUESTION DOCTRINE under SEPARATION OF POWERS???? The courts cannot and will not interfere. NOT EVER.

So why do these gun rights organizations with their multi million dollar budgets continue to jump up and down on the second amendment when THAT is NOT the issue???? The issue is the FEDERAL ACT that extended these SUMMARY POWERS beyond their proper context. Look at it this way. Your firearm is your PROPERTY. A right of property means NOTHING without a proc ess of law to protect it. That PROCESS has been displaced through the extention of the federal jurisdiction taxing power and now YOU have NO STANDING to argue that ONGOING SUMMARY ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL over your firearm is UNREASONABLE under the second amendment because as said before the powers being exercised are NOT limited by the SA.

YOU dont own your firearms as PROPERTY is defined, understood, and constitutionally protected. Not even the constition prohibitions against ex post facto laws will come to your aid. SUMMARY CONFISCATION is beyond the courts power to interfere. Again all due to the requirements of the GCA of 1968. WHY DOES THE NRA NOT UNDERSTAND THIS???? Why cure a disease when you can get filthy rich treating the symtoms? Ask the pharma industry.

More die in auto accidents, general accidents, suicide and poisoning

Sandy Hook never happened; the disease the "accused" had was debilitating in the area of balance (physical).  He had a 100% kill ration in less than a minute.  That would make a Navy Sea or Army Ranger totally envious.  It never happened and it is why they immediately fenced it, refused anyone in, and bulldozed the spot; compare that to Columbine, which was a real event in real time and real victims and is still standing.

See RedSilverJ on YouTube for in-depth info on Sandy Hook and Boston bombing, another hoax with crisis actors.

People are falling "hook, line & sinker" for the gun-control propaganda; at this rate we will lose that liberty as well and within a generation, about 40 years, we will go the way of Australia.  People do not seem to understand that the "bad people" will always do their crime regardless of any law(s).

They also seem to fail in understanding that "slippery slope" of allowing the "gun control" psychopaths to determine subjectively what constitutes "mental illness".  The hypocrisy is the admission of the massive failure of the field of psychology in relation to "helping" & failure of the pharmaceuticals in helping.  The definition of mental illness will surly be expanded to cover as many as possible.  A false accusation by a stranger or you once took a prescription or a single note in a medical file will be the standard.  Just give them a TV, cable and a SMART phone and "Everything Is Awesome".
