Stockton, California Mayor Anthony R. Silva attended a recent mayor’s conference in China, but his return trip took a bit longer than usual. At the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) this week, agents with the Department of Homeland Security detained Silva and confiscated his personal cell phone among other electronics. According to comments from the mayor, that may not even be the most alarming part.
“Unfortunately, they were not willing or able to produce a search warrant or any court documents suggesting they had a legal right to take my property,” Silva told SFGate. “In addition, they were persistent about requiring my passwords for all devices.”
The mayor’s attorney, Mark Reichel, told SFGate that Silva was not allowed to leave the airport without forfeiting his passwords. Reichel was not present for Silva’s interaction with the DHS agents, either. The mayor was told he had “no right for a lawyer to be present” and that being a US citizen did not “entitle me to rights that I probably thought,” according to the paper.
Evidently, Silva was well aware of the situation and only had his concerns heightened by first-hand experience. Talking to SFGate, he briefly compared the government battle on privacy to notorious dictatorships worldwide.

I was in Chicago airport last year. The queue was two hours long to get through customs!
My friends were waiting outside to collect me but told me that this is not unusual.
In the queue was a mother carrying a baby that was maybe 3-4 months old. A lady beside me asked if the mother with the crying baby could skip ahead. The security guy said, "no".
Just would not happen in Europe.
I was shocked by the inefficiency and treatment of tourists visiting the US, (I was going over for a friends wedding = tourist).

Chicago O'Hare is one of the most disgusting airports going. I had to fly in there a few years ago. What a vile dump. I could not wait to leave that hell hole. Detroit has a nicer airport because it is not actually in Detroit.
US Customs is awful. UK Customs is also pretty creepy. The British act like they are so polite and everything but the place is like a police state with the police and security services. The Germans, from years ago experience, were very good.
The thing that is really ludicrous about the entire thing is that the TSA has not made air travel any safer from terrorists than it was when you just walked through the metal detector at the airport years ago. Routinely, individuals that test the security of airports are able to smuggle a variety of weapons past TSA inspectors at a success rate of > 90%. Essintially, other than costing the Country a fortune through taxes to pay the TSA employees, fees tacked on to airline tickets and just the general inconvenience of dealing with them at the airport (which is now not dissimilar to spending the day at the DMV) they serve absolutely no purpose other than the politicans have created another class of Federal union employees that will expedite the draining of the entire system while claiming it is necessary to protect us from the boogey man.

Friend of mine was going through Terminal 3 at Heathrow a few years back. Pissed off at the "security" - doubly so when he saw a burka-clad creature go through without a search because her/his husband objected. My friend pointed this out and was taken out of the queue and detained until he missed his flight. This is how far the West has fallen.

Figure $800 Million at today's rate of wages $45,000. This is like 16,000 employees. A real Agency. And even if the yearly budget for employees was a step up for high education it is still a big agency.
So, what is the DHS, how to look at it's construction, testing labs, facilities, training facilities to understand the Size.
I'm pretty sure the FBI is only like 16,000 employees even if the wages would be higher. Seems like FBI budget is only $16 Billion today or near that (Facilities, Labs, Testing, Contracts).
Looks to me like the FBI is very Effective at a low cost rate. Actually looks like a power play that leaves the FBI in second class or under DHS and Pentagon Black Programs.

The Good Mayor needs to think OUTSIDE the box before his next trip:
1) Use a cloud service, then encrypt and upload anything sensitive to it. He should not keep anything on his computer of any sensitivity when going outside of the USSA, especially at an airport. At his destination, hopefully in a secured Wi-Fi environment, he can fetch and download his goodies.
2) When the goons ask for a password, he should already have each program and the computer itself set to "fuckyou" so he gets to answer each inquiry with the literal answer they demand. Bonus Points if he smiles, especially when they suspect he's lying to them. Some programs do not allow a space between characters in a password, so he will need (at some point) to disclose that. The humor value should be relished in silence though. There are far too many power bunnies and rump rangers in that group!
3) If using the Tails live OS, absolutely use the Windows camoflauge that the latest versions provide! Of course, I doubt he's quite sharp enough to heed that in the first place.
4) Bring a computer with an issue. When TSA insists on screwing with it, you can conveniently blame the nosy-a$$ed agent for breaking something. Even though you may not get to sue them easily, you can nevertheless raise a gigantic stink which makes the news.

At least 5 years ago, I decided to never take my computer or cell phone with me while travelling. I leave my phone at home wrapped in aluminum foil. As I have an artificial hip joint, I am always given a pat-down search. I have found the TSA folks at Miami to be courteous, but not at other US cities. At Syracuse, one agent was so hostile I was afraid he was going to get physical. Being retired, it is not inconvenient to be without electronics for a few days, as I can borrow same from family. But for business travelers they are clearly a necessity they cannot do without.
Try Austin... It was the most upsetting and surreal experience's I ever had (that place is really weird and they brag about it). He told me about his youth staying at a jewish summer camp in Maine. I was a Fire Chief in the area and the idiot repeatedly kept asking me the same questions over and over. with which I replied "I went down to see my new born granddaughter".... I was about to make the local news with the little bastard and he finally backed off, My flight was 2 hours late and I was polite and courteous and showed the little prick ID etc after doing that checking in. Upon arriving home I hade a "nice"note (which I framed btw) from them in my baggage stating that it has been searched. Nothing was missing and hope that my smelly socks and underwear amused them.
Fuck Austin. I will fly to SAT next time even though I need a connecter flight. Maybe I will drive the 1700 miles next time instead.

Last time I went to China, I took a Chromebook with Ubuntu booting through Crouton. I uploaded all of my pics and files to my home server from Korea / China (using a VPN or SSH tunnel, respectively). Then I wiped the machine on the plane just before landing. It takes 15 minutes to restore to factory.
I was not stopped this time, but I'll be ready next time I go overseas, just in case.
Another thing you can do is to encrypt your hard drive, copy the master keys off the disk to a file (which you encrypt and upload to the cloud), then scramble the key sectors. While going through the airport, you DON'T HAVE THE KEYS (or access to your files, but you can boot from a Linux USB for browsing and stuff). When you get to your destination, you download your keyfile and restore it. You use your system overseas, and you repeat the process just before coming back. If they ask you for your password, you tell them, "I am following business protocol, which means I DON'T HAVE THE KEY TO GIVE YOU."
I like this idea, except for one thing... they can still confiscate your laptop just out of spite. I like the previous idea better, because it looks pretty innocuous. You give them the key (log into the Chromebook with a secondary account with innocuous files), and go ahead and let them log in. Just don't let it out of your sight. In England, they were actually installing malware and keystroke loggers on some computers! If they take it out of your sight, well, it's a Chromebook! It's cheap! It costs $150 or cheaper if you get it used. You can count it as part of your travel expenses, and just throw it away, give it to someone, or wipe it and put it on CL.

about 6 years back had some work in a South Korean Goernment Datacentre in Taejon. You have to submit your laptops to the security desk for inspection and they put some USB do-hicky thinggy on it to monitor/prevent whatever....

Not sure which case it is but but the courts have ruled that electronic devices can be considered in the same fashion as a locked briefcase when encountered at a port of entry. For instance if you present yourself at a port from a foreign country, CBP can demand you open all luggage and possessions for inspection. A briefcase may contain contraband and financial instruments or evidence of criminal/terrorist links so they have a right to inspect it. In the same way, a computer/phone might have electronic files like child pornography or other documents of a criminal nature. Would you say anyone can enter the country and refuse to open a locked briefcase/bag if requested?
You have no right to refuse a search of your person and effects when presenting yourself for inspection when trying to enter the country. You never have. No warrant is necessary, that would be chaos.
You know perfectly well what the issue is here, it is a matter of degree. No one is suggesting that the US abandon soveriegnty, however, the US regularly demands that other countries abandon their soveriegnty when it comes to US citizens. Just got back after traveling in several other countries for the past few months and it is such a drag being back.
Not once did we have any issues or get any attitude from customs officials (Japan, Thailand, Vietnam).
First we get tough guy attitude from several customs agents at SFO and then have a horrendous TSA experience going from SFO to our next destination.
I think my wife (who is Japanese) is finally starting to understand why I refer to this shithole as the USSA...

I live 150 miles from the USA. I haven't been there since 1988. It was bad enough back then. I stay away for my own good, because I DO NOT TAKE bullying well. I'd end up behind bars for sure, just because I fight back, not because I would have done anything wrong. Blame it on the Irish in me I guess. I view the US as a trap for anybody who dares stand up for their rights, which includes basic human dignity.

Hong Kong has the easiest entry procedure of any place on earth. From gate to ground transportation in 7 minutes. Especially when you get a good gate on arrival. If you get a higher gate number it might take a bit longer, but that's academic; it's just rolling walkway time. It takes more time to take a whiz in the toilet than pass through customs. I did it once in Seoul in about 10. Haneda and Narita about 15. Although the Japs and Koreans did start finger printing. I tried to avoid traveling to either until business forced me to. What's more insidious in Japan, the Jap gubmint forces hoteliers, that is private businesses, to make copies of your personal travel documents. No security there. Your personal data could literally be anywhere in the world. If it is, try remembering if you've stayed at a Japanese hotel in the last 6 years. Zero personal data security of your travel documents If terrorists want to get ahold of massive personal data, Japan is the place to do it. How secure you think the servers are on mom and pops inn? Exactly. But the law requires them to copy your personal shit.
Rest of Asia you fly through customs pretty fast. Thailand it's just too many tourists and the military police run customs. I've found through most of my travels that the more corrupt the government the easier it is to get through customs. They just don't give a shit. That puts Thailand right up there. Corrupt as fuck.
Places like Oz and Britain seem pretty eager to trot behind the US. Oz you have to file for digital entry permit prior to travel and they also threaten searching your digital media, though it's actually never happened to me; Britian the customs people are eager to mimic the US. One fat grumpty Brit bitch held me at customs once for 40 minutes going on and on over my travel itenary while hundreds of mideastern ISIS-looking fucks flowed past us. Sidenote... hate to say this... but as a whole... Brit women the most hideous women in the world. Wow have they let themselves go. And vulgar. Jesus.
Elsewhere in Europe customs people are mostly bored bureaucrats and just don't give a shit. Latin America, same. Bureaucrats everywhere pretty much cut from the same mold. Underpaid, pedantic, beaten to death by the monotony of their mediocre existence.
Only been to few African countries. They do more security theater. Lot of huffing and puffing and angry staring at places, otherwise big smiling lackadaisical dont-give-a-shit. Mind you, time of day of your arrival plays a role in the sort of treatment you get in a lot of places. Or how big or small the airport; or how many flights are dumping pax at customs simultaneously.
But yeah, bar NONE... the US customs takes the cake. You'd think people stopped coming to the US just for the insane treatment they get at Customs, but somehow, no. Just goes to show what a fucking pathetic species humanity has become. I rate going through US Customs right up there with root canal without sedatives. You understand why big executives start pooling to fly private more and more. Apparently the private plane crowd is still stuck in the 60s qua treatment by the Customs Nazis.
US is the only country in the world that treats its own citizens like fucking criminal suspects on reentry. In every country the customs reentry I've described with a broad brush is for foreign nationals. Residents most everywhere fly through their own customs. That's a given. Not the US.
It's a fucking prison already. Make no mistake. If customs is a Bill of Rights Free zone, what's the fucking point of the passport anyhow? I wonder that every time. Apparently you don't have the right of automatic reentry. The passport is meaningless. Maybe time to give it up.
Too bad. Used to be proud to be an American. Long time ago. Every time I have to go to some embassy or consulate to get some snafu sorted I notice how that place is full of locals with US documents. Used to be the US embassy in XYZ was full of Amecian business people or American students. You know, people from Idaho or Iowa or Kentucky. New Yawkurs. These days its locals from XYZ who somehow have US passports who don't speak a word of English. But there they are waiving their little US passports around like they were standing next to Washington when he crossed the Delaware. Everywhere. It's like they're giving the shit out like candy. Surreal. And not a single one speaks English. That's the US Citizen Services Section too. Makes your fucking head spin.

Happened to me this summer. I'm a 25 year expat living in Asia who returns for about a month a year. Chicago customs demanded all my passwords, and not wanting to miss a flight to Milwaukee, gave them. They were so aggressive and accusatory, I felt terrorized. They asked about everything from a pair of scissors in my checked bag to my prescription drugs. And on my device were some photos of fully clothed attractive girls. They reminded me it is illegal to have sex with minors and said it in the most nasty way. I was traumatized for weeks after that.
Then on the way out of the country, I thought I was free and clear on the jetway in San Fran when a couple goons singled me out and pulled me aside to interrogate me and count all of the money I was taking out of the country...
