Russian Warships Launch Missile Attack On Syrian Targets, Clearing Way For Iran Ground Invasion

Tyler Durden's picture

In case it wasn’t clear enough what was set to happen soon after the Russian air force had spent a few days softening up anti-regime positions on the ground, allow us to spell it out: with the opposition on the run thanks to five days of aerial bombardment, Iran will now send in the Hezbollah/Shiite militia/Quds clean up crew, who will personally ensure that whoever is left in the wake of the Su-34 strikes is swiftly eliminated at close range.

You see, this is how you conduct an actual war and you needn’t be a West Point graduate to understand it. Russia has essentially debilitated Assad’s opposition from the air and now, Iran will (both figuratively and literally in all likelihood), simply walk up and execute anyone who’s left and that, as they say, will be that. Of course Damascus will get to claim that the SAA emerged victorious with the help of Russian air support, but in reality, there is no SAA. Just as we said weeks ago, the ground campaign is being orchestrated from Damascus by Quds commander Qasem Soleimani. Here’s Reuters:

The Russian government says its Syria deployment came as the result of a formal request from Assad, who himself laid out the problems facing the Syrian military in stark terms in July, saying it faced a manpower problem.

Khamenei also sent a senior envoy to Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin, another senior regional official said. "Putin told him 'Okay we will intervene. Send Qassem Soleimani'.

"Soleimani is almost resident in Damascus, or let's say he goes there a lot and you can find him between meetings with President Assad and visits to the theater of operations like any other soldier," said one of the senior regional officials.

What’s going on here really couldn’t be much clearer. Iran is simply taking over Syria with the help of the Russian military juggernaut and as we’ve documented exhaustively, Putin gets to spin the entire Mid-East power grab as a “war on terror.” Here’s AP (reporting from Beirut by the way, so just Google “Hezbollah, Iran, Lebanon,” and draw your own conclusions about who’s feeding them these headlines):

Syrian troops, emboldened by Russian airstrikes, launch a ground offensive against insurgents.

Again, there are no “Syrian troops.” They were defeated a long, long time ago, but there are most certainly dozens of fierce Shiite militias from Iraq and there’s always Hezbollah and when you combine these groups with the Russian air force, what you get is a formidable land/air military presence and now, Moscow is also firing on anti-regime targets from the sea. Here’s RT:

Four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 missiles at the position of the terrorist group Islamic State in Syria, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced. The missiles were fired from the Caspian Sea.

“Four missile ships launched 26 cruise missiles at 11 targets. According to objective control data, all the targets were destroyed. No civilian objects sustained damage,” Shoigu said.

The missiles flew some 1,500 km before reaching their targets, probing their efficiency.

The missile attacks came from Russia’s fleet in the Caspian Sea, which borders Russia, Iran and three other littoral countries. The precision weapons hit all intended targets.

The attacks apparently required cooperation from Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to travel through their airspace to reach Syria.

Yes, “the attacks apparently required cooperation from Iran and Iraq” which we certainly imagine wasn’t too difficult for Moscow to obtain, because as we outlined in “Mid-East Coup: As Russia Pounds Militant Targets, Iran Readies Ground Invasions While Saudis Panic", this was the plan all along. Skeptical? That's ok, just consider the following out today from WSJ

Iraqi Shiite lawmakers and militia leaders are urging Russia to launch airstrikes on Islamic State militants in their country, an escalation that would heighten tensions with Washington and increase risks of a clash between the two powers.

Since Moscow began bombing opponents of the regime in Syria last week, Iraq’s Shiite politicians, who dominate government, have been largely united in their praise of Moscow’s intervention and in calls for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to invite Russia to join the battle. Mr. Abadi said he would welcome Russian strikes as long as they were coordinated with the U.S.-led coalition’s air campaign against Islamic State in Iraq.

“We welcome Russian airstrikes in Iraq to help hit Islamic State headquarters, target Islamic State supply lines from Syria and target the oil smuggling lines,” said Moeen al-Kadhimi, a spokesman for the Badr Corps, an Iranian-backed militia and political party that plays a front-line role in fighting Islamic State. “We welcome Russia as they have advanced military technology and can help with intelligence.”

For Moscow, any involvement in Iraq would be even more complicated than its current Syria gambit. A Kremlin play in Iraq is likely to spotlight weaknesses of U.S. policy there, while exposing the contradictions in the Iraqi government’s dueling alliances, said Anthony Cordesman, a longtime Iraq analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“It would be difficult to sustain congressional support for an Iraq playing off Iran and Russia against the U.S.,” he said. “The administration would have very tough calls to make.”

Options would include leaving Iraq or finding a way to operate in parallel with Russia and Iran, raising questions about broader U.S. goals in Iraq.

“We don’t really have a strategy, just a set of short-term engagements,” he said.

No, Washington doesn't "really have a strategy" in Iraq, but do you know who does? Tehran. And the very same General who is running the Syrian gound war from Damascus and who Putin sent for directly to organize the entire campaign has long been known to control these Iraqi Shiite lawmakers and millitia leaders and now, Russia is apparently set to just kick the US out of Iraq altogether.

And while Russia literally takes over the Mid-East, the West is busy trying to find silly excuses to claim that Moscow is in violation of NATO members' sovereignty. Here's CNN:

Russian involvement in the 4½-year-old Syrian civil war seems to be escalating, with NATO's secretary general confirming Tuesday a second incursion by Russian planes into Turkish airspace and saying Russian ground troops were in Syria as well.

"It's unacceptable, it's dangerous, and it's reckless behavior and it adds to the tensions," Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told CNN about the incursions into Turkish airspace.

"We see the violation of the Turkish airspace becomes more important, more dangerous, because it happens in a context where we see more fighting, more Russian military presence in Syria."

So basically, Washington wants the public to focus on some Russian fighter jets that may or may not have accidentally crossed into Turkey's airspace, because after all, the good folks in Ankara are allies of the West, and because they are allies you should pay no attention to the fact that the Erdogan government is systematically exterminating its political opposition in the name of a fake fight against the very same group of terrorists who Putin is actually fighting. In other words: NATO is crying foul because Moscow, in its attempts to fight the terrorists that Turkey has helped to support all along, accidently flew a few miles into Turkey's airspace.

As you can see from the above, the Western hypocrisy and outright panic is accelerating here as Washington is simply bewildered about what to do next. Meanwhile, the Russian military has, in the space of a week, cleared the way (literally) for an Iranian gound invasion in Syria on behalf of Assad. Once that's finished (which, if recent events are any indication, should be in about two weeks), the entire campaign will shift to Iraq, where the US will either need to confront Russia or simply pack up and leave.

On the "bright" side, open war between Russia and the US would be great for GDP growth...

I am not so sure anymore.   Their stuff is not very good.  I think the Russian stuff is all now a generation ahead.  Saudi M1s, Bradleys, MRAPs and other stuff being taken out by 1970s anti tank missiles.  Russian fighters are superior to F-35 and the F-22 is a hangar queen.

The Russian missiles including anti-ship missiles are top of the line.  Their ECM and jamming stuff appears to be very advanced.  I think US defense manufacturers export market will shrink.

One web site said the Germans, French and Italians could leave NATO.  I think Russian defense companies will start getting a lot of global business.

Several TV shows of the new season are already using Syria, Russia, et al as foils to explain why bad things are happening.

(OK, I know TV is frowned upon here, but I do like background noise when online. I'd say that sites like ZH need some streaming background music, but then I'd probably exceed my monthy allotment of bits and bytes.)

Well if the time line of Putin's put in Syria is what it is made out to be, the walk down the ISIS corridor by the Shia brigade should take exactly one month!

Then if I understand the spiel outlined here, the show moves on to Iraq; from Mossul to Baghdad !

Another month and Syrac is an Iranian cum Russian colony all the while Mr Fabius of France talks about interdicting "barrel bombs" in the UN and investigating Assadian crimes by use of chemicals on which the documented proof is irrefutable!

And Potus along with the Pentagon brass hats talk about a "dangerous game" of brinkmanship  that will make Putin feel like he were in Afghanistan once again.

So in the next two months we will know if Putin/Soleimani form the new Guderian panzer team that gets around the Sunni Maginot line in less time than the Nato can sing "achtung"  in Turkish or Arabic !

What a blitzkrieg in the making this sabre rattling is turning out to be.

Imagine Putin doing a Mark Rubio in Baghdad or Raqa : Cooking his kebab bbq on a kalachnikov for the world to see !

These attacks on Russia by the Rothschild controlled governments are quite serious. The Russian people may be harmed, somewhat, by this EVIL perpetrated by the same Tribe that ran the government of Georgia, hell they were from ISRAEL! How did the Televitz cover that story? EVIL Russia and EVIL South Ossetia in an UNPROVOKED attack on poor little innocent Georgia. Russia took care of the job in a quite nice fashion. I admired their work it was superb.

Despite my reservations about SOME of Mr Putin's actions trying to appease the Tribe over the last few years he really is a dynamic leader and he is not AT ALL like the USSA and the rest of the Rat Pack. He, alone of all Russian leaders, settled the hash of the Chechens, and that is REMARKABLE!

Mr Putin is LOOKING OUT FOR THE INTERESTS OF RUSSIA, that is the sum of it all. Unlike the USSA pols, Demonrats and GOP both, who have sold us out to the Tribe.

Putin is the most important of the BIG leaders. He is TOUGH, BRILLIANT, and COURAGEOUS, and SHREWD. The Russian people will look back upon him with a deep love and appreciation. As will we all. He is a RUSSIAN first and foremost, but he is HELPING us ALL.

I was just reading about a Christian Syrian who fought FOR Assad and LOVES Hezbollah and their leader. The MSM would NOT tell Americans that, in the same way they smear Mr Putin.

May be harmed???  How about going back to the early days of the Bolshevik Revolution and into Stalin's era and see exactly what role JEWS played in exterminating MILLIONS of Russian citizens (who were predominately Christians by the way) - hint, they were primarily the ones responsible for that GENOCIDE.

It's hilarious how hard the JEWS (actually the Zionists) have worked over the last 100 years to bury this fact from the history books and ban it from public discourse.  It's also encouraging to see that this information is now being more widely discussed in spite of their machinations, such as slapping people with the "anti-Semite" label, and people are saying - "But wait a minute . . . . what about the things YOU PEOPLE DID".

I have been waiting a long, long, time for something like this to unfold. The truth is I never saw it coming. And I don't think the war hawks in washington did either. They have become used to an environment of zero push back. Now a real leader has emerged to challenge the US gov. agenda for the middle east. The American people are going to see first hand the law of unintended consequences. We may have the largest military in the world, but our flip flopping politicians lack the political will power to use it in an outright confrontation with Russia or China. What's going to happen is more moaning and groaning over technicalities like airspace violations, some sanctions and much hand wringing and oy veying. This administration is getting a full on public punking, and everyone sees it. There is no way to spin themselves out of this one.

Again, there are no “Syrian troops.” They were defeated a long, long time ago . . .

I don't know who (or what organization) wrote this piece but this contention is pure unadulterated bullshit and is actually exactly what TPTB in the "west" want everyone to believe.  A whole contingent of ex-intelligence people that work for Veteranstoday.com recently went to Syria and they would flatly dispute the propaganda that there are no regular Syrian forces left that are loyal to Assad.

Is the Syrian Army getting substantial help from Iran, Iraq and Russia - of course they are - just like ISIS/ISIL and the rest of the anti-Assad forces are being supported by the "west" and the Arab Aristocracies like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Jordan.  That's not the same thing as saying there is no Syrian army left fighting over there, which is just pure BS . . . . and before everyone flames me for saying this go to http://veteranstoday.com (with an open mind) and read some of the reports there regarding this issue.

I met with a good friend last week that recently returned from Afghanistan.  He was engaged in combat 365 24/7.  Every military action requires that ROE rules of engagement be spelled out in detail.  When I was in combat the ROE was "If you feel your life is in danger, shoot and shoot to kill" no questions asked, no after action report, no nothing-shoot and shoot to kill.

Current doctrine for US forces in Afghanland is COMPLICATED to the point of everything you do is second guessed.  You can't fight a war with a fucking rule book.  You only have time to react and NOT think.   Thinking gets you killed in combat.  He told several stories of missions that the Controller took several minutes to authorize or decline returning fire while they were being shot at and US ground forces were in harms way.  On one occassion the controller declined permission and they killed the target anyway.  This wasn't a case of preventing friendly fire.  This was a case of fighting PC.  Even certain types of ammo had to be used for certain types of targets.  I can't go into detail without revealing personal info.  The point is SOMEONE in government has tied our troops hands behind their backs.  I blame Obama.

The Russian will do much better in Syria with the gloves off.  It's all about making the enemy lose their will to fight.  That's how you win a war.

No offense to you or your friend, but the reason this all seems so confusing is because you are still believing the stated goals in public rather than what all these "confounding rules and errors" tells you.  After decades of seemingly NOT WANTING TO "WIN" (in the public sense of the mission), don't you think it's fair to say that what they say they want to do publicly and what the MISSION really is are two entirely different things?

My guess is...on occassion or for example, when your friend gets a "decline order" on a target that's shooting at his it is because Langely (and the MIC/Banking cartel they represent) or some other entity views that "other target" as being more vauluable to "their mission" than your friend is to them.  Hell, if a US GI gets killed, that actually can be spun to get more support to be there to make sure the poppy growing operation is protected from those evil "Taliban" or nerafious competitors in other governments or cartels.  That's just one "for instance".  But do you see what I mean?

The problem...and simply "blaming Obama" will never help you understand the real "mission" which is repleat with continuity since Bush 1 at least...is that you and your friend are still giving the Pentagon and all that they are and everyone they represent credibility and the benefit of the doubt.  What in his or your experience would cause you to do so still?  Accept the information for what it is...don't try and build in excuses for perceived policy failures that might be successes since the mission is entirely different from what you perceive.

The real problem this admin and our "system" in general is suffering right now is a legitimacy crisis.  That can be seen throughout...and them constantly questioning the "legitimacy" of everything else is a "tell"...an attempted distraction from their own crisis they are realizing now themselves but have little ability to control as the tipping point for them has long passed and to change course now would only expose their previous crimes with more brilliance.

Looks like Putin is doing what Obama was threatening to do but chickened out when Putin stared him down. Whether this is a good thing or not is debatable.

If US had not been arming ISIL, I guess it wouldn't look as bad, but when US is deliberately arming and using ISIL to topple Assad on one hand and then giving lip service about how evil ISIL is on the other (through it's mouth piece propagandist Main Stream Media) then Obama looks like a total incompetent fool. And don't get me started on Ukraine and Nato/Eastern Europe.

Russia launches missiles and airstriikes to defend Assad. Obama woulld't do the same to remove Assad. Instead he sneaks around using ISIL, which has resulted in exponentially more collateral damage than errant missiles/bombs from airstrikes.

Shit or get off the pot Obama.

I urge a little caution when it comes to Syria and Russia's bombing achievements there. Hopefully, it's mostly true and quite amazing (especially given that Obola said it might take up to 50 years to eradicate ISIS). But let's wait until we get some irrefutable evidence that ISIS really is on the ropes and Iranian boots are now going in to scoop up the leftovers and finish the job before opening the tinnies and celebrating. At the present rate of progress it shouldn't be more than a few weeks.

EXCLUSIVE-Strategika 51: Six Russian fighter jets type Multirole Sukhoi SU - 30 SM have intercepted 4 Israeli McDonnell Douglas F-15's fighter bombers attempting to infiltrate the Syrian coast. The Israeli F 15 warplanes have been flying over Syrian airspace for months and in particular the coast of Latakia, which is now the bridgehead of the Russian forces in Syria.

The Israeli jets would generally follow a fairly complex flight plan and approach Latakia from the sea

On the night of 1 October 02, 2015, six Sukhoi SU-30 Russian SM fighters took off from the Syrian Hmimim airbase in the direction of Cyprus, before changing course and intercepting the four Israeli F-15 fighters off the coast of Syria, that were flying in attack formation.

Surprised by a situation as unexpected and probably not prepared for a dogfight with one of the best Russian multipurpose fighters, Israeli pilots have quickly turned back South at high speed over the Lebanon.

The Lebanese army has officially announced at 2313 Z (local time) that four "enemy aircraft" (Israeli) had crossed the airspace of the Lebanon.

This 'incident' between the Russian and Israeli combat aircraft struck with amazement the command of the Israeli air force, which htas estimated that a possible dogfight between F-15 Israelis and the Russian Su-30 would have led to the destruction of the four aircraft Israelis.

Israel has strongly protested to Moscow of the incident but the Russians demanded explanations about the presence of Israeli military aircraft in full Syrian airspace.

This incident indicates that the protection of Syrian airspace is now under the protection of the Russian air weapon. What causes gnashing of teeth in Washington.

The incident has been ignored by major news agencies but relays political and media of Israel in the United States, Europe and in the Arab world will redouble their efforts to demonize the Russian support for the Syrian Government.
