NATO Threatens To Send In Troops After Russia Stations Ground "Battalion" In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

As the propaganda “war” between East and West intensifies ahead of what might ultimately transform into an actual war in the skies above Syria, the world is transfixed with the scope of Russia’s week-old military campaign in support of the Assad regime.

Thanks to the fact that the West selected Islamic militants as its anti-Assad weapon of choice, Putin gets to pitch the entire effort as a “war on terror” which means The Kremlin effectively has a license to brag and sure enough, slickly-produced ISIS videos of beheadings have now been definitively replaced by slickly-produced videos of Russian warships launching cruise missiles at terrorist targets.

In short, Moscow is on a roll both militarily (of course that’s not difficult when you’re a superpower playing against a couple of JV militias) and perceptually, which makes it possible to continually ratchet up the pressure on anti-regime forces as the global applause only seems to grow with each incremental escalation much to chagrin of both the Pentagon and Washington’s Mid-East allies and as we said earlier this week, "a very likely course of events is that despite Russia's denials, the Pentagon will use the gambit of a Russian ground campaign, credible or not, to get permission from Congress to send a 'small', at first, then bigger ground force of US troops in Syria to, you guessed it, 'fight ISIS', but really to do everything to prevent Russian troops from taking over key strategic positions."

On Thursday we get the latest set of headlines from Syria, starting with NATO asserting that Russia has a ground battalion at the ready supported by tanks. Here’s Reuters:

Russia's military build-up in Syria includes a "considerable and growing" naval presence, long-range rockets and a battalion of ground troops backed by Moscow's most modern tanks, the U.S. ambassador to NATO said on Wednesday.

Speaking on the eve of a NATO defense ministers meeting to be dominated by Russia's intervention in Syria's civil war, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute said Moscow had managed a "quite impressive" military deployment over the past week to its Syria naval base in Tartous and its army base in Latakia.

"There is a considerable and growing Russia naval presence in the eastern Mediterranean, more than 10 ships now, which is a bit out of the ordinary," he told a news briefing.

"The recent Russian reinforcements over the last week or so feature a battalion-size ground force ... There is artillery, there are long-range rocket capabilities, there are air defense capabilities," Lute said.

A battalion is typically around 1,000 soldiers.

Western officials say that in strategic terms, Russia's new air strike campaign in Syria appears designed to help reverse rebel gains increasingly endangering Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, protect Russian military assets in the country including its sole Mediterranean port, and reassert Moscow’s place as a big international power competing with the United States.

"The force that they have deployed down there is actually quite impressive for a rapid deployment of a week or so," Lute said. "(It is) all arms, combined arms, attack aircraft, it is the attack helicopters and artillery, rocket artillery."

And that means NATO needs to indicate that it too is willing to deploy troops via Turkey, where Ankara will simply acquiesce to anything the West wants to do as long as Washington turns a blind eye to Erdogan’s “war” with the PKK which is far more important domestically than any conflict with ISIS or Russia because Erdogan is effectively fighting to secure the “right” to change the country’s constitution and thereby consolidate his power. Here’s Reuters again:

NATO said it was prepared to send troops to Turkey to defend its ally after violations of Turkish airspace by Russian jets bombing Syria and Britain scolded Moscow for escalating a civil war that has already killed 250,000 people.

Officials at the U.S.-led alliance are still smarting from Russia's weekend incursions into Turkey's airspace near northern Syria and NATO defense ministers are meeting in Brussels with the agenda likely to be dominated by the Syria crisis.

"NATO is ready and able to defend all allies, including Turkey against any threats," NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters as he arrived for the meeting.

"NATO has already responded by increasing our capacity, our ability, our preparedness to deploy forces including to the south, including in Turkey," he said, noting that Russia's air and cruise missile strikes were "reasons for concern".

As Russian and U.S. planes fly combat missions over the same country for the first time since World War Two, NATO is eager to avoid any international escalation of the Syrian conflict that has unexpectedly turned the alliance's attention away from Ukraine following Russia's annexation of Crimea last year.

The incursions of two Russian fighters in Turkish airspace on Saturday and Sunday has brought the Syria conflict right up to NATO's borders, testing the alliance's ability to deter a newly assertive Russia without seeking direct confrontation.

This, of course, is nothing more than an attempt to create an excuse to counter the Russians. The Russian warplanes that allegedly crossed into Turkey’s airspace obviously were not intending to bomb Ankara, so the only reason the West continues to focus on the story is to build a narrative that justifies sending ground troops in via Turkey.

Meanwhile, the Iran-sponsored ground cleanup crew is apparently on the move and advancing quickly:

Syrian troops and allied militia backed by Russian air strikes and cruise missiles fired from warships attacked rebels forces on Thursday as the government extended a major offensive to recapture territory in the west of the country.

Rebel advances in western Syria earlier this year had threatened the coastal region vital to President Bashar al-Assad's control of the area and prompted Russia's intervention on his side last week.

In a further show of force, the Russian defense ministry said missiles fired from its ships in the Caspian Sea hit weapons factories, arms dumps, command centers and training camps supporting Islamic State forces.

Ground forces loyal to the government targeted insurgents in the Ghab Plain area of western Syria, with heavy barrages of surface-to-surface missiles as Russian warplanes bombed from above, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and a rebel fighting there.

It said rebels had shot down a helicopter in Hama province in western Syria. It was unclear if it was Syrian or Russian.

Syria said a major military operation was under way.

Yes, "ground forces loyal to the government" or, stripping away the facade, "Shiite ground forces loyal to Tehran" who, once the campaign in Syria is over, will cross right back into Iraq and continue the fight against Sunni extremists only now they'll be backed not only by the IRGC, but by the Russian army, and on that note, we close with the following from AFP:

Russian President Vladimir Putin's bullish entry into the Syrian conflict has worked wonders for his popularity in neighbouring Iraq, where some await "Hajji Putin" like a saviour.

Sitting at his easel in his central Baghdad workshop, painter Mohammed Karim Nihaya touches up a portrait of Putin he copied from the Internet.

"I have been waiting for Russia to get involved in the fight against Daesh," he says, referring to the Islamic State group that last year declared a "caliphate" straddling Iraq and Syria.

"They get results. The United States and its allies on the other hand have been bombing for a year and achieved nothing," the bespectacled artist says.

I think China are like Russia, they do not say what they are going to do, but when they do, it's going to be a sight to see. You see, if they manage to drag Russia into a wider war, then China know their number will soon be up, so they have no choice, they must help if needed.

Fuck the Western terrorist axis of evil.

This declaration sounds really stupid if one still remembers the NATO and US supposedly fight ISIS in the Middle East. So theoretically even with their rhetorics they should not “threaten” to send in troops, but “support” Russian efforts in this fight with terrorist organization. But the real agenda of course is revealed here: http://www.politico.com/story/2015/10/zbigniew-brzezinski-financial-times-op-ed-obama-retaliate-russia-214438

ISIS is a US asset, and US should retaliate Russia. I am just curious if American and Western European public is ever going to come out of coma and see events for what they are?

I do not remember this much escalation and provocation in the Cold War that started after WWII. Saber rattling, yes, but not so much violence. Now, we have the internet and we can see people with legs blown off, dying, in Ukraine and the violence seems to be much worse. The sufffering is horrendous. We did not have an America going, all out, to fund the Military Industrial Complex, bankers funding wars and a depopulation faction. This, all, seems much worse, now, than it was in the 20th century. I fear, if Americans continue to do nothing while their politicians' owners destroy the world, we will all suffer, terribly.

I agree, but what should Americans do that won't be used to counterproductive effect as propaganda against those wishing to rid us of the oligarchical psychopaths?

Blow up broadcast towers?

Assassinate bankers, politicians, and their sycophant media mouthpieces?

Conclusively disrupt propaganda organs like movie theater or various fascistic cultural events?

...?

Any significant threat will be used to tighten control over a populace already willing to submit to tyranny for convenience and a sense of safety.  How could such a thing be effective?

I don't plan to go to prison or to prematurely meet God just to feed the system more propaganda ammo to tighten its grip.

Syria: major coalition of armed groups join against Russia occupation

Forty of the largest armed opposition groups in Syria from regional countries have called for the formation of a coalition against the Russia-Iran coalition, Al Jazeera TV reported on Monday. These groups said in their statement the Assad regime has brought Russia and Iran for cruelty and animosity, and to occupy Syria.

The statement released by these 40 groups states Russia committed its first war crime in its airstrikes against Homs, during which more than 50 civilians were killed. This statement adds Russia warplanes are bombing specific civilian areas that are nowhere near regions controlled by ISIS.

Give me a better source than Reuters .. (or the Guardian)

According to Lute? Lute's a liar. I trust no one in the Soetoro admin ..

Any regular ground troops, first in, will be Marines. In Russia, that is the Naval Infantry. And they usually enter via the sea onto the beach. They could come via helo as well. Show me an Anatov landing embarking troops. If not these, then GRU/Spetsnaz. Show me picks of cadmium blue berets, striped t-shirts, on the ground in Syria.

So far the only ground troops in Syria, are Syrian. They are sufficient for the task. They know and train Russian tactics. They integrate well with Russian air cover. Iranian troops will come into Syria in force before any Russian. Iran also trains with Russia the same with Syrian ..

Reuters is a Mossad tool. Plain and simple. Give me a better source. ZH, you are just playing into Western propaganda (Bush-CIA-DoD/Mossad/MI6/Saudi/Turkey et al)

Kiev is insolvent. As you point out. All the IMF loans it gets are going to paying government salaries, and military costs. Nothing, I repeat nothing, is left to service debt. In ordinary cases Ukraine would be treated as a defaulter by the IMF. But the USA controls the IMF, and thus IMF money still pours into Kiev. In fact, if not for free IMF money, Kiev would collapse. No payment of pensions, no payment of military, on payment of government workers. In short, total collapse. Ukrainians are seeking to get into Poland and the Baltics, Hungary and Slovakia. But having little luck. 2.5 million Ukrainians have sought shelter in Russia since the Euro Maidan coup. 1.5 from war torn Donbass. And 1 million from occupied Ukraine. Russia welcome these people as their culture, ethnicity, race and education are the exact same as most Russians. In other words, a very welcome addition to Russia. Unlike Europe, who are getting over 1.5 million Muslims just in 2015!

What prompted Putin to make his master stroke so quickly and to use Russians best electronic warfare systems to hide the move into Syrian air bases? Well, it was in a story from a few weeks before, when Turkey signed a deal with the USA "Turkey and the United States have signed a deal to open the former's Incirlik air base to the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group, .."

Such a deal allowing US airforces to base just minutes from Syria, opened the door for a Libyan style take down of Assad. Syria could not survive with the US Air Forces operating a 15 minute flight from Syria. SO, Putin acted fast to PREVENT a Libyan type Assad take down.

Either Russia acted, or the USA could and would turn that Air Power against Assad, while claiming to be fighting ISIS. Instead, ISIS would have US air cover for the final push. Putin saw Libya, and vowed that it would not happen again.

So, I maintain that the US move into INCIRLIK was the straw that broke the camel's back.

You maybe right, but to bring down Assad in Damascus would mean the slaughter of thousands more Syrians while NATO bemoans the 4 year death toll there.

And Erdogan.  Is there a leader of a large country who is playing both ends against the middle like he does?

His dispute with Russia is over its support for Syria, but no doubt he understands Russia's need for that support.

His latest dispute with the US stems from the CIA's attempt at regime change in Ankara when it released audio tapes of Erdogan, his son, and other high official talking about bribery and corruption and cost Erdogan's party its Parliamentary majority in June 2014.

In Turkey, Erdogan sailed on, riding out mass protests over his high-handed style of governing, and a corruption scandal that produced a tape of him instructing his son to move tens of millions of Euros out of a home safe.

Insofar as Incirlik is concerned, I would be very surprised if Turkey did not maintain absolute control of where NATO planes taking off from that base could bomb.

To me is more likely that the Russian attacks on IS a week ago, were devised to out-Herod the Islamic State's Herod.

Which is undoubtedly a good thing.

And will overwhelm the Dutch bullshit about MH17 to be released October 13

http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/10/08/us-russia-putin-insight-idUSKC...

This article is assigning to Putin the very same problems that are our own weaknesses!!!  Our stupidity has really no limit???

The Western governments are prisoners of their dumb ass short sighted oligarchs.
Most of Western governments are just puppets in the hands of few guys.
If we do not acknowledge and fix this problem… we do not stand a chance… really.

Putin on the other hand, is really a ruthless guy (a smart one, much smarter than his counterparts evidently…). He controls his oligarchs. They serve HIM, not the other way around… and he throws them a bone from time to time to make them happy… or replaces them when they get out of line.
I would say if Macchiavelli was alive today… he would crown Putin the most excellent candidate for his “Prince”. However I doubt that our Politicians even read Macchiavelli…

Funny enough... Putin is not nearly as dangerous as we are to ourselves...
Putin is not winning over the Middle East… we lost the Middle East to Putin… BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

What a fucking waste of time scrolling down and reading the well informed opinions of the multiple brilliant commenters on ZH.  And I mean a complete waste of time as you have been Hi-Jacked ZH.

Do something about it Tyler mate, or you are going to lose all your readership.

Utter bollocks is all that is on this thread.

Putin is in this for the long haul. The presence of a Chinese war ship is significant. If the West decides to play hardball,

the Russians are ready militarily. At the same time, the Chinese will throw in a financial curveball (note my use of US sporting terms) and could well announce a new gold standard with gold priced at its real value -some 10 times higher than in the West. The effect of this move would cripple Western banks, who do not have the physical to provide to investors eager to cash in their paper. End of US as we know it.

Banksters and government are in a printing corner. Oly way out is a massive war with Russia and China. To divert attention to something worse.

Putin about to invade Turkey

says NATO.

Must prevent it by sending NATO reinforcements to Turkey.

...

Absurdity piled upon absurdity.

Most likely instead is that NATO wants to send reinforcements

to help Erdogan hold onto power against an actual moderate opposition.

Agree, but I thought of another reason as well; NATO is sabre-rattling but hesitates to actually invade Syra because some member states would scream bloody murder.  So they dance near the border with Syria and hold exercises with Turkish troops (those that haven't already jumped across the border for "personal reasons") and make it look like they are "protecting" Turkey from the "evil Russians".

It looks like the US ambassador to NATO is indulging in a little weasel language.  That "battalion-size ground force" is not all fighters.  The videos the Russians made about themselves showed cooks, laundry workers, etc.  The Russians are not counting on using any local staff to wash dishes or wait tables or drive cars for their officers and soldiers.  They flew in a small town, as we do.  What percent of any army is support?

I heard 90% are support workers.

True, but like in the old days (of the US military) every one of those menioned people are infantry qualified (the US has developed a problem in that area).

NATO better put on their thinking hats and tally all the weapons lost in Iraq.. as they could potentially turn up as the PKK-uprising wares.  I say that they are to late and Charlie is already in place.  Both the Chinese and the Russians have agents in place and Turkey is already half baked.

Lots of "trolling" on ZH on these Russian & China stories.  We need more Doctors Without Border; where is RT going to get on the ground and do some serious journalism?
