US Claims Malfunctioning Russian Cruise Missiles Hit Iran; Moscow, Tehran Both Deny

Tyler Durden's picture

The past seven days have brought a wave of competing propaganda from both Washington and Moscow as both East and West scramble to shape the narrative on Syria where Russia’s “intervention” has apparently turned the tide in favor of Damascus, completely destroying the anti-Assad strategy of the Pentagon’s regional allies.

It’s absolutely imperative for everyone to do their best to maintain the public’s trust here. This is how we put it on Wednesday:

The West cannot afford to stand by and watch Russia do in a matter of weeks what the US has failed to accomplish in 13 months. Put simply: if Moscow declares victory over ISIS within the next month or two (and that appears as likely as not), Washington will be left to explain to a bewildered public what just happened. To the uninitiated, it will appear as though Russia’s military is far superior to the US Army when it comes to fighting terror and on top of that, Iran’s now well publicized role will not only cast further doubt on the nuclear deal, but will also raise questions about the contention that Tehran is committed to financing and exporting terror.

For Russia, the powerplay in Syria represents nothing short of a return to the world stage after decades of flying below the radar as a second rate superpower. Putin has now proven that Moscow can project its influence with virtual impunity and as Monday’s “accidental” violation of Turkish airspace suggests, The Kremlin is getting more brave by the day in the face of what certainly looks like a de facto surrender by the West.

Well, it now looks as though, lacking anything in the way of options, the US is set to try and sow discord between Russia and Iran by highlighting the following “story”:

  • MISSILES MEANT FOR SYRIA LANDED IN RURAL IRAN: DEFENSE OFFICIAL
  • FOUR RUSSIAN CRUISE MISSILES LANDED IN IRAN, U.S. OFFICIAL SAYS
  • U.S BELIEVES FOUR RUSSIAN CRUISE MISSILES FIRED AT SYRIA FROM RUSSIAN SHIP CRASHED IN IRAN -U.S. OFFICIALS
  • MISSILES MEANT FOR SYRIA LANDED IN RURAL IRAN: DEFENSE OFFICIAL

And here’s CNN:

A number of cruise missiles launched from a Russian ship and aimed at targets in Syria have crashed in Iran, two U.S. officials told CNN Thursday.

Monitoring by U.S. military and intelligence assets has concluded that at least four missiles crashed as they flew over Iran. One official said there may be casualties, but another official said this is not yet known.

It's unclear where in Iran the missiles landed. The Russian ships have been positioned in the south Caspian Sea, meaning the likely flight path for missiles into Syria would cross over both Iran and Iraq.

The Russians have been firing a relatively new cruise missile called "Kaliber," using it for the first time in combat.

Note that we are not denying the possibility that some Russian cruise missles might have accidentally landed in Iran. That very well could be the case. But if it is, here's why: Moscow just fired up a military juggernaut that's been parked in the garage for nearly three decades and so yeah, it's entirely possibly that there will be a few hiccups and tragically, those hiccups will probably result in the loss of innocent lives. There's no sugar coating that.

But if this is an effort on the part of the Pentagon to create tension between Moscow and Tehran it won't work.

Understand that this would be like attempting to sow conflict between the US and Canada by drawing attention to US missles that accidentally hit Alberta on the way to targets in Alaska where militants were attempting to invade North America. In other words: Tehran isn't going to care about this and the sooner Washington, Doha, and Riyadh decide to get serious about developing a real strategy here, the better off they'll look in the history books because suggesting that Russian jets are about to bomb Ankara and/or that Russia shouldn't fire cruise missiles at militants because one or two might malfunction on the flight over Iran hardly counts as a credible "plan" and indeed, this isn't exactly the best time for the US to be pointing fingers when it comes to collateral damage.

Oh, and by the way, both Russia and Iran say these reports are entirely bogus. Via Sputnik:

Iranian defense ministry believes reports on "fallen Russian cruise missiles" are part of the intensified western propaganda war, according to a source.

Tehran denies US reports that four of Russia's cruise missiles targeting ISIL actually fell to the ground in Iran, with the country's defense ministry calling the accusations "psychological war."

Russia's Defense Ministry denies US media reports of an alleged incident involving cruise missiles which were fired at ISIL positions in Syria on October 7, stating that all missiles hit their designated targets.

"No matter how unpleasant and unexpected for our colleagues in the Pentagon and Langley was yesterday's high-precision strike on Islamic State infrastructure in Syria, the fact remains that all missiles launched from our ships have found their targets," ministry's spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

That's how they murdered General Patton. With the smoke of a 'car accident' they then make sure you get 'special' medical care. Tragically, the patient always dies.

The evil creatures who do this only get away with it time and again because the general populace is a vapid self-worshiping gaggle of people who on some level choose to believe or go with the lie du jour.

Of course today I'd wager that about 40% are solidly brain dead- possibly more.

^^^

full disclosure, im an american. that being said, i completely agree with this statement. makes zero sense for russia to want to hit iran. iran knows it. hell, russia is clearing the road so iran can get their troops in there & clean the place out. again, as an american, i give putin credit for what he's doing. at least someones got the fucking balls to do something with all these rats running around chopping peoples heads off & trying to overthrow leaders of sovereign countries.

furthermore obama & earnest look like absolute tools. we have an extremely capable & lethal military & obama has IT parked in the garage while he talks about what he'd LIKE to have happen ALL THE WHILE putin is putin his $$$, troops, and lets not forget RISKING HIS CITIZENS lives (HIS country is ALOT closer to the middle east than ours). he's whacking anything that moves carrying a weapon in syria & has said he'll hit iraq if asked.

imagine an american president with the stomach to admit they're wrong (since we have NO strategy and haven't) and actually sit down with putin, have our pentagon & their defense ministers sit down, and actually WORK TOGETHER ON THIS. it would be over in about 20 minutes between our 2 militaries.

Russia is on a roll - the US and the MIC is deparate to do something to try to cut down the perception that the Russian mililtary is now World-superpower class, and reignite the meme that American military equipment is "better" even if its three (four? five?) times as expensive...

After all, it wouldn't do at all if the US client states start buying Russian gear.

If you do the math though, assuming of 30 cruise missiles fired, 4 failed, that is still 26 cruise missiles that hit their target for the price of 10 American cruise missiles (some of which could just as easily have failed) - and this with a new class weapon.

The key to take away from the cruise missiles fired from the Caspian Sea isn't that some failed, its that they were fired from so far away and got the job done.

I wonder what was the failure rate of the first tomahawks were during GWI ?? Success rate  certainly wasn't 100%.

Sending in cavalry (akin to Air power) for shock effect without being supported by infantry is a formula that has led to many military failures.   Was this deliberate on the US part?  A strategic decision beyond the military?   If the regional intelligence agencies created and backed Daesh/ISIS, then air power only provided containment.

It appears Russia is combining a true combined arms push to eradicate the 'rebels'.  Now the US risks 'losing' Syria, Iraq and Iran with Russia and Iran exerting influence and potentially enveloping the Saudis.  The dictatorship in KSA could be shaky too.  Who in the west wants to fight a war to protect dictators again?

Amazing how the US can track a cruise missile so accurately at near ground level, right to where it went, while they totally fail at tracking or having any information about missing or shot down airliners full of cilvilians.  This was posted here, but worth repeating.  I just don't get it.  You'd think civilian lives don't matter.  Oh, wait...

They can.

It is exactly like you tracking a baseball thrown to you by one of your friends.  When playing catch you can easily make all the star catches.

But when instead you tend the barbeque and the ball strikes you unexpectedly, you turn to see your friends giggling, each pointing at the other saying 'he did it'.

Radar can let you ballistically track objects with amazing clarity.  But the greater the clarity, necessarily the narrower the field of view.   It is basic doppler physics.

I was following you until you said "doppler physics" and lost all credibility.

Doppler physics let you determine which direction something is traveling based on the expansion or compression of wavelengths.

Whether you are paying attention or not and the density of tracking assets makes a difference though... as you stated.

Here is the worst part for the US government.

If ISIS is defeated in Syria and Iraq and it was Russia that did it, then the US government is going to have a hard time following through on their current narrative of how ISIS got stronger, came to the US and is committing terrorist acts on US soil... because we are attacking them in Syris.

Clearly, ISIS would look toward retribution in Russia, not the US.

But it is all moot since ISIS is a US government/Israel/Saudi/Turk funded, trained and armed mercenary army whose main assets are black hoods, running shoes and a sound stage. (ya can't make this shit up). Yes there are other mercenary armies in Syria attacking Assad and the Syrian people and these mercenaries have actual guns. Russians has been attacking and the US government has been defending these groups.

Looks to me the Ruskis have obliterated the technology gap between them and the US. Just have a look at their latest Sukhoi jetfighter specs ( or a Chinese J-15, they come from the same drawing table )  and compare them with a F35 joint strike fighter ..... the latter cannot even use its board guns, has a low action radius, is not manoevrable and has a low top speed. But it is supposed to be "stealth" while any heat seeking missile takes out a "stealthy" fighter without problems and modern radars can detect "stealthy" airplanes far better now.

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 16:30 | 6646122 css1971

None of that military stuff matters about the F22 or F35. What matters is they are so expensive individually that you could never afford to risk them in combat. It doesn't actually matter if they really work or not. At 1/4 to 1/3 of a billion each, the US will continue to fly the previous generation of aircraft instead and keep the F22 & F35 "in reserve". They'll never see action.

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 16:37 | 6646180 Savyindallas

Yeah if we actually put them in action and saw how fucked up they are--defense contractors like LockHeed martin would jeopardize future obscene profits. It may also encourage the Russians to go on an all out offensive in several countries. We are so fucked. The eleites are counting on the belief that their F22 and F35s can defeat the American people  -once the Rebellion begins. I'm not so sure.

The F-22s are most likely the Tiger IIs of today.  When operational, probably totally bad-ass, but they also require maintainance.  In the end, they (Tiger IIs) were broken down by failing supply chains, design flaws and completely overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of Shermans, T34s, and when US commanders knew what they were doing, sending the lighter, but faster tank destroyers.  But when running, they could really fuck some shit up.  In a real war against a real opponent, it would be foolish to throw the F-22s at everything.  It would be better to start mass producing much more simple aircraft to overwhelm the other side with numbers while using the F-22 for special jobs.  Even the Apache, which I would not want to see coming at me in any way, shape or form, requires a logistical clusterfuck to keep it running.

Re:  Tiger II.  When an army is in retreat damaged tanks that can't be repaired are either destroyed or left behind.  Many a Tiger had to be left behind even when minor repairs could have saved them.  When the Tiger was used correctly it could knock out any tank opposed to it as long as it kept its distance and didn't close.

Thu, 10/08/2015 - 23:19 | 6647588 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

Sure, but maintenance on them was a real bitch.  They were complex and at least with the Tiger II, some of the parts weren't robust enough for them to be reliable.  A super tank does no good if it isn't running.  And the M-26 Pershing may have been a match for it, toe to toe, but I'm not sure if there were ever any Tiger II/M-26 fights.  Curiously, the M-26 had some of the same reliability issues.

If we get into a real protracted war with an enemy that can hit back (and that doesn't go nuclear,) how long do you think we're going to keep those supply chains going to keep up with the maintenance on some of our high tech toys?  My point here is that our greatest strengths may also be our Achilles heel.

. . . . modern radars can detect "stealthy" airplanes far better now.

The USA has made terrible decisions by dumping so much money into "stealth" aircraft technology at the expense of designing planes that are fast and maneuverable, and relatively inexpensive - almost exactly the opposite approach that the Russian's have taken.  The new satellite and radar technology developed by both the Russians and the Chinese that can easily identify the location and flight path of ANY aircraft via its "wake" through the atmosphere has made the whole concept of "stealth" planes virtually obsolete.
