Russia Sends Its Only Aircraft Carrier To Syria, Signals It Is Just Getting Started
As should be abundantly clear by now, The Kremlinis adopting a “slightly” different strategy when it comes to combatting terror in the Mid-East than that adopted by the US and its Western and regional allies.
The strategy of the US and its allies seems to go something like this: 1) covertly arm and train groups who you know might ultimately become terrorists because arming and training these groups may be a way to destabilize unfriendly regimes, 2) wait for blowback, 3) launch serious effort to combat terror if unfriendly regime has been “successfully” replaced by puppet government, or launch half-hearted effort to combat terror if situation still fluid and regime still clings to power.
Obviously, that strategy is prone to all types of problems, and sensing that the US and its allies might have finally met their foreign policy blunder Waterloo in Syria, Russia decided to call everyone’s bluff by launching a real war on terror. Of course, this war conveniently restores the regime of one of Moscow’s allies, but in the end the result is the same: anyone who is a terrorist and who is also fighting Assad in Syria is in for big trouble because Russia is using this is as an opportunity to reassert itself on the world stage and also to fire up a long-dormant military juggernaut.
Now, on the heels of hundreds of airstrikes accompanied by dramatic video footage as well as cruise missile attacks launched from Russian warships in the Caspian, The Kremlin is sending its lone heavy aircraft carrier into the fight. This is only the ship's sixth deployment in history.
Here’s more from Flashnord (Google translated):
Heavy aircraft carrier (heavy aircraft), "Admiral Kuznetsov" is Russia's only aircraft carrier, the weekend will go from Murmansk to the shores of Syria, said FlashNord source in the Northern Fleet command.
"The cruiser dock repair completed until the end of the week go to the coast of Syria, where he joined the operation to destroy the group" Islamic State "," - a spokesman said.
According to him, from May to August this year was held aircraft carrier dock repair 82 Shipyard in Roslyakovo (Murmansk region). Then, on a regular docked in Murmansk, he walked up to the restoration of full combat readiness.
Since September 30, Russia carries out air operations in Syria with the aim of destroying the objects of the "Islamic state."
Here are some images:

Here's a bit of color via Reuters from earlier this year. Notably, the Kuznetsov isn't known for being in particularly great working order which probably makes the chances of some kind of accident that much greater:
When the Soviet Union launched Kuznetsov in 1985, it was a major technical accomplishment for the then-superpower. Moscow began assembling Varyag, a sister ship of Kuznetsov, around the same time. It also started work on a true full-size carrier, as big as anything the United States builds.
But the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991 abruptly halted the carrier program.
Russia was left with Kuznetsov as its sole flattop and, deprived of funds and Ukraine’s assistance, has struggled to keep the vessel in working condition. Since the ship was commissioned into frontline service in the early 1990s, Kuznetsov has deployed just five times. Each deployment, lasting between three and six months, saw the flattop sail from its home port in northern Russia around Europe and into the Mediterranean as a show of force and to demonstrate support for Russia’s allies in the region, including Syria.

Nonsense. Obama has been COMPLETELY effective in his mission. Leveling and depopulating Syria in order to make way for greater israel. Please get it right. LOL.
"Obama has apparently launched 25,000 airstrikes against ISIS"
It helps when you try and hit a real target. Obama doesn't want to hurt his Muslim brotherhood buddies.
It's getting crowded in the Kiel Hamburg canal as

"as big as anything the United States builds"
Can the U.S. actually build carriers anymore? Don't they have to contract out to S. Korea...or China?
its all debt based , US owns nothing of their military, it belongs to the creditors
Buy the news
lets hope they accidentally bomb isreal........

Putin considers US actions in Syria targeting transformer and power plant strangeMOSCOW, October 13. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed bewilderment on Tuesday over the targets of US airstrikes in Syria.
Only Aircraft Carrier
lol, pathetic Russians... Don’t let as wait too long, send grounds troops to Syria. Can’t wait
Looks like they are doing just fine without one being they aren't that far away. Syria is a Russian ally, with a Russian base. I'm sure if Russia decided to blow up a US ally, such as Israel, this would all be spun quite differently.
Yes, they are using rest of Assads army, Iranians and Hezbollah, as well as different Shia paramilitaries as ground force and cover them from air. So far – much noise, no big results, but let’s see what happens next. Also at some point Saudis, US etc. will recover from first shock and then the things will turn even uglier

Aw, fuck. Under the guise of bringing freedom to people in the Middle East who have never known freedom- after all, Islam demands obedience to the big angry guy in the sky, the war profiteers continuously target their next bad guy; most recently the hot potato was handed to Assad.
Putin, right or wrong, has an interest in Assad surviving. And he is not pussy-footing around the issue. Will he succeed ? We shall see.
Remember those head cutting videos?
Sounds like you're a cheerleader for those evil guys doing the cutting.
The videos? You mean the ones made by "Socialst Jew Media Hollywood Productions"
It's hard to imagine peple dumb enough to think those are real......Obama voter, are ya?
Did I say the videos were real. Or did you just assume that?
You also assume I'm american...
Good luck to the Saudis trying to fight on two fronts - Yemen and Syria. If they can't subdue the Houthis after months of bombing how are they going to stop the Russians and iranians?
Sorry, I can't help but put more of my ignorance on display for the world to see:
Does it run on rocket engines and do the electronics use valves?
Answers, both stupid and intelligent, welcome (by me. Other people may have more important things to do with their time).
pathetic israelis...tough as nails with the outgunned Palestinians, but once the Russians come to town you see how fast the Dear Leader Netanyahu shuts his mouth to cover up the fact he's shitting his pants. Like Russia even gives a fuck about the ex-Soviet jews who left Russia after '91 and took all the ill-gotten wealth they accrued over the years with them.
If Russia runs out of money, which I doubt, it's not expensive to push the big red button.
The middle east is what H-Bombs are for.....Detonate an appropriate number, and just start over there. Enough is enough.
drop those hboms on telaviv............problem solved.......
Apparently the Pentagon was unaware that Russian SSN-30A Kalibr cruise missiles could accurately hit targets 1500 km away. As pointed out by Pepe Escobar, Russia has created a de facto no fly zone over Syria and southern Turkey, and to further back this up, the Russian Navy cruiser Moskva, carrying 64 S-300 ship-to-air missiles is now docked in Latakia. It has been reported on Oct. 3 and 4, Russia violated Turkish airspace by Su-30SM and Su-24 aircraft, with the Russian Su-30SM maintaining a radar lock on the F-16s for 5 minutes. The Russian message to Turkey/NATO is pretty clear. For an update, see- Say hello to my cruise missiles by Pepe Escobar; Link: atimes.com/2015/10/say-hello-to-my-cruise-missiles-escobar
If "Russia has created a de facto no fly zone over Syria and southern Turkey" then how did a certain someone para-drop over 50 tons of ammo and other supplies to "moderate rebels", wink-wink, in Syria in the past few days?
Good question. Where were the drops? I doubt Russia claims a no-fly zone over southern Turkey. Link?
EDIT: I see Pepe's article claims this. Well so much for "de-facto". Russians must have there hands full flying 88 bombing missions in the last 24 hrs.
The drop was at Al-Hasakah which is way out east, completely outside of Russian zone of operations.
Al Hasakah province to be precise, which is basically all of eastern Syria, right where the ISIS head-chopping liver-eaters hang out.
It is not outside range of Su 24s from Latakia and cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea. Russian way - first identify target then fire, American way - fire then claim whatever was hit was the target.
Russian imposed no fly zone is a Pootin lovers wet dream.
Chaps?

Certainly agree with
" World War 3.0 – and nobody, apart from the usual Dr. Strangeloves, could possibly want that — missiles and submarines will be the key weapons, not US-style monster aircraft carriers."
from that Pepe Escobar article. Thanks for the link

"This is getting real now. Obama has apparently launched 25,000 airstrikes against ISIS with no effect. Putin has proven to be far more effective in less than a few hundred"
The reason is not that we cant win, it is Obummer that doesnt want to win because it helps his war buddies make money on weapons etc. War is a racket and you guys know that...He was trying to keep this Syria conflict alive enough to eventually go to full fledge war. This country is broke, and when we are really broke, we go to war to hide how broke we are. Its either that or he is sympathethic to the enemy that was created by the CIA. The war rulebook has been completely been thrown out of the window.
And Putins interference screwed it all up for Obummer.
We're not broke.
We can print as much fiat as it takes.
We only become broke when the other idiots refuse to take our green colored toilet paper.
"We only become broke when the other idiots refuse to take our green colored toilet paper."
When other countries find that to their advantage they'll do it. That will be indeed the time free markets take over.
The Federal Reserve would be rendered powerless by the rest of the world.
Yep, Putins working on it. I just hope when its over we don't replace our toilet paper with theirs, we need a specie money based economy.
I was a US Marine and remmeber calling cadence to Smedly Butler and his exploits. It wasn't until I got out that I learned of his true geniuos after reading his book. Corporate/Bankseter interests seem hell bent on a hot war. They need a distractioon from the financial chaos or maybe just an addtion to it..
It'll be the end of October soon ...
Same here.
Do you really think Obama would be acting like this in Syria if it was his choice, please. This is the power of Israel over US foreign policy pure and simple (with a little help from Saudis, turkey and the MIC...)
ooooooooow, scary.
The Israelis will sink it and blame it on the Americans.
Russia doesn't have a "Chosenite" problem and hopefully will rain all manner of righteous Hell down on israel, should they even have the ball to attempt such a thing.
The number of carriers in one's Arsenal must be directly proportional to the amount of sovereign nations one plans to promote freedum in...
Maybe that boat would look more shock & aweie if the crew took there shirts off.
Ho Mo Fantasy - please keep to yourself.
If you can't come up with something a little more original than that you should just not post. It has to be better than the post you are flaming otherwise... weeeak.
My post was a snark, not a flame. You, I'm not so sure about.
Look close. Can you read it? Made in the USA? See it??
Barbarous relic!
The deployment is surely more symbolic than practical. A further public demonstration of its re-emergence as a superpower.
Russia knows that flattops are vulnerable to being sunk like sitting ducks, after all it has the means to do so.
Yes, Aircraft carriers are so WW2. Great of course for flattening the natives, but not if the opposition has advanced missile technology.
The USA used up countless rockets and missiles and rounds of all kinds in their endless pretend sorties against ISIS.
Northrup and Boeing were more than happy to replace this ordnance.
Future do-nothing board seats and $50,000 speaking fees to the admirals. generals, and congresswhores who had anything to do with it.
Simple as pie.
Britain will get an aircraft carrier soon..........and in another 20 years it will get aircraft from the US if they can get the F-35 to fly
and one day the US will be able to transport to the International Space Station (ISS) without Russian aid
what baloney "The Martian", so much fictional competence and kilotons of equipment that just gets there out of thin air
A/C carriers are last wars equipment just like the WWI Battleships were in WWII. Plus they're mostly for offensive rather than defensive use which is why Russia doesn't have them. The ussa empire wannabees use them to slap smaller non conforming country's into obedience. Aircraft carriers are pretty much useless with today's missile technology and can be taken out by hyper-sonic missiles launched a thousand miles away or silent subs operating in the area.
After the redcoats blathering about firing on Russia's aircraft last week Russia has decided to give their attack aircraft fighter escorts. This Aircraft Cruiser may have that mission.
As for ussa/nato placing a no-fly zone,,, doubtful,,, ussa/nato are used to bully defenseless nations. Russian pilots won't back down easily. Besides, it's too late.
In response, President Obama called Putin a "Hating Hater" and launched a particularly catty hashtag campaign #RussianPoopyHead. His hand-picked Joint Chiefs chairman said "It's a good thing you did that Barack, it's a real good thing" and mumbled something about wishing him into the cornfield.
Whatever NATO will do will be just stupid. Arogance and Stupidity always go together; not to forget about their sibling named Greed.
The silence of Washington DC in refusing to meet with the Russians to end terrorism is deafening.
All Americans should be disgusted by DC placing power politics above stopping ISIS.
This American is disgusted with DC.... period!
maybe you weren't born yet for some, but any of these (and more): Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Central America, Panama, Grenada, Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya could have been your threshold of disgust with DC, much before Syria
the plan was regime change by any means, including mercenaries, ISIS
the CIA demanded that ISIS be barbaric for effect (scare Syrians or blame Assad to cause regime change, but the Syrians see the US for what they are, terrorists)
the wag the dog missions were to pretend to attack ISIS while destroying Syrian infrastructure and supplying ISIS with supplies to continue their terror
end terrorism? it's US foreign policy, a tool of conquest, been that way since Afghanistan, Al Qaeda has always been CIA, used them in Iraq for more of the same, terrorized Libya, then went down to Mali to assist the American puppet regime (Mali overthrown the year before by the US) so that the French and Areva could secure the Uranium for their exclusivity (and now the French and Al Qaeda are in Niger for the same, damn Imperialists, Colonialists, thieves and murderers).
stop watching CNN, you're missing the plot
the terrorists are where the US needs them
Finally the real thing, it isn't coca-cola..it's a Russian battleship. Let's see how the western coalition reacts togetherwith their so-called international community, i am puzzled!!
Russia is probably deploying the carrier as a way to guarantee air support. IF something happens to their air bases in Syria, they would lose all air support. The carrier guarantees them air cover. The carrier also provides an excellent place to evacuate wounded soldiers for medical care.
All this discussion about sinking carriers is a moot point - there are NO naval battles in the Mediterranean right now.
What is noticeable is that Russia is SCALING UP ... commiting more and more resources. Their involvement is growing. The GREATER SYRIAN WAR .. is becoming larger.
Good points.
I find all of this a bit mind bending to think about, as it is an intricate game theory construct. Russia is not up to the military strength they want and so have been trying to avoid conflicts in every way possible. Thus, they have conceded losses of all types in the past several years. The problem with Syria and Ukraine is that they are both lynch pins or points of no return. Once the west gets control of them, the rules of the game change dramatically, with the west being in a strategically overpowering position.
Unique about this "game" is that Russia appears to have more in total and more lethal nuclear weapons. Who really knows, but the publicly available numbers are this way, with Russia having more "multiple" in their MIRVS, and larger numbers overall. This situation would seem to make the idea of all out war less palatable, but the issue then becomes how far each side can push - the west with lots of resources and Russia with few - before it goes Dr. No.
I can see crap heads like Kim Dong Unnn thinking firing nukes would be okay since if he has any, it's maybe only one or two, and they're probably just dirty bombs - not thermo nukes. But surely anyone who has significant nukes will KNOW that firing off a couple of hundred bigbombs would pretty much depopulate the population of the world - or at the least totally destroy civilization as we know it just because of the nuclear fallout contamination of the entire face of the world?
And just a thought... has any one else considered the Jerry Pournelle/Larry Niven book "a Mote In God's Eye" as possibly speculation about the human past - especially the idea that the "Moties" have repeatedly destroyed themselves again and again, their world heals from the destruction, repeat ad nauseum?
I read that book years ago. Fun.
Actually, the idea of repetitive human races is old and widespread. You will find it strongly in the Hindu/Vedic philosophies, and even in the Mayan mythologies. If I remember correctly, this current human race is supposed to be the fifth try by the "gods" to create decent humans. Previous versions (like old software) were discarded/destroyed.
I once read also about a supposed conversation between a Greek (was it Socrates?) and the Egyptian high priests concerning the past. The Egyptians were condescendingly telling Socrates that the Greeks were so young that they knew nothing about the far past and the great civilizations of yore.
Obviously, that strategy is prone to all types of problems,
I can't see any problems.
The aim of the strategy is to keep a justification for a strong military, while not actually maintaining a threat which could damage the US greatly. No one cares about minor terrorist hits, they only kill a few of the little people, but starting a shooting match with Russia or China is right out.
So far, the US has managed to keep the Middle East destabilised, and hence justify their huge military budget which keeps so many important people in funds, while only causing problems for Europe. Looks like win-win to me...
And if the US has to send in ground troops, all those handsome Russian soldiers will be waiting. A win-win all around!
Wrong information. "Kuznecov" is not going anywhere
Russian Northern fleet denied it sent the aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov" to Syria. At the moment, the ship is in Murmansk, undergoing final testing before it departs to Barents sea for training exercise.
This is slightly on target -- Does anyone here subscribe to Stratfor. com and, would you recommend their trends and analysis? Did they suspect and predict this intervention by the east? Thanks in advance.
Personally, I come to this website to learn as much as I can and a lot of it is over my head. So, I don't know about Stratfor. But you might compare the news here to what they say there.
Anyhow, I loved that song, "Rose of Cimarron" by Poco. Thanks for reminding me of it.
I subscribed to Stratfor briefly. They have a special offer like 2.48/ week. Cancel anytime.
If you are patient, you can find many of their articles for free on the web 2-3 days after they have been posted at
Stratfor. Georgie Friedman is a former CIA spook who thinks Russia is the bigger threat to the US and not China.
He sees Russia further de-stabilizing over the next decade. Policy dictate is aimed at Russia moreso than
China.
Not exactly an aircraft carrier in the traditional sense--
"heavy aircraft-carrying missile cruiser" – intended to support and defend strategic missile-carrying submarines, surface ships, and naval missile-carrying aircraft of the Russian Navy.

What will all those "leaders" in DC do if they have to fight a real war?
With all these oatmeal heads, especially the kosher ones, running around the place, it seems the world really does need a policeman. Good thing Russia is there on the job, even if they are policing their own interests defensively the rest of us get some benefit from keeping these mad dogs in check.
Have you ever seen anyone not policin their own interests ?
the world does not need one "policeman" and I think Russia knows it...it is better to go to the system we had in 19th century. Each large country should have its sphere of influence, protecting their particular allies. The world must be divided, because it is not possible for one country to rule it. And when there are more powers, none of them will be tempted to think that it can do anything it wants. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Russia obviously wants to take care of the Middle East. Why not. It will be a difficult task, but Russia understands muslims much better than Westerners. China will have its own sphere of influence. India also. Etc. etc. You can see that these countries are able to cooperate, even if they don't like each other much, like China and India, who are right now doing joint military exercises to boost friendship. And this is also Putin's merit. He has been attempting to unite all countries, which the USA divided. Well, the Middle East will be a very difficult prblem to solve. But those Middle Eastern countries, who will not get on the Russian side, will be soon very sorry, because they will be engulfed by chaos. Turkey is the first to fall. Saudi Arabia seems to be in deep meditation now. Russia or not? Russia or not? Their survival depends on that decision.
The strategy I can identify is, "Strategies are over-rated. so we do not need a strategy."
The Carrier stuff is just for looks, symbolic. In any real modern war you don't want to be on an aircraft carrier, even with its fleet.
The leader of the speech making world and prize winner in-chief will not take kindly to being called a porridge head, Mr Putin.
You just dare send in your rustbucket and you'll have to deal with Mr Ketchup!
War ships are so quaint.
The U.S. is remoteing drones from Montana….
All it takes is a few well placed detonations of metalic spherules in Earth orbit to knock off the intire GPS system and kiss your drones goodbye
Problem with a carrier group is you maybe only need one successful battlefield nuke to explode to fuck the lot up.
The carrier is a formidable wepon, but nothing compares to the modern day submarine that our comrades have deployed around the world.
Yes and those M East winters can last forever!

That's funny; I got downvoted a ton yesterday for suggesting the Russian government is exaggerating its success. There are a lot of dug-in jihadis to dig out.
According to Stratfor, Saudis supplyling TOWs to the Syrian rebels factions:
http://www.onenewspage.com/n/Europe/7559xsp4c/Russia-confronts-the-Gulf-...
But I'm sure they'll just bounce off that superior Russian armor as everyone knows the Russians, like the
Chinese, are just so much better and smarter than the rest of us.
Destroy all the Russian armor you want; Raytheon will be happy to build more!
According to Stratfor, Saudis supplyling TOWs to the Syrian rebels factions . . .
They may be but MOST of the TOW II missles that have ended up in ISIS/ISIL's hands have come DIRECTLY from the USA/Raytheon via Georgia, with the direct help of Turkey and U.S. companies like Bechtel to truck them into Iraq and Syria. USA!, USA!, USA!, USA! . . . . barf.
I love my country but fear my goverment.
Russia's Aircraft Carrier Will Not Travel to Syria, Despite Media Reports

That's it then (!)
This is the only battlefield Russia has at this time... a great time to due a shakedown cruise and see how the weapons systems work...what a wonderful training opportunity..
Park that fucker off of DCand eradicate the filth that occupies that hellhole
Sweet boat!
I'd put a turbo on that thing and take it to the track!
I bet if you put an aero package on it you'd get another 3 seconds in the 1/4!
Better yet, you need to Mexican-ize it and get those "turbo" and "flame" stickers from Pep Boys to put on it. Also it needs one of those giant bull decals on the driver's side so the ladies know this is the "stud" ship.
You think they got a V8 in that thing?
Can they get it to jump up and down in the water?
Is their battle flag an outline of the chrome mud flap girl?
Don't forget the flourescent green windshield wipers!

They could live to be 100.
Say it ain't so!!!
The ski jump flight deck was designed for the Russkie version of the Harrier; the Brits did the same thing if I recall. Not sure why they would need a carrier when they already have air bases in the host country. The real escalation will be (already was?) the introduction of ground to air missles capable of taking out US aircraft.
Careful, ISIS might have an old diesel sub lurking in the med. They were trying to give it to the moderate Syrian rebels, but it accidently got into the wrong hands.
I wonder what effect a USS MAINE type "accident" in the Bosporus strait would have on re-supply in Syria?
Another USS liberty type incident, anyone?
USSA'S chosen racers always bite the hand that feeds coz they own it, but I can't see the psychopaths teasing THE BEAR.
Or maybe the frigate USS Stark !!!
This is all so stupid.
One minute you are ISIS. Take off the black mask, you are a civilian.
Morons trying to fight wars against ghosts.
>"The cruiser dock repair completed until the end of the week
>go to the coast of Syria, where he joined the operation to destroy
>the group" Islamic State "," - a spokesman said.
Whatever.
I don't know whatever about the construction, status, or deployment plans for this carrier, but I do know that if you already have land bases there you don't much need or want any carrier-based operations that tend to be fantastically more expensive.
For that matter, has Russia deployed any bomber-class aircraft to the fight? Does Russia even have anything in the payload class of the US's B-52, B-1, or B-2? Even with local bases, targeting something like ISIS only with tactical air is a dubious exercise - and the US doing so with carrier-based aircraft refueling coming and going, has been a sick joke, which is why Russia still finds it a target-rich environment.
Maybe if they put wheels on this carrier and roll it up the road it will scare ISIS into surrender.
“Obviously, that strategy is prone to all types of problems…” yet continuously very profitable for the military-industrial-prison-security complex.
Looks like the Kremlin reads Zerohedge cause it is denying these rumors: http://sputniknews.com/world/20151014/1028520336/russia-syria-aircraft-c...

There is a correlation between all of the young military age Syrian men becoming illegal aliens and Russia defending the Syrian government. They Got Out of Dodge!
almost all the refugees are from iraq where the usa is defending the iraqis against isis. most refugees in the world are running from something the usa started and is neck deep in.
they should park it off the coast of israel until the suria op is over. it would be fun to watch the israeli reaction.

Okay, just so everyone is clear, the Ruskies aren't combatting terror, they're propping up the Assad regime.

Anyone have a updated location for our carrier battle groups?
Those don't belong to us silly. Those are property of the Oligarchy.
Well we used to get some Stratfor maps...
25.0000° N, 71.0000° W
Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the leader of the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda “Jabhat al-Nusra”, has offered EUR 3 million for the head of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Separately he offered EUR 2 million for the head of the leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah.
The group purblished audio in which Al-Golani was saying he will pay “EUR 3 million to the person who will kill Bashar al-Assad and will wipe him out of the history”.
Criminal putin regime supports ISIS and attacks rebels who fight against ISIS
It is because criminal putin regime supports terrorists like for example - it is criminal putin regime who shot down MH17 airplane killing 298 people.
Criminal putin regime has only about 1 to 2 years time for when it's foreign reserve fund will run out and there will be Russian economic meltdown. Criminal putin regime doesn't have left much time - so it seeks a war with west.
West must play it cool - just like with other criminal regimes, like one in North Korea.
1 message is equal 1 potato
You have to know that on this site the only criminals that matter are the ones who are squatting their greedy asses in DC and on Wall Street.
You should stop sniffing potatoes before posting

Russia's heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov is not going to be deployed to Syria, according to the Northern Fleet spokesperson.
Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, will head to the Barents Sea for a planned mission, the Russian Northern Fleet spokesman Vadim Serga said Wednesday.
The statement came amid media reports claiming Russia's flagship aircraft carrier was on its way to Syria to assist the ongoing Russian airborne campaign against the ISIL militants.
"The heavy aircraft carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov has no long-term missions or other military assignments to look forward to any time soon," Serga said. "The ship will soon head out to the Barents Sea to perform planned combat training tasks and support a naval aviation regiment of the Northern Fleet."
The aircraft carrier is currently docked at its home port in Murmansk, in northwestern Russia.

Yea, in war time as it is now between Russia and the west they will tell you where truly it is going. It is one thing that is really top secret in the Navy: where the ship is and where is going and when.
By the way in 1980 chief of staff of the US Navy was asked, after spending tens of billions of dollar for it, what is combat worthiness of the Aircraft carrier (AC) in the global conflict.
The answer was that AC should survive few hours deployed in the see and days while in the port, after commencement of global hostilities. And that was at the technical level of 1980 of the ship killing missile technology. Only nuke subs would survive.
AC are the latest reincarnation of the gunboats used to terrorize defenseless nations all for tenfold price and profit to MIC for nothing.

I dont believe the carrier was was sent there to impress people, though it has good psychological value, as well as a place for any injured Russians , strategic meetings with players where absolute security is necessary. . I would not scoff at the Russians for only having one or two vs 18 floating environmental disasters waiting to happen. Its how you use them. They have learned..or always actually knew how to make do with little., we should not under estimate them, or overestimate the invincibility of the other.
This was one othe things I read about which underscores that.

U.S. aircraft carrier and part of its escort “sunk” by French submarine during drills off Florida
If you thought aircraft carriers were invincible you were wrong.
On Mar. 4, the French Ministry of Defense released some interesting details, about the activity conducted by one of its nuclear-powered attack submarine (SNA) in the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.
According to French MoD website (that is no longer online, even if you can still find a cached version of the article titled “Le SNA Saphir en entraînement avec l’US Navy au large de la Floride”), the Saphir submarine has recently taken part in a major exercise with the U.S. Navy off Florida.
The aim of the exercise was joint training with U.S. Carrier Strike Group 12 made by the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, several Ticonderoga cruisers or Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and a Los Angeles-class submarine, ahead of their operational deployment.
The scenario of the drills saw some imaginary states assaulting American economic and territorial interests; threats faced by a naval force led by USS Theodore Roosevelt.
During the first phase of the exercise, the Saphir was integrated into the friendly force to support anti-submarine warfare (ASW) by cooperating with U.S. P-3C Orion P-8A Poseidon MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft): its role was to share all the underwater contacts with the other ASW assets.
In the second phase of the exercise, the Saphir was integrated with the enemy forces and its mission was to locate the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and its accompanying warships and prepare to attack the strike group.
While the fictious political situation deteriorated, the Saphir quietly slipped in the heart of the multi-billion-dollar aircraft carrier’s defensive screen, while avoiding detection by ASW assets.
On the morning of the last day, the order to attack was finally given, allowing the Saphir to pretend-sinking the USS Theodore Roosevelt and most of its escort.

Russia must establish no fly zone in Syria
moonofalabama.org describes the huge battle coming up between Hama and Idleb. The blogger, a retired German artillery officer, mentions that "The civil airport in Latakia has been closed to civil traffic and will be used by the Russian airforce to support the upcoming attack. This is necessary as the average number of sorties a small airport with one landing strip can handle is only about 100 sorties per day. With a second active airport now available some 200 to 300 sorties/day will be available to support the Syrian army." The aircraft carrier will help further in crucial air support. It hardly matters what shape the carrier is in, as long as it can be defended. The Houthis in Yemen have managed to sink two naval ships, one of them Saudi. The Neocons will be trying their best to give ISIS the same sort of support.
The word Ukraine literally means "borderland". In the Russian empire it was, "The borderland". "The Ukraine".
