Russia Sends Its Only Aircraft Carrier To Syria, Signals It Is Just Getting Started

Tyler Durden's picture

As should be abundantly clear by now, The Kremlinis adopting a “slightly” different strategy when it comes to combatting terror in the Mid-East than that adopted by the US and its Western and regional allies.

The strategy of the US and its allies seems to go something like this: 1) covertly arm and train groups who you know might ultimately become terrorists because arming and training these groups may be a way to destabilize unfriendly regimes, 2) wait for blowback, 3) launch serious effort to combat terror if unfriendly regime has been “successfully” replaced by puppet government, or launch half-hearted effort to combat terror if situation still fluid and regime still clings to power.

Obviously, that strategy is prone to all types of problems, and sensing that the US and its allies might have finally met their foreign policy blunder Waterloo in Syria, Russia decided to call everyone’s bluff by launching a real war on terror. Of course, this war conveniently restores the regime of one of Moscow’s allies, but in the end the result is the same: anyone who is a terrorist and who is also fighting Assad in Syria is in for big trouble because Russia is using this is as an opportunity to reassert itself on the world stage and also to fire up a long-dormant military juggernaut.

Now, on the heels of hundreds of airstrikes accompanied by dramatic video footage as well as cruise missile attacks launched from Russian warships in the Caspian, The Kremlin is sending its lone heavy aircraft carrier into the fight. This is only the ship's sixth deployment in history.

Here’s more from Flashnord (Google translated):

Heavy aircraft carrier (heavy aircraft), "Admiral Kuznetsov" is Russia's only aircraft carrier, the weekend will go from Murmansk to the shores of Syria, said FlashNord source in the Northern Fleet command.

"The cruiser dock repair completed until the end of the week go to the coast of Syria, where he joined the operation to destroy the group" Islamic State "," - a spokesman said.

According to him, from May to August this year was held aircraft carrier dock repair 82 Shipyard in Roslyakovo (Murmansk region). Then, on a regular docked in Murmansk, he walked up to the restoration of full combat readiness.

Since September 30, Russia carries out air operations in Syria with the aim of destroying the objects of the "Islamic state."

Here are some images:

Here's a bit of color via Reuters from earlier this year. Notably, the Kuznetsov isn't known for being in particularly great working order which probably makes the chances of some kind of accident that much greater:

When the Soviet Union launched Kuznetsov in 1985, it was a major technical accomplishment for the then-superpower. Moscow began assembling Varyag, a sister ship of Kuznetsov, around the same time. It also started work on a true full-size carrier, as big as anything the United States builds.

But the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991 abruptly halted the carrier program.

Russia was left with Kuznetsov as its sole flattop and, deprived of funds and Ukraine’s assistance, has struggled to keep the vessel in working condition. Since the ship was commissioned into frontline service in the early 1990s, Kuznetsov has deployed just five times. Each deployment, lasting between three and six months, saw the flattop sail from its home port in northern Russia around Europe and into the Mediterranean as a show of force and to demonstrate support for Russia’s allies in the region, including Syria.

Looks like they are doing just fine without one being they aren't that far away.  Syria is a Russian ally, with a Russian base.  I'm sure if Russia decided to blow up a US ally, such as Israel, this would all be spun quite differently.

Yes, they are using rest of Assads army, Iranians and Hezbollah, as well as different Shia paramilitaries as ground force and cover them from air. So far – much noise, no big results, but let’s see what happens next. Also at some point Saudis, US etc. will recover from first shock and then the things will turn even uglier

Apparently the Pentagon was unaware that Russian SSN-30A Kalibr cruise missiles could accurately hit targets 1500 km away. As pointed out by Pepe Escobar, Russia has created a de facto no fly zone over Syria and southern Turkey, and to further back this up, the Russian Navy cruiser Moskva, carrying 64 S-300 ship-to-air missiles is now docked in Latakia. It has been reported on Oct. 3 and 4, Russia violated Turkish airspace by Su-30SM and Su-24 aircraft, with the Russian Su-30SM maintaining a radar lock on the F-16s for 5 minutes. The Russian message to Turkey/NATO is pretty clear. For an update, see- Say hello to my cruise missiles by Pepe Escobar; Link: atimes.com/2015/10/say-hello-to-my-cruise-missiles-escobar

A/C carriers are last wars equipment just like the WWI Battleships were in WWII. Plus they're mostly for offensive rather than defensive use which is why Russia doesn't have them. The ussa empire wannabees use them to slap smaller non conforming country's into obedience. Aircraft carriers are pretty much useless with today's missile technology and can be taken out by hyper-sonic missiles launched a thousand miles away or silent subs operating in the area.

After the redcoats blathering about firing on Russia's aircraft last week Russia has decided to give their attack aircraft fighter escorts. This Aircraft Cruiser may have that mission.

As for ussa/nato placing a no-fly zone,,, doubtful,,, ussa/nato are used to bully defenseless nations. Russian pilots won't back down easily. Besides, it's too late.

Russia is probably deploying the carrier as a way to guarantee air support.  IF something happens to their air bases in Syria, they would lose all air support.  The carrier guarantees them air cover.  The carrier also provides an excellent place to evacuate wounded soldiers for medical care.

All this discussion about sinking carriers is a moot point - there are NO naval battles in the Mediterranean right now.

What is noticeable is that Russia is SCALING UP ... commiting more and more resources.  Their involvement is growing.  The GREATER SYRIAN WAR .. is becoming larger.

Wed, 10/14/2015 - 12:18 | 6667288 Tao 4 the Show
Tao 4 the Show's picture

Good points.

I find all of this a bit mind bending to think about, as it is an intricate game theory construct. Russia is not up to the military strength they want and so have been trying to avoid conflicts in every way possible. Thus, they have conceded losses of all types in the past several years. The problem with Syria and Ukraine is that they are both lynch pins or points of no return. Once the west gets control of them, the rules of the game change dramatically, with the west being in a strategically overpowering position.

Unique about this "game" is that Russia appears to have more in total and more lethal nuclear weapons. Who really knows, but the publicly available numbers are this way, with Russia having more "multiple" in their MIRVS, and larger numbers overall. This situation would seem to make the idea of all out war less palatable, but the issue then becomes how far each side can push - the west with lots of resources and Russia with few - before it goes Dr. No.

Wed, 10/14/2015 - 13:34 | 6667567 nofluer

I can see crap heads like Kim Dong Unnn thinking firing nukes would be okay since if he has any, it's maybe only one or two, and they're probably just dirty bombs - not thermo nukes. But surely anyone who has significant nukes will KNOW that firing off a couple of hundred bigbombs would pretty much depopulate the population of the world - or at the least totally destroy civilization as we know it just because of the nuclear fallout contamination of the entire face of the world?

And just a thought... has any one else considered the Jerry Pournelle/Larry Niven book "a Mote In God's Eye" as possibly speculation about the human past - especially the idea that the "Moties" have repeatedly destroyed themselves again and again, their world heals from the destruction, repeat ad nauseum?

I read that book years ago. Fun.

Actually, the idea of repetitive human races is old and widespread. You will find it strongly in the Hindu/Vedic philosophies, and even in the Mayan mythologies. If I remember correctly, this current human race is supposed to be the fifth try by the "gods" to create decent humans. Previous versions (like old software) were discarded/destroyed.

I once read also about a supposed conversation between a Greek (was it Socrates?) and the Egyptian high priests concerning the past. The Egyptians were condescendingly telling Socrates that the Greeks were so young that they knew nothing about the far past and the great civilizations of yore.

Obviously, that strategy is prone to all types of problems,

I can't see any problems.

The aim of the strategy is to keep a justification for a strong military, while not actually maintaining a threat which could damage the US greatly. No one cares about minor terrorist hits, they only kill a few of the little people, but starting a shooting match with Russia or China is right out.

So far, the US has managed to keep the Middle East destabilised, and hence justify their huge military budget which keeps so many important people in funds, while only causing problems for Europe.  Looks like win-win to me...

Good thing Russia is there on the job, even if they are policing their own interests defensively the rest of us get some benefit from keeping these mad dogs in check.

the world does not need one "policeman" and I think Russia knows it...it is better to go to the system we had in 19th century. Each large country should have its sphere of influence, protecting their particular allies. The world must be divided, because it is not possible for one country to rule it. And when there are more powers, none of them will be tempted to think that it can do anything it wants. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Russia obviously wants to take care of the Middle East. Why not. It will be a difficult task, but Russia understands muslims much better than Westerners. China will have its own sphere of influence. India also. Etc. etc. You can see that these countries are able to cooperate, even if they don't like each other much, like China and India, who are right now doing joint military exercises to boost friendship. And this is also Putin's merit. He has been attempting to unite all countries, which the USA divided. Well, the Middle East will be a very difficult prblem to solve. But those Middle Eastern countries, who will not get on the Russian side, will be soon very sorry, because they will be engulfed by chaos. Turkey is the first to fall. Saudi Arabia seems to be in deep meditation now. Russia or not? Russia or not? Their survival depends on that decision.

I don't know whatever about the construction, status, or deployment plans for this carrier, but I do know that if you already have land bases there you don't much need or want any carrier-based operations that tend to be fantastically more expensive.

For that matter, has Russia deployed any bomber-class aircraft to the fight?  Does Russia even have anything in the payload class of the US's B-52, B-1, or B-2?  Even with local bases, targeting something like ISIS only with tactical air is a dubious exercise - and the US doing so with carrier-based aircraft refueling coming and going, has been a sick joke, which is why Russia still finds it a target-rich environment.

Maybe if they put wheels on this carrier and roll it up the road it will scare ISIS into surrender.

Criminal putin regime supports ISIS and attacks rebels who fight against ISIS

It is because criminal putin regime supports terrorists like for example - it is criminal putin regime who shot down MH17 airplane killing 298 people.

Criminal putin regime has only about 1 to 2 years time for when it's foreign reserve fund will run out and there will be Russian economic meltdown. Criminal putin regime doesn't have left much time - so it seeks a war with west.

West must play it cool - just like with other criminal regimes, like one in North Korea.

Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, will head to the Barents Sea for a planned mission, the Russian Northern Fleet spokesman Vadim Serga said Wednesday.

The statement came amid media reports claiming Russia's flagship aircraft carrier was on its way to Syria to assist the ongoing Russian airborne campaign against the ISIL militants.

Yea, in war time as it is now between Russia and the west they will tell you where truly it is going. It is one thing that is really top secret in the Navy: where the ship is and where is going and when.

By the way in 1980 chief of staff of the US Navy was asked, after spending tens of billions of dollar for it, what is combat worthiness of the Aircraft carrier (AC) in the global conflict.

The answer was that AC should survive few hours deployed in the see and days while in the port, after commencement of global hostilities. And that was at the technical level of 1980 of the ship killing missile technology. Only nuke subs would survive.

AC are the latest reincarnation of the gunboats used to terrorize defenseless nations all for tenfold price and profit to MIC for nothing.

I dont believe the carrier was was sent there to impress people, though it has good psychological value, as well as a place for any injured Russians , strategic meetings with players where absolute security is necessary. . I would not scoff at the Russians for only having one or two vs 18 floating environmental disasters waiting to happen. Its how you use them. They have learned..or always actually knew how to make do with little., we should not under estimate them, or overestimate the invincibility of the other.

This was one othe things I read about which underscores that.

http://theaviationist.com/2015/03/05/us-aircraft-carrier-sunk-by-subs/
U.S. aircraft carrier and part of its escort “sunk” by French submarine during drills off Florida
If you thought aircraft carriers were invincible you were wrong.

On Mar. 4, the French Ministry of Defense released some interesting details, about the activity conducted by one of its nuclear-powered attack submarine (SNA) in the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

According to French MoD website (that is no longer online, even if you can still find a cached version of the article titled “Le SNA Saphir en entraînement avec l’US Navy au large de la Floride”), the Saphir submarine has recently taken part in a major exercise with the U.S. Navy off Florida.

The aim of the exercise was joint training with U.S. Carrier Strike Group 12 made by the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, several Ticonderoga cruisers or Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and a Los Angeles-class submarine, ahead of their operational deployment.

The scenario of the drills saw some imaginary states assaulting American economic and territorial interests; threats faced by a naval force led by USS Theodore Roosevelt.

During the first phase of the exercise, the Saphir was integrated into the friendly force to support anti-submarine warfare (ASW) by cooperating with U.S. P-3C Orion P-8A Poseidon MPA (Maritime Patrol Aircraft): its role was to share all the underwater contacts with the other ASW assets.

In the second phase of the exercise, the Saphir was integrated with the enemy forces and its mission was to locate the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and its accompanying warships and prepare to attack the strike group.

While the fictious political situation deteriorated, the Saphir quietly slipped in the heart of the multi-billion-dollar aircraft carrier’s defensive screen, while avoiding detection by ASW assets.

On the morning of the last day, the order to attack was finally given, allowing the Saphir to pretend-sinking the USS Theodore Roosevelt and most of its escort.

moonofalabama.org describes the huge battle coming up between Hama and Idleb. The blogger, a retired German artillery officer, mentions that "The civil airport in Latakia has been closed to civil traffic and will be used by the Russian airforce to support the upcoming attack. This is necessary as the average number of sorties a small airport with one landing strip can handle is only about 100 sorties per day. With a second active airport now available some 200 to 300 sorties/day will be available to support the Syrian army." The aircraft carrier will help further in crucial air support. It hardly matters what shape the  carrier is in, as long as it can be defended. The Houthis in Yemen have managed to sink two naval ships, one of them Saudi. The Neocons will be trying their best to give ISIS the same sort of support.
