America's Top 10 Fears
While nearly a decade ago, Americans celebrated the arrival of "hope and change", since then "hope" (not to mention "change") has been all but eradicated (if only for the vast majority of the population), and has been replaced with an emotion that is its polar opposite. Fear.
Fear of government corruption (which we were delighted to find in the top spot), fear of terrorist attacks, fear of the NSA, fear of ID theft, fear of cyberterrorists, and even fear of economic collapse... all the way in 8th place.
And yes, "fear of clowns" is in there too.
In an attempt to quantify these fears, the Chapman University Survey of American Fears provides an unprecedented look into the fears of average Americans.
In April of 2015, a random sample of 1,541 adults from across the United States were asked their level of fear about eighty-eight different fears across a huge variety of topics ranging from crime, the government, disasters, personal anxieties, technology and many others.
Domains of Fear
There were 10 major “domains” of fear addressed by the survey, including:
| Fear Domain | Types of Questions Included |
| Crime | Murder, rape, theft, burglary, fraud, identity theft |
| Daily Life | Romantic rejection, ridicule, talking to strangers |
| Environment | Global warming, overpopulation, pollution |
| Government | Government corruption, Obamacare, drones, gun control, immigration issues |
| Judgment of others | Appearance, weight, age, race |
| Man-Made Disasters | Bio-warfare, terrorism, nuclear attacks |
| Natural Disasters | Earthquakes, droughts, floods, hurricanes |
| Personal Anxieties | Tight spaces, public speaking, clowns, vaccines |
| Personal Future | Dying, illness, running out of money, unemployment |
| Technology | Artificial intelligence, robots, cyber-terrorism |
Top Fear Domains, 2015
Each fear question asks Americans to rate their level of fear on a scale ranging from 1 (not afraid) to 4 (very afraid). The average score for each domain of fear provides insight into what types of fear are of greatest concern to Americans in 2015.
On average, Americans expressed the highest levels of fear about man-made disasters, such as terrorist attacks, followed by fears about technology, including corporate and government tracing of personal data and fears about the government (such as government corruption and ObamaCare). The complete, ranked list of Domains of Fear follows:
| Domain of Fear | Average Fear Score (out of 4) |
| Man-Made Disasters | 2.15 |
| Technology | 2.07 |
| Government | 2.06 |
| Environment | 1.97 |
| Personal Future | 1.95 |
| Natural Disasters | 1.95 |
| Crime | 1.72 |
| Personal Anxieties | 1.63 |
| Daily Life | 1.51 |
| Judgment of Others | 1.31 |

Fear is inversely proportional to intellect, knowledge, ability and competence.
that's risk. fear is mostly just irrational emotion despite all that information.
"Fear" and "threats" are the two most favored words in the "home of the brave".
Or maybe "fries" and "Coke".
I'll miss them both, especially the Coke Classic.
I wish they still put cocaine in Coca Cola... I would drink lots...
they don't? i'll stop wasting my money then
The only fear I have is of the unknown. Prepare for the worse, hope for the best. I won't be going quietly into the dark. I have night vision capabilities. The back of my ball cap reads: "For Darkness be thy Ally".
What no constipation or wee wee leaks? American television is filled w/ such products.
By that standard, erectile dysfunction and being depressed.
If you fear, they have won.
and the scariest stat is the lonliness stat, the source of all the serial killers.
are people really that lonely?
Because government IS corruption, it's understandable.
My biggest fear is the disruption of the supply chain of the things I need to survive:
T-Bone Steak, Rotisserie Chicken, Smoked Salmon, Stinky Cheese...
(I figure I could make my own beer and wine and grow my own doobie if things went south)

86% believe that a 72 hour emergency supply is a good idea, yet 72% haven't bothered because 51% believe that a "first responder" will bring em a 'subway sandwich combo.' I never cease to be amazed.
So a first responder is the first delivery guy that will answer the phone and take your order. I did not know that.
Funny how the masses fear "corporate spying" more than GOVERNMENT spying...
As if there's all that much difference.
You put those two numbers together to get the real number since they are one in the same; fascism. The implication is large corporations; yet people give up their privacy to these corporation and I know because I read the "Privacy Policies" and should be renamed "Personal Information Disclosure Policy".
I received a credit card application in the mail recently and I read that by signing the agreement you agree to allow them to use some or ALL the information to their "affiliates" and "business partners", which they do not name. You agree to accept emails, phone calls and text messages from the same. Think about that for a minute.
just stick a line through the offending parts, and initial it. write in the same ink that by sending you a card they accept the changed made and initialized by you.
Basic contract law...
Wouldn't worry me. But governments have GUNS...
Americans are always peeing their pants, urged on by their ridiculous media, it's embarrassing.
B.S. survey; Americans #1 fear is loosing their SMART devices; particularly their SMART phones. "And the survey says; 80/100"
My greatest fear is being NDAA 'detained' and having that bird cage fitted over my head for some rat reeducation sessions. ;0
I fear the transporter has malfunctioned and left me here in parallel hell.
I actually performed physical time/space travel last night. I consumed so much alcohol i passed out, ...and Poof! Whaddya know? The next thing I knew when I opened my eyes I was five miles away from my house in the back seat of somebody's car this morning.
"Being too stupid to understand basic probability" was not on the list; it would be good to see those 'fear domains' expressed in terms of their historical probability of occurring to a randomly selected individual (for example: for an individual living in Upper Buttfuck MO, the risk of dying in a terror attack is as near to zero as makes no odds; the risk of the same event in DC is perceptibly above zero... but both are less than the unconditional risk of being shot by a cop).
People's expectations of risk are conditioned by the number of hours they spend watching mainsteam 'news'.
Also... it is just me, or are these stories aimed at people who are mildly retarded?
100% of us are victims of government corruption. Seems like a reasonable fear to me.
Sounds like you watch too much tv as well.
you left out "fear of zero hedges" ....
Intersting, clowns, air travle, etc.. What about getting killed in your car? This happens about 30,000 times a year. Clowns killings + whooping cough + measles + commercial carrier death maybe 400 or so.
Guess I missed the boat on the fear index. About the only thing I'm afraid of is somebody catching me jerking off while I'm driving.
It's a risky business.
- The words (and underlying concepts) 'no' and 'maybe'
- Prolonged cessation of reward (sugar, caffeine, calories, full gob, sugar water, alcohol, sex, video games, TV, drugs, steady supply of victims)
- Reversal of obesity stats to 1970 level, when four-foot wide fuckers stuck in the bus door TURNED HEADS
- Expectation to have grasped some basic knowledge and life skills upon leaving school
- Ability to view oneself and one's country through the eyes of others
- Fewer than 10 firearms per capita
- Problems that can't be swallowed, fucked, bought off, beaten, shot, shouted, prayed, or ignored away
- Inability to claim to victim status & unearned entitlement; refusal of others to accept claims of exceptionalism
- Punctuation, spelling, grammar, vocabulary; someone taking the crayons away
- Expectation of honesty, common human decency, politeness & manners, shutting your fucking faces occasionally when you holiday abroad (I KNOW IT'S A FUCKING SCONE WITH CREAM ON NOW SHUT THE FUCK UP, YOU'RE EMBARASSING THE OTHER MAMMALS)
- Request to fuck off back to the US, take your military bases with you, stop killing everyone and have a nice day. PLEASE? Just this one?
- Inability to scapegoat religion / race / political affiliation / economy etc as the cause of EVERYTHING BAD (exception: blame yourselves)
- Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Floyd, Deep Purple, King Crimson, Bowie, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Killing Joke, The Cure, The Smiths etc -90% of the best music in history isn't American. And fuck the blues (okay, Jimi was cool - but he had to make it in the UK).
- Subtelty not signposted by emoticons; abstract concepts, THE LIST GOES ON AND ON...
David Bowie - I'm Afraid of Americanshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPVrFIP0CMs
"...90% of the best music in history isn't American." That's why you share a moniker with the American band Soundgarden... right...
Or not having toilet paper when I take a crap. Terrifying.

I had breakfast in a chinese shopping center one sunday morning after a big night on the booze. After breakfast I suddenly got hit with the "I need to take a massive, urgent, morning after too much grog dump of the century." No way to make it back to the hotel in time and no one spoke english so I used scary hand gestures to indicate to the waitress I needed to find a toilet. One of my biggest fears came true. No sit down toilets, just a hole in the ground, but there wasn't any other option. It was a mostly successful operation except for a couple of annoying issues. 1) in a chinese restroom, the toilet paper is on a big roll at the entrance to the restroom. I was still carrying the napkin from the coffee shop and that had to suffice. After a dump like that it was an unwinnable battle. 2) My knees are so fucked I found I couldn't stand up without putting my hand on the floor to support me. You don't want to know what that floor looked like. The only good thing to come out of that experience was that the next person in there got to enjoy it as much as I did.
Well damn it!! Now I've got to change mine from Government Corruption to Chinese Bathrooms, thanks for
the imagery. Now where's my damn eraser? Oh well, both fears involve things nasty and full of shit, so since
I can't find my eraser I'll let it be.
I think we've all been there before.
Quite a story. I guess much of China isn't much for "vitreous china"?
That shopping center alone had more marble in it than the average Italian city.
But not in the toilet industry, apparently?
You should have moved out of the East Village when you had the chance

Richard Simmons?
Okay, you were bullied pretty bad in school, weren't you?
How do people like you happen? Go and ask a grown-up for help (A BIG PERSON), try not to get mad at them when they tell about your mistake, and remember:
IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE A BAD PERSON! In fact, you're already qualified to write a Self-Help book!
Just make sure not to operate any machinery, hire, supervize or manage any staff, process any information (that's big people talk for "understanding thoughts in your head"), handle money, try to understand big words, make any decisions, or breed. For now, work on coloring inside the lines, not getting upset with hard things like doors and chairs, keeping your special parts to yourself, and using your drool rag.
Hit a sore spot. Apologies.
I'm going with 'love handles' for men and dimpley celluite thighs for women

The fear that everyone I run into/meet is a clueless fuck - and the fear is daily!
Hey, Mon! That's an easy one to control! Just quit running into/meeting people!
death is really my main fear, and my secondary fears are financial and health, because those areas might impact my ability to have my brain cryopreserved so that I can be revived in the distant future and thus beat death.

Obama said global warming is the biggest worry in the world...I suppose an Obama third term is second.
Look in your rear view mirror; the climate police are coming!
Climate change (global warming) regulators are stoking up the public’s fears more and more in order to fleece them by costly regulations on carbon. Obama’s new energy plan, according to cnsnews.com, could cost $2,500,000,000,000 in lost economic growth alone.
This is coupled with a gag order on scientists who refute global warming.
The reach into the public’s pocket already has begun in California. This month Californians received a “climate change” notice tucked in with their electricity bill which grants them a credit on their electricity bills “from a California program that is fighting climate change…designed to help you join in these efforts.” The California Public Utilities Commissions notification says “the Climate Credit is one of many programs resulting from landmark legislation called the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006,” and that the bill savings from your Climate Credit can be used as you choose but hopefully for energy upgrades.
California’s cap-and-trade program puts a high price on use of carbon-based fuels and extended it to include transportation fuels on Jan. 1 of this year by raising California’s gas tax by an estimated 10 cents a gallon.
Well, the money for "climate credits" has to come from somewhere.
At the same time, the government itself is being charged with climate manipulation.
Greg Hunter in an interview today with lead researcher Dane Wigington for the global climate engineering informational website, GeoengineeringWatch.org, “says newly discovered U.S. government documents prove global climate manipulation, commonly referred to as chemtrails, is real.”
Geoengineering is the artificial modification of Earths climate systems through two primary ideologies, Solar Radiation Management (SRM) and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR).

Government Implements Illegal “Gag Order” On National Weather Service And NOAA Employees
October 21, 2015 240 Comments
Dane Wigington
geoengineeringwatch.org
“The power structure is beginning to panic as the public wakes up to the criminal climate engineering insanity. The growing police state is completely out of control and becoming unimaginably blatant with their actions. In recent weeks Washington has placed ‘gag orders’ on the following agency employees, ‘The National Weather Service’, the ‘National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’, and the ‘US Department of Commerce"’. This is a massive red flag that should trigger alarm bells everywhere…
“Some time ago I personally spoke to an NOAA scientist that said ‘we all know it is going on (climate engineering) but we are afraid to speak out, we have no first amendment protection’. The new ‘gag order’ is a further muzzling of the NWS and NOAA. It is likely there are many in the National Weather Service and NOAA that have had enough of lying about what is really going on in our skies.”

Where's all the farmer's interviews saying: "these guys with funny hats and sunglasses said they wanted to purchase 999,000 tonnes of straw, preferably barley straw, 12 times per year so we were like yeah $30/bale, $40 if you want it delivered to the airstrip"???
ooh-emm-gee!
Residua of toxic material which is too costly to dispose of being sprayed onto our heads? Honestly, I feel like a sitting duck. The man Greg Hunter interviewed yesterday has more information that is quite disturbing (politician who wanted to bring weather modification topic to an interview killed, found in landfill shortly thereafter).
If anyone has children/relatives in military, it is time we sit down and tell them "it is us or them" (false confidence, chest pounding members of the military world will take notice if their family is going to take matters into their own hands, and refuse to accept their involvement in an apparent form of terrorism which takes "time" to show results....Killing us slowly.
Dane Wigington versus all the scientists behind the 30,000+ published science papers that AR5 was based on? A typical science paper will have way more than one author so he'd be calling out about 100,000 scientists, and every national science academy on earth. Dane personally talked to a guy so there it is folks? "Global climate engineering info site" and you fall all over yourselves to bleat his blah blah blah? EMBARRASSING. You saw it on USAwatchdog.com?
There are international treaties against these types of geoengineering activities. Do you have any evidence of any international objections to ongoing activities of this nature? Are you suggesting that the RoW would allow this to happen on a global scale and remain silent?
The type of policy you see in California is also being enacted in other sub-national jurisdictions. Ontario and Quebec have linked their policy with California. In Paris you will begin to see national policy created along the same lines. Brace yourself. Failure to get on board in Paris will have far more significant consequences than not signing Kyoto.

The sudden appearance of Ronald McDonald!!!
Panphobia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panphobia
"Panphobia, omniphobia, pantophobia, or panophobia is a vague and persistent dread of some 'unknown' evil."
Anxiety is very different than fear.
Anxiety is worry about something that might happen. Often it is tire spinning over something you cannot control anyway.
Fear happens when you are inside the event. You fight, flee, or freeze. A lot of that has to do with biology. You never know what you will really do when you are in the shit. You can train your biology a little bit, but your amygdala, not your frontal lobe is in control on this one.
This is an anxiety survey, not a fear survey.
Where is gun grabbing on that list?
Oh now I see it under corrupt government.
I'm afraid of worrying about the wrong thing.
No asteroid or Planet X strikes? Baaaahhhh, this can't be a real study of real Americans, after all, we all know that it is all going to end in March, 2016.....then again, like that definite rate hike, the destruction of humanity is always subject to change.
i fear runnning out of fat people that can be rendered into diesel fuel after the collapse
I fear I don't understand what the fuck is going on well enough to know if I should just kiss my ass goodbye or fucking go into full regard prep or what.
The rich stay rich by stealing from the...middle class at this juncture. The poor are on the dole (Stockholm syndrome).
Why isn't "Super Mario" on the list? I mean... he's kinda scary. Little guy in coveralls romping all over your computer screen... who knows what he's changed when you weren't looking? Like you go to the bathroom and come back to an empty bank account and dinosaurs trashing your tax forms and books!
And... what if the little freak figured out how to get OFF the screen? Wow! We could be in real trouble! And that gorilla that is in the same program... what if he and Mario got together and decided to take over the UN and impose "Universal Peace" on the world and the "peace keepers" didn't wear condoms! Wooo.. now THAT's scary!
SuperMario isn't on that list because EuroGirl bombards him with confetti. that makes him hard to be taken seriously as a pet fear
The question is more what kind of relation EuroGirl and the gorilla have, and what that means for EuroGirl's plans about Universal Peace, with or without the UN
note in this that EuroGirl and Miss America have both peace in their mind
You wanta know what I fear the most?
