Turkish F-16s Shoot Down Russian Su-24 Warplane Near Syria Border

Tyler Durden's picture

Moments ago a big black geopolitical swan landed when newswires lit up with headlines that a Turkish F-16 shot down what was initially said to be an unidentified warplane near the Syrian border after it violated Turkey's airspace on Tuesday, a Turkish military official said, but the nationality of the downed aircraft was not immediately clear.

The Russian jet crashed in the mountainous Jabal Turkmen area of Latakia, where air strikes and fighting between rebels and Syrian government forces were reported earlier on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, Turkish F16s warned the jet repeatedly over the airspace violations before shooting it down.

A Russian Su024 aircraft goes down in Kizildag region of Turkey's
Hatay province, close to the Syrian border, on November 24, 2015

Footage from private broadcaster Haberturk TV showed a warplane going down in flames in a woodland area, a long plume of smoke trailing behind it. The plane went down in area known by Turks as "Turkmen Mountain" in northern Syria near the Turkish border, Haberturk said.

Minutes later, the Turkish Lira sank like a rock while risk assets across Europe tumbled when the Turkish presidency confirmed that, as many had expected, the jet was a Russian fighter jet, which the Russian Defense Ministry later said was a Su-24. The Su-24 jet was warned after violating Turkish airspace and was then downed in line with Turkey’s rules of engagement, Anadolu says, citing officials at the presidency.

According to Todays' Szaman, in a statement, the Turkish military said a plane of unknown origin was shot down after it violated the Turkish airspace despite repeated warnings. The aircraft was warned 10 times in 5 minutes, the military said.

It said two Turkish F-16s were involved in the shooting down of the jet.

However, while moments ago the Russian defense ministry confirmed that the shot down plane was indeed one of its own in what will be deemed a clear act of aggression by a NATO-member country against Russia, the Russian defense ministry said it could prove the aircraft was over Syria for the entire flight.

The ministry added that the pilots ejected, according to preliminary info, and that Russia trying to determine their fates, Interfax reports.  Interfax also adds that the plane was probably downed by fire from ground, and that it had been flying at flying at an altitude of 6,000 meters.

Meanwhile, Turkish media reported that either one or both of the pilots may have been captured by Turkmen forces located in the region.

  • TURKMEN FORCES CAPTURE 2 PILOTS OF DOWNED RUSSIAN JET: AHABER

Although there is confusion whether both or just one pilot was captured

  • SYRIA TURKMEN FORCES SAY 1 PILOT OF DOWNED PLANE CAPTURED: AA

Especially with a YouTube video spread showing what is alleged to be one of the pilots dead

More:

A CNN Türk reporter in Yaylada? said a helicopter was hovering over the scene of the crash, apparently to pick up the pilots, but that opposition fighters were preventing it. The reporter later said one of the pilots was at the hands of Turkmen opposition fighters.

Prime Minister Davuto?lu has been briefed by the General Staff and ordered the Turkish Foreign Ministry to contact NATO, UN and relevant countries about the downed plane.

This huge escalation in the Syrian proxy war, one where a NATO country has openly attacked a non-NATO country (if Russia is correct and it did not violate Turkish airspace), comes after Turkey called this week for a U.N. Security Council meeting to discuss attacks on Turkmens in neighboring Syria, and last week Ankara summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the bombing of their villages.

Ankara has traditionally expressed solidarity with Syrian Turkmens, who are Syrians of Turkish descent.

We await a formal reaction by Russia, one which we doubt will be calm, cool and collected and may in fact see the Turkish aggression as an act of war if indeed the Russian Su never entered Turkish territory.

Here is the official statement by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov via Sputnik:

"So far, we have not heard the reason for the crash of our attack aircraft from the Defense Ministry. We know for sure that the aircraft was in Syrian airspace, over the territory of Syria," Peskov said, noting that the ministry's first statement on the crash was based on preliminary information.

"It would be wrong to make some kind of assumptions right now, to make any statements until we have the complete picture. Therefore, we just have to be patient. This is a very serious incident, but again, it is impossible to say anything without complete information," he added.

"It can be assumed that the president… will touch upon this issue during the talk with the king, and that there will be some kind of a reaction," Peskov told reporters when asked whether Putin would make a statement on the matter.

Elsewhere, the Turkish army released what it claims is a radar path analysis of the downed jet's flight path:

At first blush it is not clear how the airspace violating jet could have received "10 warnings" in the several seconds it took to cross what the Turks claim was the offending Turkish territory, especially since the plane ultimately crashed in Syrian territory.

Updates to follow.

Now Yellen can blame the economic implosion on the start of WWIII and the controlled collapse can begin in earnest.

Is this the "event" we have all forseen? Yellen can also blame lack of lift off in interest rates on this.

Convenient Huh?

The initial BBC spin (John Humphries / Today Radio 4) is that the Russian assertion that their Jet was in Syrian airspace is a desperate ploy to difuse the situation !!!

The inference being that the naughty Russians are now in big trouble for violating Turkish airspace and got what was coming.

I immagine a few Nato Jets will find they get locked up by some of Russias finest SAM systems in fairly short order. Serious escalation by any measure, but 100% predicted by many.

In the garbage bin. That is an illegally imposed no fly zone after a Turkish plane violated Syrian airspace and was subsequently shot down (great piece of information by Kiwi).

Bloomberg said the area of Syria in which the plane was shot down and into which the pilots would have parachuted is presently occupied by ethnic Turks/Turkmen.

There are ethnic Turks in northern Syria, from the days of the Ottoman empire. So it seems the pilots fell into their hands, doesn't mean the plane was shot down over Turkey as the MSM wants to spin it right now, nor that they are IS savages. The most likely case is that they will be handed over to the Turkish Army so that Turkey can say 'see the pilots fell over Turkish territory'.

But why would Russia send a helicopter to save them if they had any reasons to believe they landed in Turkey...

Heres the problem, in 2012 Turkey (with US support) 'moved its border' 5 miles into Syrian airspace after Syria shot down a Turkish plane that entered into Syrian airspace. Turkey then deemed any aircraft coming within 5 miles of its border while still inside SYRIAN airspace to be hostile and would deal with it accordingly.

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 06:25 | 6830774 Kiwi Preacher
Kiwi Preacher's picture

Very true, but in the end I don't know that either side and their supporters are really going to care where the Russian Jet was. If Russia can show the jet was in Syrian airspace do you think anyone (media/Western Governments) is going to believe them. No-one is interested in evidence anymore, partly because so many people only read the sensationalist (and often misleading) headlines rather than the actual reports the media put out. The minds of the masses are manipulated to accept the narrative the governments want people to believe, you can see this in action on comments boards where people talk about Assad gassing his people in Ghouta despite the fact that has been proven it wasnt him.

The US has been looking for an edge to put the pressure on Russia over Syria. In the last few weeks we have a French Carrier group sailing to the Mediterranian of the coast of Syria. At the same time the US is sending a carrier group to join them, now Britain is offering to open its bases in Cyprus and join the fight. Then suddenly, and oh so conveniently, Ukranian 'activists' sabotage the power supply to the Crimea sending over a million Russian citizens into the dark, the Crimea of course being the warm water base for the Russian Navy. Not to forget the claims of increasing violence in the Ukraine between the rebels and the Ukraine armed forces. I would not be surprised if we see a lighting strike by the Ukrainians soon to retake their Eastern states before winter sets in, especially with Russia suddenly distracted with the Syrian conflict.

God help us if Turkey is insane enough to close the Bosphorus Strait to Russian shipping.....

Very true, but does it matter when the media will be filled with cries of Russia violating 'Turkish airspace' regardless of the facts. I honestly don't see any NATO nations willing to contest Turkeys claim (in self defence of course....)

In the end all that really matters is how will Russia respond....

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 06:44 | 6830817 schatzi
schatzi's picture

Sure it depends on Russia's response, but this is also how the story can be sold publicly and this is where it becomes difficult. Selling it as a violation of airspace becomes unbelievable when the plane crashes in Syria. The public in general is fairly ignorant and can be manipulated, but some facts (such as the crash site) make it exeedingly difficult to do so. Turkey is becoming extremely problematic with Erdogan. The US knows it, Europe knows it and the public is catching on. Turkey with Erdogan is becoming a massive political liability to the West. Russia has probably the most appetite for war considering the domestic support Putin has for himself and his militaristic responses in general. Turkey less so and the West has zero appetite. So yes, Russia's response short to mid-term will be interesting - to put it mildly.

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 07:28 | 6830944 Kiwi Preacher
Kiwi Preacher's picture

I agree completely, but I suspect the US will be happy to put the whole Turkish problem on the back burner as long as they can seek to use this event to further their efforts to remove Assad and take defacto control of Syria for their pipelines to Europe from the Qatar. Thus far Russia has out manouvered them on every front from the Ukraine to Syria, not without great cost to themselves mind but Russia has little choice other than to back down and accept being another vassal state under US dominance. But, Putin is no idiot. Hes pulled a few rabbits out of the hat thus far, I wouldnt be surprised if he does it again.

^ This. The Russians only have to move some of their newer anti-air systems into Syria and any foreign aircraft flying over Syria without the express authorisation of the Syrian government potentially gets vaporised.

Did Turkey just hand over control of Syrian airspace to Russia?

So, were the Russians aware of Turkeys new 5 mile zone and how they would react?

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 08:29 | 6831091 BlindMonkey
BlindMonkey's picture

I would script the next play something like this:

1. Condemnation of the attack outside of Turkish airspace along with demands that NATO recognize this was not an attack on a NATO member and not subject to Art 5.

2. A new Russian airbase in Iran/Iraq

3. Ground attack by Shiite groups from Iraq/Iran supported by Russian air.

4. If the Turks keep the pressure on, a recognition of a Kurd territory in Syria and subsequent lighting up of the Turk/Kurd conflict.

I am probably too reckless and quick to go to for the big response though.  I do have faith in the Russian foreign policy team.  They have done a damn good job up to now countering Western agression with the minimum cost in military, treasure and political capital up to this point.

edit:  There will be a full de-pantsing of Turkish support of ISIS as part of step 1.  I think Russia will lay bare how ISIS oil is moved into the market.

I wrote this elsewhere, but if I am in command Turkey right now is losing at least one of their air force bases..St least one. If I know which one they flew out of then that is the one.
Step 2 is I establish a no fly zone 20 miles into Turkey.
NATO itself established that precedent in other conflicts.

I pray that you are correct...although it is not ZH that is banging the war drums. Some of the commenters may be...

They are just reporting it.

A Nuclear Winter just does not sound that appealing of a way to die

Nuclear Wars are not winnable.

Check out Carl Sagan's studies. Check out the modeling.

Even the former Soviet Union scientists agreed.,..and modeled it independently and came up with similar results.

Dr. Strangelove may not have been accurate that the Soviets had a Doomsday Device...But Nuclear War is an Extinction Level Event.

I cannot believe that as many people here are supporting any of this.

We are fucking all dead men if these psychopathic oligarchs decide to engage in a Nuclear War.

They have way too much power on their hands and are fucking IGNORANT AS HELL to desire any of this.

They believe that a Nuclear War is survivable and winnable.

They also lack the understanding of the mindset of the psychopathic oligarchs leading their respective nations.

Ever read that Aesop Fable, "The Dog and the Manger"?

The Dog was so angered that the master had neglected to feed him that he viciously defended a manger full of grain to prevent the farm animals from eating it.

Although he could not eat the grain he defended it none the less.

"If I am going to go without then so shall everyone else" was his attitude.

The psychopathic oligarchs have the same attitude. If they cannot control Syria then nobody else will beable to and they will make damned certain of that.

They think in terms of Nationalism and Nation States when it is readily apparent that Corporatism is a much better model for describing the reality.

They are just too blind to it, rooting for their respective teams.

And it will ultimately kill us all as the CEOs lack the knowledge and wisdom to understand the destructive potential which is now on the precipice of being released.

No. By no means am I "Rootin' for Putin" or chanting "USA, USA, USA" at the top of my lungs. Not me.

War is a Racket and the oligarchs are seeking to profit off of this bloodshed.

The imminent threat is that the Nation States do have Nuclear Arsenals and there has been a change of attitude with respect to Nuclear War. Some actually believe them to be survivable.

They will say and think, "Oh we will limit it". Well there will be no limits. They are deluding themselves. It will escalate.

And by the time that they figure it out that it is not winnable the damage will be done, it will be too late, and we will all be dead or dying.

And we actually deserve that  extinction because we are so danned fucked up and flawed.

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 08:28 | 6831115 general ambivalent
general ambivalent's picture

To the contrary, I don't see anyone cheering on nuclear war. Some may be saying, 'get it over with.' But that is simply because the world is already MAD. How many more Fukushimas, Iraqs, and Colorado Rivers can humans survive?

We're already in a nuclear winter, just a slowly unfolding one - and a case could be made that the current course is even less survivable and winnable than direct nuclear war. With a nuclear war there would at least be a chance that the nukes, militaries, and agencies are wiped out first. On the current course it is just a slow train wreck of taking over the last useful resources and annihilating the last strongholds of human thought.

That's not hoping for it to happen, it's just recognition of how truly hopeless and insane the current situation is. The dog is a bad example, people should have learned from that dog long ago. Chewing along with a stupid grin is how most people react, not caring that eventually their resources will be stolen as well. You have confused the dog with the master, and complacency with innocence.
