Putin Accuses Obama Of Leaking Flight Details To Turkey After Russia Releases Video Of S-400 SAM Deployment In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

As reported two days ago, one of the first decisions a very angry Russia took in the aftermath of the shooting down of its Su-24 by a Turkish F-16 was to dispatch a Moskva guided-missile cruiser off the coast of Syria to provide air cover for its jets operating near Latakia, as well as send an unknown number of ultramodern S-400 (or SA-21 Growler in NATO designation) SAM batteries to Latakia to make sure that the tragic incident from Tuesday never repeats itself by sending Turkey a very clear message that the next time a Turkish warplane engages a Russian jet, Russia will immediate retaliate using ground forces.

Earlier today, Russia made a very explicit demonstration of the deployment of at least two S-400 batteries at Syria's Khmeimim airbase, with the Russian Ministry of Defense promptly publicizing the arrival with the following clip.

With a range of 250 miles, the S-400 could easily strike Turkish targets, and as the map below shows, Russia could even take down targets over northern Israel. As cited by the Independent, Nick de Larrinaga, Europe editor of the defense magazine IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly, said it would be “a significant increase” in the reach of Russian air-defense capacities. “The message that the Russians are trying to send is that they’re capable of defending themselves in Syria, should the situation escalate."

Needless to say, the US was not enthused and earlier today the US embassy in Moscow said that the "Russian deployment of the S-400 air-defense system to Syria won't aid the fight against the Islamic State, with the US diplomat adding that the US is hopeful Russia won’t use the system to target planes flown by international coalition since Islamic State doesn’t have air force." Clearly a warning to Putin not to dare use the rockets against Turkish (or other coalition) jets.

So what is Putin's intention by escalating the military deployment of Russian weapons in Syria? Conveniently he explained his thinking just a few hours ago during his press conference with Francois Hollande. In answering a question by a reporter from French Le Monde, Putin said the following:

"The S-400 is an air defense system. The reason we didn't have the system in Syria is because we thought our planes were flying at high enough altitudes where a terrorist could not reach them; they don't have weapons capable of downing our planes at the altitude of over 3 or 4 thousand meters. And We could never think that we could be stabbed in the back by a country we regarded as our ally. Our planes operated at altitudes of 5-6,000 meters and were completely unprotected against potential attacks from fighter jets - we could never imagine that that could be possible otherwise we would deploy such systems in the area protecting our bombers  against possible attacks."

...

"We never did it because we regarded Turkey as our friend, we never expected an attack from that side. This is why we regard this attack as that of a traitor. But now we that this is possible, and we have to protect our planes. This is why we deployed a modern system, the S-400, it has a pretty long range and it's one of the most effective systems of this kind in the world. We will not stop there: if we have to we will also deploy our fighter jets in the area."

Bottom line: another direct engagement by a Turkish fighter will be its last, and in fact now that Russia is prepared we would not be at all surprised to see Russia cross into Turkish airspace on purpose just to provoke Erdogan to repeat the events from last week, only this time with the Russian ready and prepared to retaliate to any engagement. In fact, the odds of Russia doing just that in the next few days are especially high.

But while the reason behind the S-400 deployment was largely known to most, where Putin's press conference took an unexpected detour was what he said just around 20:30 in, when in not so many words, Putin effectively accused the US of leaking the coordinates of the Russian plane to Turkey, which was merely a hitman acting with the blessing of the Pentagon.

This is what Putin said:

"We told our US partners in advance where, when at what altitudes our pilots were going to operate. The US-led coalition, which includes Turkey, was aware of the time and place where our planes would operate. And this is exactly where and when we were attacked. Why did we share this information with the Americans? Either they don't control their allies, or they just pass this information left and right without realizing what the consequences of such actions might be. We will have to have a serious talk with our US partners.

In other words, just like in the tragic bombing of the Kunduz hospital by US forces (which has now been attributed to human error), so this time the target was a Russian plane which the US knew about well in advance, was targeted however not by the US itself, but by a NATO and US-alliance member, Turkey.

And while the deployment of the Russian SAM missiles was already known, the real message from today's presser, the one that will be the topic of a private and "serious talk with Russia's US partners", is that Putin indirectly blames Obama for what happened on Tuesday realizing that Erdogan was merely the "executor", one who is simply motivated to protect his (and his son's) Islamic State oil routes.

Full press conference below; the discussion of Russia's S-400 deployment begins 17:30 in:

"But, did Syria invite France in to do so?" well, yes

not directly. through Russia. That's the whole point of the meeting Hollande had with Putin

when it comes to the Islamic State in Syria, there is now a Franco-Russian alliance against it, assisted by Germany

I guess it will take some time for this to get on most people's radar, then it's two NATO countries fighting with Russia

the most interesting part is from where the German Tornados will make their sorties

Again, doesn't it seem plausible that there would be such weapons?  The U.S. and Russia (and their "helpers") have had decades to place such weapons.  Just because istthetiming is getting some things wrong, that still seems like a probable scenario.

Very unlikely, and if you can't puzzle that out for yourself, there's really no point explaining it to you.

That's just a cheap and lazy answer, ebear.  Why don't you explain why that isn't plausible?  I'm serious.  I have the usual advanced degree; I know how to read and reason, and I don't see why one country couldn't plant a nuke in another country; it would be the easiest thing.  Each side has had decades to do it.  I know plenty of "educated" people who think that this has been done.  So don't be lazy; tell me why it is not plausible.

Fri, 11/27/2015 - 05:39 | 6844962 ebear
ebear's picture

Wow, quickest response I ever got! Thanks!

I have no advanced degree in anything, but I do know this:

Nuclear weapons and their control systems need to be maintained. You can't just place them somewhere and expect them to work 20 years later. Additionally, they would be easy to detect since, besides their radioactive signature, they'd have to be placed where they could do maximum damage, which confines the search area for anyone looking, and I'm pretty sure that search has been done by now.

Then there's the problem created if your nukes are discovered and their ownership established (not hard to do from an analysis of the materials involved). What do you think the outcome of that would be for the offending nation once the weapon(s) had been disarmed?

Of course this assumes that the nukes are secret and not known to their victims, in which case, how do you blackmail them without informing them of their existence?

Catch 22

I will grant you that it's not impossible, but then I didn't say that. Just that it's very unlikely.

Now, tell me you couldn't arrive at those same conclusions without an advanced degree, and I'll tell you what I really think.

Fri, 11/27/2015 - 05:42 | 6844968 Max UK
Max UK's picture

You don't actually even need to plant a nuke; you just need to convince the right people that it is there.

But I doubt that such maneuvers are necessary when you already control the body politik by other means.

I agree with you on the blackmail, though the means are technicalities.

European nations are vassals to the USA, all of them. Individual officials and politicians who resist this, face increasing pressure till the penny drops. Opposition leaders are read the riot act once they get into power.

The only Euro leader that has shown any spine this past decade, has been Viktor Orban, the Hungarian Prez who does not want his country to participate in the immigrant fest.

The lack of action by Dems on Obama's wars is as disappointing as the lack of alarm bells and action by Republicans when Bush was setting the table for Obama and all other Shadow Government C.O.G. puppet regimes here in the US. Really everyone in the US with their ridiculous partisanship has some measure of blame unless you've consistently actively been against the wars and the stripping of economic and civil liberties the past 14+ years (and really we should still be upset about the Coup of 1913, 1963 and the 1971 gold window closing).

I know Assad ain't no Baptist preacher, but he's Ba'ath Party. (So was Saddam Hussein) So the surrounding countries don't really like them/him. Why? I think for the most part Assad's followers are moderate and secular Muslims of the Islamist faith. Why is this important? Why is a secular Islamist sect in charge of a country up to no good because they squash extremist Islamic beliefs? Seems to me that a person who wants to control a country without the extremes of the faith, has something going for him. Bringing a country into the 21st century with freedom of religion under certain circumstances, which is pretty difficult in the ME, might probably be a good idea. Now the question is, what did he do so horribly wrong that any other sovereign nation would'nt do to maintain order for the general populace of that country? Yep! This had the stink of a U.S.-initiated op all over it from start to finish.

Turkey was assured that Russia would not retaliate militarily because Turkey is NATO.

But Russia is retaliating - in a very smart and effective way, broad-based and including military options that are drawing a red line by Putin - and we all know that Putin's red lines are not to be crossed, and if you do it, you will pay dearly.

So yet again the U.S. is throwing another of its allies under the bus.

I'm waiting to see Russia provoke Turkey and the U.S. like a man walking along the fence line where there's a mad dog, and the man has his back pockets stuffed with sausages....

Putin is no damn coward or pussy - he's got kahunas the size of bowling balls - if the U.S. and Turkey thought they could discourage Putin into quitting Syria, by escalating his costs, they sure as hell don't know the Russian psyche!

To Joe Tierney:

"So yet again the U.S. is throwing another of its allies under the bus."

You read it all wrong; they will never, ever throw Turkey under the bus; Turkey is too valuable to NATO.

What was achieved on 23rd Nov 2015, was the destruction of Russo-Turkic relations. In a way, this was a smart move by the disgusting reptilian neocons.

The cost to said disgusting reptilian neocons, is that Turkey and NATO are now outed as being the unofficial air force of ISIS, and also, Putin now has a mandate to arm Syria to the teeth with Russian hardware and personnel.

The destruction of Turkey.....this is like 1916 again. Turkey will break up. The Kurds will get their state and Erdogan, who is not really Turkish but Georgian, will see the splitting up of the Kemalist state just as he destroyed its secular heritage. Turkey was the Sick Man of Europe in the 1800s and its decay is the real reason for WW1. Every component part of the Ottoman Empire was rotten - and now Turkey and Saudi are competing to see who can rebuild a Sunni Caliphate and the Anglo-Americans are their mercenaries

I think the US Coalition, or Turkey "boy" in this case, should, in fact test the water over the next few days. I then think that the Russian forces should do what they have to do, as strike three means you're out. You know it's one thing for Russia to get involved to maintain Sryian sovereignty, and fight ISIS and anyone else opposed, but for the US to lapdog Turkey, as bad as they are as a NATO member, to do this, as a test to see where Putin will go, well, I think they slapped the wrong bear. Russia will use those. Don't even take bet on it. They are not very amennable to being lied to when supposedly being supported for their efforts. They learned a lot in Afganistan. And they're not there now. This is real shit folks. They growed up real good.

In reality, our gangsters are pushing the envelope of another gangster. Get the point. Collatoral damage is just the way it goes.

The United States led by Obama had an historic opportunity to enter an alliance with The Russian Federation to combat radical Islam. The Obama administration instead decided to ally itself with the likes of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. Future historians will cite that lost opportunity as one of the largest amongst the Obama administration's many failings. Why the United States is allied with the countries directly inciting radical Islam instead of with the Christian Russian Federation fighting radical Islam is beyond me. It must be because President Obama is a Muslim himself and prefers aiding radical Islam efforts to destroy the remaining Christian presence in the Middle East and North Africa and spreading death and destruction to the Christain West.

Ok, a few things:

1. Obama's daddy was British Kenyan, which makes him ineligible for the presidency,

2. Obama was, and still is, an Indonesian citizen, which makes him ineligible for the presidency,

3. Obama, as a male indonesian who attended an Indonesian school, is a muslim.

Knowing all of the above, does your statement make any sense?

Your statement:

"The United States led by Obama had an historic opportunity to enter an alliance with The Russian Federation to combat radical Islam"  is factually incorrect.

The US created 'radical Islam' to fight the Soviets (Russians).

A more acccurate restatment:'

"The United States led by Obama had an historic opportunity to fool the Russian Federation into supporting radical Islam.  But Putin and the Russians didn't fall for it.

Putin's side of the story makes perfect sense as well as having facts on his side, athough, he had to have known that this would be a possibility.

I seem to remember that the US didn't want to divulge areas where they didn't want Putin to strike... why?  Because they know exactly how they would use that information if they were in his shoes.

Psychopaths tend to use human empathy or even honor etc., against others, this is a huge advantage.  Putin at some point will have to make some very hard decisions and you can bet your ass they will make sure that he has to.

Nuclear blast dome that anyone can make anywhere in the world, for peanuts and over a couple of days, (depending on size).

A low flat windowless dome much like an igloo made from packed earth. Domes are inherently strong structures and will survive when straight lines have been blown away.

You pack clay containing earth into sand bags and tamp them down in place to a brick like state. The walls have to be 3 feet thick or more. If you live in a damp/wet climate or have sandy earth then mix cement into the earth before packing into the bags. You keep sand bags inside the dome to seal the entrance after you enter. leave only a small gap for air.

Won't survive a direct hit but then, bugger all will. Better to be underground of course but that's quite a bit more expense and work and it will still not survive a direct hit.

Cost: Some plastic sand bags and dirt. Maybe cement.

e.g. google "earthbag domes". The construction method is identical but you're looking to build something lower with 3 foot thick walls, no windows and with only a crawl space as a door.

I think Putin is playing the classic strategy of dropping a few kernels of corn on the ground in the to draw the hogs into the trap.  The US was just played by Putin.  He is showing the Chinese and other watchful countries how deceitful and untrustworthy the US is, thus attracting to his side countries sitting on the fence.  In addition, the actions of the US and Turkey have given Putin justification for closing the Syrian Turkish border and now closing the Syrian skies to Turkish jets.  The Russians are seen to be the ally of the Kurds more than the US is now, since the US has been unwilling to reign in Ergodan's bombing of Syrian and Iraqi Kurdish forces.

"Is this what the American people really want?"

50% of the American people are on welfare and could care less or have not a clue what their (deep state) leaders, the oligarchs are up to. They have no idea that there are oligarchs. 40% are busy working to support themselves and also pay to support the 50% who do not work. They're tired and when home try to spend time raising kids, fixing meals and/or relaxing watching NFL,  Kim K's butt or listening to CNN, Faux or other propaganda media. 10% are acutely aware of world events but are split in their assessment of what is happening. 5% believe Russia is bad, Assad is bad, Iran is bad and China is bad. The remaining 5% may have a better understanding but most of these  have not figured out how to overcome the massive control, media, politics, education, military and police that control the US. The American people want their comforts, free stuff, freedom from thinking and prime TV channels, other wise they don't give a rip.

In the press conference between Putin and Hollande Puting said that all russian turism to Turkia will be stopped as well as trade and energy deals. According to Putin Russia has already issued a warning to it’s people not to travel to Tyrkia , as they might pose a threat to Russian people.

An average of 4.5 million russian people travels to Turkia as tourists every year. They leave behind about 10 billion dollars every year. Tyrkia is furthermore the second largest Russian gass customer (after germany). Then there is ‘Turksteam’ , an oil and gass tube line that is planned being built from central asia, through Tyrkia, that last one alone is estimated to cost about 20 billion dollars. Everything can be stopped.

Off course some of these sanctions would hurt Russia too, but not doing it would probably cause even more damage. The world is in desperate need for a capable and strong leader like Putin , otherwise  the entire western civilization is going to disappear. Europe is already dying and Obama has already joined the new world order.    We have not much time.

Actually I think the US is paying a double game using Turkey as the rube; the intent is to establish an independent Kuridstan. By "helping" the animosity between Russia and Turkey, Russia can logically increase support to the Kurds (and Turkey's mortal enemy the PKK) and the US would like this to happen while not being seen as being directly involved. The US hopes to establish another military foothold in this new Kurdistan; it may not work out so well for the US as it would for the Russians.  Turkey got the nod to attack and now getting tire tracks up and down its back with the extra-wide set coming!

This S-400 deployment will have a glorious and brief life, and it will be the last SAM system Russia will deploy in Theatre.  The Russians simply do not have the quantity of systems to make a strategic difference.

The Russians are famous for making weapons that can be mass produced and that are rugged and durable.  I believe the S-400 is one of them.  Don't judge Russian weapons by the crap that the US and it's allies buy.   MOst of the cost for US weapons goes into kickbacks, bribes, ..etc.   The US has never planned to fight Russia, only proxy armies using Russian equipment.  The Russians can walk over the US Army; the US army requires air superiority to operate and the Russians can deny them that with the S-400. That's not to say the US doesn't have brave soldiers; they do.  But it won't be a contest.   A few thousand scraggily supplied East Ukrainians using Russian defensive  weapons that were second hand, from the Ukrainian armory, defeated the Ukrainian army last year.

Russian weapons are primarilly built for a defensive effort, defending the homeland, so they don't need as many as a global empire like the US does.  But where the weapons are deployed, they will be more than enough to fend off any aggressors.  The concept of 'strategic' to the US is global in nature, whilst that of Russia is directed at homeland plus the near abroad.

The US should be worried more about its own ability to withsatnd a war with Russia.  I am certain that US Generals have no doubt that they do not have the land support capability to beat the Russians on their home turf, and they also know that if all-out war were to be triggereed, their carrier fleets would be sunk within the first hour of combat, leaving them struggling to manage any sort of offense.

Bottom line - Don't fuck with Russia.

Putin and obuma and EU leadership will be in Paris for the AGW confab..

there putin will stifle laughing in the face of western "leaders" who say

global climate is their biggest worry..this sick silly meeting will give Putin the

courage to move against leadership which is so obviously corrupt and blind

to real world issues. the upcoming meeting should be a real laugher.

Plus the US populace is in no mood to go to war for Israel.  A draft would result in a revolution because the 911 crap has worn thin and most intelligent Americans know or suspect that 911 was an inside job.   911 is no Pearl Harbor.  A quarter of Americans are foreign born or illegal, half are on welfare, the majority of men are out of shape or too heavy to carry much equipment, and the women are more interested in Black Friday.   The Russians are prepared (even looking forward) to defending mother Russia.

AT least the US of the late 1930's was growing an income for the middle class which was out of debt due to the earlier bankruptcies of the early 1930's.  Unions were strong and patriotisim was strong as well.   Now Americans are hooked into Social Media, which, should a call for a draft commence, will become become a huge conduit of information regarding 911 Truth movement and education to the masses about the ZioNazism that did 911.  Any war with Russia will last a few days before America surrenders.  I'm not talking about nukes; but America is a toothless tiger.  The country has been hijacked by the banksters and every one knows that because of the transfer of bad bank debt onto the taxpapery in 2008-9 (Obama's first act and the reason why the Banksters gave him double in contributions what they gave to McCaine).

A call to arms against Russia will result in the end of the ZioNazism, much like the Tsar's car to arms agaisnt the Germans in 1914 led to his eventual dowfall

Alternatively...

Say the Turks are dumb enough to send a posse of 7 fighter jets over the border, and the Russians shoot down every one of them.

What will western MSM say? Will they admit Russian brilliance? Or do they cite just the one plane being downed, to play the Russian aggressor card, and deny any further losses?

Message to Putin; if you shoot down one plane, then shoot them all. West will gag on its own vomit, before it admits to Russian competence.

China: Warships On Route To Syria To Join New Alliance With Russia With The Goal To Bring Down ISIS

No fly zone---I vaguely recalled some presidential candidates or some congressmen or women or, maybe some noble senator demanded that US set up the no fly zone....

Well, funny, Russia never said such funny thing as no fly zone----by putting S400 there, everyone who wants to avoid being shut down will have to get clearance from Russia......or at least notified Russia by providing advance fly plan...or risk being shut down.....in Syria's air space....

So, there is indeed a no fly zone in syria as demanded by US VIPs......well, Ironic....has a funny way
