Putin Accuses Obama Of Leaking Flight Details To Turkey After Russia Releases Video Of S-400 SAM Deployment In Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

As reported two days ago, one of the first decisions a very angry Russia took in the aftermath of the shooting down of its Su-24 by a Turkish F-16 was to dispatch a Moskva guided-missile cruiser off the coast of Syria to provide air cover for its jets operating near Latakia, as well as send an unknown number of ultramodern S-400 (or SA-21 Growler in NATO designation) SAM batteries to Latakia to make sure that the tragic incident from Tuesday never repeats itself by sending Turkey a very clear message that the next time a Turkish warplane engages a Russian jet, Russia will immediate retaliate using ground forces.

Earlier today, Russia made a very explicit demonstration of the deployment of at least two S-400 batteries at Syria's Khmeimim airbase, with the Russian Ministry of Defense promptly publicizing the arrival with the following clip.

With a range of 250 miles, the S-400 could easily strike Turkish targets, and as the map below shows, Russia could even take down targets over northern Israel. As cited by the Independent, Nick de Larrinaga, Europe editor of the defense magazine IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly, said it would be “a significant increase” in the reach of Russian air-defense capacities. “The message that the Russians are trying to send is that they’re capable of defending themselves in Syria, should the situation escalate."

Needless to say, the US was not enthused and earlier today the US embassy in Moscow said that the "Russian deployment of the S-400 air-defense system to Syria won't aid the fight against the Islamic State, with the US diplomat adding that the US is hopeful Russia won’t use the system to target planes flown by international coalition since Islamic State doesn’t have air force." Clearly a warning to Putin not to dare use the rockets against Turkish (or other coalition) jets.

So what is Putin's intention by escalating the military deployment of Russian weapons in Syria? Conveniently he explained his thinking just a few hours ago during his press conference with Francois Hollande. In answering a question by a reporter from French Le Monde, Putin said the following:

"The S-400 is an air defense system. The reason we didn't have the system in Syria is because we thought our planes were flying at high enough altitudes where a terrorist could not reach them; they don't have weapons capable of downing our planes at the altitude of over 3 or 4 thousand meters. And We could never think that we could be stabbed in the back by a country we regarded as our ally. Our planes operated at altitudes of 5-6,000 meters and were completely unprotected against potential attacks from fighter jets - we could never imagine that that could be possible otherwise we would deploy such systems in the area protecting our bombers  against possible attacks."

...

"We never did it because we regarded Turkey as our friend, we never expected an attack from that side. This is why we regard this attack as that of a traitor. But now we that this is possible, and we have to protect our planes. This is why we deployed a modern system, the S-400, it has a pretty long range and it's one of the most effective systems of this kind in the world. We will not stop there: if we have to we will also deploy our fighter jets in the area."

Bottom line: another direct engagement by a Turkish fighter will be its last, and in fact now that Russia is prepared we would not be at all surprised to see Russia cross into Turkish airspace on purpose just to provoke Erdogan to repeat the events from last week, only this time with the Russian ready and prepared to retaliate to any engagement. In fact, the odds of Russia doing just that in the next few days are especially high.

But while the reason behind the S-400 deployment was largely known to most, where Putin's press conference took an unexpected detour was what he said just around 20:30 in, when in not so many words, Putin effectively accused the US of leaking the coordinates of the Russian plane to Turkey, which was merely a hitman acting with the blessing of the Pentagon.

This is what Putin said:

"We told our US partners in advance where, when at what altitudes our pilots were going to operate. The US-led coalition, which includes Turkey, was aware of the time and place where our planes would operate. And this is exactly where and when we were attacked. Why did we share this information with the Americans? Either they don't control their allies, or they just pass this information left and right without realizing what the consequences of such actions might be. We will have to have a serious talk with our US partners.

In other words, just like in the tragic bombing of the Kunduz hospital by US forces (which has now been attributed to human error), so this time the target was a Russian plane which the US knew about well in advance, was targeted however not by the US itself, but by a NATO and US-alliance member, Turkey.

And while the deployment of the Russian SAM missiles was already known, the real message from today's presser, the one that will be the topic of a private and "serious talk with Russia's US partners", is that Putin indirectly blames Obama for what happened on Tuesday realizing that Erdogan was merely the "executor", one who is simply motivated to protect his (and his son's) Islamic State oil routes.

Full press conference below; the discussion of Russia's S-400 deployment begins 17:30 in:

10 megatons?  The largest bomb (the Tsar Bomba) that the Russians have tested was estimated at 57 megatons.  It leaves a hole a mile wide and 400 feet deep.  The fireball alone would cover all of Manhattan end-to-end, and the death zone is 20 miles in any direction.

Of course, they only have a few of those, but they don't need many.  Actually, they only need 8: Washington, New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv.

As for their piddling 6000 to 7000 10-megation inventory, they can be invested in every city in the US that has a population over 25000.

And it will be an investment that pays generous dividends to the rest of the world.

woeldwide the oil glut is a mere 1-2% of world oil production. World consumption is at record highs

If the worlds producers dropped a mere 2% of their production, the remaining 98% of production would get $100 per barrel instead of 100% production at $40 per barrel.

There is no glut. There is no battle for market share.

What's really going on is the western world has decided to bankrupt an aggressive China and Russia and insane Latin America who allllll got fat and power hungry with high revenues. Saudis included.

If the USA has to crash and burn the entire Texas and us oil shale production and bring the USA into recession in order to prevent the rise of these powers then they will do it.

China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela all thought Obama would not have the balls to cut his own balls in order to stop them. But he does.

When these countries are in civil unrest they will need to spend money locally rather than on offensive programs of conquest.

China has 3 trillion in reserves that needs trimming also.

China and Russia are now spending money in the Middle East with no return. Russia has a demographic problem of young people who are not being born enough - and trying to take swaths of Europe. China needs more land and smaller countries around it to become their factories in the future

Won't happen.

The USA is still tactically ahead. If we need young men and women we open the immigration flood gates - no one is going to China and Russia - they are trying to get out! And they are constantly sending their children and money abroad to western countries.

If China and Russia want to win, then they have to change and that's the message.

Live in the USA, Russia or China? What's your pick?

Tough to say but it might be worth losing a few Turk jets to test out the S-400. It might be everything as advertised or it might be crap like the Patriots. And an F-16 costs $30m v $400m for the S-400. That's assuming they clash over Syria - if Rusia shoots down a plane in Turkey that's a declaration of war on NATO.

Putin doesn't actually believe that Turkey has no radars with which to see his planes.

He just needs to invent reasons why everything unpleasant that happens in the world happens because of some mean American lurking in the shadows.

Ultimately the US only cares about Euro access to energy because Europe does, and because the oligarchs who own the Fed are majority European.  Yet that is precisely the issue behind Georgia, Libya, the Ukraine, and Syria.

Interesting then that Putin is NOT laying blame at the source, the Rothschilds, Warburgs, and Euro aristocracy, but at the feet of their flunkies in the US govt  and largely innocent slaves in the general US public.

The shape of Putin's positioning does not bode well for a world out from under the aristocrat's thumbs.

I don't know Putin.

People downvote this post not because I insulted him or misrepresented his political incentives, but because I did not simultaneously shower him with sycophantic serenades.

That is a bad sign all by itself.

You don't avoid alcoholism by drinking a lot and congratulating yourself on your iron will.

You don't avoid drug addiction by doing drugs as a "workout" punctuated by clean periods.

One who exercises great power and encourages syncophantic behavior, if honest, is doing a very foolish thing.

The human mind is made to achieve desires, and of itself knows no good from bad.  The greater the opportunity to achieve illicit desires, the greater one's mind will rationalize a justification.

At this moment I see loads of people who assume Russia act in opposition to the bankers....with nothing to support that view other than hollow words from hollow men.

If you need a cult of personality find your courage then you'll never find better than a collar of a different color.

I don't know Putin, but if I did, I would still need more than the pronouncements of syncophants to convince me that the sky was blue...much less any thing more important.

I am watching and reserving judgement.

US are trying to provoke Russia to use force against Turkey, so to give Turkey a pretext to lock up Russian fleet in the Black Sea by closing bosporus and dardanelles. Turkey can do it only against a country with wich is at war.

Russian military analyst have proposed in such an event to blow /widen the bosporus and dardanelles with a few hydrogen bombs which technically can be done without any lasting environmental impact.

Turkey has taken the path of Ukraine and will end a similar way. The Turkish genocide/murder of 1.5 million of Armenian in 1915 is forgotten by none in that region.

The R-862 model VHF radio installed on the Su-24M is said to requires an optional add-on receiver module in order to receive emergency channel transmissions.

It is very likely NATO  intellegence groups were aware of this fact. If the Su-24M did not have an updated radio, Turkey could prodcast till the cows come home to no effect.

Without planning to give a visual warning, this would be a surprise attack. Since the air space violation lasted only seconds and the Su-24M was actually shot down over Syria.

Russia had carefully established communication protocols with the US to avoid this very thing.

In a good-faith response to an alleged border incursion, the F-16 would have the speed to come alongside the Su-24 and make visual contact, maybe even doing a slight roll to show the air-to-air missiles in extreme.

The incident was not a good-faith response to an alleged incursion. It was a pre-meditated attack with ground forces ready to capture or kill the aircrew.

And here is the full technical story that makes Turkey and Agressor state and a Terrorist state  under UN GA Resolution:

https://www.rt.com/news/323651-turkey-su24-downing-syria/

"The attack on the Russian Su-24 bomber was intentional and had been planned in advance, Viktor Bondarev, the chief of Russia’s Air Force, announced Friday, calling the incident an “unprecedented backstab.”

The commander shared with the media previously unknown details of what happened on Tuesday.

On November 24, a pair of Russian Sukhoi Su-24 tactical bombers took off from Khmeimim airbase in Latakia at 06:15 GMT, with an assignment to carry out airstrikes in the vicinity of the settlements of Kepir, Mortlu and Zahia, all in the north of Syria. Each bomber was carrying four OFAB-250 high-explosive fragmentation bombs.

Ten minutes later, the bombers entered the range of Turkish radars and took positions in the target area, patrolling airspace at predetermined heights of 5,800 meters and 5,650 meters respectively.

Both aircraft remained in the area for 34 minutes. During this time there was no contact between the crews of the Russian bombers and the Turkish military authorities or warplanes.

Some 20 minutes after arriving at the designated area, the crews received the coordinates of groups of terrorists in the region. After making a first run, the bombers performed a maneuver and then delivered a second strike.

Immediately after that, the bomber crewed by Lieutenant-Colonel Oleg Peshkov and Captain Konstantin Murakhtin was attacked by a Turkish F-16 fighter jet operating from the Diyarbak?r airfield in Turkey.

To attack the Russian bomber with a close-range air-to-air missile, the Turkish fighter jet had to enter Syrian airspace, where it remained for about 40 seconds. Having launched its missile from a distance of 5-7 kilometers, the F-16 immediately turned towards the Turkish border, simultaneously dropping its altitude sharply, thus disappearing from the range of Russian radars at the Khmeimim airbase.

The Turkish fighter moved two kilometers into Syrian airspace while the Russian bomber at no stage violated Turkish airspace, Bondarev stressed.

The crew of the second Su-24M had a clear view of the moment the missile was fired from the Turkish F-16, and reported this to base.

Commander Bondarev noted that a pair of Turkish F-16Cs had been in the area close to the attack zone for more than an hour prior to the attack, which explains their presence in the area. The time needed to get the aircraft ready at the Diyarbak?r airfield and travel to the attack zone is an estimated 46 minutes."

Looks like they will kiss and cry about the 2° C temp rise, the fate of planet and humanity, and forget their quarrels about the "night of the long knives" in Kurd vs ISIS turd daily shoot outs around Syrac's OK Corral under the thunder of bombs raining from heaven !

My Earp boys vs your Clanton boys!

And Fabius of France nows turns his coat and says : "I have no problem to walk  to Raqqa with Assad's troops."

When the Franco-Ottoman Atlantist alliance gets ripped open once more, by the Russian bear and the Persian fox!

What tune do we march to on that road?

La Marseillaise, Putin's neo Internationale or Iran's version of Allah o Akbar ?

Sunni crescent now squirming with rage on a hidden page!

This unholy alliance has all the makings of a Macedonian salad. Lay on Alexander of Moscow !

Watch out for Barzini's web and oil's hold on the nuts of western finance.

Putin now has to realize his oats are sown between Poland and Urals, not all the way to Cathay. The Asian pivot is a game on hold as he gets more bold in a divided and defensive Europe verging on the precipice of the Tarpeian rock of old.

"Dear Leader" wants us vaporized, we know it and we do nothing. A lesser man than Putin would have done it by now.

Why settle with S-400s?  Stack up on Cruise Missiles that can reach all the ISIL Oil and Arms Smuggling Infra within TRKish Lands and those at Sea.  I'd even offer FRA to operate out of TEAM_RUS' Bases, so they can avoid TRK completely while NATO Politicians consider dumping TRK off the Team Roster.

Yea, start boarding Erodgan Jr's Ships to confiscate and resell ISIL Oil on behalf of SYR.  FRA and RUS can pull that off.

Bonus Round?  Reuse "Junior's" Tankers under RUS, FRA, SYR, IRQ, or IRN Registry; and ship Oil and sell at or near Market Px..

The Operation Pays for itself...

Erdogan must go.  My sympathies to the Turkish People who aren't involved in the Regime Change Circus.  Most of us would have tolerated a "Moderate Nation-State" version of ISIL(who have in the beginning, did some acts of Nation Building); but their hostilities to the Rest of the World and the "Scorched Earch" results of the general Anti-Assad Campaign have, IMHO, gone too far.

The Telegraph item is pure trash propaganda.  It is disappointing to see an otherwise reputable newspaper print so many lies.

This bullshit of supporting Russia by half the commenters here is utter garbage.

Putin is a piece of shit and if you don't know why instead of your conspiracy against the fed go find out what he did to get to power and what he has done .

ZH isn't a forum for enlightened people, it's for idiots who think they've obtained some higher knowledge who in reality would make poor choices for leaders in any community.

The ignorance in the comments is astounding. Google experts at best who obtain information from free crappy conspiracy sites rather than through education and paid research - which I assume most ZH commenters couldn't afford

all putin has to do is keep killing isis, they'll be forced to stay in turkey, or run to the northeast, or southwest.

The over 170,000 reads and 9 pages of comments on this item are a tribute to ZH's careful work in collecting and presenting all available information on these events.  Very well done !

The treachery of the participants in these events is bottomless.  Sadly, it must be said that, included in this cast is Barack Obama.  He has told the press his assigned lines about Turkey protecting its airspace.  Obama is both intelligent and articulate.  He surely must know that his statement was a treacherous lie.  The Turks preplanned their attack based on information about Russian flights that the Russians themselves shared with other members of the "coalition" as part of their voluntary agreement with the US to avoid accidental contacts. The probability that the US CIA or military intelligence passed this information on to the Turks is very high.  Putin's characterization of the attack as a "stab in the back" is perfectly accurate.
