Meet The Peer 2 Peer Lending Website That Funded The San Bernardino Shooters

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the course of the past nine months or so, we’ve documented the rise of online P2P lending.

Back in May, for instance, we highlighted a Bloomberg piece which suggested the volume of P2P loans is set to hit nearly $80 billion in 2015. “LendingClub, the No. 1 player worldwide, is trading at a market value of about $7 billion even though it lost $33 million last year,” Bloomberg said, before warning that “in a flashback to the subprime mortgage boom, P2P startups have begun bundling and selling off loans through securitizations.”

Well of course they have. When it comes to new, potentially lucrative markets, Wall Street is a bit like Christopher Walken’s character Frank White from the 1990 cult classic “King Of New York”: “Nothing goes down unless I’m involved.” The more demand there is for P2P loans to securitize, the lower will be P2P lenders’ underwriting standards creating a repeat of the originate to sell dynamic that helped create the housing bubble and is now playing out across the auto loan space. But when it comes to P2P loans, there’s another problem. P2P loans create the conditions whereby borrowers can refi high-interest debt via personal loans, transferring credit risk from large financial institutions to private lenders in the process. It’s not entirely clear what the implications of that shift might ultimately be, especially if the market continues to grow rapidly, but one thing is clear: using a relatively low-interest P2P loan to pay off a high-interest credit card is no different in principle than using a new credit card that comes with a teaser rate to pay off an old credit card.

As sinister as all of that sounds, it turns out P2P lending may have an even darker side. Those who follow trends in the ABS market - and let’s face it, who doesn’t, right? - might recall that back in January, BlackRock put together a $327 million deal dubbed “Consumer Credit Origination Loan Trust 2015-1.” The loans in the collateral pool were made through Prosper, the world’s second-biggest P2P lender. In an unprecedented move, Moody’s actually rated the damn thing, giving the senior tranche an investment-grade mark of “Baa3”. Here’s what Bloomberg said at the time

The company, on behalf of its clients, scooped up more than $330 million of consumer debt arranged since November 2013 by Prosper Marketplace Inc., the so-called peer-to-peer lending platform that finds investors to fund borrowers, according to bond-offering documents. New York-based BlackRock is seeking to sell most of that debt to other institutions while retaining a risky slice.

The purchases represent about a sixth of debt obtained through Prosper during that period, showing how the platform has moved beyond funding from mom-and-pop investors. BlackRock’s bond sale, known as a securitization, could be a harbinger for more such deals, said Matt Burton, chief executive officer of Orchard Platform, a data provider to clients investing through online markets like Prosper’s and one run by LendingClub Corp.

“One of the large bottlenecks in this space for institutional investors has been volume,” he said. “That’s all changing.”

Yes, “that’s all changing,” thanks to the proliferation of P2P lending. In fact, loans originated through San Francisco-based Prosper jumped to $1.6 billion, last year, up some 350 percent.

If you aren’t familiar with P2P, you might be asking yourself: “what kind of loans does Prosper make?” Well, according to their website, they arrange debt consolidation loans, home improvement loans, special occasion loans, and personal loans for business.

We’re not sure which of those categories “jihadist massacre” falls under (we assume “special occasion”), but as Reuters reports, San Bernardino mass shooters Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, obtained a $28,500 loan through Prosper not long before killing 14 and injuring nearly two dozen in a bloody rampage last Wednesday. From Reuters

Online lender Prosper recently made a $28,500 loan to Syed Rizwan Farook who, along with his wife, killed 14 people at a holiday party last week in San Bernardino, California, according to a source familiar with the matter.

One of the Reuters government sources said Farook and Malik apparently pursued a scenario previously followed by U.S.-based militants by draining their bank accounts and maxing out credit lines before embarking on what they believe to be a suicide mission, knowing that they would not have to pay off the debts.

Prosper evaluates borrowers for loans, which are originated by third-party bank WebBank. Prosper then sells the loans off to investors.

As Prosper puts it in the "How It Works" section of its website, "Prosper is the market leader in peer-to-peer lending-a popular alternative to traditional loans and investing options. Prosper allows people to invest in each other in a way that is financially and socially rewarding. We cut out the middleman to connect people who need money with those who have money to invest...so everyone prospers!"

Well, "everyone" didn't exactly "prosper" here and because this didn't turn out to be one of the site's more "socially rewarding" ventures you can bet the FBI is taking a hard look at just how the company went about evaluating this particular loan prior to approval. More from Prosper:

Here's how it works:

  • Borrowers choose a loan amount, purpose and post a loan listing.
  • Investors review loan listings and invest in listings that meet their criteria.
  • Once the process is complete, borrowers make fixed monthly payments and investors receive a portion of those payments directly to their Prosper account.

We're reasonably sure Farook didn't list "general terrorist purposes" as the reason for his loan request which begs the question of whether the person who provided the funding was complicit in the plot or whether it was merely some innocent benefactor who bought the story that Farook posted (indeed, given his occuption as an employee of the state, he probably looked, on paper, like a good credit).

In any event, they'll surely be much more on this story in the very near future but for the time being, we'll simply leave you with two images, the first from Prosper's website, and the second from the aftermath of Farook and Malik's shootout with police. Here's what the pictures have in common: a husband, a wife, a car, and Prosper. We'll leave it to readers to spot the differences.

I need a bit of help here. Notice the picture of the body and the blood. Now compare that to all other pics. Overhead news helicopter pics ect. The position of the body laying next to the gun all the way across the street. And then it isnt there but closer to the vehicle. Also look at the pool of blood. It seems to be missing in certain pics. Something appears to be wrong here.

Helicopter circling and flys over -- takes a pic a pic of terrorist with little blood.

Helicopter now circles back and takes a pic with more blood because the terrorist is now bleeding out all over the street.

One more circle overhead by the helicopter and the blood pool would probably be larger/different.

If this was some sort of false flag thingy -- the Feds would have decleared a no fly zone over the event -- yet a bunch of news helicopters were allowed to take all kinds of high res pictures as they pleased. Now, does that seem like they were trying to hide their nefarious operation by allowing a bunch of snooping news helicopters with high tech cameras to take a shitload of pictures of their dark operation?

Logic people. Logic...

No. They want to regulate P2P out of existence. It is too much competition for Big Banking that wants a monopoly on loan origination.

The excuse is that P2P is supposedly now being used to fund Terrrrrrrrrrists.

They are just spinning this factoid that they borrowed money, what a crime, for propaganda

They did not do it.

Kirk's 3 simple rules for money lending:

1. Never lend to anyone, if the odds of getting back your Capital aren't high (p=0.95).  DYH (Do Your Homework).

2. Have Collateral or a Robust Collection Plan (RCP) to cover the risky portion (p=0.05)

3. Collect your Capital+Profit.  Else... either cash in the Collateral, or implement RCP

Clearly someone did not follow these 3 simple Rules.  In which case, they deserve everything they got, or didn't get.

alphahammer is attempting to instill fear.

Damaging US Aviation is child's play for any terrrrrrist.

Commercial Planes can easily be shot down on approach or departure, alphahammer, by targeting the engines...with high caliber weapons or guidrd rockets.

And since the alphabet agencies are closely monitoring this site then why has nobody done anything to prevent that?

I have previously exposed that, along with many other weaknesses, on this website over the past three years.

Disappearing me will not prevent it.

The truth is that there is a miniscule terrorist threat.

alphahammer, an alphabet agent, is attempting to promote fear in order to stifle speech on this website...which he considers a threat as it EXPOSES INCONVENIENT TRUTHS.

And of course I will continue to be be critical of the TSA Security measures when THEY ARE MOLESTING CHILDREN. They do NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO PREVENT TERRORISM.

I will continue to expose the soft targets. Restricting publication does not serve to harden potential targets, does it?

(I am still here publishing, alphahammer.)

I have even published my address...as if the alphabet agencies did not know, or, perhaps would rather not want us to know that they may be bluffing on their ability to garner intel.

This is not about terrorism.

It is all about CONTROL...controlling the dialouge, controlling the masses, in order to maintain the continuance of the oligarch dictatorship in the United States.

The grass roots expression of populist capitalism that has no other compass but totalitarian creed like Third Reich.

When greed and ambition feed "sieg heil" fascism; of all colours, any colours, its leads down the road to perdition.

Power is an aphrodisiac and like Leni Riefenstahl proved, the role of art and discipline to serve an ideology is just awesome. But a Nuremberg celebration of populist ideology is but smoke and mirrors in the eyes of History.

It takes  the opposite to express the same sentiment in art like Guernica...

The End and the means ; Remember that Donald Duck.

You are as obnoxious as those whom you ostensibly fight like Hitler fought the legs of Versailles treaty's  "revenge" against the people's disaster to which Germany was subjected, as collateral damage to Kaiser Wilhem's world war in name of Prussian  'lebensraum'.

American 'lebensraum' now is MIIC and TTP and Nafta type deals to  control world resources; going sour in runaway debt to dilute "reserve currency" into its mirror opposite. Hegemon does not want to lose his "exorbitant privilege".

And Donald is neo-Fuhrer candidate who won't accept the consequences of Pax Americana's gamble of "all in" in the world casino; a strategy now going sour like Kaiser Wilhem's WW1 gamble.

Thank you Dear Henry, Ronnie and GWB for having taken the US down that road, when they had won the war against USSR in 1991, only to lose it in "NWO towering colossus" hubris!

The colossus of Rhodes... is a icon of decadence!

Now its blowback. Those Islamofascists are the mirror opposites (and surrogate blood allies) of GWB/Cheney/RUmsfeld  "KAiser Wilhem" type game of "our way of life non negotiable" imperial lebensraum.

Truthfully the guy probably had OK credit and not so great savings.  I've gotten a Propser Loan.  It's all automated and most of the loans funded are now done by single investor if you have good enough credit.  You list loan and these bots look automatically at credit score income etc.  Instead of lots of people getting a small piece of the action, one person gets it all.  The loan size he got is reserved for those with better credit.  When I heard Web Bank, I figured he went to Prosper.  When individuals invest you can provide a convincing sobstory, but for the institutional participants it's all income and credit score.  He probably could have put Jihad as purpose, and still would have been funded.

And P2P lenders are bad compared to.....what?  Compared to the TBTF banks issuing these credit card and other loans at higher rates?  Compared to not having money at all and forgoing the gains possible by having financing?

Ok, I just want to get this out there, I went WAY overboard last night on the Trump thread, for that I am sorry, and I know I will get downarrows not matter what I say, fine.

Here is the crux of the problem, nobody wants to hear the truth, they woud rather believe a lie, than face the truth.

Here it is...there are good and bad actors in every society, race, creed, religion, govt, bank, etc...It is when the generalizations of a whole society, race, creed, etc are used to define the the problem.

I don't see Israeli's, Britons, French, Americans, Germans, Brazilians, Spaniards, Russians, Chinese, or even Muslims ALL running around with suicide vests, AK47's and spraying innocent cilvilians every other week. I do see radicalized muslims doing it. I don't see any other group doing that at all.

America got hit twice by radical Muslims, once 1993 and 2001, and at those particular times, we had not bomed one Muslim, other than Saddam, with 160 other countries due to the invasion of Kuwait. That is the truth of it, Saddam was a bad actor, period, just like Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin and Hitler.

What are the solutions, hell if I know at this point, everyone is at each others throats anyway. I will be called a zionist, jew, bigot, whatever, just because I don't hate them. I don't care what anyone thinks at this point personally, you (if American) have the 1A, and I will die to let you keep it. Just like the 2A.

But when Obama & Co. cannot call it Islamic Terrorism, and define it, he cannot stop it! But he wants to restrict the 2A for us? I don't see law abiding Americans running around the streets killing everyone, except in places like Chicago, and a few other, which have the strictist gun limitations in America.

There can be no dialogue, until people come up out of the rabbit hole, me included.

Now, was that a reasonable post? Will I be ignored and downarrowed, and called names, maybe, but it doesnt matter, it's not about me. It is about all of us, and since we can't seem to get along, and have reasonable debates, and I have tried in the past only to be labelled one way or another, I went OFF, and did the same freaking thing, and it hurt didn't it? I was wrong to sling ad hom attacks, but you see that is what I got for a long time.

If you hate me fine, that is life, but these radicals will stop at nothing to destroy anything not Islam...not all Muslims do this, but I ask, where are those moderates, and why are they not outing the radicals?

Also, why is America the world's policeman? We are going broke doing it.

No solutions can be had, if we cannot speak to each other with logic and truth...I will quit my generalizations, if you do, but continue, and I will.

Simple as that. And I am not asking anyone for any apoligies either, the moment is HOT.

1993 was an admitted setup by the Feds,,, and 2001 even a kindergartner would question the governments assertion that kerosene melted hardened steel girders.

And you forgot the Oklahoma bombing was not Muslim. The only thing consistent in all three are the US government involvement.

And don't forget the women and children the US government burned to death at the Koresh 'compound' over illegal weapons that didn't exist,,, then there is Randy Weavers wife and kid killed by federale's because he wouldn't play.

In those last two incidents more US citizens were killed than all the latest supposed Muslim killings in the USA. Where is the outrage and condemnation towards the terrorist there?

I am talking about what we are facing now, more to the point.

I think we can get on board with that much? right?

You forget that AMerica killed 9 million people in Nam/Laos/Cambodia (I won't quarrel with anybody who says its 3 million) for NO RHYME NOR REASON to begin a world wide mayhem that lasted 60 years. That was just for starters, it went all over the world that mayhem all for Power without any rhyme nor reason. Pure Mafia skullduggery. Pol POt was the local blowback that AMerica's Cambodian mayhem created and its GIAP who took them out, the same guy who took out CIA hit squads in Saigon's rape by the Americans.

So don't sit on your high horse and cry about the MONSTERS that your country's leaders created in Islamo lands ALL FOR OIL HEGEMONY.Those Islamo fascists were schooled like pitbulls by the CIA in Afghan then in SYrac; like in Salvador and in Columbia/Mehico drug cartels. In vietnam we were fighting the spread of communism, if you think that is no rhyme or reason, there is no reason to discuss further. Pol Pot came along before Vietnam BTW.

About Afghanistan, we were helping the Mulsim Mujahadeen fight the Soviet invasion, and created Al-CIA-DUH then, so don't be so disingenius with me about that either.

The highest-ranking Soviet bloc intelligence official ever to defect to the West, Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa is at it again.

How the Soviet bloc planted 4,000 agents of influence in the Islamic world, armed with hundreds of thousands of copies of the most infamous anti-Semitic book in history, to fan the flames of ancient Arab resentments against the U.S. and Israel and sow the seeds of anti-Semitism that would later bloom in the form of violence and terror toward Jews and Christians.

North Vietnam/Viet Cong military and civilian war dead 533,000 Grand total of war deaths: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos (1954-1975) 1,450,000

OK. Like I said this ghoulish number counting of dead bodies is like trying to talk about inflation.

Here is my take which is higher than the official take as accounted by the press of those times as a result of US games in SE Asia :

VIetnam : 2 million including purges of South Nam post US departure (collateral damage on US "friends").

Laos : 1-2 Million. Statistics very uncertain. But locals vouch for a lot of unaccounted dead.

Cambodia including Pol Pot collateral genocide attributable to Kissinger's ouster of Sihanouk : 3 million

US plays in Indonesia and TImor (same period 60-80) : 1.5 million.

TOTal : 7.5 to 8.5 million based on including collateral wars.

Not saying these were killed by Uncle Sam but were the result of Pax Americana predatory games for no reason !

Saddam was our guy before he wasn't. He didn't find his F-4s uder the Christmas tree. Just like Iran didn't get their F-14s from the Easter Bunny. In any case, the one thing Saddam wasn't was a religious Islmac nutcase. I think Barry is prolly more of a Muslim than Saddam was.  Various religions were tolerated and the women did not wear the veil.

Agreed, we arm a lot of the world via hedgemony, other govts do it as well. AS we take out dictators, some created by the west, others not so much, we created a vacuum for this to breed. But it is here now, what do do about it?

EDIT: The US did not put Saddam in place, but was working with us against Iran. He did turn on us and Kuwait, and did a lot of ugly things, do you overlook that?

As to Iran we fucked that place up too, but they took hostages for 444 days, so both thngs are bad. Who was the good actor?

Relax. Your position will be clearer when you spend 10-20 minutes looking at global Russias arms sales last year.

You suggest the US is the "worlds cop". On balance, Russia is the worlds largest juvenile delinquent creating an environment whereby the world NEEDS a world cop. Ying and Yang unfortunately...

Read this and you will be set free. When you read the forward, think about the current world we live in -- then remember that Putin was a Major in the KGB/FSB with the official title of "Disinformation Officer". This book be required reading in American high school. Seriously.

Well, if it works like the other sites like Kiva, then you just need to click on their backers.

Kiva lets little people feel like fat-cat lenders to those barely passable for human in less fortunate countries.

Ok, that was harsh. I'm sure I would be missing more teeth than I already am had I been born there.

Anyway, Kiva has a bank that makes the loans. All the backers at Kiva do, is to back-fill the loan the bank already made.

As far as I can tell, there is no interest paid to the backer, only the bank.

Essentially you get to make loans to people that pay you back the full amount that was loaned by the bank, with the bank being the only party to profit.

If you need a reminder how much of a difference there is in standard of living between the US and pretty much any other country without nukes, go look at the people asking for money at this site.

Funny (not really) how the picture shows the wanted black Yukon and the "dead" perpetrator conveniently has his shirt up exposing the place in which he was supposedly shot & quite the camera angle...anyone hear about any funerals...seen any pics from them...and believe me; people use their phones at funerals.

I saw three types of photos on the day of the "crime"; pictures of a triage area set that looked like Boston Marathon & LA Airport where no one actually was shot or died.  The pictures are of a blocked out area with plenty of first respondents and stretchers and like city workers where 3-4 are casually (as if a drill) chatting while the other attends to 2-3 "victims".

The next noticeable feature was the many press opportunities to film the passing people on stretchers moving around without little to no blood and moving to no apparent ambulance.

Then the third and most striking "flag" is the men have their shirts tore open while riding the stretchers and the women never do while riding the same stretchers.  In one photo of a woman being paraded in the stretcher for photo opportunity; she had the left arm showing, sleeve up to show a red hole (looka like a bullet entry) without and signs of pain and no blood and no bandage.  Then the next one comes into view with a foot injury, a little blood color near the foot with one shoe on and the other off, no signs of pain.  Then you have the ones paraded that are sitting partly up in the stretchers holding two hands to the forehead like one would do with a bad migraine, followed by the one with the neck brace that prevents any movement.

With so many lies tainted with such little truth; who can know?

Perhaps we should all march to Washington dressed as Syrians and bring our women with burkas and demand better guns and ammo or else; might just fool them.

Well it's not what I would call peer to peer lending because the borrowers and investors are anonymised from each other and ne'er do the twain meet.

This is no different from ordinary banking practice and per the website:

"**All personal loans are made by WebBank, a Utah-chartered Industrial Bank, Member FDIC. All Prosper personal loans are unsecured, fully amortized personal loans."

Peer to peer implies that the investors and borrowers are matched up and the investor says yes or no, ....  this might work in a small town where everyone knows each other.

So they borrowed money and gave a fair chunk of it to his mum, sounds like a doting son to me, or it could have been to pay them back for a helping hand earlier on.

The thing that intrigues me is the video I saw of them being "chased" down the road, at about 20mph with their hazard lights going, they didn't look like they were trying to escape anything.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SNij3k_JJ4 (See just the first part of this ... the rest is clearly disinfo)
