A tale of two home invasions

hedgeless_horseman's picture

This is a tale of two home invasions.

First, some highlights from this article.

May 1, 2015

Adrian Anthony, 21; Demetre Brown, 22; Alexander Dupree, 24; and Michael Pugh, 23; were sentenced Friday, after a jury on March 10 found them guilty of a host of felony charges, including rape, criminal deviate conduct, carjacking, criminal confinement, aggravated battery and robbery.

The convictions were handed down about 18 months after the men broke into a house on East 79th Street, ransacked the home, sexually assaulted resident Eileen Potenza and her adult daughter and left with many of their belongings. The Indianapolis Star typically does not name people who are or may have been victims of sexual assault, but Potenza spoke publicly about the ordeal after the verdicts were handed down.

Eileen Potenza and her husband, Carl, both read emotional statements in court before Borges handed down the sentences. Carl Potenza, who has a physical problem that requires him to wear leg braces, was beaten up and held captive in a bedroom during the burglary.

                 Gang raped mother and daughter

Carl Potenza said the brutal violation of his wife and daughter continue to haunt him. Another daughter, who was not home at the time, also was traumatized and is in counseling, he said.

Still, Carl Potenza said, the "two hours of hell" was followed by an amazing outpouring of help and support from friends and strangers touched by their horrific experience.

He concluded his statement by saying "we don't want these guys to ever have a chance to do something like this again."

Turning to the four defendants — who sat handcuffed, shackled and connected at the waist by heavy chains — the preschool teacher asked: "When and why did your lives go so terribly wrong that you thought that this behavior was OK?"

Answers to some of her questions were revealed in court Friday. Prosecutors noted all four young men had criminal records, both as juveniles and adults, before the home 2013 invasion. All had extensive histories of drug and alcohol abuse. And all had histories of violating court orders and prison rules, as well as failed attempts at rehabilitation.

But the horrific "nature of the crimes," Borges said, clearly outweighed any mitigating circumstances that would have justified reducing the sentences. She noted the men did not just attack and rob the family, they humiliated the victims over the course of hours.

According to graphic details of the crimes revealed during the trial in March, the four men and two friends drove to the Potenza home early on Oct. 29, 2013. Eileen and her daughter said in court that they each were forced to drive to an ATM to get money. Eileen Potenza was shot twice — in the leg and in the ankle — for trying to escape.

Carl Potenza was restrained in the bedroom with a blanket over him throughout the home invasion.

Anthony admitted that he shot Eileen Potenza and sexually assaulted her in a car, after they had left the home to go to the ATM. At least four of the men sexually assaulted the couple's daughter.

Some of the same men also are charged in another brutal home invasion that happened five days earlier in a young couple's home on North Spring Mill Road, less than three miles away. The two vicious attacks left residents across the city on edge.

Anthony also was convicted in April in the murder of construction worker Robbie Gibson, during a Nov. 27, 2013, armed robbery on North Gray Street — about a month after he and the other men burglarized and robbed two Far-Northside homes. He is awaiting sentencing in that case, which will add even more time in prison.

Spells also pleaded guilty to burglary in the Spring Mill Road home invasion. He faces a sentence of 50 to 80 years in prison on all charges in the two cases and is scheduled to be sentenced July 29.

Next, contrast the Potenza's story with these highlights from this article.

September 30, 2015

FOLKSTON, Ga. -- Two sisters fought back against the man police say attacked them inside of their own home, killing him in the process.

Police said it happened about 7 p.m. Tuesday night in a Charlton County, Georgia home on Cedar Ridge Road. That's when Johnathan Green allegedly barged in and attacked before one of the sisters fatally shot him.

Green's body was sent to Savannah for an autopsy.

Johnathan Green was shot to death by a woman police say he attacked. His family says otherwise.

Taylor said both sisters are over the age of 65. One moved in to take care of the other, he told First Coast News.

First Coast News spoke to Green's family, who said Green was mentally incompetent and would have never done something like authorities are alleging.

As the cliché goes: when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.  Speaking of mentally incompetent, thank God those sisters had, "common sense," to have a gun and know how to use it, to borrow President Obama's favorite gun phrase.

Of course, you can agree to give up your natural right of self defense, and the Second Amendment that was written to stop the government from infringing upon this natural right, in the hopes that the government will protect you, like in Chicago, where they have severe gun control laws.

If you really do not want to be a victim in your own home, then get an equalizer that can stop an attacker, or multiple attackers.  In my experience, that equalizer is a firearm, especially if you are a woman over 65, or disabled.  But for the love of God, get good training on how to use it, and how to safely practice using it.  Then practice regularly, keep it handy, and away from small children, until they can learn how to safely use it, like this 14 year old.  Please read my article:  Guide for Learning to Use a Sidearm to Defend Yourself, Your Loved Ones, and Your Property, Should a Race War Break Out.

Next, answer the following important question: HOW LONG ARE THE SCREWS SECURING THE HINGES OF YOUR FRONT DOOR?

Go unscrew one and measure it now, friends.  It will take less than one minute.

If they are less than 3 inches, or you do not have a good deadbolt, then you have a one-kick-door.   We will see how you do when a vehicle loaded with bad hombres pulls into your driveway...and a moment later are all in your home with guns to your head.

We need to take responsibility for our own safety, and to have our mind, body, and equipment ready at all times. We all need to work together to create an environment that is hostile to bad guys.  We don't need more gun-free zones like San Bernadino (14 killed),  Ft. Hood (13 killed), Sandy Hook (27 killed), Columbine High School (13 killed), and Utøya Norway, (77 killed), where psychopaths can mow us down at their leisure.  The hope that criminals and psychopaths will not obtain or use weapons because it is illegal is a fantasy.  Again, just look at Chicago, and Paris.

Don't EVER open the door for strangers.  Always keep your doors locked, install door jamb armor with 3-1/2 stainless screws, always use the intercom when someone rings, always carry a weapon, and get the training and find the will to use it.

"An armed society is a polite society, " -Heinlein.

Finally, if you know someone special that likes the finer things in life, and lives in an area where they may need to defend those finer things...and their life...[against multiple armed home invaders] I offer the following to help you even the odds:

It's more about getting to know your weapon of choice.

A good pump is my first choice as it is less prone to malfunctions and jambs.

As far as good ammo to run through them, Lapua makes some really good stuff and it is sold here in the states under the Wolf brand name.

Click here for some 1oz rifled slugs and 9 pellet 00 buck at good prices.

Bah - for the price of the Benelli you can get a Mossberg Persuader with a breachers grip and a Linberta Tac semi with a +2. Double your pleasure, double your fun.

/and still have shells money left over...

And for price of a single 14 gauge steel stiffened door, frame and multi-point lock ($5000+) or one that actually looks nice ($10,000+) you can buy a whole lot of Benellis. (The SWAT guys "knocking" is funny...)

Fortification is damn expensive.  Unless you are financially wealthy (and willing to spend handsomely), some minor key upgrades and ANY quality firearm that you are trained to PROFICIENTLY use is going to be the most practical solution.

fortification is CHEAP.  don't go for any commercially marketed safety BS.

you can get a local metal distributor to cut steel strips up for you and line your jamb for striker plate etc...Also easy to replace wood studs with some steel too.   It buys enough time to be locked n loaded to repel the thugs.

Fortification isn't cheap, the illusion of fortification can be cheap.  And there are often inexpensice remidiations which can be performed which will delay or inhibit amtateurs.  But a simple $50 pry bar will open a door in under 5 seconds, faster than a lot of homeowners fiddling with their keys.  Residential construction products simply aren't geared towards high security.

HOW LONG ARE THE SCREWS SECURING THE HINGES OF YOUR FRONT DOOR?

You don't want a one-kick door.

You want some time after you hear the bang.

Even just a few seconds makes a big difference.

@ Hedgeless_horseman:

You keep trying to sell readers products that are, for all intents and purposes a wasteful use of their money.

"Tacticool" is no substitute for training, or experience.

All the equipment in the world doesn't mean shit if you don't know how to use it or can't get to it in time.

If your Mrs. is worried about home-invasion attacks, then invest in protective window film, security plants in front of the windows, and high security doors.

There are plenty of cheap, low-tech solutions that make a house very difficult to breach, which buy the occupants a lot of additional time.

Telling your readers "Buy THIS gun" is irrelevant if said reader lives in a state/country where guns are hard to obtain.

I know the good intentions are there, so don't get me wrong; it's not a personal attack, it is the idea that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution, for anything.

I am sorry you feel that purchasing a firearm and learning to use it, or upgrading the screws in your doors, is a wasteful use of money.

If your Mrs. is worried about home-invasion attacks, then invest in protective window film, security plants in front of the windows, and high security doors.

So, if our home (and presumably the two homes in the article) would have our own mini-Maginot Line with plastic film on the windows, thorny shrubbery, and better doors, then home invaders would move on to commit rape and murder at the neighbor's home?

I stopped counting your fallacious straw-man arguments after three.

Did you even read the article, or did you just look at the photos?

Hedgeless:

Fallacy? Really?

You're the moron who spends thousands of dollars on a "Tacti-cool" shotgun, and posts 'selfies' on Zerohedge, as if you shooting at pumpkins with a $1000 gun, is somehow more effective than shooting at them with a $200 Mossberg from Walmart.

You're the jackass who's more concerned with "What to do, AFTER the perp gets in", as opposed to "Let's PREVENT the perp from getting in".

Yeah, sure: The average rapist tries to break into a house. He can't get in, because the house is more secure than the average.

So, he knocks on the neighbor's door, like a Girl Scout, selling cookies.

Go back to posting pictures of your food. Your insecurities are more tolerable that way.

Your repeated use of this straw man fallacy indicates to me that you resent others that have earned more money than you, or have nicer things.  Are you a socialist?

You're the jackass who's more concerned with "What to do, after the
perp gets in", as opposed to "Let's PREVENT the perp from getting in".

Really?  Are you illiterate?

@ Hedgeless:

I'm not at all resentful. I collect Class III. It's easy to say, "go out and buy THIS", but not everybody has the money to do it. I just converted an MG42 from a DEWAT to Class III under Title 1 - and made about $30,000 (unrealized) from it.

It's not a personal attack.

The point is:

These posts of yours, while well-meaning, are not always practical for the average person.

You know the numbers, man, so I'm not going to waste time preaching about how fucked-up it all is.

You would get a LOT more mileage, by posting about "low-cost, practical" solutions, than by posting "Hey, I got this".

Just like the part of your post about replacing hinge screws, with longer ones, my part about silence has the same value. It is cheap, relatively easy, and extremely effective.

The bulk of the population, needs THESE kinds of solutions.

Peace.

@ Overmedicated:

"Cheap, low-tech", can be almost anything. I alluded to 3 of them in my post above. Security plants being the best one (imho), in the sense that they're natural, living barriers that increase the difficulty of a perimeter being breached. There are plants with these kinds of applications that are cheap, decorative, effective, require very little maintenance, and can grow in almost any environment.

Doors being second best. Good doors (or good door accessories) can be found in almost any price range.

For me, the best security solution is silence. I'm not likely to become anyone's target, because:

a) I don't brag about what I have.

b) I'm very selective about who my friends are.

c) I don't live an ostentatious lifestyle.

There is no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" solution, which is the main point. It depends on a lot of different variables, such as:

Where you live (demographics).

Who you're trying to protect.

The lay of the land (or layout of your house).

Along with screws and bolts, consider a storm door for hardening the entry ways.  Mine are metal Anderson with full glass, triple lock-bars, and the glass is laminated and resist aggressive hammer blows.  But the principle idea for the storm door is because they open outward and cannot be easily kicked in (or moreso; run-jumped) because the door frame is supported by the jamb all around.  They certainly buy time or cause the perp to look for easier targets.  Too, with my storm door locked but open, I have talked to police through it; we can hear each other and they can see me; protection without escalation.

Lowe's sells steel security doors starting at $110, swingout window bars from $40.  Mine has a full metal screen over 1/2" metal bars and sports knob and deadbolt locks. I put standard screening on the back side so I can leave my existing door open for a breeze but be secure from bugs and other 'pests'. Since I have a block home, all windows and doors have 4 1/2" tapcons, about twice as many as code requires, all the way around.  The security door bolts go through steel L-brackets tapconned into the block on the sides, and sit in front of the door frame.  When I had the house built, I spent about $800 to have all the walls poured solid instead of just the cells with rebar. When the house is unoccupied for any length of time, full steel storm shutters cover the windows and doors.

The screws that secure these studded hinges to the steel door and steel frame are only 1/2" long, the masonry straps every 16" in the frame are about 9" long though.  Both the big bad wolf and the three little piggies would have to be creative if they want to get into the Redneck residence uninvited.

The police have fetish for tacticool battering rams, but simple 6 foot prybar will pop more than 99% of door systems.  A mere 4 footer should open well over 90%.  I guess most popo never read Archimedes while being indoctrinated/edumacated.

Doors are a system - there is the door itself which is secured by lock(s) and hinges to the frame and the frame is secured to wall (a lot of which seem to be doubled 2x4 soft wood), a prybar is very effective at finding the weakest link in that system.

As long you are buying 5-pound bags of wood screws to secure metal to wood components be sure to also check the screws securing the door frame to the wall, and the strike plate & box to the frame, in addition to the hinge screws.  And if you find any weak points that need reinforcement Ives & Jon Do offer reasonable prices and good quality for anyone who doesn't want to fork over the if you need to ask... you can't afford it- amounts associated with some of the subsidiaries of Assa Abloy

Older guns can have advantages beyond superior manufacturing - if you are buying intra-state in a private transaction- Barry & the ATF don't need to know (depending on the laws in your state)

One of the last US guns I bought was Marlin 1894SS right after Remington/Cerberus bought them in 2008.  Remington has been going downhill for a while because I had to remove, grind and polish all the feed and ejection parts to get the gun to cycle reliably, it was like the gun came out of Chicom forgery factory and hadn't even been finished.

My choice in a liberal gun law state:...

Being raised in the church and all, I've always enjoyed teaching 4th, 5th and 6th graders the real story of David and Goliath.  What's a spear against a .38?  After making our slings in class we'd take them out on the levee bank and practice with the different shapes of projectiles.  I practiced on the train tracks as a kid, seeing how far I could sling a rock and stay between the rails.

Makes one appreciate the accuracy of the story and the need for practice and understanding situations / odds.  I also like the quietness of the device, not to mention the satisfaction I receive in teaching impressionable minds, meaning the young adult parents of these kids.

...the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?”...

"David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth..."---1Samuel 17:43, 49

I love the versatility and reticence of a wrist rocket. I keep my Haresplitter (equipped with a .040" Nitro bandset and 3/8" shot) on me whenever I leave the house. It's a real peach against surveillance cameras, street lights, windows, and any other targets provided by the state.

2 men charged in death of UNC professor were out on bond

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) --

Court records show that Derick Davis and Troy Arrington Jr., though they are only in their 20s, have spent several years in and out of prison serving time for various crimes: breaking and entering, weapon and drug crimes.

But now they're both charged with murder and the district attorney said he sees a similar trend all the time.

Fortunately Mr. Green was made Good, too bad the others weren't.  A good, reliable 9mm and some practice at the range would make a lot of these animals Good.  I remember reading where one young lady whose father taught her to shoot warded offf (and made one of two attackers Good) when they were busting her door down. The news story didn't specify the caliber, but probably 9mm or 38.  A necessary skill in this Marxist society.

shot guns in home  why not. but hand guns work better in close quarters- sticking the barrel past a door frame might just get you dis armed.

not having a loaded gun in the home - is the worst option. why do you think swat hits at o dark thirty? most of us would never get to any weapon.

but I still have a loaded gun close by. for the idiot criminal. the real pro - well most would have nothing to do with home invasions in the first place.

Remember it can just as easy have been white men that broke into houses and did the same thing.  It's not about race it's about safety and defending yourself and family.

Carl Potenza, who has a physical problem that requires him to wear leg braces

Hey Carl, we use modern firearms and you don't need working legs to defend your family.

Carl Potenza said, the "two hours of hell" was followed by an amazing outpouring of help and support from friends and strangers touched by their horrific experience

Because that's what counts, you get "support" and your wife gets gang-banged. Sweet!!

the preschool teacher asked: "When and why did your lives go so terribly wrong that you thought that this behavior was OK?"

Carl's a fucking bitch; at this point I begin to wish he'd been raped as well.

Some of the same men also are charged in another brutal home invasion that happened five days earlier in a young couple's home on North Spring Mill Road, less than three miles away.

So Carl likely knew savages were on the prowl, and local, but still was taken unawares...

Carl's a piece of shit, and I'd like to interview him and ask if he's hardened his house, bought a dog, and weaponed up, trained up, and armored up. My guess is no, he's to traumatized by being a sack of shit who completely failed as a father, as a husband, and as a head of household.

you said they should have been aware of the previous home invasion and rape?

well, many times local liberal media WILL NOT post any details, photos or ethnicities of the thugs, or even report the story in a timely fashion when it involved the minority protected class.   They almost always close the comment sections of any story that involves minorities as thugs.

You may be just a tad off on your assumptions RafterMan. Yes, Carl loved being the center of attention and receiving the outpouring of support, but you are assuming his wife did not like being the center of attention during the gang bang. Maybe she loved have 4 black dicks rammed in her liberal ass. Carl may be secretly jealous he didn't receive some of that action as well. After all, the best deterrent to getting fucked in your ass against you will is shot of lead., and Carl chose not to have a deterrent, so what are we supposed to read into that ???

Sadly, idiots still believe in the whole "maybe they are drunk guys at the wrong house!" If people actually looked at what happens during home invasions, then every American would have a gun in the house.

Reading about these crimes won't change the progressives mindset only experiencing that wave of panic when you have that "this isn't happening moment " would have an effect. Your life is changed for better or worse in relationship to how you respond. Preparing may keep your drawers clean. Lack of experience explains why a lot of this gun control bs emminates from the faculty lounge and the physically protected class. There is no bargaining with the depraved only swift and brutal counter measures and for most that means a gun. It takes preparation to make that response instinctual when shocked . I don't waste time arguing with fools and knaves as represented by thoses pushing gun bans, they won't be there when your doors kicked in. The only good to come from the Obama presidency is recognition by many formerly naive of the concept of corruption under the color of law.

I get upset seeing that white cop shooting a black teen 16 times.

Twice would have been enough.  Then he could have shot 7 more niggers dead instead of wasting valuable lead.
