The Humiliation Is Complete: Assad Can Stay, Kerry Concedes After Meeting With Putin

Tyler Durden's picture

Back on September 20 (so, a full ten days before a three star Russian general strolled into the US Embassy in Baghdad to let the US know that airstrikes in Syria “start in 1 hour”), we said that the US strategy in Syria had officially unraveled.

At the time, John Kerry had just concluded a meeting with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond in London. "For the last year and a half we have said Assad has to go, but how long and what the modality is, that's a decision that has to be made in the context of the Geneva process and negotiation,” Kerry told reporters after the meeting. "It doesn't have to be on day one or month one [and] there is a process by which all the parties have to come together and reach an understanding of how this can best be achieved."

“That this a far, far cry from the hardline rhetoric the US was still clinging to just months ago,” we said, adding that “it marks a tacit recognition of what should have been obvious from the very beginning: the US backed effort to assist Qatar and the Saudis in destabilizing the Assad regime was doomed from the start.”

About a month later, ahead of talks in Vienna, WSJ said the following about Washington's plans for Assad:

The Obama administration entered a crucial round of international talks on Syria’s war prepared to accept a deal that leaves President Bashar al-Assad in place for several months or more during the transition to a new government.

The U.S. shift on the dictator’s future caps months of backtracking on the most significant obstacle to a resolution of the Syrian conflict. While U.S. officials once argued Mr. Assad couldn’t take part in a political transition, they have gradually eased that stance, eventually signaling he wouldn’t have to step down immediately. Now they are planning to negotiate the question of his future in talks being held Friday in Vienna.

The solution Washington sought to broker would “not prejudge the Assad question,” a senior administration official told The Journal.

Of course the Assad "question" has already been "prejudged" - only not by Washington or any of its regional allies. As we've been at pains to explain, Tehran isn't going to allow a US puppet government to be installed in Damascus. It's out of the question. Losing Damascus to Washington and worse, to Riyadh, would severely impair Iran's supply lines to Hezbollah and roll back Iranian influence in the region. For Russia, the stakes are also high. Moscow now has an air base and a naval base in Syria and establishing a foothold in Syria is the first step for The Kremlin on the way to supplanting the US as Mid-East superpower puppet master. In short, even is Assad himself ultimately abdicate, the regime (and our apologies for anyone who finds that term pejorative) will remain in one form or another.

On Tuesday, Kerry was in Russia for talks with Vladimir Putin. As Foreign Policy notes, America's top diplomat was "wicked psyched" that he found a Dunkin Donuts in Moscow:

As for negotiations with Putin over Syria, it appears the humiliation is now complete.

As AP reports, "U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday accepted Russia's long-standing demand that President Bashar Assad's future be determined by his own people, as Washington and Moscow edged toward putting aside years of disagreement over how to end Syria's civil war."

"The United States and our partners are not seeking so-called regime change," Kerry said, adding that the focus is no longer "on our differences about what can or cannot be done immediately about Assad."

In a testament to the fact that mainstream media is beginning to understand just how weak America's negotiating position has become, AP offered the following rather sarcastic assessment:

President Barack Obama first called on Assad to leave power in the summer of 2011, with "Assad must go" being a consistent rallying cry. Later, American officials allowed that he wouldn't have to resign on "Day One" of a transition. Now, no one can say when Assad might step down

Kerry also called demands by the "moderate" opposition that Assad step down before peace negotiations begin an "obvious nonstarter."

But even as Kerry and Sergei Lavrov hailed the talks as a "big negotiating day," Lavrov's de facto deputy, the sharp-tongued Maria Zakharova, stressed that "serious differences" remain between the US and Russia with regard to Syria.

One point of contention is Washington's insistence on differentiating between "moderate" and "non-moderate" elements operating to oust the Assad government.

That and other pressing issues are expected to be discussed next week in New York at what Kerry says will be a "major international conference" on Syria.

As for relations between Moscow and Washington, Kerry said this: "There is no policy of the United States, per se, to isolate Russia."

Right. No "per se" policy. So in other words, it may not be an explicit, de jure mandate, but it sure as hell seems like a tacit, de facto foreign policy position.

The biggest Russian bargaining chip for the ME, is, back-off or we make Iran a nuclear armed power in the region.

That stops everything. The games, the Saudis, Israel.  The new game in town would then to be to ensure a sane leader in Iran.

All of a sudden Iran gest invited to all the negotiating tables.

US has nukes in Poland --why shouldn't Russians have nukes in Iran. The idiot Poles started WW2 by refusing to hand over Gdansk back to the germans, even when western media and leaders agreed they should. Unfortunately , Churchill and his Zionist handlers/sponsors had other ideas. The Poles can't be trusted any more than the iranians. Get nukes out of Poland, the ME, including Israel. That's the best solution.

"The Poles can't be trusted any more than the iranians."

Perhaps, but they are consistent.

Here's a thought:

A young Polish man, born in Warsaw, was filled with hatred for Russia, much like many other Poles.  The young man, called "Zbiggy" by his friends, came up with an effective idea to hurt Russia: Whip up extreme Islamic elements to fight Russia in Afghanistan, and hopefully destabilize Russia itself.  He gave the idea to his friend, Jimmy, who used it.

It worked!  Russia was damaged, and like all good Poles at the time, Zbiggy did his Happy Dance.

Remarkably, in spite of his far-sighted Polish intellect, the Polish genius Zbiggy may have overlooked the long term consequences of gathering together religious lunatics and heavily arming them.

Surprisingly, Zbiggy's policies have spurred an unexpected dramatic increase in European tourism, and now Europe has millions of new tourists who would like to stay there for an extended vacation.  In light of the shortage of adequate accommodations, what can our European friends do to accommodate them?

Well, since this whole tourist issue resulted from the idea of a natural born citizen of Poland, and grew out of Polish hatred for Russia, one fair solution for Europe is to have Poland host ALL of the new tourists who would like to visit Europe.  These are polite tourists who will adopt Polish culture and will never cause any burdens for their hosts.

There is also the possibility that many tourists also will visit the Good Ol' USA.  I understand that there is very fine housing in Washingtion, DC, that they will find appealing.

The point is, we don't give the Poles enough credit for their contributions to humanity, but it is time to reward them for their fine work.

Obama schmoe” has recently become an all-pervading part of Russian pop-culture. There are “Obama schmoe” bumper stickers (in addition to others, like “Obama is bad” and “Obama is the devil”)...

There are satellite photographs of the slogan in white paint on the runway of the Russian air base in Syrian Latakia. There, it serves as a background for Russian warplanes.

Zbigniew Brzezinski is running US Foreign Policy, with a few touches from Paul Wolfowitz and of course Henry Kissinger.

If you read "The Grand Chessboard" it's so incredibly obvious what is going on here.

Putin's problem is he can't allow the US to set up a ring of dumpster fires around Russia's perimeter.  This draws Russia into foreign wars Putin really wants no part of.  Until now, Brzezinski's career high point was drawing the USSR into Afghanistan.  Now he's doing it again.  The Ukraine gambit didn't work, as Brzezinski himself probably expected, being a Galician by birth.  If there's a crazier, more bloodthirsty group of people in the world than Galicians, I sure as hell can't think of them.

But now, with Turkish collusion all lined up, Russia has been drawn into Syria.  This creates an explosive situation from Iran, through Iraq, Syria, Turkey, the entire Black Sea basin.  Then there is the E.U.'s precarious energy dependency, which the US is manipulating by destroying Libya and sponsoring Boko Haram, in addition to the Ukraine hijinks, and preventing any other pipelines from the Middle East to Europe.

Today's vote to lift the ban on exporting US energy is part of the scheme.  Create a new energy source for the E.U. and destroy the existing ones; then pull the rug out.

Posturing in the Spratly's aside, things are about to get much more violent for China soon enough.  I'm expecting major "Sunni Extremist Terrorism" among what we'll politely pretend to be the Uighurs.

Seriously, download "The Grand Chessboard" from the dubiously-lawful torrent site of your choice.  Don't give that vampire any money.  Don't eat heavily before you read it, but definitely read it.  The events of the past 40 years, and the next 10-20, will suddenly make a whole lot more sense.

Pretty much right on IMO! Although I think we will be seeing a pipeline from Qatar thru Iraq-Syria to Turkey & Europe before long! People, borders, traditions, language & culture are mere sacrifical pawns/lambs in this lethal self-serving geo-political structuring by our good friends & allies in 'I-town!

Wed, 12/16/2015 - 12:54 | 6930951 swmnguy
swmnguy's picture

Sometimes I think as you, that the Qatar pipeline is likely.  Other times, I remember that Brzezinski lists the rivals to US global supremacy as being any power in Eurasia, as to be the global Empire the US has to control, or at least manipulate, Eurasia.  Those rivals would be Russia, China, and the E.U.

Too many people are suckers for the skin-color/culture scam and think somehow Europe is our ally, or the US is Europe's ally.  Wrong.  The US will only allow the Qatar pipeline if the US can cut it off at any moment without having to openly do it.  I've also noticed how the chatter about US energy exports to the E.U. started and ramped up just as the US intervention in Ukraine did.  The rationale is to cut Russia out of the business of selling energy to the E.U., by having the US do it.  That puts E.U. survival completely in US hands.  Even existing E.U. leaders can tell what a vulnerable position that would be.

The only other person at the bar is a well-dressed man staring into his pint. After a few moments of silence the man turns to the backpacker and says in a clear west country accent:

"I became the youngest British prime minister in almost two centuries, but do they call me Cameron the Energetic Young Prime Minister? No."

He continued "I made large-scale changes to welfare, immigration policy, education and healthcare.  But do they call me Cameron the Reformer? No."

"And I was the first British Prime Minister ever to veto an EU economic treaty.  But do they call me Cameron the Protector of the British economy? No."

There's a side of me that kind of agrees with you here.  I can't help but think the seemingly half-assed incompetent appearance on the Ukraine/Syria (and they are certainly connected) foreign policy (and with regard to Russia in it of course) IS THE PLAN.

I have to onder if Kerry and Obama aren't going through the motions to appear to be doing the neo-con bidding Hitlary and that ilk started/continued and left them but in reality they are trying to get the F OUT.  When we see it look like Putin is playing his pieces "like a master"...his moves seem like the only obvious ones to make and the US (as driver of NATO too) are always giving away their next moves way in advance.

It's certainly curious to watch.  Imagine a world where the US/Europe/Russia/China can actually leave well enough alone sometimes and stay out of each business.

Since 2013 and the escalation of Israeli attacks on Syria along the Golan Heights, claiming pursuit of “Hezbollah terrorists,” the UNDOF itself has been subject to massive attacks by ISIS or Al Qaeda’s Al Nusra Front terrorists in the Golan Heights for the first time since 1974, of kidnappings, of killings, of theft of UN weapons and ammunition, vehicles and other assets, and the looting and destruction of facilities. Someone obviously does not want UNDOF to remain policing the Golan Heights.

Israel and Golan Heights Oil

In his November 9 White House meeting with US President Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu asked Washington to reconsider the fact that since the 1967 Six-Days’ War between Israel and the Arab countries, Israel has illegally occupied a significant part of the Golan Heights. In their meeting, Netanyahu, apparently without success, called on Obama to back formal Israeli annexation of the illegally-occupied Golan Heights, claiming that the absence of a functioning Syrian government “allows for different thinking” concerning the future status of the strategically important area.

Of course Netanyahu did not address in any honest way how Israeli IDF and other forces had been responsible for the absence of a functioning Syrian government by their support for ISIS and Al Nusra Front of Al Qaeda.

In 2013, when UNDOF began to document increasing contact between Israeli military and IS and Al Qaeda along the Golan Heights, a little-known Newark, New Jersey oil company, Genie Energy, with an Israeli daughter company, Afek Oil & Gas, began also moving into Golan Heights with permission of the Netanyahu government to explore for oil. That same year Israeli military engineers overhauled the forty-five mile border fence with Syria, replacing it with a steel barricade that included barbed wire, touch sensors, motion detectors, infrared cameras, and ground radar, putting it on par with the Wall Israel has constructed in the West Bank.

Interestingly enough, on October 8, Yuval Bartov, chief geologist from Genie Energy’s Israeli subsidiary, Afek Oil & Gas, told Israel’s Channel 2 TV that his company had found a major oil reservoir on the Golan Heights: “We’ve found an oil stratum 350 meters thick in the southern Golan Heights. On average worldwide, strata are 20 to 30 meters thick, and this is 10 times as large as that, so we are talking about significant quantities.” As I noted in an earlier article, the International Advisory Board of Genie Energy includes such notorious names as Dick Cheney, former CIA head and infamous neo-con James Woolsey, Jacob Lord Rothschild and others.

Of course no reasonable person in their right mind would suggest there might be a link between Israeli military dealings with the ISIS and other anti-Assad terrorists in Syria, especially in the Golan Heights, and the oil find of Genie Energy in the same place, and with Netanyahu’s latest Golan Heights “rethink” appeal to Obama. That would smell too much like “conspiracy theory” and all reasonable people know conspiracies don’t exist, only coincidences. Or? In fact, to paraphrase the immortal words of Brad Pitt in the role of West Virginia First Lieutenant Aldo Raine in the final scene of Tarantino’s brilliant film, Inglorious Basterds, it seems that ‘Ol Netanyahu and his pecker-suckin pals in the IDF and Mossad just got caught with their hands in a very dirty cookie jar in Syria.

More regime change failure in Ukraine

Ukraine is now another Somalia in Europe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&x-yt-ts=1422503916...

http://rt.com/news/nuland-phone-chat-ukraine-927/

Crimea, where most residents are ethnic Russians, refused to recognize the legitimacy of authorities brought to power amid US & EU incited regime change riots during a coup in Ukraine in February 2014.

In mid-March last year, Crimea re-joined Russia following a referendum. More than 82% of the electorate took part in the vote. Over 96% backed splitting from Ukraine and spoke in favor of reuniting with Russia.

Ukraine is dead:  http://thetruthspeaker.co/2015/04/19/10-reasons-ukraine-is-dead/

There’s no one who could make Ukraine one again. There’s no political figure who can unite the former country. No one elected or placed in Kiev could ever win the support of those regions which have broken away, by the very fact of their being connected to Kiev. No political figure would ever be elected in those seceded regions on a ‘united Ukraine’ platform.

There’s simply no one who can make Ukraine one again.

There will be a ‘Ukraine’, whatever that is, in the future. But the ‘Ukraine’, to some simply ‘the Ukraine’ is finished. It’s dead. The sooner those pro-Ukraine accept that, the more lives will be saved, the quicker they can find what, where, ‘Ukraine’ is, after all, and start to build that, rather than destroy whats left of the former Ukraine.

Regime change does not work. It didn't work in Libya, Iraq, Syria or Ukraine. Thanks to the Neocons these are all failed states run by thugs, warlords, terrorists and in Ukraine's case banderist neo-nazis and interpol wanted criminals.

The only thing preventing many Europeans from freezing to death this winter or any winter is Russian natural gas. Europe and Qatar wanted to build a nat gas pipeline through Syria ending Russia's energy influence over Europe. The US wanted Russia's influence over Europe ended. Assad did not support the pipeline so the allies decided he needed to go. Russia said no for obvious commercial reasons. Russia prevailed. Russia doesn't need nukes when they can simply turn a lever on a pipeline and freeze northern Europe to death. The rest of the stuff you read about Syria and Assad is 100% manufactured bullshit to sway the opinion of the average American who still reads newspapers and believes what's in them.

Can't agree with that.

In my view your comments may refer to the American political elites, associated crony banksters and Deep State apparatchiks.

It does not generally apply to many American people who are - like so many people in other countries - good decent folks who show generosity and compassion towards others, especially in times of disasters.

We all need to face reality that our political elites do not fairly represent the views of their own citizens.
