"Let Them Fly There Now": Putin Threatens To Shoot Down Turkish Jets In Syria, Calls Erdogan An Ass Kisser

Tyler Durden's picture

It’s been nearly a month since Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 in what not only represented the most serious escalation to date in Syria’s five year conflict but also marked the first time a NATO member has engaged a Russian or Soviet aircraft in at least six decades.

The “incident” - which came several weeks after Ankara downed what certainly appeared to be a Russian drone - infuriated The Kremlin, setting off a war of words that culminated in a lengthy presentation by the Russian MoD which purported to prove that illicit Islamic State oil flows through Turkey. Both Putin and a number of other Russian officials have implicated Erdogan and his family in the trafficking of illegal crude and there’s speculation that Ankara’s brazen move to fire on the Russian warplane stemmed from Erdogan’s desire to “punish” Russia for disrupting what Deputy Minister of Defence Anatoly Antonov sarcastically called “a brilliant family business.”

As for the Russian foreign ministry, Sergei Lavrov canceled a planned trip to Turkey and Maria Zakharova went so far as to reference Turkey’s infamous political blogger Fuat Avni (a pseudonym) on the way to suggesting that Ankara had been planning to shoot down a Russian fighter jet for at least a month.

In an effort to ensure that the downing of a Russian warplane in Syria was a “one and done” event, Moscow deployed the Moskva off the coast of Latakia and sent in the S-400 air defense systems (which were rumored to have already been in place).

Those moves rattled the US and its partners who fear that a nervous Putin might “inadvertently” shoot down an American, French, or British warplane. Indeed Putin ratcheted up the rhetoric last week. While not detailing 'who' he was focused on, the President told a session of the Defense Ministry's collegium that "I order to act extremely tough. Any targets that threaten Russian forces or our infrastructure on the ground should be immediately destroyed."

Well, in case that wasn’t clear enough, Putin took it a step further on Thursday.

During his annual news conference in Moscow, the Russian President literally dared Erdogan to send Turkish F-16s into Syrian airspace.

As Bloomberg reports, “President Vladimir Putin signaled that Russia is ready to shoot down any Turkish military aircraft that strays into Syrian airspace."

“Turkey constantly violated Syrian airspace in the past. Let them fly there now,” he said, pointing out that Russia’s most advanced air-defense system, the S-400, is covering all of Syria.

(in case the S-400s and the Moskva should prove insufficient, Putin always has the "hands on" option)

"This is the 11th press conference Putin will have with Russian and international journalists during the three terms he has served as head of state," Sputnik notes. "These large press meetings, held once a year, usually last several hours. Almost 1,400 journalists have received accreditation for this year’s event."

As for whether The Kremlin thinks the US was in any way involved in the downing of the Russian warplane, Putin said he wasn't aware of any American involvement, but did suggest (literally) that Erdogan may have been trying to kiss Washington's ass or, in Bloomberg's more politically correct terminology, "Turkey may have been trying to curry favor with the largest member of NATO".

Putin: “If someone in Turkey decided to kiss Americans on a certain body part, I don’t know whether it was right or not."

For the security types, here is a GREAT article from Small Arms Defense Journal on the obvious fact that in the desert terrain, the 7.62 is far superior to the 5.56 NATO round. Great read, great history, great photos

Either of the full power cartridges presumably (51&54mm), but his "far superior" comment applies to range and not weight,so it still depends on one's needs.

I was certain it wasn't the 39 and I did not read the link. Mea culpa.

That said, I went with a piston 7.62x51. Have a bolt heavy barrel as well, same caliber.

Kahler will be in the textbooks. Not just the ground war either, the stunning lack of use of other resources (combat controllers, Delta eg), over-confidence/under-estimation.

As global economies get worse, thanks to the Yanks and their fiat chits called petro-dollars and their fiat-Debts, things will only get worse for all countries.  And thus stripping and prostitution will become more common.  The BRICS and EM CB's who do not repudiate the USD as an organized group (to prevent Divide & Conquer), have only themselves and their 1% Elite and their self-dealing domestic Oligarchs (0.01%) to blame.

If Turkey president is ass kisser to USA, than what is Alexander Lukashenko doing for Putin? Cock-sucker?

Russia under Putin rule reminds of some bully who is disappointed when girls turns away from him and goes with that cool smart guy. Why? Because Russia has nothing that can offer to other states. Just why Turkey should choose poor Russia with it's collapsing RUB when it is member of NATO and has great corporation with EU? Simply there is nothing much outside corruption that Putin can offer. Calling that an ass kissing when one chooses partners from which one can benefit  more is just pathetic... but that is what bully do when looses chance with that beutiful girl. Just to call her a whore and show of as big guy when atcually is a jerk and nothing more. Now Georgia, Ukraine, Turkey simple walks away from that kind of jerk as Russia under Putin rule. That's it.

No one here really knows what is going to happen in spite of all the rhetoric and here say. Looking simply at the situation as it unfolds, Russia has appeal as the military arm of any counter hegemonic force that wants to check NATO. Military isolation of both Russia and China is too far along for either player to sit around and keep waiting. If Putin wanted to sit on his hands and play nice another 5-10 years, he would suddenly realize that Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia would be NATO members with air bases and ABM batteries pointed at Russia.

I have always said that there is not necessarily a good guy here, that is for Hollywood, but it is not Russia who is blatantly pursuing hegemony at the cost of several nations' sovereignty and millions of peoples' lives. That my friend, would be the US. And as you stated, what will the US truly have to offer the world when another military is equally powerful and alternative institutions nullify dollar/SWIFT dominance?

No one is saying Russia has any right to any other country, they do, however, have an interest in countering Nato's expansion. This expansion is a clear provocation and naturally will push the world towards conflict. Hell, all of the new NATO members are being brought in as a speed bump to protect the U.S. Trust me, no one in the U.S. Can even find Ukraine or Molodova in a map, and no one will give two shits if they absorb a Russian or Chinese first strike.

I am sure the EU will also enjoy having new countries on whom shitty debt can be dumped

Turkey was rejected from EU membership (because France objected). Its now stuck between a bankrupt EU, an Iranian power expansion, a Saudi counter-expansion, and a re-emerging Russia. The Europeans of NATO can't even protect themselves, while the US is stretched thin and led by an idiot.

Not saying Erdogan doesn't have lots of issues, but he is a product of Turkey's neighborhood. Back when he was behaving, US/Europe pretty much left Erdogan and Turkey to fend for itself.

That doesn't make his actions right, it just means western "leadership" put Turkey into an impossible situation.

It's a serious situation for NATO now.  Putin is saying that he has complete control of Syrian airspace, and people can only fly there with his permission.  That means that all NATO jets will need to coordinate with the Russians.  In effect, this gives Russia sovereigty over SYRIA.  It's an open admission that Russia controls Syria now ... the ground and the sky.  Whoever controls the sky - controls the whole country.

Yes, Putin is daring Erdogan to stick his tongue on a frozen steel pole.

I am sure that NATO is chafing at this series of developments, but the options for Syria are rapidly dwindling. Putin's problem is that this grand adventure is costing him a lot of money, and he has no return on investment yet.  This forces him to keep moving forwards.

My impression is that the Israelis are very practical.  They can obviously see that a major shift in the power balance in occurring in the Middle East.  My bet would be that Netanyahu tries to find some way to coexist with Putin, although Israel probably does not like the new relationship.  What choice do they have? Israel's problem is tha they have now LOST the opportunity to bomb Iran.  Game over, that option is gone.  There are no constraints on Iran - the country is free to do anything it wants with its nuclear program.  The Iranians can keep their pledge with the trearty, or they can break it completely.  Israel has lost most of its options.  The Middle East will go nuclear, in my opinion.

Lets be honest, Netanyahu can barely tolerate Obama's infantile nonsense. Who knows if Israel wants to befriend Russia or China or Egypt or all three -- but as a matter of practicality: their primary benefactor for the past ~50 years is bankrupt and led by a man who hates the USA even more than he hates Israel.

A year and change from now when Obama finally leaves, the USA's finances are a wreck, our economy is hollowed out, university's are teaching "political correctness" not anything useful in business or war or health. Whomever the next US president is will be forced spend their whole term trying to repair Obama's damage, he won't have time to help Israel no matter what the circumstances.

Putin sees this. So does Netanyahu. So does everyone outside the US media.

The USA spends way too much on "defense", but without it "NATO" is irrelevant. None of the other so-called members spend the required 2% of GDP (already watered down from 3% originally).

"NATO" without the US military is just a target -- ask the Serbs.

And now, the US military has been exhausted scooping up Obama's poop all over Iraq (which Obama was going to leave on his first day in office?), Afghanistan (where Obama declared victory at least three times -- still there), Yemen (disaster), Egypt (supported Mubarak, then called for his ouster, then supported Muslim Brotherhood, then dropped them when CBS reporters got attacked), failures all over Africa that don't make western news, Libya (leading from behind the French??? are you kidding?), Ukraine (failed coup attempt by Obama on behalf of Soros), Syria, the ongoing comedy of the "Asia pivot" (Chinese laughing too hard to attack freedom of navigation stunt).

Too many Americans don't want to admit it, but if Obama were a white man -- the racist media would have torn him to shreds long ago. Instead, they keep making excuses for him. While the democrat party won't admit it, they know Obama is not up to challenging Putin or Endrogan or even Assad.

One on one, I would like to think the US military would scare Russia -- but stretched thin, exhausted by years of leaderless fighting, and led by a moron?

There was a special question about his daughters today. He said they got their education in Russia and live in Russia. Don't do bussiness and do not aim at politics. Also said he's proud of them and their achievements.

It's his private life and he will continue to keep it behind a fence for many reasons, personal security being also one of them.

This is a Putin flaw...of course, he's no different from most men, so it's a flaw he shares with the majority.

Yes, Alina is a lovely girl. She's also about his daughter's age. Which makes the photos where he leers at her kinda creepy.

His ex-wife is a lovely woman. And she looked a lot better with him, more appropriate for a man of his station, dignified.

I'm not surprised Putin avoids appearing in public with the girlfriend...it diminishes him somehow, to be seen as just another middle-aged rich guy having a mid-life crisis. Are there no women in Russia closer to his own age?

Facelifts, botox, probably viagra...c'mon Vladimir, what are you, some kind of American guy or something? Let that girl go and find a boyfriend her own age, and find someone you can grow old gracefully WITH.

Ahh, I guess he's human...but I hate seeing a man like that acting in a way that seems so...common.

My question is what are the Russians and Chinese going to do about the beating the paper price of Au is taking? That they'll probably buy like crazy is obvious, but what will they do to keep the value of their stockpiles from dropping further?

The USD 'strength' can only be illusory, given the stratospheric amount of debt attached to it. They know the rate hike is smoke and mirrors, bunkum for the masses. If Putin's latest international chess moves are a reflection of growing Russian military power, what about the economic engine behind it?

The price in USD is falling, the value (whatever you think it is) isn't changing at all.

Just because some talentless idiot pays $1000 for vapor-ware.dom doesn't mean its actually worth that much -- some people had to learn that the hard way in 2001.

Just because the NY Times tells you Miami condos under construction are a steal at $1.5mm in 2007 -- doesn't mean you won't need a criminal in Washington to bail you out.

Gold may be a barbarous relic (according to a dead economist who got most everything else wrong) -- but the barbarous relic outlasted all the Egyptian pharaohs, all the Roman emperors, all the western european monarchs, all the Myans/Incans/etc, all the Chinese emperors, ... and not for nothing but gold outlasted the stupid twit Keynes as well.

Price does not always equal value -- especially not when corrupt politicians are desperately trying to preserve **their** status quo.

This goes a lot further than Erdogan.

Putin has effectively gained control of Syria - with almost no cost in Russian lives.  He's lost one pilot and one Marine, one jet and one helicopter.  That's it.  In the grand scheme of things ... that's a ZERO cost to Russia.  This move will dramatically strengthen the "Putin clique" inside Russia. Syria has now become the southern boundary of the New Russian Empire.  Russia is now putting a strangle hold - economically - on Turkey.  Obviously, Putin wants a new government in Turkey that is Moscow-friendly.  Ideally, Putin wants Turkey to drop out of NATO and become a willing partner in Russia's future goals.  That would make Syria AND Turkey the new southern boundary of Russia.

I believe there are plenty of folks around these parts who find it difficult to express overt support for Putin due to a lifetime of anti-Soviet and now anti-Russian propaganda. It risks us looking like lefties etc.

But when you step back and look at what's going on in Syria under Western covert action to regime-change the Assad government, the only reasonable conclusion that one can come to is that Putin is virtually the only world leader who is doing the right thing. Our own leaders are guilty of creating the civil war, giving birth to ISIS, recruiting and arming/funding terrorists, destroying yet another country, killing vast numbers of civilians and turning the rest into refugees.

You should be proud that at least some people are supporting what is right.

No jet ever has flown higher than 100000 feet. All rockets launched to "space" do not fly straight up, they bend sideways to finally drop into the ocean. Go look up the evidence. It's sick. The earth is NOT round. Says me, who would lough about such "ridiculous thing", yet here i'm doing it. Wow.

Spaceshipone in 2004 is a farce (330000 feet record allegedly, a lie of course). But in 2014 is 71000feet a record? Inconsistency.

Redbull Baumgartner space jump (128000feet? and over 800miles per hour faster than jet drop?)  A farce, computer movie, except for the final moments with the promoting redbull shute. Liars.
