Caught On Tape: U.S. Senator Issues Dire Warning On Unchecked Executive Power

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

The deliberations of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 were held in strict secrecy. Consequently, anxious citizens gathered outside Independence Hall when the proceedings ended in order to learn what had been produced behind closed doors. The answer was provided immediately. A Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?”

With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

I actually can’t believe I’m writing this, but the following speech from freshman U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R, Neb) is so thoughtful and inspiring, it should be required viewing for all American citizens.

To hear a U.S. Senator sound more like a statesman than a corrupt hack politician for sale to the highest bidder, is such a breath of fresh air I almost can’t believe it’s real. Rather than talking down to voters, he challenges them to become more enlightened, nonpartisan-thinkers with a sense of history. He challenges all of us to shake ourselves from an ignorant, fear-based stupor and reclaim the true genius and beauty at the heart of the American experiment.

Take the time to watch this. The entire thing, and then share it with everyone you know.

"The problem of a weak Congress and executive growth should be bad news to all of us and, more importantly, to every constituent who cast their votes for us under the impression that Congress made decisions - not suggestions. I think the weakness of the Congress is not just undesirable, but is actually a dangerous thing for America."

Thank you Ben Sasse, for proving that there remains a remnant of wise, honorable, decent people in U.S. government.

Finally, while we’re on the topic of executive overreach, here’s what Obama has planned for gun control in the new year...

From Roll Call:

Senior congressional aides and sources in the gun-control community expect the White House to use its executive powers to tighten federal gun laws shortly after President Barack Obama returns from a Hawaiian vacation in early January.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Thursday he anticipates a legal review to continue through the holidays.

Since the deadly shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., White House officials have been, as Earnest has put it, “scrubbing through the law” to determine whether and how Obama can use his constitutional authorities to make it harder for terrorists and other potential mass shooters to legally obtain firearms.

On both sides of the Capitol, sources involved in the guns debate say, as one senior House GOP leadership aide put it, “something is brewing on guns.”

The hot-button issue returned to the front burner of American politics following the lethal Islamic State-inspired California shooting.

Since, however, Republican lawmakers have blocked Democratic measures on stiffening gun laws; and Democrats have kept a mental health bill the GOP has tied to mass shootings from passing, saying they would rather close loopholes in gun laws first.

A recent CNN/ORC poll suggests the American public is siding with GOP arguments. The survey found a majority (52 percent) of those polled oppose tighter gun laws. And a Washington Post/ABC News poll found 53 percent are against the assault weapons ban the White House has endorsed.

“So part of our solution is to consider the range of authorities that are vested in the executive branch to try to advance some of those common-sense policies,” Earnest said. “And we certainly do want to make sure that any sort of steps that the president would take have a strong legal basis in the law.”

So there you have it. A majority of Americans do not want tighter gun laws. Nevertheless, King Obama thinks he know best, and will simply do as he pleases.

This is not what freedom looks like.

Let's make this clear. A great speech it was. Would he dare to give the same speech if a Republican sat in the White House? Of course not! If his team is trashing all freedom, then it's just fine. Same for he silent Democrates now. Freedom is trashed, utter silence!

Fuck both parties. Together over 30 years they have stolen everything and taken all our rights. In the next fiscal crisis, government will reach levels unheard of. And yes, it will be done, no matter the party.

Great speech, bet you would not dare to speak that way about the Bush crime family and their Patriot Act. Obama worse than Bush. Next president worse than Obama and Bush put together. Remember the debates, these guys are ready to come out of the election shooting. And when WWIII gets going, there will be an end to even fake deomocracy.

Jack, As you know the Senate was supposed to represent the states in the national government. That's how a republic works. Well, that ended with the 17th. which also was never ratified correctly. The Statists had plans for a powerful central government funded by a central bank and a taxed citizenry and they didn't want a bunch of unruly states getting in their way. Today a Senator is nothing more than a glorified Representative.

Repealing the 17th would be a very good start at returning state sovereignty and eliminating a lot of this bullshit. But I'm dreaming,,, Americans are interested only in iGadgets and loud trucks.

As a constituent and former supporter of Sen Sasse, I have joined many Nebraskans that already feel betrayed by the good senator whom we feel has sold his soul to the Establishment, and has voted to support and further the Obama agenda, ( along with other republicans), on about every front. If I didn't know better, we have a reincarnation of our unforgettable, Ben Nelson. It seems political betrayal has become common place, and instead of our battles being republican vs democrat, we are now confronted with Washinton establishment vs The People. I admit Sen Sasse talks real nice, he fooled a lot of us during the last campaign.

I'm beginning to think that given the possibly wrong assumption that if there is always going to be a statist vying for head position, statesman or not, you want the smallest possible 'state' to be living under that can defend itself from outsiders.  If you literally cannot make physical contact with your ruler/leader if you so choose, perhaps that is a guarantee you will always be living under tyranny.

Money...Money...Money...PACS...SuperPACS...

It's time to get the money out of Washington.

No Corporation should be able to donate money to a candadate or political party.  Only individuals should be able to contibute and that should be limited to some small amount like $500.

Washington is being bought.  It was slowly at first.  But now it runs into the $Billions.

Until this changes, our elected officials in Washington will be guided by their money backers instead of the people they represent.

Funny thing about the deliberations of The Constitution Convention of 1787...

"They weren’t sent to tear up the articles of confederation and create this mammoth centralized power structure.  Got it?  There already was a constitution.  There already was an arrangement. It worked fine. It needed a little tweaking, nothing more.  When they went there and scrapped the whole thing they did something they had no agency authority to do.  NOBODY, not the people, not the legitimate government of the people, NOBODY Who sent them and who they CLAIMED to represent sent them up there to create a WHOLE NEW FORM OF CENTRALIZED GOVERNMENT..."

"Well let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.  Maybe the proceeding notes and minutes can at least illuminate what went on there even if the discussions themselves were held in secret. Oops, no such thing. They didn’t bother to keep any official record of the proceedings. No minutes taken.  Darn, I hate it when that happens.  All we have to try and piece together what went on there are Mr. BIG GOVERNMENT himself’s personal notes. The other attendees only made sporadic notes about certain issues. So, secret proceedings, no record. Check check.

James Madison took extensive Notes of the proceedings and although some scholars have questioned their authenticity and completeness, they remain the primary source for reproducing the conversations at the Convention.”

So in other words we are put in the position of having to rely on what Nancy Pelosi tells us went on when she met with Harry Reid and the rest of the gang.  Makes sense. This sounds like  the exact kind of arrangement that I would expect to find when agents for “we the people” meet.  Oh and did I mention that even Madison’s  notes weren’t made public for about 35 years. Yeah, that too. So secret meetings, no documentation released to the public, and a group of delegates sent by the people to do one thing who did something else. Yeah, I’m getting that freedom vibe baby."

He talks like Republicans and Democrats are two different parties.  He only needs a cursory review of the current establishments to realize that we have only a single party.  He talks like this consolidation of power is new to him.  His job is politics, correct?  He was interested in politics ( I hope) before he decided to run for office and this has been going on for decades.  His new found epiphany of American politics leaves me somewhat skeptical.

This just begs me to wonder if it is entirely necessary to have a Federal Government in the first place. I think States would do just fine on their own. Now admitting that the Federal Government itself has become a threat to the Union of Soverign state and is just another corporation... like, if the president of Coke got on a stand and began writing executive orders, would the American public give a shit? If, however, the Executive office gave up all but Southern California, DC, Rico, and the so-called Protectorates, including Israel, life would go on pretty normal for the rest of us. We'd all be hunting coon in the back yard for dinner.

The hubris that we need these clown shits in a city-state in the first place is an insult to the American People. What these assholes need to start providing is a reason why they are necessary.

Controlled opposition is better than any real opposition. People will buy any fucking thing and this year is no exception. This Electoral College, this bullshit, it's more about what you carry in your wallet. You carry a talisman in denominations. Fuck all that. IF you are human and have a soul you can see through it and at least, at the very least, follow your destiny and be who you are.

This government is a cancer. It's useless. Interest is useless. The markets are useless. There is no money. There is only your soul to do with as you please if you have one. The dominant specices on this planet is giving it's ass to a few people, killing one another, and trying to get upvotes. The only thing I can do for fun is laugh at you, insult all of you, and say... If you want a job done right, do it yourself. Fuck these Senator Asswipes, the Executive Office, the Congress. They're broken. Have been for a long time. You don't need automatic military weapons for self defense in the US, learn to shoot properly.

People with mental health issues should be restricted, same applies to any criminal conviction that has resulted in jail time.

All firearms owners should be licensed, and should be required to have an approved gun safe as a condition of license.

In other words you can have your firearms but selling your military automatic weapons to your uncles first cousin who has just got out of prison, is on heavy psychotropic drugs, rants about killing his ex continually is considered to be a bad idea, in these cases common sense laws should prevent this.

Probably an unpopular view on this site, but this works in many countries worldwide.

There probably are reasonable grounds to have some controls over gun ownership, although I'm doubtful your suggestions are the right ones for the reasons several commenters state.

One restriction I would support is for anybody under the age of (say 25 or 30) not being allowed to carry a weapon in public. S/he could still own a weapon and use it on private property, just not carry it in public. There may already be regs like this in some states, I dunno.

But the huge point is that those against gun ownership are locked into a paradigm and unable to negotiate on the subject. Banning gun ownership has become a labor of love for these people and there is no compromise. They simply want to disarm America. Period. Obviously Obola is one of those and does his utmost to build the case for it, including false flag shootings to raise the fear levels among obedient muppets. These people are almost without exception big.gov statists and other assorted socialists. In Obola's case, a God-darned Marxist.

But outlawing gun ownership is not the answer. As we all know it simply leaves guns in the hands of criminals with innocent people left defenceless.

Key word: "freshman".

My father was a politician. He sounded like this guy once too, at the start, like the naive and idealistic ones always do. Then I watched over the decades as they got to him, as he learned the only way to survive in Politics, to be broken down into nothing more than a whore and mouthpiece for Corporate Interests.

Decades of observation from the inside, you can't know what I know unless you experience it personally as a politician yourself or as a person very close to one.

Don't get your hopes up, this man will change nothing and will become another whore over time. You may call me cynical, but I call me experienced. People who truly understand politics and power never suffer the indignity of facing an election. You don't know who they are until you're the sucker begging for votes, then the dirty little secrets of reality discover you and your glaring vulnerabilities.

If you're paying any attention to politicians whatsoever, you're missing all the action.

Anybody who is aware of what is coming is gonna need a gun - the 'polls' as usaul are BS - If 53% are in favour, you can guarantee the REAL figure is more like 80-90% !

Its a little late for Poindexter? although I agree with him.. Is this them showing us they CARE??? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?  Throw a "green" freshman at us??? Plenty of piss and vinegar?  If this government passes TPP... The people owe it to each other to destroy this system... It will mean it is no longer is representative of the people, only representative of GREED... WE will need to tare it down.  This is no joke... EVIL rules right now.  GET IT THROUGH YOUR FUCKING HEADS... WE have entered into a darker period of time/history.   Tyrants RULE... We need to rid ourselves of them and their insatiable GREED.  The world agrees American LEADERS ARE SCUM...  Its time to give the EGO BOYs a good fucking taste of HUMILITY!  Our representatives are a DISGRACE!  FUCKING SELFISH, GREEDY... PIGS!!!!   Swine RULES!

We need to take all their pay and benefits, just like they did us... They dont deserve them.  The wealth of this country has almost been completely transferred to GREED/EVIL...Not quite yet, but Its almost over.  They are choking us to death by preventing money from circulating and they refuse to acknowledge it, just like history.  They are basically giving our gold away and there will be nothing we can do to get it back... This is PURE EVIL driving the BUS...  If you understand what it would mean if we have no gold left, then your just starting to understand the level of EVIL involved.  I would love to have our gold reserves audited.

Money and power gives the elite a very false sense of security.  They are ruled by their ego's.  Take the value of their money away and they are NOTHING. Less than 100 people in this country have the same amount of money as the rest of the population? 300 million people... 100 people have more than 300 million people? Think about how perverted that is? FAIR,RIGHT,BALANCED?   We have entered the HEIGHT OF GREED.  It wont be long, it never is.  The guarantee is the 100 people think it has nothing to do with GREED...They insist it couldn't be greed? Which only guarantees it is.  The incoming Freight train is right on schedule.

Did we ever find Germany's gold?  Seems like if they had it, it wouldn’t be that hard to transfer?   Our leaders are scum. Wake up.

If we continue to consolidate wealth... lets say so only 5 people own it all? Is this the right direction? WTF.  Its where we are headed. Is 5 to 10 people in this country with over half the wealth, America? Not Greed?  Good for velocity and circulation..? The elite at this point are trying to hold conflict off as long as they can.  Its in our best interest to start conflict as soon as we can...While we still have some resources??? DUH!!!

Make no mistake this is a war between the classes and if your not in the top 100 your on our side, whether you realize or not. This is TRUTH!  Would you feel entitled to half the wealth of America? I would be embarrassed to take that much, I dont need it to be happy.  Happy, peaceful, humble and FREE! is all I need.   Greed insists its OK... Make no mistake they want it ALL.

Freedom, Liberty and Justice for all?  20 people own everything.. More like The ultimate monopoly with no justice for anyone except the elite.  Tyranny.  Let me know where i can line up to shoot back! I have always been a peaceful person... but there comes a time when there is NO GOOD LEFT

He won't last. To survive as a politician in America you must:

Pledge allegiance to Perpetual War to keep the war profiteers wealthy

Pledge allegiance to the Wall Street bankers who rip off the taxpayers for trillions of dollars with impunity

Promise trillions of dollars of benefits to the Free Shit Army members who are parasites on the taxpayer but are allowed to vote

I miss the days when candidates were statesmen. Instead we have bullies, shock-jocks and elitists, a caricature of humanity running for office. Shameless capitalists, elitist race baters, criminal lizards and crazy hippies now are what we see on the ballot. As Lewis Black said it best that they need to "lie to me better".

Using a theoretical Trump presidency to really talk about the current president Obama.... smart way.

Obama is about the biggest domestic traitor there have ever been. But lawless politicians rule for now.

What extra power the President has comes from Congress. This is what happens when they don't want any responsibility. The Executive Branch will gladly take it.

Well-crafted speech. I don't recall who it was, but a Freshman Congressional Democrat gave a very similar speech in 2003. Nothing changes, except to only get worse. Who are you rooting for? The Demoplicans? The Republicrats? It matters not, and we become the greatest of fools if we "believe in" any of them. Rest asured, Ben Sasse is owned by somebody...they all are.

Wonderful speech.  Nice work.  Maybe someday we'll find a president that will release us from the financial scams of the 1933 bankruptcy and set us free once more.  (Yeah, right.)

Resolving the current situation we have in our Country today, will not be done with words. It is painfully obvious that we have a very disfunctional Government that will never give up power in any peaceful way. Every day the Government gains strength while tha peoples strength diminishes. We are on our way to being "subjects". We know this. What's next?

A Legislature that declines to legislate is not  a legislature in more than name. At best they are pretentious fools, at worst they legitimize abuse under pretense of Law.

A Judicial branch that declines to rule on the actual popularly established laws, such as those passed by 75% REFERENDUM - such as the Constitution - is not a Judiciary, but merely a collection of oligarch pretenders PRETENDING to be judges.

And a President, who makes the Laws rather than enforcing the ones we already have, who sets aside due process at will, who enforces the Laws he likes, and effectively changes the ones he doesn't, is not a President, but a King.
