"Trump Voters Are Not Just Angry - They Want Revenge"

Tyler Durden's picture

Authored by Frank Lutz, originally posted at The FT,

Outraged by what Donald Trump says? You are not alone. No high-polling presidential candidate in the modern era has so intrepidly drawn the ire of so many within the American electorate. And there remains no end in sight.

Yet in rendering one voting bloc utterly apoplectic, he has appealed viscerally to another. The balance of middle ground politics is not, shall we say, Mr Trump’s bailiwick. But America is no longer a middle ground country. We are already scared by our division — and it is getting worse.

The simple truth is, the more provocative his language, the deeper and more passionate his support. He is no dummy; there is a method to his proverbial madness. Mr Trump says — to the growing legions who will listen — what tens of millions of Americans are already thinking. Respect or revile him, the man has hit a vein.

I spent three hours in a deep dialogue focus group with 29 Trump supporters. The phenomenon of “The Donald” is rooted in a psyche far deeper and more consequential than next November’s presidential election. His support denotes an abiding distrust in — and disrespect for — the governing elite. These individuals do not like being told by Washington or Wall Street what is best for them, do not like the direction America is headed in, and disdain President Barack Obama and his (perceived) circle of self-righteous, tone-deaf governing partisans.

Trump voters are not just angry — they want revenge.

Mr Trump has adroitly filled the vacuum of vitriol, establishing himself as the bold, brash, take-no-prisoners megaphone for the frustrated masses. They see him as the antidote to all that Mr Obama has made wrong with America. So to understand why millions love Mr Trump so much, you have to take a step back and listen to why they hate Mr Obama so much.

Here, my Trump voter focus group was particularly illuminating. Some still believe the president is not Christian. Many believe he does not love America. And just about all of them think he does not reflect the values the country was built upon. Indeed, within this growing faction, Mr Trump has licence to say just about anything. As we have seen repeatedly, the more outrageous the accusation, the more receptive the ear.

Mr Trump delights in unleashing harsh attacks on Jeb Bush, the Republican establishment and the “mainstream media”. His childlike joy in ridiculing his critics is tantamount to healing balm for the millions who have felt silenced, ignored and even scorned by the governing and media elite for so long. Is it any wonder that his declaration of war against “political correctness” is his most potent and predictable applause line?

Straight-talking candidates are nothing new in American politics. From Ross Perot in 1992 to John McCain in 2000, from Howard Dean in 2004 to Sarah Palin in 2008, they rise like a rocket on the fuel of their seemingly fresh and unencumbered aversion to traditional politics. They purport to say what they mean and mean what they say — bucking established electoral trends and ruffling established political feathers. Then they crash. The media turn sour. The message grows stale. The electorate gets bored.

Mr Trump is different. The media attacks on him have been fast and furious. Yet he has defied electoral gravity because the blows are delivered by an institution that is distrusted and an elite political and business establishment that is detested.

Meanwhile, voters consistently tell pollsters like me that negative attacks do not work; they hate the ad hominem assaults. Mr Trump? He dines out on them. As his devotees see it, it is not Mr Trump going negative. It is him telling the truth. And when he fights back, he’s throwing punches on their behalf. He said something outrageous? “He’s simply raising an important issue nobody else has the courage to talk about.” He insulted someone? “That’s just him campaigning. He won’t do that as president.” He changed his position? “That was a long time ago. Everyone’s entitled to change their mind.” He doesn’t have many policy specifics? “He doesn’t need them. He’ll surround himself with smart people.” They will justify any action, explain away any contradiction, and dismiss any criticism because they are so personally and passionately invested in him.

And here is the prediction that will furrow brows on both sides of the Atlantic. Mr Trump’s supporters today will be Mr Trump’s supporters next November if he is still a candidate — no matter what party banner he runs under. Half will follow him out of the Republican Party if he breaks his promise and declares as an independent. For better or worse, his supporters will follow him to the ends of the Earth — or to the White House. Whichever comes first.

Trump is doing a hostile takeover of the Republican party. Republican voters are tired of being lied to, of promises that are never kept. So they support him. Good luck, Donald, from a highly educated and informed white collar worker.

He has a history of doing what he says he is going to do. Not always successfully, so he's human. He managed to turn $2 million into billions, speaking openly about his plans along the way. I trust him to keep his promises WAY more than any candidate who is taking money from the Republican establishment. Enough with compromised "leaders."

I don't think any member of the UniParty will keep their promises. And that includes Trump.

Trump can't keep promises made in the heat of running for election.  No politician keeps promises made in the heat of running for election.  If that were a litmus test, all politicians would fail.  Sometimes because they aren't serious, sometimes because they incorrectly judge their ability to get buy-in from congress.

What matters is that if we get an angry, disgruntled, outsider into the presidency with no monetary obligations to the money-machine that makes up the WDC beltway, there will be persistent and continuing pressure to do several things:    dismantle the huge bloat of governmental agencies, dismantle the huge pork machine that eats up so much of the budget, emasculate the machinery of lobbyists and corrupt legislators that keep the system so screwed up.

It is simply not possible for a "normal" candidate to do this.  They can't get into office without huge buckets of cash, and that brings obligations.  Trump is an interesting case - unseen since Nelson Rockefeller (who had neither the same guts nor the same tenacity).  Trump is willing to self fund (yes, much of his wealth was inherited and much is tied to business obligations, so he isn't perfect).  Trump, if he can get into office (realistic or fat chance?) could really dismantle much of the shit that clogs our political sewers.  Sure, he is an unfocused loudmouth, and likely has the intelligence of a turnip, but he is persistent, and he has the cash to push his way to the top, perhaps.  If it happens (I give it less than 10% chance), it will be an interesting ride.  I think he'll piss off a lot of insiders, and I wouldn't sell him life insurance.......

He has a made a lot of 'deals' in the past.  Breaking a deal means instant breaking of trust in business and he does not seem like someone who wants to be hated in the US for the rest of his life.   All the other politicians, with the possible exception of Sanders, are used to lying and cheating and like it.

trust is a fuzzy thing to anyone with his kind of money / power.

doesn't mean he's missed the point, but is does mean we may be creditors, and asked about 'coming to new terms' under his leadership.

at the very least, he's controlled opposition, and a pressure relief valve.

Several reasons:

What makes you think Trump will keep his promises?

  1. He's not Obama.
  2. He's not Hillary
  3. He's not Harry Reid
  4. He's not Nancy Pelosi
  5. He's not the New York Times
  6. He's not CNN
  7. He's not MSNBC
  8. He's not on the social science faculty of ANY college or university.
  9. He doesn't work, live, breathe the air, or drink the water in Hollywood.

Local Savage,
I am amazed that so many have no problem with unsustainable debt, an invasion of 11 million border violating illegals, and the lowest labor participation rate since the 70’s. I am further amazed that clover munching liberals think it is multicultural to fight the enemy over there while bringing them over here at the same time.
We live in strange times, but NOT for long, I suspect. I predict things will get, not better, but more exciting down the road.

I am amazed as well.  The debt has almost doubled in just 8 years and quadrupled in the last 16 years yet so few see this as unsustainable with dire consequences.  Weird, freaky and amazing.

There was an idea that the poll numbers for Trump are way too low.  When a pollster calls, people will not say Trump because of the media spin, but in the privacy of the voting booth, they will in fact vote for him.  Hillery is almost, maybe more, disliked than Obama.  No one is running against Hillery yet.  All the Republican hopefulls are running against each other with just a word or two about Hillery.  When the contest get to be between her and any of the Republicans, we will see a lot more stuff for those who have not listened so far against her.

The study done by MorningConsult is here.  Trump's reported support is understated by about 6% and it is mainly more educated members of the community who do not want to admit to other people that they support Trump.

So it turns out Trump's support is not just "angry white blue collar yobs".

Blacks are not all thugs in the street and welfare single mothers.  They know they have been badly affected by the economic policies of both the Dems and GOPe.  Illegal aliens probably hurt them more than the average white person, both economically and through local violence.  mahommedan attacks threaten them just as much as anyone else.

The same is true for American hispanics.  Trump is likely to blast apart all the Dems comfortable assumptions about having blacks and hispanics nearly corraled on the plantation.

Nassim Taleb author of The Black Swan,  seems to be supporting Trump on Twitter.

Now he's starting to defend the Trump phenomenon, not by outright endorsing him or anything like that, but by going on the attack against his moronic and dishonest detractors. He's also started pointing out how there are lots of folks in polite society who may not be open about their support for Trump, but will confess it after a few Christmas party drinks. A recent poll among Taleb's Twitter followers shows 59% support for Trump, with 46% willing to admit it without having to imbibe any Christmas party drinks. That's 13% who won't be counted in polls if they vote.

His recent efforts to really go to bat for The Donald seem to be related to Putin's favorable words about Trump, and Trump's reciprocation, hinting at a future where America and Russia are closer to being allies than enemies, particularly over foreign policy in the Middle East. Taleb is even more open about his man-crush on Putin, whom he says many Christians of the Levant, like himself, see as a protector of Orthodox Christianity in the eastern Mediterranean.

Revenge can be a slippery slope. I'm not so sure if Trump fans want revenge or not but our media seems to be leading us down a path that could push us into a manufactured conflict similar to what may be beginning to happen in Europe and has happened in the Ukraine.  They put people in a threatened position intending that they become violently reactionary. People want to defend theirs and they should but it will be used against them.

It's obvious when they are trying to force us to take in populations that have a terrorist element among them that they want to start some trouble.  Any reactionary response would likely be the desired outcome.  Hopefully nobody will take the bait. For example, having millions hit the streets to protest the importation of a threat would be ideal as opposed to attacking people once they're here. Of course, this wont happen so people are likely to start to feel powerless and do really stupid shit.

Being reactionary is almost always undesireable, it's best to act and not react.  Not much you can do, you can see it happening but you can't stop it. Stock up on popcorn I guess.

“Trump voters [sic] are not just angry – they want revenge.”

Relax guys, you won’t get revenge with Trump representing you.

He is totally controlled by Judeo-Bolsheviks: doctor, political officers, money-lenders, probably more.

Judeo-Bolsheviks have been destroying civilizations continuously for at least 5,000 years; general plunders and mass genocides to get rid of as many victims and witnesses as possible – so as to give the next victim nation little warning.

This also means that if Trump strays from Tribe directives... well, he knows what will happen.

If you want revenge, you’ll have to learn lessons of American Founders: who, in their capacity as private men, authored the last of three eras that advanced the cause of man.  The other two?  Athens of minus 509 and England 1620-50.

So, sit back, enjoy the fraud, make a note of my information, and check back when it becomes really obvious Trump played Americans for suckers, again.

The Alternative?

The only historically-proven method by which men have ever made tyrants accountable for the lives they have ruined: First-Amendment assemblies – which have been used only three times in all of recorded history: Athens minus 509; England, 1620-50; and the American Revolution.

But , only men who are dedicated to reason and justice can make it happen.

And, you won’t “go out laughing”.

A proscription accompanies every social breakdown: a time when those who asked too many questions or described too many official crimes; or made preparations for the crash are always at the top of the list for elimination.

Your last experience will be dealing with fanatically hungry hordes of homeless or two or three members of Mexican or Columbian drug cartels masquerading as DHS assassins or “tax” collectors.

"...Trump played Americans for suckers, again."

Sure, just read my post, below.  We will see, won't we?

It comes down to trust.  Each American only trusts themselves, 100%, wholly, as President.  So will Trump actually do what he promises?  Will he make America Great Again?  That's really the question here, isn't it?

Which comes down to trust.  You have to trust SOMEONE.  I personally would trust Rand Paul and/or Ted Cruz, but in reality, I believe that Trump is the right man for this MOMENT in time.  Perhaps that makes millions of American voters, suckers, once again.  Okay, so be it.  But next time around, I can promise you, we will not give another President, nor another Congress, nor another Supreme Court (i.e. our 3 branches of government), any more chances.

This. Is. It.

Sun, 12/27/2015 - 18:19 | 6967940 Bazza McKenzie
Bazza McKenzie's picture

And trust is sensibly based on a judgement of character, not what people say.

Trump has been in the public eye for decades, which shows us some things:

  • he is a builder and good at it, and much more efficient than government generally;
  • he makes good business judgements;
  • those who have dealt with him seem to trust and like him;
  • at least commercially he is able to work with both Democrats and Republicans;
  • though he is now a very rich guy, he has mixed with blue collar workers a lot and is comfortable with it as his language indicates;
  • he unabashedly loves America as it was, not as Obama wants it to be;
  • he really, really, really hates to fail.

He is now about 70, so if he does 2 terms will then be almost 80.  Given his current wealth, this is not a step to a meaningful addition to his wealth that will ever matter to him.

So the only thing he stands to get out of it, aside from the satisfaction of a job well done is an enduring legacy.  Like anyone else, he will determine the yardstick for the legacy he wants, and given Trump's values, that is an America that is booming economically (for the country not Wall Street), that is secure and confident, and is strong.

Whether he gets there and what mistakes he makes along the way remain to be seen, but he can be trusted to try to do the best for America in those terms, and he has a far better track record of delivering on his intent than all of his rivals (except perhaps Dr Carson in his medical specialty).

Rand Paul and Ted Cruz accept lobby money. That means they are owned by every corporation, special interest, foreign government and crazy billionaire that has their price. All politicians who accept lobby money are traitors to America and should have a fair trial for treason. Then, if guilty, should hang by the neck until dead. We Americans think our salvation will come from democrats and republicans and we are wrong. Our only hope for salvation is ourselves.

What will propel Mr. Trump to the WH will be the economic disaster currently unfolding across the country .  Its not just the PC correctionalism voters and non voters alike are rebelling against but the outsourcing of the countrys management to a handful of corporations who have worked on both sides of the isle. And  true to form , Republican neocons and Democrat neoliberals, who have turned this into a defacto one party system  jointly pass a trillion and a half budget, on top of everything before,  without batting an eyelash. Even our great great grandchildren will be unable to pay for this madness.

Mr Trump we know who and what he is. Those other billionaires, those shadows on the wall of Platos cave, have circled the wagons, along with their puppets in the DNC and RNC  with them. Years of washington patronage careers and retirment packages  revolving door appointments along with them  has resulted in an understandable frenzy, a pooling of resources to assure a defeat, by any means necessary. Their survival depends on it. What the MSM don't understand is that one does not need a college degree (something they curiously repeat..as if to say what?)to understand that the old soundbytes and feigning of shock at Trumps remarks simply do not work. Trump has pulled the curtain on the stage down, and the audience..his audience..a growing audience..can see all the way back to the brickwall of the stage.

I wish him good fortune..and success..our survival as citizens and taxpayers depends on it too.

Trump has spent less than $500,000 to this point, a lot of it on shirts and hats, I imagine. Compare that to the tens of millions that the Bush campaign has spent, then contemplate their standing in the polls. The more Bush spends, the worse he seems to do.

The political marginal utility of more cash is plummeting. Trump is already taking down the establishment, and all they have to throw at him is money. He has truth to throw back at them, and Republican voters are loving the sound of impact. Trump leads by a wide and growing margin for a reason.

I can agree with you about the problems and the followers, but what makes you think Trump does?

That is the problem.  Trump doesn't have a track record, it is a sequence of sound bytes.  We know less about Trump's real views than we knew about Obama's.

But we know he covered up 9/11 with the "Dancing Muslims" statement, and that the Israeli-Neocon moneybags crowd pronounced him good and that MSM could not possibly be more helpful to Trump.

Add to that the fact that Trump cannot possibly win a general election, not even against Hillary Clinton, who would be by far the easiest for a Republican to beat.  Trump makes people dislike him, the other side of his charm.  Women don't like him much. He will not wear well on the campaign trail, he is not a plausible candidate.

Not to say he might not be, just that it is only in the oligarch's interest if they need to stop the Libertarian party in the general election, Trump would pull away the seriously-disaffected from the party that would really threaten the Status Quo, military, etc.

TRUMP!!!!

Why So Much Jewish Fear and Loathing of Donald Trump? Professor Kevin MacDonald October 29, 2015

Trump’s statement on Muslim exclusion Professor Kevin MacDonald

It’s no surprise that a wide range of Jewish groups , including the Israel Policy Forum (which oddly doesn’t recommend Muslim immigration to Israel), were outraged:

“A plan that singles out Muslims and denies them entry to the U.S. based on their religion is deeply offensive and runs contrary to our nation’s deepest values,” the Anti-Defamation League said in a statement Monday evening hours after Trump, a real estate billionaire and reality TV star, issued his call.

“In the Jewish community, we know all too well what can happen when a particular religious group is singled out for stereotyping and scapegoating,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL’s CEO. “We also know that this country must not give into fear by turning its back on its fundamental values, even at a time of great crisis.”

It’s interesting that quite a bit of the motivation for the 1924 immigration cutoff was because of the common perception (and reality) that Jewish immigrants in particular were sympathetic to communism and the far left — attitudes that were entirely mainstream in the Jewish community of the era, at a time when Bolshevik brutality was on the minds of informed people throughout the West, and when Jewish organizations had their hands full trying to counter the image of the Jewish radical.

The 1924 law, of course, did not specify Jewish groups, but called for an immigration moratorium in general. So if singling out a group offends people’s “basic values” — even if singling them out is entirely rational — perhaps a more palatable idea would be to cut off immigration completely. Pretty obviously, US immigration policy has nothing to do with economic needs (for one thing, it never slowed down at all during the recent recession), but is rather intended to increase non-Whites at the expense of the White population. But of course, Jewish groups would be even more outraged at cutting off immigration completely.

Make no mistake about it, if Trump is nominated, there will be an unprecedented bombardment of propaganda against him that will make the 1964 anti-Goldwater campaign look tame by comparison. But, given the steadily falling White percentage of the electorate (definitely a design feature of the current policy), this may be the last chance for Whites to elect a president who represents their interests. I suspect that quite a bit of the Republican Jewish Coalition money will actively support Hillary, and others will sit on their hands. Not only are Trump’s declarations on immigration and refugees anathema to them, he has not toed the neocon lines on Syria, the Iraq war, or Putin. His speech at the recent RJC forum (where he also deviated from Israel Lobby positions on Israel’s supposed commitment to peace with the Palestinians and placing Israel’s capital in Jerusalem) was basically a statement to the effect that “I don’t need your money; I am way ahead in the polls, so get used to it.” To put it mildly, the RJC is not used to such chutzpah. The unprincipled Marco Rubio, who will do anything for their money, is much more acceptable.

Trump is calling into question the entire worldview that pervades our hostile elites. And that is unforgivable.

If its supposedly a Trump policy and you aren't hearing it from Trump, it's just speculative gossip.

"Some still believe the president is not Christian."

If you judge people by their actions and not their words, then barry is definitely not a Christian.

If wanting to reinstate and enforce things like border controls, Glass-Seagall, and lawful Constitutional self-government run by public servants, while wanting to repeal things like Obamacare, TPP, TBTF banks, ending foreign wars and the cult of jackboot political correctness is REVENGE, then where the fuck do I sign up?

No surprise these simple ideas are selling like hotcakes. The only unlimited sovereign authority of the USA is 300 million people. The 2nd Amendment isn't just a Natural and Constitutional right, it's a call for vigilance.

These sniveling degenerates in both parties. I hope Trump runs as an independant. The president weilds near dictatorial power. He doen't need to build any consensus with these dirt bags.

I hate to say it, but only open, armed revolt, perhaps aided by a disenfranchised segment of the miltary, will change things.

Enough Independent votes, it gets thrown into the House! Enough of us show up, Trump gets the Pump! He vanquishes the two bushes, Shrub II and Adolf Hitlery!

We get OUT of the ME and Ukraine! We get rid of the Ziocons and go back to Free Trade and bidness.

We can wish!

This will not get me many greenies but the unavoidable questions for Trump will be whether he rolls back the Bush/Obola obnoxious anti-liberty laws and executive orders, the systematic attacks on the 1st & 2nd Amendments, the DHS, NSA and the gathering police state? Plus a whole bunch of other vile stuff intended to turn America into a socialist police state.

He might say he will, but will he/can he do it? Candidates promise the earth before elections and deliver very little afterwards. Sometimes what they deliver is the opposite of what they promised.

When they win and walk in the front door, the countless alphabet agencies go to work and explain why this or that cannot be repealed for whatever reason. National Security is usually a good excuse. Over the weeks/months they strip away any reform agenda to the point where little or nothing changes.

Think what Obola promised and what he has delivered.

I was wondering why the GOP field remains so crowded, like vultures waiting patiently for opportunity?  Is it that they they know, upon information or belief, that Donald can never be selected as the GOP candidate?

It seems that Biden et all on the Democratic side understand this, and that it is Hillary that holds the power. Of course there have to be a few token candidates like Bernie and what's his name for appearances.

The problem with Trump is: he supports Israel.

Yeah, that's absolutely the biggest problem facing the US.

Incidentally, which of the candidates on either side does not?

None, they are all a bunch of israeli grundle lickers.

Ironically it might be Bernard who supports Israel the least, but when punch comes to shove he will in the end.

If you don't support israhel you don't get money

If you don't get Jewish support the media will insure you are marked a racist or a sexist

If you keep doing well, they will try and frame you or your family

If you get into office, by some miracle from heaven, they will shoot you in the head on national TV and dare anyone in authority to say something.

Its over, they control Washington, the Pentagon...Walk around DC, they own the place, and that is not an exaggeration, just like Wall Street and Hollywood.

The only way to beat them is to become just as evil and ruthless as they, and honestly, it really not in our nature.

You are making your hyperbole just a tad too obvious.
