Mapping China's Hilarious European Stereotypes

Tyler Durden's picture

To many in the Western world, China is still something of a mystery.

Even as Xi works to liberalize the country’s capital markets, promote the yuan in international trade and investment, and generally open the country’s doors to the world, it’s still a strange, foreboding place in the eyes of the Western public.

Tales of censorship, “disappearing” journalists, and endemic corruption don’t help, and neither does the ambiguity inherent in attempting to run a communist state with a semi-capitalistic economy.

Of course this is a two-way street. That is, the West is something of an enigma for many Chinese as well.

For those wondering what comes to mind for the average Chinese web surfer with regard to nations in Europe, we present the following map from Foreign Policy who “plotted the most common Chinese-language Baidu query for each European nation.” Highlights include "likes to fight" for Russia, "why doesn't it annex Portugal" for Spain, and "beautiful women" for Ukraine.

From Foreign Policy:

This provides a glimpse into how Chinese netizens view the peoples and countries of Europe — a continent whose industrialization once both humiliated China and inspired its admiration, and that has loomed large in the country’s imagination ever since.

The ghosts of the past haunt Chinese queries for many countries. Chinese netizens ask why France and Poland can’t beat Germany — though vague phrasing and the Chinese language’s lack of verb tenses admittedly mean these might just be soccer questions, which also appear frequently in search results about World War II. (Those Belgian red devils? That has been thecolloquial name for Belgian soccer players since 1906.) There is no ambiguity about Italy: Netizens ask why that nation was not subjected to the same postwar criticism as Japan and Germany. Britain’s role in the Opium Wars, the successive 19th-century conflicts that forced China to grant territorial concessions to European nations, comes up. And for Germany, references to killing and hating Jews topped the search suggestions, though another top query, “Why do Germans still hate Hitler?” indicates a modicum of balance.

Quirks of European political divisions and territorial boundaries also arouse Chinese curiosity. There is considerable confusion about who does and does not belong to institutions like the European Union and the eurozone. The political status of parts of the British Isles is an object of intense interest to China’s online community, which asks about the independence (or the lack thereof) of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Netizens also ask why German-speaking Austria does not unite with Germany, and why Italy and Spain do not respectively annex the Vatican City and Portugal.

some of these are pretty accurate in my experience

Russia and Ukraine, most so... Chinese think old Soviet ethnicities are basically angels... anything from around the bloc, even. tons of Poles in China, who are barely above average (face... so still gotta be tall, skinny) can easily be models in China.

France one is pretty good, too... especially with Chinese in Canada, they can't understand why Canada allows so many refugees and the strongest anti-refugee social media I've seen has actually been from Chinese (living in Vancouver)... some Chinese are pretty racist against blacks, too... not hate blacks (love basketball, hip hop) but some Chinese think blacks are still a little bit ape.

the German ones too... a lot of Chinese respect Hitler. Hitler and Putin, fittingly, are both seen as great leaders because, no matter if what they do is good or bad, evil or lawful, a lot of Chinese still respect that at least they're 'strong' -- China has a very competitive nature about survival, so most Chinese that I've talked about this think Hitler is evil and should be despised, but unlike Westerns also have no qualms about appreciating his strength and leadership.

dunno about the rest, really. Netherlands I can understand but haven't really any anecdotes about it. the Italian one too makes sense and probably sounds like something a lot of my friends would say but can't say I've heard it.

Dangerous moral ambiguity. Though psychologists have noted that conservative-leaning individuals, in particular, tend to prefer a negative identity over a perceived "weak" one.

This is something that those people bitching about cats don't understand, once the number of cats goes down the number of rats esculates. Having too many rats is extremely dangerous for numerous reasons.

If you are looking for a companion, you should generally choose one that doesn't eat its own shit.

Sat, 01/02/2016 - 04:59 | 6987510 kareninca
kareninca's picture

I'd rather have one that eats its own shit (a dog) than one that can infect me with toxoplasmosis (a cat).  Besides poop eating is a major reason that dogs have become human companions.  In primitive societies, about 80 percent of dog caloric intake is human feces.  They clean the area, and prevent the spread of disease.  Admittedly that is not needed here and now, but you never know about the future.

Sat, 01/02/2016 - 12:08 | 6988125 BarkingCat
BarkingCat's picture

That's useful only for those who are too stupid to burry their own feces..

...and if dogs eat human feces what happens to their feces??? With mamals there is an input and also an output. In other words, you still have ton of shit.

Sat, 01/02/2016 - 20:24 | 6989491 kareninca
kareninca's picture

It's more complicated than that.  Imagine a rural preindustrial village (they still exist), with little kids running around the place without diapers.  And adults with dystentery.  You can say that these people should bury it all, but they didn't in ages past, and they don't now.  Try tracking all the poop down and finding it.  Try making diapers out of leaves (it doesn't work).

Having a scavenger consume human poop means the difference between germs everywhere and relative cleanliness.  Dogs' guts are hugely more able to kill germs than human guts are (that's why they can safely eat germy stuff that would kill us); there is no comparison.  Humans feces that they eat come out with a lot of the microbes killed.  You still have dog poop around, but it is much safer (to humans) than the human poop.  And other dogs will keep eating the dog poop, and killing the germs in that (and also removing nutrients and making it less bulky and messy).  It is true that this system is not now needed by us, but it is an important part of human evolutionary history (and is still relevant in some places).

Those gangs in your link will have white guys in them to if they're from the area.

Oh, you mean Eurabia, right? Where used to live the peoples who, a long long time ago, colonized most of the world and waged a bunch of world wars between themselves and crap like that? Then they decided to self immolate, in a vain attempt to expiate their many sins, while the world's brown people overran their open borders and erected yet another Islamic shithole?

With the highest per-capita debt load on the Planet, I'd not be that surprised if the US of A was the first to go. There is a LOT of internal dissatisfaction there, and the potential for a real "breakdown of civilisation" moment is most certainly there. The Ferguson event was just the entree - the underlying problems have NOT been addressed, and so dissent continues to foment.

There may well be civil conflict in Europe too, but there are also "certain countries" who would directly benefit from a publically - initiated cleaning-out of the pro NATO ruling elite, countries that have a very long and impressive track record of co-operation with Europe, rather than simply regarding Europe as a convenient "unsinkable aircraft / troop carrier"

THAT is actually very interesting indeed: If the data are correct, and the Chinese "person in the street" does regard Turkey as opposing China, then the seeds may have already been sown for "facilitating" more Chinese involvement in the ME, especially in support of their new best friends - Russia.

Rallying a populace that already is at least distrusting of Turkey would be a far, far easier task than rallying a populace that was openly "pro-Turkey".

Maybe this is a strategic plan - after all we all should be aware by now that the Chinese supreme command play the long game, as does Russia.
