To many in the Western world, China is still something of a mystery.
Even as Xi works to liberalize the country’s capital markets, promote the yuan in international trade and investment, and generally open the country’s doors to the world, it’s still a strange, foreboding place in the eyes of the Western public.
Tales of censorship, “disappearing” journalists, and endemic corruption don’t help, and neither does the ambiguity inherent in attempting to run a communist state with a semi-capitalistic economy.
Of course this is a two-way street. That is, the West is something of an enigma for many Chinese as well.
For those wondering what comes to mind for the average Chinese web surfer with regard to nations in Europe, we present the following map from Foreign Policy who “plotted the most common Chinese-language Baidu query for each European nation.” Highlights include "likes to fight" for Russia, "why doesn't it annex Portugal" for Spain, and "beautiful women" for Ukraine.

This provides a glimpse into how Chinese netizens view the peoples and countries of Europe — a continent whose industrialization once both humiliated China and inspired its admiration, and that has loomed large in the country’s imagination ever since.
The ghosts of the past haunt Chinese queries for many countries. Chinese netizens ask why France and Poland can’t beat Germany — though vague phrasing and the Chinese language’s lack of verb tenses admittedly mean these might just be soccer questions, which also appear frequently in search results about World War II. (Those Belgian red devils? That has been thecolloquial name for Belgian soccer players since 1906.) There is no ambiguity about Italy: Netizens ask why that nation was not subjected to the same postwar criticism as Japan and Germany. Britain’s role in the Opium Wars, the successive 19th-century conflicts that forced China to grant territorial concessions to European nations, comes up. And for Germany, references to killing and hating Jews topped the search suggestions, though another top query, “Why do Germans still hate Hitler?” indicates a modicum of balance.
Quirks of European political divisions and territorial boundaries also arouse Chinese curiosity. There is considerable confusion about who does and does not belong to institutions like the European Union and the eurozone. The political status of parts of the British Isles is an object of intense interest to China’s online community, which asks about the independence (or the lack thereof) of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Netizens also ask why German-speaking Austria does not unite with Germany, and why Italy and Spain do not respectively annex the Vatican City and Portugal.

China is not a mystery. All one needs to do is live there 3 years or more and learn a little bit of the language.
Chinese are ignorant, racist, xenophobic, superstitious peasants who have money. They only care about money and food. Their values have been passed down generation to generation for at least 1500 years and possibly 3000 years and beyond the mists of known and recorded history. Mao has nothing to do with them being horrible human beings.
Their attitude about Vatican City and Portugal are completely unsurprising to me. To the Chinese Bigger=Better and Might makes Right and the ability to take a neighbour means a moral duty to do so.
If you think that the British Empire was bad, or that the Americans are bad, just you wait and see how the Chinese behave in the coming decades.

1) In the 19th century the Royal Navy would impress seamen of other nationalities into the service of the Royal Navy.
2) The British Army, to put down a revolt in India, tied the revolutionaries to the muzzle of a cannon and fired a 12 pound ball through them to the amusement of the onlooking Brits in India who were starved for entertainment.
3) In the Royal Navy, the punishment for striking an officer was"flogging 'round the fleet." The guilty seaman would be strung up in a long boat and flogged with a 'cat o' nine tails' whilst the long boat was rowed up and down the columns of ships as they lay at anchor. All the men on all the ships were required to watch the flogging as it was rowed by. Hours after the prisoner had died, he was still being rowed and flogged for the benefit of the men in the last ships of the fleet.

If you want to build a successful empire you need to convince your own population that the government representing them is altruistic. Once your people are chugging down the kool-aid it's easy to convince them to support overseas conquest, or intervention as is fashionable to say these days. And hey, as long as the money keeps flowing no one really cares.

There was a point in time where China was a naval power and quite a land force. They stayed in their own neighbourhood and did not sail to conquer foreign lands.

Yes, and the Chinese naval experiment ended in disaster before they really got established long term. As for the land forces, they were quite busy fighting amongst themselves, as well as protecting the northern borders and expanding towards and in the Tarim Basin, not to forget the tribals in the south. China is massive though, has been for the last 2000 years, and as a result most of their history is a struggle within. Economic incompetence and an inability to properly organize the central government due to the sheer size of the empire were a constant source of strife.

-Every year someone in Guangzhou loses it and kills an African over a taxi fare or such. The body is taken to the police, cremated ''in accordance with the foreigners national traditions'' within hours and shipped out of country. Always it is 'they had a medical episode and sadly died'. Then the authorities remind everyone to not kill the foreigners.
-In 1900 the Empress issued an order that all non-Chinese were to be killed. This was during the Boxers, but before the 8 nation alliance invaded. They invaded because killing their citizens did not agree with them. Makes sense, yes? I lived in a city where the locals admired the Boxers who rounded up foreigners in my area to have them executed.
-The Chinese refer to all foreigners with a racist slur, constantly. As in you hear the word ''nigger'' 30 times a day, every day you are in public, for years and years. The Chinese will also tell you to your face that Chinese are not racist.
-The Chinese will press a relative into service to earn money just because they are older and the stupidity of Confucius, KongZi, philosophy. Force people to take a college degree and job they hate. Ship middle school students to another province to earn money to send home 70%, live in a hovel with 7 other family slaves, and eat $1noodles for eternity. It isn't respect for elders - it is a means of selfishly jusftifying mom and dad getting their way. The only reason young people put up with it, is that in a few decades they will have someone to push around and do what they demand.
-They will open businesses, never do any business with non-Chinese, and send the money back to China. Any money you spend on a Chinese contract, not one Euro will go to the local economy. It goes back to China or is spent only between other Chinese.
Chinese culture is total bullshit. I will never go back, I avoid all Chinese products forever, and I shall never eat in any Chinese restaurant on this planet ever again.
I don't eat in Chinese restaurants because the Chinese are not clean. While the Japanese are hygiene freak, the Chinese are the opposite.
