This Is A Very Troubling Chart

Tyler Durden's picture

The chart below, showing the total number of monthly FBI firearm background checks - a direct proxy for gun purchases in the U.S., needs no commentary.

Here is the same data, on a monthly basis to avoid the seasonal noise. No matter how one looks at it though, the 3.3 million background checks in December was a record high.

Neither of these are the "troubling chart" referenced in the title. This one shown below is, and it comes courtesy of the NYT:

The chart shows that while the soaring gun sales are the effect, the cause is simple: president Obama.

The same president who tomorrow at 11:40am will finally reveal just what, after many delays, his executive action(s) on gun control will be.

The concern is that with one more year under Obama's term, gun sales over the next 12 months are certain to surge to new all time highs as Obama's crusade to crush the second amendment slowly picks up steam in order to cement his "anti-gun" legacy, and as the population rushes to buy as many as it can before Obama makes such purchases illegal.

It's not all bad news though: gun makers could not have asked for a better president, as the following headline just confirmed:

  • SMITH & WESSON SEES 3Q ADJ. EPS 39C-41C, SAW 27C-29C

As of this moment Smith and Wesson is trading at an all time high.

Not troubling at all... in fact, quite encouraging.  It shows that more and more of the plebs are getting ready for the inevitable fireworks when the tyrannical Federal Government attempts a final crackdown on all of our remaining liberties.  Go NRA!

I am not troubled, in fact I am going to do my duty and add to this background check number tomorrow after work.  I do not need a .380 pocket pistol, but i am going to pick one up anyways.

I didn't like the recoil of the Ruger .380.  But then in a life or death situation recoil will not matter.  You might consider a Bersa .380 CC.  Always have mace as an option.  Be sure to get hollow point ammunition and maybe a second magazine.  Gun control ='s hitting what UR aiming at.

I'm not sure what's troubling about the People arming themselves,

Unless you think the People, and not the Government, is the biggest threat to your freedom.

I've always had Hunting rifles, occasionally through the years I had various pistols, but for the last decade or so only owned rifles and a shot gun.

A couple weeks before Black Friday I suggested to the Wife we buy each other pistols for Christmas on Black Friday. I told her I thought the chances are growing we won't be able to buy one in the near future.

She was skeptical, and didn't think it was necessary. Then there was another mass shooting days later and Obama declared he was going to do something about the guns.

She came home that night on board and told me to find two affordable guns. Black Friday morning came and we were in line at Academy Sports getting our background checks, a S&W SD40, and an SD9.

Thank You Obama!

I've carrried a .380 Colt Mustang for over 10 years, but have reliability issues with it.

Last year bought 2 Kimber .380s, one for self, one for wife. we both love em.

(bought and quickly sold a Ruger), love the mini-1911 format of the Colt/Kimber.

(In a country with strict gun control, very concealable.)

I suggest the Ruger LCP custom....  the trigger is definitely fruity looking, but it's got a few upgrades you'd probably be doing anyway at a fraction of the cost from the factory.  Add some hard to find 7 round magazines, hogue grip, and heavier spring and you've got something that's shootable.  All in, fully upgraded, you're probably looking at $275...  nothing on the market (other than the keltec) has the same small footprint.  If you go even slightly bigger, you're venturing to the boundaries of a pocket carry (mouse) gun.  At that point, I would suggest not dicking around and just getting a compact and holster.

It's a "bad breath" range gun...  if you're shooting past 10 yards, then you should probably be running the fuck away instead.

Also, choose your ammo carefully in a 380 mouse gun.  http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#380ACP and http://shootingthebull.net/blog/final-results-of-the-380-acp-ammo-quest/

You'll want range ammo that isn't remotely hot...  the thing will eat anything, but hotter rounds may unnecessarily wear it out quicker and start walking out your pins.

Thanks MachoMan, I agree. Mine is close, waiting for the Hogue, I've got 280 into mine, the extra mags I had to get from Ruger, long wait. I got tired of shopping and the Ruger works fine for what I wanted it for, so far anyway.

I agree about the ten yards. We also need to be prepared to defend our stance in court. If we shoot somebody out at 50ft., the judge is going to want to know why.

Great links

I haven't shot the Kel Tec 3-AT but I have shot the Ruger.  The Ruger IMO is a piece of shite.  Beyond 20 feet you might as well throw the gun.

I would recommend you spend a little more and get a Walther or Sig P238.  I can empty the clip of the Sig at 50' and have a 5" pattern.  I think that's pretty good for such a small weapon.

Beyond 20 feet it's not really self defense unless they have a gun pointed at you.

Nobody claimed they are target pistols.

Mine right out of the box after I field stripped it twice for practice surprised the hell out of me how easy it is to aim.

Practice a little more. Look at Hogue grips if the recoil bothers you or a shoot through holster.

If you want to target practice, buy a high standard 22.

That happens, you know. A gun that can't help you deal with that situation is far more limited than it should be.

I highly recommend both of you read up on the "Tueller drill".  If you have someone within 20 feet of you that charges you with intent to kill you while your pistol is holstered, you very well could be really fucked.

I've seen some of those video's Sarge. Scary stuff.

I don't swear the little mouse gun will stop a cranked up perp, but  ccp means having something with you all the time. The keltec weighs 10oz. loaded, the Ruger around 14 oz. loaded. It puts the concealed in concealed carry. Someone can always invent a scenario where you didn't have enough protection with them, look at Seal team 6. I didn't want to pack my heavier guns walking, so I got this.

I almost got a keltec but purchased the LCP .380 instead. I thought I would hate shooting it, turns out it's surprisingly accurate, reliable and fun. Need more bullets.

The keltec has an almost cult like following. The one I did find had a crack in the polymer, I'm sure they don't all. No safety mechanism on either of them.

I really (used) love my Kel-Tec P3AT, which is just a Ruger .380.  BUT after doing some stress fires, I found something that concerned me, (almost) a deal breaker.  I would hit the mag release button and cause a failure to feed (FTF).  Not once, but every. single. time. Until I get moar hammer time, it will be a last resort weapon, a back up gun.  It is shame, I used to go jogging every night with it and I couldn't even tell it was there.

Now it is the Sig 239 in 40 Slow and Weak (S&W), bought the .357 barrel for ~$150.  Same mag's, much more penetration (through a Suburban windshield and all the way to the 3rd seat). Practice w/ the 40 S&W, and for life, property and liberty .357.

A lot of people will give you shit about a single stack 40 (easy to conceal), but fuck 'em.  What ever you feel comfortable with is better than nothin'.

I could envision a future president making a proclamation to the effect that all young persons - male & female, of the age of 7 and older, be taught the proper care and Use of a firearm, and that all legal citizens purchase and keep at the ready, 1 firearm or more as needed or required for a family.    Not a 'mandate' mind you, but a simple proclamation buttressing the founding precepts and tenets that forged the nation, while encouraging the citizenry to do its part in maintaining that spirit.

Criminals will ALWAYS have access to weapons. Your argument is the same as that of dictators : prevent the population ( non-criminal ) to buy legally arms so that no "accidents" can happen. Belgian statistic : out of every 50-odd gun-deaths per year, 47 are caused by the use of ILLEGAL arms. 2 are suicides. 1 is by a legal arm. And there are an estimated 2 million fire-arms in Belgium. Cars are far more deadly, politicians know that a long time but they are ( for very good reasons ) getting afraid of their law-abiding citizens who are growing ever more fed-up by the driveling, lies, idiotic taxes, failing justice, failing police force, intimidation and large-scale corruption by and of said politicians.

The first two charts are inspiring but the third is very concerning. The number of checks appears to be far above the actual sales by year. At a guess it appears either people are buying multiple guns at the same time or a much larger number of people are being denied during their background check which would account for the lower sales volume. That check is essentially a formality and hassle, as most disqualified people know in advance they cannot pass that check. So I'm left wondering if the process is being used to target and frustrate political adversaries.

Checks are also done for those applying for or renewing carry permits. Also, in most states it's one check for one or more purchases at FFLs.
