"It's Time For You To Leave": Oregon Sheriff Demands Militiamen "Peacefully" Depart

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite Ammon Bundy’s best efforts to explain the motives of the militiamen who over the weekend seized control of a remote federal building in Oregon, it’s still not entirely clear why several dozen US citizens decided to occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

WaPo is probably correct to say that there "are gun rights issues, religious overtones, broad strains of anti-government sentiment and even the tactics of the Occupy Wall Street movement" at play, but like the Occupy movement, those holed up in the snowy government outpost have yet to articulate a coherent set of grievances to justify their cause.

As we outlined on Sunday, Ammon Bundy is the son of Cliven Bundy, a kind of folk hero at the heart of a 2014 standoff with the government that ended with what some say was a victory for individual and state’s rights.

Apparently, the younger Bundy is attempting to engineer another direct conflict with federal authorities by rallying around the “cause” of Dwight Hammond and his son Steven, who were sent back to jail on Monday for arson.

Bundy and the rest of the militiamen (who say they're "in it for the long haul" and who have named themselves the "Citizens for Constitutional Freedom") camped out at Malheur have indicated they’re prepared to fight should the government move to forcibly remove them from the wildlife refuge and at least one American is calling for “shoot to kill” orders for the National Guard.

In what may perhaps mark the beginning of open hostilities between authorities and the militia, Harney County Sheriff David Ward politely told the group that “it’s time to leave” on Monday.

"You said you were here to help the citizens of Harney County. It is time for you to leave our community, go home to your families, and end this peacefully,” Ward said, on behalf of himself and county Judge Steven Grasty.

As Reuters explains, “the Oregon occupation marks the latest skirmish in the so-called sagebrush rebellion, a decades-old conflict over federal control of millions of acres of land and natural resources in the West.”

Bundy insists the militiamen are “patriots,” but Wendy Bull, a teacher in Burns whose husband, a social worker, operates a local clinic run by the U.S. Veteran Affairs Department, says the men are “domestic terrorists.” As Reuters goes on to note, “the takeover in Oregon [has drawn] criticism on social media, with some users asking if the occupiers would have been treated differently if they had been black or Muslim.”

BBC got an inside look at life inside the compound. “When we arrived in darkness all was calm and quiet,” columnist James Cook begins. “We were greeted courteously by men carrying copies of the US constitution, who told us they were unarmed.” Here’s more:

They had draped the US flag over a sign at the entrance to the wildlife refuge and they offered us a cup of coffee.

The guards told us that the armed men inside were not taking visitors at present but would be happy to come out and meet the media face to face in the morning.

One of the men tried to give me a small US Fish and Wildlife Service sign from the building "as a souvenir".

"It's mine," he said, "I paid for it," making a reference to his taxes.

Some people in the community around the town of Burns say while they do not approve of the methods, they are in tune with the sentiment.

Back at the bird reserve, the mood changed slightly as the day dawned, the birds started singing and the winter sun struggled to pierce the hazy clouds.

The media were now at the gate in force and the men there were more reluctant to talk.

"We need to stick to the narrative," one told us as he explained why we needed to wait for their leader Ammon Bundy.

Down a slight hill, we could now see the headquarters clearly, the red roofs of the sheds standing out against the snow.

Several dark-clad figures moved around in the complex.

When Mr Bundy emerged to speak to the media he refused to tell me how many people were inside the bird sanctuary or how many were armed but, after the news conference, camera crews were given a limited tour of the site.

We were told we would not be shown anything relating to "operational security" or anything that would "put lives at risk" and, indeed, we were kept away from any weapons on the site.

A number of US government vehicles sat in the car park, covered in snow.

We were not allowed into most of the buildings and saw no more than a dozen men and one woman inside.

We were taken into a building where one of the protestors said he had been sleeping. It appeared to be a gym for the federal employees who usually manage this land.

There were cans of chicken noodle soup, oranges, apples and other food.

Through a glass window we could see a man and a woman cooking food in a kitchen. The site appeared to be in good condition.

Yes, the "site appears to be in good condition" - for now.

Three administration officials who spoke to Reuters said federal authorities are "following U.S. policy guidelines instituted to prevent standoffs from turning violent in the wake of deadly clashes at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and Waco, Texas in the early 1990s."

It's unclear how long that protocol will last, but rest assured, there's only so long the government is going to allow this sideshow to persist. After all, if one bird sanctuary falls to "militants", what's to keep another from falling tomorrow? Before long, there may be no federally administered bird sanctuaries left.

All sarcasm aside, the question here is clearly this: how long will it be before the government abandons the new "policy guidelines" and reverts to the pre-Waco strategy that would see the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge turned into a bad day in Fallujah?

Yes.

At some point, we need to redress the fact the .politburo has seized about 30% of the national land mass for its own pleasure and money-making deals.

From my reading of the Constitution, the BLM as presently constructed is itself unconstitutional.

I'm sure the "Republicans" are on it.

Provided they're not trying to give away everything in the land to diversity at the behest of a foreign tribe.  Curious how often they lecture on "national" security.

When will we have a Chinese lobby or a Chinese president?  That would be pretty diverse! Or, Native American president?  Rachel Dolezal could give pointers on how to play the part of a kosher minority group.  After all, she grew up in a Tee Pee.

once again, race has nothing to do with this issue at all. this is a conflict between those who believe land is better off in the hands of we the people and the feds...

Who are we, Chinese?

There again, we may need to be.  Very curious, how the diversity that the federal government is implementing will work out in the future.  Perhaps we could have a Chinese president telling the Chinese (who?   huh!!!) that the "international" debt/money that they bought isn't actually a national debt.

It's all a bit confusing for witless hypocrites that will not admit that race and ancient ethnic groups rooted in race exist, I suppose.  Much like the national debt itself, let's just play pretend!

Playing pretend.  Great plan, guys.

(And this is Zerohedge, the supposed "hard minded" men of the world that apparently get their identity from some movie made by a Jew about a fight club composed of "goyim"?)

That was Ammon Bundy's take on it.  Watch the Townhall meetings #1 and #2.  Ammon stated that the Sheriff gave up his Constitutional duties to protect his citizens and instead cooperated with the Feds.  If the County Sheriff and the State had stood up to the Feds, none of this would've happened.

If they were a twelve year old black then they'd probably have a fatherless kid needing more implicilty white policing or more food distribution from implicitly white ranchers and farmers already.

When these imaginary Africans don't have all that, then they often die or starve.

The militias are worthless they're all infiltrated and compromised controlled opposition. Look at Oath Keepers, where are they? Where have they been for all the cop killing protests? 12 year olds getting shot like dogs and Oath Keeoers are no where to be found. They're all ex cops, they're controlled opposition. They're traitors.

At that point when the entire ponzi comes undone then public support will not be with Obozo and fuckhead Montel Williams.

I'm not saying that you hand over your iron, just to recognize that this is the right fight at the wrong time.  Soon however, the wheels will inevitably come off the bus and everyone will have no choice but to accept real change and unfortunately it will almost certainly come with much pain and suffering.

It seems there is no other way to fix this fucking mess we've made of this world.

The Feds were forced to retreat from the Bundy's in Nevada and the longer this goes on these lads hold out, the probablity that the Feds will retreat again increases.  This strategy although it appears ill conceived could work, I hope it does.  The alternative is that the Feds go full on Waco but this time the slaughter will be being broadcast live over the internet.

Unless these guys are double agents working for the Feds, acts of defiance like this will slowly erode the power and mystique of the Feds (everytime they back down to force they lose a little more).

I appreciate that Stant and have wondered and still wonder if these guys aren't making a huge mistake or if they might even be a false flag group infiltrated by the Feds.  I think this is a valid viewpoint.

I am trying to be hopeful though and really hope their hearts are in the right place.  I don't think it will look good on the Feds to go in and use force right now either, that could serve to wake up people in "the middle" who are sitting on the fence in regards to their government.

Agree that it appears to an effective tactic. However, what do they accomplish if the Feds stand down and it all ends peacefully? The 2 men are already back in prison. Do you really think they will let them out if these boys play soldiers in that building for long enough? Not going to happen.

In 1996, common criminals calling themselves "the Montana Freemen," victimized their own neighbors in the community with fake liens and bank fraud. Eventually, the Federal authorities became involved and laid siege to their community. At the time, in the aftermath of Waco and Ruby Ridge, the FBI was very concerned that members of the constitutional militia movement might come to their aid.

They approached the leadership of these formations, trying to determine what our intentions were should the situation "go south," turning into another Waco. As part of this effort, the FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Albuquerque New Mexico office journeyed downstate to visit Bob Wright, than (as now) commander of the 1st Brigade, New Mexico Militia. "Bob," he asked, "would you really take your unit up to Montana to protect them?"

Bob looked him in the eye and said, "Why would I want to do that? There's plenty of you federal sonsabitches around here."

This is not just a few pissed off ranchers, over-reaching federales, fucked up courts, anti-terror laws, constitutionalists, the Free Shit Army, burning down Ferguson, Baltimore, or killing brown people within the U.S. and outside of it.

Boy is it tough to get an unbiased and/or accurate accounting of the underlying story on this issue.  The cato story started out really well with the details on the original "offense" of arson.  But then it broke down and started spilling inaccuracies of how and why Uncle Fraud "owns" property and whether it should.  I put "owns" in parentheses because Uncle Fraud is merely the trustee which is responsible for the administering/managing of said property but it is actually owned by the people of the US.  I'm referring to BLM land and national forest of which there are MILLIONS of acres.

I disagree that "civilization" is in decline.  This is an example of totalitarianism.  A centralized government that will not accept any form of public dissent (unless it is useful for an Uncle Fraud agenda).  You either toe the line or get stepped on like a bug.

We are waaaaaaay past due for some type of revolution, some state seceding, some, ANY type of interference with the trend to complete tyranny, but the masses have been pacified, conditioned, brainwashed into Big Brother acceptance.

This "issue" doesn't seem to be something that americans can empathize with though.  Gun control would be but Uncle Fraud knows how to divide and conquer by doing it in small increments on a constant and continuing basis.  Unlimited immigration would be another but there is no way to combat Uncle Fraud on that front except to elect someone that says they will do something about it.

Americans KNOW they are getting the shaft and there is no clear way to rectify the situation that isn't rigged by Uncle Fraud.  Its going to explode but its unclear as to whether its the budget or civil unrest comes first.
