President Obama Explains Why Making It Harder For "We, The People" To Get Guns Will Make Everyone Safer

Tyler Durden's picture

Amid threats from various Republican Congressmen, soaring pre-emptive gun sales, and a majority of Americans (56%) believe that if more Americans carried concealed weapons the country would be safer; President Obama is set today to formally announce his executive action new gun-control measures.

In the wake of mass shootings at schools and other public places, some have argued that the shootings could have been stopped if any of the victims had carried weapons. Others argue that having more citizens carrying weapons can lead to more violence and accidental shooting.

Obama plans to continue the weeklong push to promote the gun effort with a prime time, televised town hall discussion Thursday and it is sure to be prominent in Obama’s final State of the Union address to Congress next week. At the centerpiece of Obama's package of executive actions (which aims to curb what he’s described as a scourge of gun violence in the U.S) is a broader definition of gun dealers that the administration hopes will expand the number of gun sales subject to background checks.

Live Feed (Obama is due to speak at 1140ET)...

As we noted previously,

The government’s own numbers tell us that 3.8 people per 100,000 in the US die each year from non-suicide gun violence. Terror-related deaths are effectively 0.0.

Meanwhile, 11.6 per 100,000 die in traffic related deaths. A whopping 169.8 people per 100,000 die from heart disease.

As a gentle reminder, when another socialist utopia (Venezuela) imposed gun control laws, violent crime actually increased. And Caracas is now one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

What happens next? courtesy of the NYT:

The chart shows that while the soaring gun sales are the effect, the cause is simple: president Obama.

The same president who today at 11:40am will finally reveal just what, after many delays, his executive action(s) on gun control will be.

The concern is that with one more year under Obama's term, gun sales over the next 12 months are certain to surge to new all time highs as Obama's crusade to crush the second amendment slowly picks up steam in order to cement his "anti-gun" legacy, and as the population rushes to buy as many as it can before Obama makes such purchases illegal.

It's not all bad news though: gun makers could not have asked for a better president, as the following headline just confirmed:

  • SMITH & WESSON SEES 3Q ADJ. EPS 39C-41C, SAW 27C-29C

As of this moment Smith and Wesson is trading at an all time high.

No. From what I understand, he's mandated another 200-ATF agents be hired, is trying to ban face to face sale of firearms by essentially requiring gun sales to go through NICS (background check).

What is potentially dangerous about this is that the HIPPA laws will be changed to allow a doctor to report to the FBI if you are a mental patient. Now, on the surface that may sound just fine to anybody, but if your physician EVER asks you if you own a firearm, your reply should be "NO!". If your physician happens to be left leaning ideologue, and doesn't like your political views....you could suddenly be diagnosed as clinically depressed. My guess is that once you're diagnosed as having any form of psychological /psychiatric impairment or condition, you will permanently be on the no-buy list.

From what I also gather, for all Form 2 items, you'll no longer be able to purchase items through a trust, and be forced to get approval for purchase from your local sheriff. If your local sheriff is a progressive douchebag, you won't get approval for the item.

If Congress had a sack (which we know that they don't), they'd immediately cut funding to the DOJ and the ATF. In reality, our only recourse is to not obey an unjust law and risk the penalty. For instance, you notice a stranger at the firing range with a suppressed weapon. Don't ask to see his fucking tax tax stamp. Don't let some goddamned Fudd ask either. It's nobody's business. If you and a friend agree to purchase a firearm from one or the other. Go ahead and do it on your own. Don't go through an FFL. Nobody's business but your own. Fuck this tyrannical government imposing unjust provisions on your right to defend yourself against assailants (criminal or government---but I repeat myself).

Pure scaremongering and the exeuctive order is pretty clear on what types of patients and mental illnesses can be possibly reported to the FBI.  Almost certainly is going to be challenged in federal courts in regards to HIPAA and due process issues.

In general, it is a tough area to rule on in general with their being a lot of subtext about when a doctor or psychiatrist can disclose things outside the patient-doctor relationship to any 3rd party even one's spouse or child.  Courts generally including the SCOTUS have to find a very compelling reason to allow it. Even if a patient says something like "I really want to smash my wiife's face into sometimes" or "I want to throw her down a flight of stairs at times" would hold muster.  There are several very specific criteria that have to met to disclose this information to law enforcement with most practitioners being very hesistant to do so.  This won't be any different.

It just isn't nearly as black and white as you described and something like that (mild depression) would be instantly turned over in a court ruling and that isn't what the executive order states anyways or anything close to it.

No shit.  The people I know who think they need guns are so full of it it's unbelievable.  It's sad to see people living with such misplaced fear on the one hand, and self-delusion on the other.  Some of them think they'll use their pistols to face down a squad of black-masked mercenaries crashing through their windows.  That's the kind of fantasy only someone living in a very safe and peaceful place can indulge.

And getting rid of the flood of cheap handguns isn't going to fix the problems of generational poverty in our inner cities.  It would keep some young men from shooting innocent bystanders while missing each other, so that would be good.  It won't do anything about professional criminals, but they aren't the ones doing the killing, anyway.  They're pros, not hotheaded drunken young men with testosterone poisoning and a $250 pistol.

Violence in America is at an all-time low.  It's never been safer to be an American in America, especially if you're a cop.  If you want to really safeguard yourself, don't be involved with anyone who drinks or uses drugs; don't sell drugs or sex; and drive only in daylight hours in good weather; and don't smoke cigarettes or eat processed food.  You'll live until everybody you know is dead.

Everybody using this bullshit for partisan electoral political purposes is utterly full of shit, as you say.

"It's never been safer to be an American in America,"

And at a point where gun ownership is at an all-time high.

Gee, I wonder why..  Is there some correlation you might not have picked up on?

"Some of them think they'll use their pistols to face down a squad of black-masked mercenaries crashing through their windows."

Or even protect themselves from an armed robbery.  We know that never happens (to be reported on the MSM).

"And getting rid of the flood of cheap handguns"

That's already been addressed by the GCA of 1968.  It was supposed to rid the streets of "Saturday Night Specials".  There are no cheap handguns now.  Some are more affordable than others, but for the average low-wage earner trying to get my on a subsistence salary and pay for skyrocketing rent, the ability to purchase a firearm for their protection is limited.

The statement about it is 'never been safer to be an American' is bullshit on a per capita basis as violent crimes are still notably higher than the 40s/50s. It is just notably below where it was in the late 70s through the early 90s including homicide rate which is the only real crime stat that is hard to juco.

More American households don't own guns either.  That is a pure BS statement too. Not a single reliable poll shows that and if anything the numbers are really down. It's biggest cause is because the number of hunters is way down. First day of buck season in PA where I grew up was basically an unoffficial holiday with it being totally expectable to miss that day at school.  This was in the 80s and early 90s still.

The number of deer hunters in PA is way down though.  Decreased over 50% since 1970 and it is a dying sport as the population continues to age, open access to private land is notably down, and it has become a lot more expensive.

"More American households don't own guns either."

So, the burgeoning number of NICS background checks just indicate that only two or three homes in America must be sitting on one heckuva a stockpile, huh?

"Not a single reliable poll shows that and if anything the numbers are really down."

<phone rings>  Me, hello?

<robocaller survey starts> please press 1 if you own firearms or if anyone in your home owns a firearm or has access to a firearm.

<survey continues> please press zero if you do not own any firearms or have access to firearms in your home.

<beeeeep, beeeeeep, beeep> me pushing zero over and over.

Yeah, polls asking if you have money stashed in your mattress are probably just as accurate.

"The number of deer hunters in PA is way down though.  Decreased over 50% since 1970 and it is a dying sport"

And, only hunters purchase firearms?  Do you really believe that?

Obama says it doesn't happen in other countries.

Well we're the most multicultural and people from diametrically opposite cultures don't get a long.

Look at crime in Japan. Hmmm.

Guess what happens when you throw lots of people who don't agree on anything in the same room? They're gona start killing eachother.

Multiculturalism breeds violence. It's true throughout the world and througout history.

Speaking of which, how's the newly found multiculturalism in Europe doing to violent crime statisitics? Look at all the rape and violence. Wasn't happening like that before.

You not only believe it because you and everyone else around the world are taught these documents are still in effect. But you also believe it because the criminals constantly refer to it in the present tense as if the founding documents are still in effect. Which they are not.

Unfortunately this puts them in the position of fraudulently misrepresenting the facts throughout everyone's entire life in order to retain their power. And this is enforced by varying degrees of both knowing and unknowing accomplices. Which makes many of them conspiring frauds and criminals.

If enough people care and enough realize these facts then maybe something productive will be done about it. No violence is needed. Only knowledge and enough support. The tyrants will fold like a house of cards.

Besides the documents only put in writing some of what G-d has made unalienable. These rights don't stop existing because they aren't in writing or have been temporarily eliminated by criminals.

There is a huge difference between a guy that carries 25 guns to a rented table at a gun show, and a wife trying to sell Grandpappy's old huntin' rifle at a flea market. This law needs to clarify the difference or it will lose in court. Other than ATF guys roaming through gun shows and checking licenses, the law is basically unenforceable for small sales anyway.

One more thing that reminds me of Obamacare - if Jane SixPack can't sell Grandpappy's rifle to another individual, she will be forced to sell it at a big discount to market price - to a licensed gun dealer - who will then sell it at full market value. Just as Obamacare eliminated competition for big insurance companies, thus executive order effectively eliminates competition to licensed gun dealers!
