New Gallup Poll – Americans Consider Government A Much Bigger Problem Than Guns

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

U.S. President Barack Obama is not just the world’s best gun salesman, he’s also the world’s worst gun control spokesperson.

Despite immediately politicizing every single shooting event in recent years by using his bully pulpit to lecture the American public on why citizens must give up their rights to feel safe, his message has fallen on deaf ears. Why?

Mainly because a man who consistently orders drone strikes on women and children all over the world, intentionally bombs a Doctors Without

Borders hospital into oblivion, and who launched more shady wars across the globe than George W. Bush, doesn’t exactly hold much credibility as a humanitarian pacifist looking to “save the children.”

– From the post: A Majority of Americans Oppose “Assault Weapons Ban” – Highest Number on Record

We learned the above just last month, which makes the latest findings on how Americans view gun control consistent with previously observed attitudes. Meanwhile, Nick Gillespie over at Reason explains the latest poll results from Gallup, and  highlights how Obama continues to force an alternative agenda on the American people:

The first major action taken by Barack Obama in 2016—a set of new gun-control measures mandated via executive order—is aimed at a threat that Americans don’t spend a lot of time worrying about.

In its latest survey of Americans, Gallup finds that “dissatisfaction with government,” not guns or even terrorism, tops the list of concerns:

Obama’s new actions against guns include expanding background checks; changing definitions of mental illness in a way that limits who is able to own guns; increasing the number of federal agents charged with tracking gun sales and crimes; and more.

Because violent crime, including gun-related crime and murders, is way down, gun-control issues don’t generally capture the public imagination the way that they would in a world of increasing murder rates. In the same Gallup survey that listed “dissatisfaction with government” as the top concern for each of the past two years, “guns/Gun control” was considered “the most important problem” by 2 percent of respondents, about the same who listed “lack of respect for each other” and pollution.

Yet Obama pushes forward with measures that even he acknowledges “will save few lives,” almost certainly more out of politics than an interest in dealing with the most serious problems facing the country.

Obama’s willingness to always pivot to issues that are not front and center, along with his willingness to expand the role of the state in virtually every aspect of our lives from health care to mass surveillance is surely a big part of the reason why people are consistently worried more about government than anything else. In this, of course, he’s had plenty of help from Republicans and his fellow Democrats, which also helps to explain another Gallup finding released this time last year: “In U.S. New Record 43% Are Independents.”

Now let’s look at the detailed breakdown from Gallup. It’s not even close, gun control barely registers.

hannah, capitalize "Hitler" buddy.  Or lady.  Whatever.  Even if you don't capitalize anything else.

Why always him?  What did he do wrong? Oh, I forgot.  The brits and the yanks and Stalin (see? caps) blamed him for this, that, and the other.  OK.

History is written by the victors.  So let it be.

@ Hannah:

With all due respect, please try educating yourself, before offering commentary on Hitler. The fact is, the only nonsense we ever hear about the man, is written by WWII's victors, namely:

The Jews (Communists), the banks, and governments with political-angles to protect.

Everything that most reasonable people hate about these times, are the direct result of the outcome of WWII.

The 'people' who propagandize Hitler 70+ years' later, are "people protecting lies".

Ask yourself Why?

Later he had remorse... I guess.

Croesus and mile ahead - did i say hitler was evil...? i dont think so..... hitler isnt any different than any other dictator/politician in history. they are what they are...........i dont capitalize because my 'shift' key is broken. same for punctuation....and i only have one arm (lost it in the nazi gas chamber camps). hitler looks like a school boy compared to stalin or pol pot. i bet if we added up all the people killed in usa wars from 1946 to today, we have probably killed the same number or maybe more....

yep. It can't be overstated - take away black on black crime in inner cities run by democrats, the US falls down to around where other western countries. We have a black violence problem, not a gun problem. I still fail to see how any of this is going to address that. Just another step in disarming white, employed america. It may not disarm anyone, not yet, but just wait until they get that 'mental health' nonsense all spun up. Any doctor in the US will be given the power to deprive you of your right to own guns just based on a whim, and you will be powerless to do anything about it.

Yep.  You got it all figured out Grounds Keeper.  That's why you get the big bucks.

How about this: increse the guns to blacks in inner cities run by Democrats and let the black-on-black killing take care of the problem?  More revenue for the gun industry, and eventually more jobs for grounds keepers and other white, employed, America.

The mental health clause... oohhh; well now I see why you got your panties all in a wad... just sayin'.

I'm going to be talking to a good friend of mine in about half an hour.  He's got an FFL (Federal Friearms License) and he's going to give me the straight poop on what this new Executive Order means in the real world.

I think the most dangerous part of these rules revolves around the "mental illness" part.  Defined by who?  To what degree?  Is ANY doctor or therapist going to be able to file a report (rightly or wrongly) and you won't ever pass a backround check again?  What if you have to go back to him and ask him to sign off that you're OK now?  Do you think there is even a single doctor who would put their career on the line by backing off and saying "yeah, this guy's OK to tote around a .357 now".  What if that person is involved in a shooting later?  I bet the doctor gets his ass sued off.

What if you suffer from aspergers syndrome?  Alcoholism (even if you are in recover for many years)?  What about a guy who sees a shrink for a few months after, say, a messy divorce or.... you'll love this one.... loss of a good paying middle class job?

Your doctor or therapist is now being FORCED to be a government snitch just to cover their own ass in case something happens later.  Even if it's years distrant.  They'll over-report "mental illness" if they get even the slightest whiff of potential trouble and they'll NEVER reverse course after that.

You act like gun sales are the end point in this.  WRONG.  This is government intrusion by deception and coercion, as per the usual for Obama.  He doesn't give a shit about gun sales, he cares only about implementing more government control.

+1, excellent points. now, what if we are both right? a presidential decree that increases gun sales and increases governmental control? some would call it a win/win situation

look how many would be happy about that: doctors and psychatrists get more work, lobbyists and weapon producers more money, and even Congress can moan about the Prez... while it could of course make a law inside a minute to nullify (if that is the correct term in the US legal system) this decree

and of course the whole state gets more work about that, which then means more staff, more budget... more, more, more

80% of the new EOs are business as usual for FFL dealers except for paperwork and more responsibility. You are correct that it's the removal of ownership rights without due process and the further destruction of doctor-patient confidentiality that's worrisome this go-round.

Did the car run someboby over or was it the driver of the car that did it?

Was it the gun that killed the man or the driver of the gun?

If gun's get banned then so should cars. Cars kill more people.

Why would they need a gun when they sign the checks of a segment of the population that can use them with increasing impugnity or consequence against a civilian population.

So, in effect, those without guns ARE the most dangerous to your life and liberty.

The others are just hired muscle.

funny, guns are way down near the bottom, as in, most people aren't really concerned about it, because as the article said, violent crimes are actually a lot lower than in the not-to-distant past. About the only people who are concerned about it are leftist politicians and writers. Its also telling to note that right near gun control is climate/environment, another thing leftists care about a lot, but not everyone else. So, the two issues he spends the most time on are the two lowest concerns for americans.

Absolutely correct. It is so sad seeing all these fools complaining about guns when it is a side issue. All the guns in the world have not protected the American citizen from the Federal Reserve...and the stupid Americans look down on "pussified" europeans who have no guns...well what have guns done to materially protect you or your family from centralised tyranny??? Nothing, that's what. The harsh reality is that a society with fewer instruments of death floating around is better and safer for all merely on a mathematical probabilty level. Will there always be criminals and psychos?? Yes they currently run the joint and likely always will. Does having personal arms protect you or your family from organised crime and murderers with no empathy? No. You will all no doubt scream that when in an emergency you would rather have one on a personal level to protect you from the criminals immediately raping your family or stealing your stuff and taking you to the camps...However, I say I am smart enough to realise well before hand when the mass round ups are coming and any person wishing to resist will always be able to acquire firearms with ease in such a situation. Do you think it is really that hard for a frightened father of a family to acquire guns on the outskirts of Damascus right now today??? No it is not if he has something to trade, and someone will probably shove one in your hand for free if you promise to point it in the "right" direction. All this gun bollocks and false flag Sandy Hook desperation is likely an elaborate guns sales pitch to the perenniallyl petrified American morons... They appear to be the single most petrified scared populace on the planet aside from the Israelis...what do we get from terrified morons with all these guns??? More building of walls and genocide and drone strikes and a police state prison planet. Americans need to relax, sit down, go home and think about how to save their country from the enemy within. The rest of the world can take care of itself whilst you come to terms with the fact that your government murdered 3000 of your own citizens on live TV merely to justify arms sales and central bank debt expansion at the expense of millions of innocent lives across countries thousands of miles away...guns are a side issue.

I can't believe I am going to say this...but I can actually understand Obama's position. Imagine if you were a homosexual psychopath working for the CIA with even an ounce of empathy left. You are presented with a blackmail opportunity and infinite cash to get into the Whitehouse puppet position. You realise your fellow citizens are functionally retarded and that the entirety of history is a lie agreed upon by other psychopaths and that your citizens debt slaves are so fucking dumb that they can't handle the truth of a false flag operation killing their brothers in the thousands by dual citizen Zionist psychos. So what do you do? You can't replace all the political crime appointees in your deep state within a single decade...you don't even have a sympathetic congress of senate...so why not fake a few school shootings where noone is hurt to try and protect the idiots from killing eachother with guns that haven't protected them from being slaves anyway??? Why not??? The Americans obviously like being lied to??? There is no evidence that Americans en masse can even comprehend the truth, so why bother? Why not try and get some poor citizens inside a health care plan given you know that the insurance companies and debt is unsustainable anyway and will collapse eventually...Why not use Obamacare to collapse the broken system anyway so the idiots can start again??? Why not restart negotiations with the Cubans and open up a new market to exploit??? Why not switch allegience to the Shia Muslims in Iran from the Sunnis as constantly switching sides is how you destabilise an oil producing region so you can extract weapon sales and resources??? It is all good business for cluster bomb makers and debt sellers which is all the "West" is....And most people in the NATO countries relying on the scam for their welfared and pensioned society unknowingly...protest against it!!! Oh please don't blow up that wedding and hospital because I don't like the face of the war machine that keeps my lights on. It needs new victims to sustain itself and I can't face the reality...So please lie to me, please please lie to me. The "western" hypocrasy (including me) makes me sick sometimes...But do keep moaning on about personal firearms being important...they aren't.

Ridiculous.  Governments killed around half a billion people last century, 250 million in war, 250 million by policy.  Private citizen murder is NOTHING compared to this.  Gun control advocates are all actually gun monopolists.  They want to centralize gun ownership in the hands of the same oligarchs responsible for the VAST majority of murder.  It is an insanely irrational position.

Being vocal against political correctness, overt stupidity, etc. is a great way to slowly help foster change.

If you wait for somebody else to "start a movement" you're going to be waiting a long time.  Better to clean one's own house and welcome others as they do the same.  The system will eventually crash down around us, half the battle is not being under it when it does.

Absent Constitutional reform, term limits, eliminating giant campaign contributions and stopping corporate American from buying lawmakers coupled with lobbying reform- the whole system is fucked. The same self centered greedy assholes who we are trying to eliminate are the same greedy assholes who sit in Congress and pass those laws which would limit their own power.
