The Last Time Automakers Channel-Stuffed This Much, Lehman and GM Went Bankrupt

Tyler Durden's picture

Don't show Phil LeBeau this chart!

While day after day we are told how fantastic auto sales are in America... and how the reported data from the automakers shows just how 'strong' the US consumer must be.. and therefore the US economy.

However, as the following chart shows - it's all false!!

Relative to apparently surging sales, inventories of (unsold) motor vehicles are at their highest since August 2008...

In other words, the channel-stuffed "see how well we are doing" smoke and mirrors of credit-fueled malinvestment has hit a wall and yet the automakers - afraid to signal any chink in that armor - kept producing... there is only one way this ends... badly!

Simply put - The last time automakers channel-stuffed this much, Lehman and GM went bankrupt shortly after.

GM didn't go bankrupt. Obama saved them, just before he lowered the sea levels.

Maybe Obama should start threatening to confiscate cars like he does guns. Watch the vehicle sales spike as the cars start rolling out the doors.

Until they've been severely under the gun they just don't get it though, everything is fine in their life, after all they're just good politically correct citizens, what do they have to worry about?

They actually can't see it until it happens to them.

That's the problem.

No, recall;

‘I’ve (Bush) Abandoned Free Market Principles To Save The Free Market System’

'President George W. Bush stepped in Friday to keep America's auto industry afloat, announcing a $17.4 billion bailout for GM and Chrysler, with the terms of the loans requiring that the firms radically restructure and show they can become profitable soon.'

Yeah, we get it.  Every news is "the worst _________ since 2008!"  "Lehman died the last time _________ was this bad!"  "Panic!  Fear!  The ~7-7.5-year cycle is upon us and the end is nigh!"

I used to love this website, but I think the writers have lost their collective shit.

Their website has gotten bad since taking over Businessweek.  They want you to pay $2500/mo for the terminal service.  Even then, you have to pay extra for the real-time feed.  I get it free through work.  If I ran my own shop, I'd go to something like Money.Net.

The rhetoric is all over the so-called Alternative Mediaverse and I agree, it's fucking obnoxious... ZH is still my favorite go-to though...mostly for the comments! Alt-Media sites that have really become obnoxious: Before It's News Blacklisted News The Daily Sheeple The Intel Hub INFOWARS AND PRISONPLANET.COM DRUDGE REPORT (Fuck your aggregated news bs Matt Drudge you hipster wannabe fuck-wipe). The Commonsense Show (Fuck you Dave Hodges and your bs fearporn/clickbait babble) There are more, but I'm kinda pissed now, lol...ZH is the only tolerable place left in my fool opinion.

Yeah, I live in Michigan and what factories remain are churning out cars and trucks like crazy...where the majority of those produced remain in dealer lots...then suddenly, new models arrive and the last year models vanish...they must come at night with the trucks to load 'em up.

Seriously though, who the fuck is buying all these cars EVERY year? Seven year loans do not point to a consumer base that has the "chedda" to buy a new car every year.

"who the fuck is buying all these cars EVERY year?"

Well... the Toyotas are going to the ME where driving conditions are really a bitch, what with mines and bombs and such. They can go through a lot of inventory in a hurry - especially since Putin started helping the "planned obsolescence" program along....

Now if they can only reconfigure the distribution model to assign different brands of light duty/heavy duty pickups and vans to different factions, they could save the whole US auto industry!

Why is nearly every old Buick missing about half its paint?

IDK, most of the ghetto drivers are getting Chrysler for some reason. Then again Chrysler marketing has been targeting the black community. Lots of secondary market 300's in the hood with big chrome wheels...etc.

I hope they love the smell of gasoline.  Ever ridden in one of those things?  The smell of gas will give you a headache.

Sharp-looking car except for the tail end which looks like one of those hideous Camaro's.  A friend had a new camaro and the engine just seized-up one day.  He later found out this is a 'known-issue' with that v-6 motor.  Can you imagine that...?  It is a known issue our motors have a tendancy to seize-up, but fuck-it just keep selling em.  un fricken real.  (GM did pay to fix it).
