Having fallen consistently from almost 90% particpation in the labor force in 1948 to just 68.5% in 2015, it appears that crossing below the 70% participation rate has pushed American men to their limit of faith in career politicians.

You can call it a group if you want. We did not establish any official organization, much less a corporation or government.
We are individuals who collaborate in order to all enjoy the benefits of the results we create.
If you insist on calling us a group, that's fine. But we are only "bound" by a series of separate, independent, individual agreements between two individuals. We have no group agreements (more-than-two party agreements).
If you want to regard us as a group, that's fine. We do not think in such terms, or identify our interactions that way. We consider ourselves individuals who collaborate to achieve (and then enjoy) a common goal.
Though I don't remember our conversations very well (especially separate from other conversations I've had here in ZH), my guess is the following. If any of us individual humans agree to anything with another individual human, we are "a group" in your eyes.
Since everything in the universe ultimately interacts with everything in the universe, you might as well call the entire universe a group, as well as every entity in the universe a member of that group (the universe). I have no objection to you doing that if you want, but we find that approach makes distinguishing individual aspects of reality that we consider important (including any individual anything) inefficient and more difficult.
Since everything in the universe does ultimately interact with everything else, we take that as a fundamental "background fact" of every thought and situation. Which leaves us free (and able) to detect, identify and characterize all those subsets of the universe that "stick together" and have obviously individual characteristics that nearby parts of the universe do not have.
Your approach isn't the main problem. The problem is, virtually all human predators claim your approach justifies their demand that every individual must obey them because "you are all part of the society, and we rule society for the good of society".
To which we say nothing, pull our gun from our holster, and shoot them dead at the earliest opportunity. Either that or ignore and evade them, whichever we estimate is best on balance.

What the article misses is the fact that when you have so many out of work males (and young ones at that) you are headed for serious trouble. If you don't keep them busy and working and establishing a better life for themselves they will eventually grab guns and take it by force.
In the original American Republic, which has now been replaced by Progressive National Socialism, it was relatively easy to create good goals for the vast majority of men to aspire to... the American Dream as it has always been called.
Once that dream fails, and it is, there will be a Counter Revolution to get the dream back.
