California Fault Lines Are "Locked, Loaded, & Ready" For The Big One, Expert Warns

Tyler Durden's picture

The San Andreas fault is one of California's most dangerous. While the last big earthquake to strike the southern San Andreas was in 1857, as LA Times reports Thomas Jordan, director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, explained this week "the springs on the San Andreas system have been wound very, very tight. And the southern San Andreas fault, in particular, looks like it’s locked, loaded and ready to go."

Have you noticed that the crust of the Earth is starting to become a lot more unstable?

As The End of The American dream blog's Michael Snyder explains, over the past couple of months, major earthquakes have shaken areas all over the planet and major volcanoes have been erupting with a frequency that is more than just a little bit startling.  Here in the United States, the state of Oklahoma absolutely shattered their yearly record for quakes last year, we just saw a very disturbing earthquake right along the New Madrid fault just recently, and as you will see below one scientist is telling us that the San Andreas fault in southern California “looks like it’s locked, loaded and ready to go”.

The name of the scientist that issued that very ominous warning is Thomas Jordan, and he is the director of the Southern California Earthquake Center.  The following quote from Jordan comes from a Los Angeles Times article that was published this week that is getting a huge amount of attention right now…

“The springs on the San Andreas system have been wound very, very tight. And the southern San Andreas fault, in particular, looks like it’s locked, loaded and ready to go,” Jordan said in the opening keynote talk.

Other sections of the San Andreas fault also are far overdue for a big quake. Further southeast of the Cajon Pass, such as in San Bernardino County, the fault has not moved substantially since an earthquake in 1812, and further southeast toward the Salton Sea, it has been relatively quiet since about 1680 to 1690.

Here’s the problem: Scientists have observed that based on the movement of tectonic plates, with the Pacific plate moving northwest of the North American plate, earthquakes should be relieving about 16 feet of accumulated plate movement every 100 years. Yet the San Andreas has not relieved stress that has been building up for more than a century.

Jordan went on to say that when the tension that has been building along the San Andreas fault is finally relieved, it could potentially produce a magnitude 8 earthquake. What a Magnitude 8 quake would look like...

Back in 2008, the U.S. Geological Survey concluded that just a magnitude 7.8 earthquake along the southern San Andreas fault would cause more than 1,800 deaths, 50,000 injuries and 200 billion dollars in damage.

So we are talking about a truly historic event.

Many people out there believe that someday large portions of California will fall into the ocean as the result of an absolutely massive earthquake, but the USGS is convinced that is not likely to happen.  However, they do openly admit that someday the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco will be located right next to one another…

Will California eventually fall into the ocean?

No. The San Andreas Fault System, which crosses California from the Salton Sea in the south to Cape Mendocino in the north, is the boundary between the Pacific Plate and North American Plate. The Pacific Plate is moving northwest with respect to the North American Plate at approximately 46 millimeters per year (the rate your fingernails grow). The strike-slip earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault are a result of this plate motion. The plates are moving horizontally past one another, so California is not going to fall into the ocean.

However, Los Angeles and San Francisco will one day be adjacent to one another!

But of course it isn’t just California that we need to be concerned about.

According to the Daily Mail, one team of scientists has concluded that giant chunks of the Earth’s mantle are “breaking off and sinking into the planet” under the North American plate, and that this is what has caused some of the unusual earthquakes in the eastern part of the country in recent years…

The southeastern United States has been hit by a series of strange unexplained quakes – most recently, the 2011 magnitude-5.8 earthquake near Mineral, Virginia that shook the nation’s capital.

Researchers have been baffled, believing the areas should be relatively quiet in terms of seismic activity, as it is located in the interior of the North American Plate, far away from plate boundaries where earthquakes usually occur.

Now, they believe the quakes could be caused by pieces of the Earth’s mantle breaking off and sinking into the planet.

I don’t know about you, but that sounds rather ominous to me.

The crust of our planet already somewhat resembles a giant cracked egg, and to hear that pieces may be breaking off and sinking into the interior is not exactly comforting.

And those same scientists are telling us that the process that has been causing this is ongoing and will continue to produce more earthquakes

The study authors conclude this process is ongoing and likely to produce more earthquakes in the future.

‘Our idea supports the view that this seismicity will continue due to unbalanced stresses in the plate,’ said Berk Biryol, a seismologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and lead author of the new study.

The [seismic] zones that are active will continue to be active for some time.’

Those that follow my work closely know that I have been writing about seismic activity a lot lately, and that I believe that major earth changes are coming to the North American continent.  I am deeply concerned about the New Madrid fault, the Cascadia Subduction zone, the major faults in southern California and Mt. Rainier up in Washington state.

In the end, I don’t believe that we will see just one or two major seismic events in the years ahead.

For those of us that are fortunate enough to live long enough, I believe that all of those areas that I just mentioned will experience major events.

You might be right. It would be the perfect time to declare a national emergency, nationalise all deposits, savings, pensions, gold and silver possessions and execute all savers + people who are a burden to the State like invalids, elderly, the sick, students, depressed and psychotic.

Just include everybody not in Washington and Wall Street.

Problem solved.

300 years of compression is very little for structures this size.  The earthquakes are harmless unless you live in a mexican pile of mud bricks.

The really big quakes happen every 100k or million years.  Look at those beautiful mountains and think about where they came from.

If you really need something to be skeered about, worry about the armed gangsters in DC.

Mehh, here in the Eastern Sierras the mountains grow every year, in fact Mt. Whitney may lose its status as the tallest peak in the lower 48 due to the fact that White Mountain Peak is outgrowing it. Some say it has already surpassed Whitney. Mountains do continually shift and grow due to any size quake.

We have a crooked, psychopathic government and useless, bribe-funneling political parties holding what is sure to be the most rigged election in history.

The U.S. government's odds of extermination are increasing rather dramatically. The fake construct of the EU and ZATO are not far behind.

America? Not so much. Europe? It will be there, but you better have your fucking hijab or you'll get beaten with rubber hoses.

Fear is not real.

The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination causing us to feel dread or terror of things that do not at present and may not ever exist. Danger is very real but fear is a choice.

I often wonder how much of this is 'fear porn' meant to get people to believe that 'SOMETHING AWFUL IS GOING TO HAPPEN!!' - and if they get enough people to believe it, then it happens? Could it be that if you program enough people to believe something, then they will create it?

If enough people believe in 'END TIMES!', can that mass belief in itself be enough to cause them? And, could this be the real reason for religions placing this in their doctrines, as a means to control the populace and keep people in fear so they obey?

On the other hand, the Earth's magnetic field is decreasing, which could cause disruptions in the crust, so there IS that...but...is it a cause, or effect of, belief?

Fuck it, it's time for beer.

There aren't enough nukes in the world to sink a whole continent. But a surface nuke in DC... that would be doable since it's already nearly AT sea level... and blame it on King Neptune. The President could declare war immediately and announce cessation of trade, and raise taxes to pay for the war materials that would be required to defeat the cetation menaces.

But seriously - for those of you who are comfy with being half a continent away from San Andreas or the East coast... there's a weak spot in the mantel of NA that could cause a lot of mischief if bad people wee so inclined... Look up the Reelfoot Rift...

@ John Kich: Shove your comment spam up your ass.

Getting back to the article, I find it sensational, doom porn even, hardly different than that pushed by some of the "Man Made Global Warming" crowd. We have thousands of earthquakes daily. My neighborhood experienced a magnitude 5 just a few days ago. To suggest for example that "many scientists believe that we are way overdue for a continent-altering earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone" seens disingenuous, as if to suggest that nature who feel some twisted obligation to satisfy a seismologist's statistical sense of entitlement!  If there's one thing we learned from the "Global Warming" debacle, it's that reality tends to be more complicated.

Well, it's still the jubilee year, and in effect the Shemitah year also. IMHO this year, (Sept '15 thru Sept '16), opens the 6th seal of Rev, (the other 5 have been unfolding since 1889,) and the primary event of the 6th seal is a 'great' earthquake.   Not to be confused with the global 'quake of Rev 18. It could hit anyplace on the globe, but, I expect the 'quake to really kick off the financial collapse, so probably Japan, Europe, or USA.

TheEndIsNear's picture

Nonsense. My latest Rev 7 reading of chicken entrails proves positively that all will be peaches and cream for the remainder of the century.

Seeing Red's picture

Based on the scientific papers I've read, I think the scientists might even be understating what they know here.  But hey, like you say, it's complicated so let's just ignore all that science stuff.  Prepping for a financial apocalypse is OK, but not for demonstrably repetitive earthquakes.

fbazzrea's picture

But really, there are many coinciding global geographic trends and events occurring, ranging from the planet's pending magnetic field reversal to the increased tectonic stresses induced by the earth passing through the galactic plane (peak mass) in its ~26k year "wobble" as predicted by the Mayan, to a possible physical pole shift (earth's crust actually floats atop the mantle), to the human race exploding near-exponentially and trying to kill each other over remaining finite resources, to growing risks an antibiotic-resistant killer superbug will go viral, to GMO's unknown effects on our immune system, to the last four years having had the warmest global temps on record to unprecedented global debt and government totalitarianism to an unknown rise in sea level to... on and on.

These factors and numerous others are evident in our world today. There can be no denying that at the present, there exists more chances for global catastrophe than at any other time in the generally accepted version of recorded history. I submit that as proof we are currently in the final state of a crescendoing uptick swing in wars, pestilence and human catastrophe. There is a growing mountain of evidence, to those seeking, Nature will also most probably include geophysical events in this reshaping of humanity and our planet's future in a symbiotic hand in hand gesture, so to speak.

But never fear. Everything works out as it should. (:

It is true that the Earth has its own geological and environmental cycles hard wired in since the beginning of time. However, the psychopaths who are in control of this planet are making things worse with their war toys and underground explosions.

These are frequent, massive blasts that gain in strength and regularity, and who knows how far the reverberations travel. For sure the psychopaths don't care, they have their bunkers and planes ready.

The psychopaths are as much to blame as the natural cycles, maybe more so since they are intentional and only trying to keep up with the psychopaths next door. Too bad that so many innocent people pay with their lives for the malice of these creeps abusing technology.

The Cascadia Fault is expected to slip before San Andrias.  Cascadia is supposed to mostly cause a Tsunami that will inundate the northwest to about 5 miles inland on top of the earthquake.  Maybe it will trigger San Adnrias at the same time.  That would be really bad.
