The High Life: Here Are The States Where The Most People Are Tokin' Up

Tyler Durden's picture

After a slew of states across the country have decided to legalize medical and/or recreational use of marijuana, the Washington Post decided to take a look at the impact this new legislation has had on weed consumption by state.  Ironically the map looks a lot like the 2016 electoral college map with the highest levels of consumption per capita coming from the liberal strongholds of New England and the West Coast.  Meanwhile, Montana seems to be the one conservative outlier where people love both their individual liberties and tokin' up on the reg.

Overall, a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that 22 million Americans like to light up on a monthly basis with closer to 37 million admitting they partake at least once a year.

According to one estimate by ArcView Group, a marijuana industry consulting firm, the legal marijuana market rang up $6.7 billion in sales in 2016.

Legal or not, millions of Americans already use marijuana regularly. According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 8.3 percent of Americans age 12 and over -- 22 million people -- used marijuana on a monthly basis in 2015. And close to 37 million people used marijuana at least once that year.

Weed Use

Meanwhile, it's readily apparent that the highest marijuana use per capita comes from states where the drug has been legalized for medical and/or medicinal purposes.

In the 2014-2015 period (years are paired for state-level data to provide bigger sample sizes), nearly a quarter of people in places where recreational pot is legal -- like D.C. and Colorado -- used some form of marijuana at least once a year.

That's nearly double the national average, and it's close to three times the rate for the most pot-abstinent states, like Alabama, Mississippi and Iowa, where around 8 or 9 percent of people age 12 and older use pot yearly.

Generally speaking, the Northeast and the West Coast are the two major marijuana hotbeds in the country. Marijuana use between the coasts is generally lower, with the notable exception of Colorado.

The state-level data shows that places with the most marijuana use generally have some form of legal medical or recreational marijuana available. This is likely a two-way street: places with lax attitudes about marijuana use are more likely to approve legal marijuana, and marijuana availability probably leads to more lax attitudes about use.

Weed Legal

Finally, for our entrepreneurial readers, we just wanted to highlight that we see staggering opportunities for new KFC and Taco Bell franchises in parts of Montana, Colorado and New England.

sooooooooooooooo, pretty much everybody.  All right then ;-)

OregonGrown's picture

Soooo.... Loved this article.   Question, i see the humor in investing in a taco bell if you were an "entrepreneur", but why wouldnt you want to invest in an actual dispensary or grow?

I happen to be the owner dispensaries here in Oregon.  I also own (brand new crowdsourcing website for other "ganjapreneurs"....)  We just filed for two,  tier 2 grows here here in the great state of Oregon.  With each tier 2 grow, I can grow up to 1 acre of marijuana outdoors, and 10,000 Sf of marijuana indoors.  As much as I would love to finance this entire operation myself and be 100% owner of this enterprise, I am a realist and realize that I will need to bring on an investor or 2.... Which is why I started to develop the GrowFundMe site to begin with.

Not too many business' /opportunities left in the business world to exponentially increase your investment each and every year, for the foreseeable future. Looking at the map above, there are only a handful of states who are allowing recreational marijuana today... and that is just the beginning.  I believe the rest of the states will allow recreational marijuana just to fill the tax coffers and I believe each state who is not rec yet, will become recreational states over the next 5 years.

That being said, Is there any ZHers that would like to invest in arguably one of the last frontier's of wealth creation, when it comes to business.... the marijuana business?  If so, please reach out to me at so we can discuss a little further.

Oh... one last little tidbit.  Marijuana has been my business for YEARS.... Not only am I an entrepeneur, but a visionary.  I also own and  and looking to develop those sites... creating a basket of marijuana related stocks, making money passively on the active management of so said funds.  Anyone interested in helping develop out any one of these business', I would love to hear from as well!

REALLY hurting Big Pharma.. I read somewhere they are down 80% in legalized areas.

the probwem is that a lot of this med cannibis is just putting out the warning light.  don't get me wrong - i'm all in for decriminalization, but i briefly used cannibis mostly for insomnia (i'm in washington), and found a strain that worked really well.  i still came home form bidness trips completely knackered, so got into testosterone replacemen therapy, and that is a much better solution.

my point is: holding out for a better solution is sometimes the right thing to do.  no doctor that i went to would suggest trt, but me deciding that for myself was the right answer - and i do so under medical supervision.  i'm looking at cortisol levels next.

bluez's picture

I'm afraid your doctors will next be recommending a sex change operation. They need the money, just like the rest of us.

Testosterone replacement? Try this instead: exercise and lift regularly. Done.

Chronic is the only tonic. I felt a cold coming on ate a load vitamin C rich fruit and had a few joints. It never kicked in fully. Big phrama on the other hand would have sold me pills to "help" my symptoms for £5 a pack.

The legalization of weed is also why the cartels are now buying and controlling lime and avacodo farms.

Democrat slave masters who control Commiefornia passed 900+ laws in 2016.

SB 1383: Controlling Cow Flatulence. Not making this up. In spite of the fact that 53 California dairy farmers went bankrupt, moved out of state, or just closed down this year, the Marxist-Progressives are back at it again. Capture cow farts or suffer heavy fines. CARB (CA Air Resources Board) suggests inserting a tube into the cow’s digestive system and venting into a backpack. Even liberals admit that laws like this, where government tries to control the uncontrollable, can have undesirable economic consequences. Lost jobs, lost industries, lost revenue. Stupid law.

It's a real problem.  Too many stupid laws.  Had to get one changed just to build my house.  Fortunately, we live in a tiny community and good sense won out, but overall we are strait-jacketed by the law and regulatory framework of fees and permits.

Fuck that.

Montana is on the Right Side of Patriotic. They know enough to say fuck you to unConstitutional Laws.

The travesties are the places that are on the Right Side of Patriotic, but have an active/pro-active Police State of Oathbreakers, enforcing suffering, suicide, genocide, etc. (This map should be a real eye opener. Not everything is as black and white, figuratively, as we want it to be.)

Boredom is no excuse for the drug epidemic.

The whole concept of getting high is really quite stupid.  No matter how you try to rationalize it, IT IS STUPID.

We are taught that it is ok by people with shit to sell....alcohol, cigarettes, pot, meth, heroin.  And it is all shit really.

Those without better education and/or common sense succomb.

And if you happen to be an individual with a physiolgic lock for which the drugs are a are lost....completely addicted to the experience.

Do you know how precious and productive normal cerebral physiology is????  You are so lucky to be here and able to function and you are content to completely mess that up because of advertising or peer pressure or boredom?

This is why I have little empathy for people who get high and have troubles.  They are stooooopid.    They need discipline, education and a babysitter to give them a purpose and or activity that is productive.

Besides, when you smoke pot you fall into a drawer full of people that includes obama.   That should be enough to shut the industry down immediately.

"The whole concept of getting high is really quite stupid.  No matter how you try to rationalize it, IT IS STUPID."  Says the person who's never taken a psychedelic, on purpose.

I did try LSD twice and mushrooms twice...and that REALLY impressed me with the fragility of our brain and our congnitive abilites.  It made me realize that schizophrenia is understandable as a chemical imbalance and such a wretched disease, disorder.  So is Alzheimer"s or Lewy Body disease.  The reality induced by the drugs is not "reality".  There is nothing to find there.  How do we ain't real!!  Although i often wonder about the kids who grew up with heavy weed consuming they actually relate to life better with a blood level of THC?  Used to babysit for a young boy who was really sort of developmentally slow...his house and his clothes ALWAYS reeked of weed.

Glad I have better things to do and didn't jump out a window to my death!  I help a lot of people EVERY day.  I really don't judge them for their habits...I just see the effect it has on their lives.   Really Really glad it ain't me.

Lol... I am in healthcare too.... I love the fact that doctors (and nurses)push oxycotin (synthetic heroin) to the patients all to justify everyone's 6 figure paychecks.... but demonizes marijuana, which has been medicine for humans for over 5000 years.

When 1 kilo of oxycotin costs 1.2 million dollars retail to the public.... and 1 kilo of high grade indoor grown marijuana costs only $5,000 retail... someone or some industry might have 1.2 million reasons to demonize one, while prescribing the hell out of the other.... sound familiar?

TRULY doctors are the drug dealers of the 21 century!  Let me say thank you for helping ruining our country and helping make everyone strung out zombies, while judging the people that want to heal themselves naturally.

MUST WATCH 3 minute video   Is your doctor, your drug dealer?

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Guess you and the government think you know better for everyone.

Thebighouse's picture

I do NOT know what is better for everyone.  Go out and eat your grass and see how well you live without real nutrition.

It IS stooopid to smoke messes with your lungs....Just keep up the rationalization.

I do not CARE what you choose to do with your life as long as I do not have to support your butt.  Unfortunately, we do support the drug addicted.

My point is, our government should not get involved....but for you to involve yourself with a rationalized interpretation of the bible is hilarious.

I said it is is...and you can have all the justification you really don't need any....go get high...but there are much much better uses of time

and your energies.  It is so sad to see the people croak after shooting up fentanyl laced heroin...and having their baby starve to death....awful.  Why do this???

So sad to see such complete waste of life.  Our government is the same....a huuuuuge waste.  Eat your grass, don't smoke it, and "recharge" that great mind of yours.  Peace out!

Yes, I'm in healthcare :(

If it were not for the other horrible things going on, it would be pretty cool to live through this period of history in which the "other prohibition" ended.  I don't even partake these days, but freedom is an end unto itself.

I'm okay with legalized pot, to each their own.

I'm not okay with KFC and Taco Bell.  That stuff is toxic waste disguised as food.  We should be selling it to the Saudis.
