U.S. Preparing Charges To Arrest Julian Assange

Tyler Durden's picture

In a stunning new report, CNN has just revealed, according to anonymous sources at least, that US authorities have prepared charges and will seek the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for intelligence leaks dating all the way back to 2010.

US authorities have prepared charges to seek the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, US officials familiar with the matter tell CNN.

The Justice Department investigation of Assange and WikiLeaks dates to at least 2010, when the site first gained wide attention for posting thousands of files stolen by the former US Army intelligence analyst now known as Chelsea Manning.

This latest revelation comes after CIA Director Mike Pompeo ramped up the Trump administration's rhetoric against WikiLeaks describing it as a "non-state hostile intelligence service" earlier this week.  Ironically, as we noted this morning, Pompeo's comments can just days before the FBI and CIA admitted that they are searching for an "insider" at the CIA (not a Russian) who exposed thousands of top-secret documents that described CIA tools used to penetrate smartphones, smart televisions and computer systems.

Last week in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, CIA Director Mike Pompeo went further than any US government official in describing a role by WikiLeaks that went beyond First Amendment activity.

He said WikiLeaks "directed Chelsea Manning to intercept specific secret information, and it overwhelmingly focuses on the United States."

"It's time to call out WikiLeaks for what it really is: A non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia," Pompeo said.

Pompeo's comments were, of course, met with an immediate snarky reply from Assange over twitter.

For the past several years, U.S. prosecutors have struggled with whether the First Amendment precluded the prosecution of Assange.  In fact, in what now appears to be a very prescient opinion piece, Julian Assange recently penned an article in the Washington Post defending his publications by saying that his motives are "identical to those claimed by the New York Times and The Post."

Quite simply, our motive is identical to that claimed by the New York Times and The Post — to publish newsworthy content. Consistent with the U.S. Constitution, we publish material that we can confirm to be true irrespective of whether sources came by that truth legally or have the right to release it to the media. And we strive to mitigate legitimate concerns, for example by using redaction to protect the identities of at-risk intelligence agents.

During President Barack Obama's administration, Attorney General Eric Holder and officials at the Justice Department determined it would be difficult to bring charges against Assange because WikiLeaks wasn't alone in publishing documents stolen by Manning. Several newspapers, including The New York Times, did as well. The investigation continued, but any possible charges were put on hold, according to US officials involved in the process then.

All that said, CNN's sources seem to believe those same prosecutors have now found a way to move forward...though we're sure the New York Times won't receive similar arrest warrants.

Of course, it's unclear what immediate purpose the charges will serve given that Assange is holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for the sole purpose of avoiding political persecution.  That said, somehow we suspect that some form of 'leverage' is about to be applied against Ecuador to help them 'remember' that they have other immediate and critically important uses for Assange's London bedroom.

And this pretty much sums it up:

Actually only the CIA asset charged Assange, the other woman refused. However the Swedish Government said that she wasn't qualified to know if she had been raped, and charged Assange.

That's womens rights in Sweden for you, women are supposedly so stupid they don't even know if they have been raped.

I'm buying everything except the hookers. How dare you tempt Assange to cheat on Pamela. You dick.

Churlish banter.  Reminds me of my childhood chants of "Liar, liar, pants on fire."

Hey, MAGAs, how's that revolution of yours going?!?

bookofenoch's picture

It started out well, and then took a digger.

Possible reasons:
1. Trump was always a tool
2. Jared put an Invasion of The Body Snatchers pod next to Trump's bed
3. Trump was drugged/hypnotized
4. Trump was shown a video of JFK's assasination

Demand a jury trial and don't waive time. Assange will win even if Saul Goodman represents him. I can't imagine all 12 people .......you know.

rwe2late's picture

 The jury vetting process will

insure that Assange will NOT be tried by his peers.

Also, the judge will instruct the jury as to what the law means and how to vote.

And if all else fails, Assange will be held incommunicado indefinitely

for suspicion of allegedly aiding "terrorism".

As if WikiLeaks Exposes of the 'Podesta Emails' late 2016 did not sour the Hillary Campain and open American's eyes to the Corruption that is the DNC. Maybe even tilting the scales for thousands if not hundred of thousands of undecideds.

Jeff you should thank Assange and others for your job Sir......

Hubbs's picture

Bullshit. They may already know who the inside leaker is, but will either never identify him or prosecute him. All hush hush. They need another scapegoat, and Assange fits the bill.

I bet he's really touching cotton now

Insurrector's picture

Thanks for the new phrase.

For those of you who like me had no idea what that meant, i give you the Urban Dictionary definition:

"the point at which your bowel movements are so strong that the turd has actually begun exiting the anus, therefor touching the cotton in your underwear"

No Assange, no Trump presidency! Message to Donald. Stop being such a dick and start being the president you promosed you'd be.

Trump has obviously been co-opted. The only question that remains at this point is what leverage did the deep state scum finally get on him?  Or did they drug him?

"...found a way to move forward..."

I am sure they can find some (ignorant) jurors who will agree with them.

Rock on Trump.

That was some freaky shit that you inspired me to in 1986.

Here, a little 420 should help with that Trump tension headache.

My money is on two bets here:

1) Ann Coulter speaks at berkley

2) We get Julian Assange outta that euca embassy and into a place where the spooks can't get him.

Brazen Heist's picture

Why does my gut tell me the slimey limeys could do something illegal regarding Assange?

What stops them from walking in the Ecuadorian embassy and seizing Assange, if they can "walk in" on Syria and Libya uninvited?

If the world believed their Syria false flag, this would be a walk in the park. They just need to say they thought Russians hackers were in the embassy, and oh by the way we now got Assange, but not the hackers! Ah well, too late, we're now on British soil.

Joe A's picture

That would be a bad geopolitical decision. Cause that would turn the whole of Latin America against the US. China and Russia would walk in to fill the void.

otschelnik's picture

Arrest Assange for what?!  Its not against the law to publish leaked documents, only to leak them.

stubb's picture

Law? law? You think they care about laws??? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

So we had Hillary Clinton compromising national security with her illegal acts, responsible for deaths in Bengahzi because it interefered with her plans, and other sick stuff, but no charges bought.

So who does the DOJ charge? Wikileaks or Assange?

Likwise from the NYT and other media, should then the authors of pieces based on leaked intelligence get the same charges?

  • Media encourages illegal leaks by publishing them and then Protecting their sources. Which is exactly what Wikileaks does.

So the DOJ going after/ targetting Asange but not authors in media, and is not prosecuting and the basis of crime but by way of vendetta, because Wikilieaks ambarassed powers in the US.

Trumps new police state - his actions mimicking the final days of empires

fatlibertarian's picture

Well, maybe it'd be in Assange's interest to be arrested by the U.S. and tried in court. He may very well win. He's NOT an American citizen. Our own laws protect journalists who publish classified material, so why would Assange be any different? They won't push for a case if there is none. They'll just kill him like they suppodedly did to Osama Bin Laden. Bin Laden would have also been difficult to prosecute.

RedDwarf's picture

I will become vehemently anti-Trump if this is true.  Assange has been the primary source of real journalism left in the world.  The NSA and CIA have been engaged in monstrous treason.  Assange is just the reporter of it.  Trump and any other politicians who support this will also become accomplices and traitors.

The only one who could support this action given how dramatically it will tear this nation apart and radicalize it is those who would see America destroyed.  Draining the swamp is what is needed.  A dramatic reduction in the size of the federal government is what is needed.  It is also what we will eventually get, one way or another.  That is not a threat.  It is gravity.  As America approaches totalitarianism, it will splinter and collapse.

The latest leakers name is Dennis Montgomery, who has a brain tumor and won't be here pretty soon so that is why he leaked the "hammer" info to Joe Arpaio.      The person handing the leaks to Wikileaks regarding Podesta and Clinton was Craig Murray democratic politician, and he was given the info by the NYPD/FBI and a lot of others who were sick of the corruption of their leaders. So there is no mystery and Assange was just an intrument for getting out the information. That information made Clinton step down the night before the election by these intel agencies telling her they had her number in criminality if she used the "Magic Fraction program on the election totals. Which would have let her win by a guaranteed number of votes in tight races.. Walla! She lost in what so many people think was a miracle election... It was just not fixed that night to the expected out come. This government or shadow government is so crooked it needs to be replaced altogether especially the CIA who really runs the country. Do you think you know how this happens and no one is held accountable?  Watch this CIA whistleblower explain how the CIA is contolling what is allowed for you to know.  Take the time.

Interesting information, Mighty 30 and as plausible as anything else, I suppose.

I can bet that Assange will have a suicide option, sorry to say, than fall into the hands of US authorities, who have a lot of pent up anger at him.  Especially those former Hillary supporting intelligence people.

So they try to arrest Assange - suicide and dead-mans-swith released.

The Wikileaks dead-mans-switch would be ineresting

  • Audio and or video of Whitehouse Politicians raping little girls and boys
  • Whitehouse and other politicians possible torturing and killing their rape victims
  • Politicians and Whitehous committing treason
  • Many other forms of corruption by politicians and Whitehouse politicians
  • Likewise the above for senior intelligence officers
  • Copious first level documentation showing various forms of corruption by the above.

Sorry Julian, would be almost worth it just to see all thise other stuff.

amenlight's picture

I hope Assange releases all that and more, while he is still alive! Let the Truth be known to all!!! Expose all these evil people without mercy!!!

I've noticed a pattern in this world.  Good is bad (jailed and persecuted) and bad is good (empowered and held up) so this disappoints me but doesn't surprise me.   Maybe it's one of those nine-dimensional chess moves that doesn't make sense to the plebs, but I doubt it.  Trump has to a large extent been co-opted by the reptiles he surrounds himself with.

Bananamerican's picture

you mean "to a Bigly extent"

Thom Paine's picture

ALSO - to touch Assange I can imagine will trigger an avalanche of insider leaking against the 'state'

You can just see it now - We have video of a certain SoS or POTUS commiting rape, sex with minors - we will realease if you don't let Assange go.

and so on...

There are always unintended consequences.

I'm surprised that Assange hasn't yet escapred from the embassy.

"non-state hostile intelligence service"

If this label can be so easily applied to an organization such as Wikileaks, just think of the ease in which it will no doubt soon be applied to any one with a blog or YouTube channel that speaks out against government tyranny--We're speaking of here in the US, it's already happening in Europe and Wahhabist Muslim countries.

More evidence that we have crossed the Rubicon.

We have no further comment on any of the events of our day.  We are at war with tryanny and evil and will act accordingly.

Our fate is sealed and We welcome it without fear.

Our destination, whether Heaven, Hell, or parts hitherto unknown makes no difference to us; for to die without a fight is to have lived without honor.

This isnt Trumps doing, remember these CIA & FBI pukes hate Trump just as much BUT i think this has something to do with what Obozo passed before he left office, no? Law against fake news or better yet the law that supports gov't approved news.!!!

Welcome to the Neo-con fantasy world. Along with "enemy combatants" "WMD" etc..

Someone wants to break it to Mike Pompeo that his head is stuck up his arse.

Leave politics to the politicians Mr Pompeo.

I want to see statistics on how many politicians and Whitehouse appointees, and how often go visit Haiti and line up outside the international orphanage there.
