Facebook's Sandberg: "We Really Have To Go After Fake Accounts, But Divisiveness Not A Reason To Remove Content"

Tyler Durden's picture

As Facebook COO Sherly Sandberg completes her desperate DC walk of shame in an attempt to appease Mark Warner and the rest of the Facebook-scapegoaters, she gave Axios an interview to explain (strawman) what the biggest social media platform in the world will do about the Russian menace that has Made America Divided Again (allegedly)...

Sandberg said she had "very productive" meetings yesterday with congressional leaders investigating Russian efforts to use social media to meddle with the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Sandberg told Axios at a live event today that Facebook owes the American people an apology ("Not just an apology, but determination") for their role in enabling Russian interference during the election.

Headline Dump:

  • *SANDBERG: HILLARY CLINTON WINNING WAS IMPORTANT TO ME
  • *SANDBERG: FACEBOOK HAS `ENOURMOUS' RESPONSIBILITY TO USERS
  • *SANDBERG: ALL RUSSIA-LINKED ADS SHOULD BE RELEASED
  • *SANDBERG: IT IS CONGRESS' DECISION WHEN TO RELEASE RUSSIA ADS
  • *SANDBERG: WE ARE CO-OPERATING WITH OTHER COMPANIES ON ADS
  • *SANDBERG: INVESTING IN MACHINE LEARNING TO COMBAT RUSSIA ADS
  • *SANDBERG: WE HOPE TO SET A `NEW STANDARD' FOR TRANSPARENCY
  • *SANDBERG: THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN `BAD ACTORS' AGAINST DEMOCRACY
  • *SANDBERG: HAVE GIVEN CONGRESS ADS AND THE PAGES THEY LINKED TO
  • *SANDBERG: WE WILL GIVE CONGRESS ALL THE MATERIAL THEY WANT
  • *SANDBERG: DIVISIVENESS IS NOT A REASON TO TAKE DOWN CONTENT
  • *SANDBERG: IF CONTENT IS FROM REAL ACCOUNTS, IT SHOULD STAY UP
  • *SANDBERG: WE WANT HELP FROM THE US INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY
  • *SANDBERG: DECEPTIVE, DIVISIVE ADS A NEW KIND OF THREAT
  • *SANDBERG: WE ARE `DETERMINED' TO DEFEAT FOREIGN INTERVENTION
  • *SANDBERG: `FAKE NEWS' IS INFORMATION THAT IS FACTUALLY FALSE
  • *SANDBERG: FOCUS OF OUR EFFORTS IS ON GOING AFTER FAKE ACCOUNTS
  • *SANDBERG: FACEBOOK SHOULD NOT BE THE ONE FLAGGING INFO AS FALSE
  • *SANDBERG DOESN'T ADDRESS RUSSIA-TRUMP CAMPAIGN COLLUSION

And then she went "off-topic"...

  • *SANDBERG: THE WORLD IS STILL RUN BY MEN, WE NEED TO DO BETTER
  • *SANDBERG: DIVERSITY IS KEY TO ECONOMIC GROWTH
  • *SANDBERG: PEOPLE AROUND HARVEY WEINSTEIN SHOULD HAVE SPOKEN OUT
  • *SANDBERG: OCULUS GO $199 PRICE IS `STILL EXPENSIVE'

Some key excerpts...

"Things happened on our platform in this election that should not have happened, especially troubling foreign interference in a democratic election. We know we have a responsibility to do everything we can to prevent this kind of abuse."

"We really have to go after fake accounts,"

"In my meetings with the government yesterday, I talked about how we're fully cooperating with their investigation - Congress and the special counsel - we're giving our piece, but they can understand the whole picture. I reiterated that it's important they get the whole picture and explain that transparently to the American public. When they wanted to make a decision, we stand ready to help them."

"When you cut off speech for one person, you cut off speech for other people," she said. "The responsibility of an open platform is to let people express themselves. We don't check the information people put on Facebook before they run it, and I don't think anyone should want us to do that."

Something there for everyone - Democrats will be happy that she is cracking down on Russians... but sane realists will perhaps be appeased by her admission that censoring anything that you disagree with is not a good policy path to take.

Any censorship is too much censorship.

If someone breaks the law then you arrest them and charge them in a court of law.

LOL-  yes, we also can't remove fake accounts because then advertisers would realize that they're playing to a far smaller market than they're paying us for.......

More than half of MDs are women. According to Bureau of Labor statistics, half of all managers are women. I have worked in mostly female-run, female-dominated offices, and they were extremely discriminatory and un-diverse in almost all cases, with momma managers hiring / retaining almost all — if not 100% — fellow moms.

These moms invariably take a massive amount of excused time off, far beyond their PTO and maternity leave(s). I am talking [frequent] whole mornings, whole afternoons, whole days and whole weeks off for frivolous things, like baby travel soccer. They subject childless females to entirely different standards right down to the minute, when they even hire them outside of the youth-clique professions.

The issue of motherhood is almost always extensively discussed in interviews, with many jobs advertised as “best workplace for moms.” Workdays are full of mandatory, mom-bonding rituals, and enthusiastic participation in things like bulletin board decorating contests with a mommy theme is more important than account-generation numbers and account-retention numbers.

Women — specifically mommas — most certainly do run the world, and as in the days of aristocratic power couples in Old Europe, wealth has accumulated at the top due to assortative mating.

At the bottom, there is a growing group of single-mom serfs with monthly welfare that covers rent and groceries and child tax credits that max out at $6,269, along with married moms with spousal income and divorced moms with child support checks that cover rent, driving down wages and banding together in back-watching, absenteeism-friendly cliques to hurt the childless, single employees who have one stream of earned-only income to cover all bills.

These moms feel justified in their blatant, bullying and unprofessional ways because they are above criticism after taking on the title of mom and because only moms “need the money.”

By voting for Trump, I did not mean to vote for another Bill / Hillary-style child-tax-credit welfare plan to further rig the workforce for discriminatory mom gangs.

I certainly did not vote for Trump based on anything related to Russia. I do not think any American who voted for Trump was motivated by any ad placed by Russians on FB or anywhere else.

We voted for Trunp based on his promise to end the mass-scale, welfare-supported, illegal immigration that is driving wages down for American men in the same way that wages are driven down for women by hordes of welfare-buttressed mom workers who can afford to work for low pay due to welfare-financed housing and food and child tax credits that equal 4 months of wages in many jobs.

We voted for Trump to get legal immigration rates under control to 1) combat mass underemployment of US citizens and 2) prevent more needless victims of violent, non-citizen criminals who did not have to be here if the rule of law did not just apply to some citizens.

We voted for Trump to end the middle-class-killing offshoring of jobs.

We voted for Trump to protect the homeland from terrorism.

Gynocentrism is the name for it.  Started in the 60's and will be the downfall of our nation.  Niggers and Jews alone have done the most damage, however.

HoyeruNew's picture

very telling how you don't find the need to mention the welfare supported Lockheed Martin and Boeing and the welfare supported Military-industrial complex. Carry on.

Endgame Napoleon's picture

Yes, many industries enjoy layers of welfare or the run-off from welfare, like Big Agriculture. They want the EBT train to keep making stops.

But it is not just EBT that I am talking about. It is layers of welfare and tax-code welfare. Government just keeps adding layers for some of the poor, rigging the job market with a ton of subsidized workers who can afford to accept low pay because of the welfare and taxfare.

The whole economy is rigged, with government picking winners and losers. By their nature, manufacturers of military equipment would probably always be more entwined with government, even in a system that pretends to be so capitalistic, like this one.

But beyond issues like terrorism or crimes against children, should they really regulate FB or any such social media site? There is a free speech issue that she is making. It is also a matter of protecting customers. I do not have a site on there. I am childless and have no baby pics to post, nor do I have a business to promote anymore.

But, if someone had a site on there, advertising an online t-shirt store catering to customers in another country, would it really be FB’s responsibility to monitor the site to make sure the foreign government did not think they were trying to influence their citizens politically via promoting the store’s t-shirts? It seems kind of Big Brotherish. I do not agree with woman-oppression stuff, but she has some points on this. If they regulate them to the hilt, they’ll do the same thing to ZH and all of these other sites.

Yes Goyim cattle, god has spoken.

I see, so where it says "In God we Trust" it's a subclause of that? Now it makes sense, but where is the hate Russia part explained?

Even without an account, unless you kill all scripting they are still sniffin' at the bulk of everything you touch.

Sadberg needs to stop lying.

There's millions of fake and dead accounts.

And FB will "curate" whatever the fuck they want, lie about it or call it something else.

That's based on their past behavior and promising to never, ever, ever, do it again.

The Wizard's picture

Do you know what the term Semite means? These are Scriptural terms used in everyday English representing misnomers. Before using a term know the etymology of the word.

The reason I am asking this is most people who use the term anti-Semitic are Semites. Even the Satanic Edomites would be considered Semites.

Akzed's picture

"Semite" is not found in the Bible, so it isn't a "scriptural term."

Russia spent a few $thousand on internet ads. Compare that to the billions spent on political speech in 2016. The "Russia did it" thing, unfortunately, won't go away, but it looks more stupid every day.

LightBeamCowboy's picture

Ya gotta love whining about "election interference" coming from the Regime Change Capitol of the World. If you added up everything the US has spent meddling in other countries' political affairs via the CIA and Pentagon, it would be way more than the total national debt -- which is to say, we bankrupted ourselves with our meddling! Or, more accurately the House of Rothschild bankrupted the US getting us to do their meddling for them.

Time for everyone to leave Facebook. It needs to go the way of MySpace.

If there's not a viable alternative, people need to start making one.

Quick search comes up with the second biggest social media alternative being something called VKontakte. It's big in Eastern Europe and Asia. Has half a billion subscribers. Suppose to have better tech than Facebook, less ads, no censorship.

Dank fur Kopf's picture

Hmm looks like music streaming is built into that social media platform, so it's like Facebook and Spotify combined.

I wonder if these people hear how stupid they sound to the average American. Nobody except the extreme kooks on the left believe the Russian bogeyman narrative.

Gaius Frakkin' Baltar's picture

The only way to counter the Russian narrative is with allegations of Israeli interference which actually has some basis in reality.

Otherwise, the cuckservatives in Congress will be on the defensive for the next 3 years and end up snatching defeat from the jaws of victory once again.

As Twitter, Facebook must be assessed as subject to free speech laws since they have become the equivalent of people speaking their thoughts.

Sandberg is a bag of tricks, and frankly I have created several Facebook accounts over the years (no longer use it) so I could access Facebook, and all of them had fake names and pics.

I'm certain others have done that, and there are Facebook account farms churning them out to sell to people.
The question today is not about "fake accounts", it's about how many are real.
