Trump Recognizes Jerusalem As Israel's Capital; Middle East Prepares For Violence

Tyler Durden's picture

As expected, President Trump on Wednesday recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and announced plans to relocate the U.S. embassy there, a decision that is certain to inflame tensions in the region and throw a wrench in potential peace negotiations, paradoxically uniting the fractured middle east world against Israel and the U.S.

"I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Trump said shortly after 1pm in the White House.

Trump said the announcement “marks the beginning of a new approach to conflict between Israel and Palestinians.”

As discussed earlier, Trump’s move reverses decades of American policy in the Middle East and alienates regional allies, even as the president has made brokering an elusive Middle East peace deal a key goal.

“This is a long overdue step to advance the peace process and work towards a lasting agreement”, Mr Trump said in his remarks. He added that he was directing the US State Department to develop a plan to move its Israel embassy from its current location in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump framed the decision as a way to put his own stamp on one of history’s oldest conflicts.

“The record is in: after more than two decades of waivers, we are no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians,” the president said. “It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result."

The move showed Trump’s inclination to prioritize domestic politics over the desires of U.S. allies in the Middle East and Europe who warned the announcement could spark violence in a region that is already a powder keg.

"While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver," the president said. "Today, I am delivering."

It will hardly play out that way.

As Bloomberg notes, leaders across the Middle East, including from Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the Arab League have also spoken out against the plan, and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Trump’s plan a sign of U.S. “failure and impotence.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, warned him the announcement would have “dangerous” repercussions for regional stability. Separately, the Palestinian delegate to the United Kingdom said on Wednesday that President Trump's move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel signals "a declaration of war" in the region. “He is declaring war in the Middle East, he is declaring war against 1.5 billion Muslims, hundreds of millions of Christians that are not going to accept the holy shrines to be totally under the hegemony of Israel,” Manuel Hassassian told BBC 4 Radio's "Today."

The Turkish government’s spokesman on Wednesday said that the United States’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel will plunge the region and the world into “a fire with no end in sight”.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the “whole world is against” Trump’s move. He says that moving the embassy to Jerusalem would be a “grave mistake” and would “not bring any stability, peace but rather chaos and instability.”

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also blasted Washington's decision to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem as a display of incompetence. "That they claim they want to announce Quds as the capital of occupied Palestine is because of their incompetence and failure," Khamenei said, using the Arabic name for Jerusalem.

The Syrian government also weighed in on the planned move. "[The move] is the culmination of the crime of usurping Palestine and displacing the Palestinian people," a Foreign Ministry official told state news agency SANA.

Palestinian Christians in Bethlehem were spotted burning photographs of Donald Trump and holding signs reading “Move the embassy to your country, not ours,” and “Jerusalem, Palestine's heart, is not up to negotiations.”

The declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital carries deep symbolic significance and could have dangerous consequences. The competing claims to east Jerusalem, the section of the city captured by Israel in 1967, have frequently boiled over into deadly violence over the years. East Jerusalem is home to the city’s most sensitive Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites, as well as its 330,000 Palestinian residents.

The United States has never endorsed the Jewish state’s claim of sovereignty over any part of Jerusalem and has insisted its status be resolved through Israeli-Palestinian negotiation.

The mere consideration of Trump changing the status quo sparked a renewed U.S. security warning on Tuesday. America’s consulate in Jerusalem ordered U.S. personnel and their families to avoid visiting Jerusalem’s Old City or the West Bank, and urged American citizens in general to avoid places with increased police or military presence.

I guess now Trump has made the tough decision between choosing money or oil. Saudi Arabia will likely align more towards China now, hastening the end of the petro dollar.

Saud and Israel have been secret BFFs now for quite some time.
Israeli pilots have even been training Suadi fighter pilots.
They're thick as thieves.
The fact that they align more with China is unrelated.

Isn't that the truth AC.  It's about time there is a shake up that helps the only democracy in the region.  Islam is a religion of hate and war so it doesn't matter what others do.  They won't change their stripes.  The more land they are given, the more hateful they become.  The end game comes when Jesus returns and declares hateful Islam the religion of Satan.

Democracy? Ha Ha Ha Ha!  Only if you are Jewish. Rest of the rabble, back of the bus.

That's okay, the Palestinians living in Israel are making babies more than Jews, so Israel's days as an exclusive Jewish terror state are numbered.

It doesn't matter. Israel is an apartheid state where non jew representation is a sham.

it's possible some people have taken the hallucinations of others too literally.  the founders of modern israel apparently hoped they could chase out all the non jews.  it didn't happen.  near two decades of u.s. warmaking have run millions out of the region but not many palestinians.  and now with trump's brave, shrewd move in syria, the yinon plan reissued as the global war on terror is, at long last, beginning to wind down.

if, as seems possible, trump starts putting the blocks in place for a one state solution (palestinians become israelis as the israeli president reuven rivlin wants), we might actually have a u.s. government employee besides teddy roosevelt who actually deserves a prize for peace.

this recognizing of jerusalem as israel's capital truly seems to make sense in that context.

Since Islam is a Religion of Peace, we can all rest easy knowing President Trump's decision to name Jerusalem the capital of Israel will have no negative impact on peace in the middle east.

For what its worth I think this ends up making an Israeli/SA/US strike against Iran or even Hezbullah LESS likely (at least near term) - the reasoning is this:

The REALLY big loser here is Saudi Arabia. For a while there it looked like Israel and SA were dropping the mask and letting the world know they are best butt buddies - what with IAF supposedly running exercises in SA, and Mike Pompeo saying Israel & SA would set up a common command center, and with SA being so preoccupied with Lebanon which it doesn't even have a border with (but is Israel's main worry what with these battle hardened Hezbullah coming back from Syria loaded for bear).

It seems to me things were moving towards a combined Israel/SA attack against Hezbullah and/or Iran but Israel has now become radioactive again 9so to speak) and watch what SA does.

SA either backs away from Israel or people start to put two and two together and unmask the sordid little fact that the House of Saud was installed by the Anglo Zionists to the advantage of Israel all along. I also expect Israel to be low key for a while lest they fan Islamic tempers even more...

I think UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Egypt, Kuwait etc. a week ago were unlikely to go along with an SA alliance w/ Israel against Iran, much less so now and SA will need to act offended against their secret Zionist allies, so meethinks the Iran situation will cool down ALOT.

The other advantage of this move is that unless DJT is actually Jewish (which he might be), he pays off a lot of debt to Adelson by this action, and is a little freer to not kowtow to the Zionist - if he is so inclined.

We shall see and likely soon.

OH - and this article says Trump/Israel were condemned by SA officials - where, who?? Haven't seen any indications of that so far at least... (but they will show up I expect)

It's a bit of a dick-punch to Jordan, too.  They've been playing along on Jerusalem, trusting the promises they get from their great friend and benefactor, the USA.  Jordan is about the only stable country left there, and the one most-reliable ally the US has.  Or had, now that Trump has let them know exactly how little he values their allegiance.  At this point, Jordan has to be wondering why they've let the CIA and US Special Forces use their country as a base.

HowdyDoody's picture

A while back an Israeli 'diplomat' was expelled from Jordan after killing a couple of Jordanians who complained when he tried to stiff them over payments for some building works that he wanted done on an apartment he was renting. The Israeli dilomatic mission was expelled over that.

Jordanian companies have ended deals with G4S, a security firm involved in security in Israel.

Some US soldiers working at the KASOTC, where they train the 'carefully vetted moderate rebels', were killed in a drive-by shooting a while back.

We may have a ME war now,

But, look on the bright side, the Chump has given Nuttyyahu what he desperately needs - a 'get out of jail free' card - over the corruption investigations he is invovled in.

According to prophecy, Jerusalem will be trampled by the nations in the last days. Described by Joel, the army of things that scale the rooftops are not exactly described as human. The spiritual conflict is going to spill over into the physical realm. The previously unseen will be seen. The gibborim will be unleashed. Israel has not yet been purged of unbelief. Tremendous trouble for that land lies ahead.

Joel 2:

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.

Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.

Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.

They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:

Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.

They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.

10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining

It means that America has chosen to withdraw from picking sides between Israel and Muslims in general.

And the fact that Muslims actually care about what America does is that Muslim recognise America as their dominant superior leader because else they wouldn't care.

Trump did a wonderfull thing here and said that a country who exists for over 60 years can remain doing what it's been doing for over 60 years.

Muslims put America above the Koran by reacting like this because they wouldn't care.

It would be way more dangerous if Muslims wouldn't react to this news because that would mean "we don't care and will proceed with what we do".

It's finally clear that there has been drawn a real line in the sand against Muslim idiocracy and not an Obama line in the sand.

Next up should be political correctness that for my part can be thrown down the shitters.

And what do I as a Christian have to say about this?

Well.... They live there, I don't.

So it's THEIR CITY just like the city where I live is MY CITY in a way you can't call it your property but that you can call it yours as it's part of your roots. I'm Christian and my roots aren't in Jerusalem.

That's the same thing for all those Blacks in America who clain that their roots are in Africa... all bullshit. Their roots are in America and you shoudln't dress up to show you're an idiot.

This is a deliberate provocation by design to get the Palestinians to become more violent and desperate to the delight of the Israeli Defense Forces, who are more than happy to mow them down like grass.

Once the Palestinians escalate violence with the latest announcement, the IDF will respond, and this violence will provide an excuse for Israel to accelerate the timeline of Palestinian genocide and the building of more Israeli settlements and creating more Israeli 'lebensraum'.  The best thing the Palestinians can do is actually do nothing, and handle this diplomatically and don't play into the hand of the Khazars.

The Yinon Plan is playing out beautifully, while the rest of the world watches on the sidelines.

HRClinton's picture

First to pick up on an important piece, that was way to subtle in its implications for 99% of the peeps:

The peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians will not be determined (imposed) by outside forces, but by the Palestinians and Israelis.

The subtext is clear:

(a) If the Israelis cannot accept Palestinian demands, no one is to interfere and the US will make sure of it.

(b) If the Palestinians cannot accept Israeli demands, it will be the Palestinians (not the Oded Yinon settlers) who are unreasonable and intransigent.

(c) Last but not least, the US will not bomb Israel into submission, the way it bombed Serbia in the 90s, to allow a group of Muslims to have their own country.

Now that I've flagged this, let the usual ZH authors write an article, as though they were the first to think of this. (Snicker)

Respect no 'god' that asks you to bow your head or fall to your knees.

tudemonstro's picture

You have a mistaken view of Christianity.  Sadly and more importantly, you have a mistaken view of God.  He is not make believe.  Evidence of His being and His characteristics are all around you, yet you willingly refuse to see.

Want examples? Language, for one.  Language (be it spoken, or mathematical, or code, or chemical) always originates from an intelligent source (SETI, anyone?)  Language has a purpose.  Your words above have a purpose and intend to convey meaning.  To presume all these languages arise in a purposeless universe by chance, with no intelligent source, is folly.

Another example is DNA. DNA is a complex language that is found in all living things. It is a reality far above our human intelligence. It has purpose. To presume DNA arises in a purposeless universe by chance, with no intelligent source, is folly.

And finally, there is Love. Apart from a personal, loving God, there is no such reality as love.  In a purposeless, material universe, love is nothing more than chemical synapses.  It is not inspiring - for there is no purpose.  It is not significant - for there is no meaning.  It is nothing.

tudemonstro's picture

Argue with my points if you will, but in the argument you prove my point.  You may say that none of these are evidence of God that you must accept as true. You reject the silly, anti-intellectual notion that life has some overarching meaning and purpose.

But I would ask, to what end then do you argue? Your mind is at war with reality - for in the purposeful act arguing you reveal the hypocrisy of your purposeless worldview.

No, sir, the reality is that you are terribly mistaken. There is a God and you are his creation.  As such, you are subject to His rules, whether you agree with them or not. You cannot be unbound to obey His spiritual laws anymore than you can be unbound to obey the law of gravity. "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God." Hebrews 10:31

And yet, there is boundless grace and LIFE! for those who acknowledge their proper role before God and seek His face in humility. I pray that will be true of you someday.

DescendantofthePatriots's picture

I have a feeling this will have a catalyzing effect in the middle east. The individuals who never wanted peace will be galvanized into gathering together to make war against the state of Israel. That way, the US and Israel don't have to worry about ISIS-Al-Nusra-Hamas individuals hiding in elementary schools and hospitals, they can fight them outright.

veritas semper vinces's picture

Let's cut to the chase, shall we? I see many ignorant comments, like the famous"religion of peace".

The Arab/Muslim word is not a monolith, like the Christian one is not(there is the West:Catholic,Protestant, whatever ,who are allied with the chosen and the East:the Orthodox)

The Muslim are mainly:

-the Sunni and especially the Sunni branch of Wahhabi Takfiri Salafi ,with the CENTER and CAPITAL in Saudi Arabia,Qatar,UAE,Bahrain,Kuweit ,which ARE OUR ALLIES,and which have spread TERRORISM all over the world ,UNDER the DIRECT orders and coordination of the See Eye Ayy ,Em Eye 6 and Mo$$ad.The most important is Saudi Barbaria, the center of this terrorist ideology and OUR MAIN  ally ,as in the creation /support of the petro-f*cking-dollar.

-the Shia, mainly Iran(who are not Arabs,by the way),part of Syria, part of Bahrain(the one oppressed by the Sunni rulers, and the one having the oil),part of Iraq(the popular mobilization units ,which were instrumental in fighting the ISIS takfiri wahhabi terrorists(supported by US,UK,France,SA,Israhell and NATO). Houthi in Yemen,Hezbollah in Lebanon are also Shia. Those represent THE RESISTANCE to the Zionist movement. They are allied with Russia.Qatar and Turkey are realigning with them(and after this f*ck up by Jewmerica with Jerusalem) they will align even more with them.

You see how reality,if you understand it,comes to bite in the ass those talking about the Muslim as one block?

I think what our dotard did will unite more the Muslim world(and I'm talking about ordinary people) against the zionist oppressor. It will also remove any doubt what so ever of where the real loyalty of the US lies.

The question is what will SA(and Jordan ) do.They are backed into a corner.Their governments were covertly supporting US/Israhell. If they continue to do that overtly, they are done, because their population WILL oppose it and there are tensions already

THE BIG WINNERS today are :Iran,Hezbollah,Syria, the resistance because they proved to all the Muslims ONCE and for ALL that US is in fact UNCLE SHLOMO,the zionists' bitch and their fight against them is LEGITIMATE

Observe that the recent ban against those countries declared terrorist sponsors are against the RESISTANCE .It was the opening shot,in anticipation of the Jerusalem f*ck up.

Also the Pentagon declaring that they will stay in Syria as long as they wish.

And the Afghanistan increase in troops and moving of ISIS leaders there by the US army.Opening a second front against Iran. Preparing for war.

The dotard in chief was always a war candidate, like Hillary, only most failed to see it.
