Abrupt Iran Decision To Move Nuclear Production Deep Underground Dubbed "Provocation" By US
It always seems that just when there is a lull in news of geopolitcal tension, we get an update that the Iranian situation gets that more unstable. After a nearly year long hiatus brought courtesy of allegedly Israeli supervirus Stuxnet taking out Iran's entire nuclear infrastructure offline for many months, the topic of Iran's nuclear capability is once again back, and starting to stink up the join. The NYT has just reported that in an attempt to preempt a possible air strike by the US or Israel, "Iran is moving its most critical nuclear fuel production to a heavily defended underground military facility outside the holy city of Qum, where it is less vulnerable to attack from the air and, the Iranians hope, the kind of cyberattack that crippled its nuclear program, according to intelligence officials." Not surprisingly, Iran has ceased any ties with the US in terms of nuclear fuel delivery: "We will no longer negotiate a fuel swap and a halt to our production of fuel,” head of Iran’s atomic energy agency, Fereydoon Abbasi said “The United States is not a safe country with which we can negotiate a fuel swap or any other issue." Well, it took the US minutes to respond: "Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said that the Iranian plan “to install and operate centrifuges at Qum,” in a facility whose existence President Obama and Europeans leaders made public two years ago, “is a violation of their United Nations security obligations and another provocative act." Next up: an update of US Naval assets in the just passed week. Time to start focusing on those Straits of Hormuz again.
From the NYT:
The head of Iran’s atomic energy agency, Fereydoon Abbasi, spoke about the transfer in general terms on Monday to an official Iranian news service. He boasted that his country would produce the fuel in much larger quantities than it needs for a small research reactor in Tehran that produces medical isotopes.
The fact that Iran is declaring that its production will exceed its needs has reinforced the suspicions of many American and European intelligence officials that Iran plans to use the fuel to build weapons or to train Iranian scientists to produce bomb-grade fuel.
The time for "Kinetic" options is coming:
The officials involved in the discussions about Iran said the Bush White House asked the Central Intelligence Agency in the summer of 2008 to assess the feasibility of covert action to blow up or disable crucial elements of Iran’s nuclear facilities. But when the agency delivered the plans, they were quickly rejected, all the officials said, for fear that any kind of obvious attack on the facilities could touch off another conflict in the Middle East just as a new American president was assuming office.
The options were developed in part to assess whether a physical attack on the facilities would be significantly more effective than more subtle — and deniable — sabotage of the Iranian facilities, including cyberattacks. That presentation and subsequent discussions led to a detailed exploration of Iran’s vulnerability to a sophisticated cyberattack.
“There were a range of options from the highly kinetic to the other end of the scale,” one former official involved in the decision-making said, using the military’s jargon for the use of physical force against a target. The officials who described the discussions would not speak of the specific operations under consideration, which remain classified, but said that the Obama transition team had been fully briefed on the possibilities.
The only question is how hard will Israel push this time:
Early in 2008, the officials said, the United States denied a request from Israel for equipment that might have helped mount an air attack.
Vice President Dick Cheney was known to be a strong advocate of direct action against the facilities, either through covert means or by helping Israel build up its capability to strike. Mr. Cheney does not discuss the issue in his new memoir, published this week, other than to say that he favored an American military strike against Syria’s nuclear reactor in 2007, partly as a warning to Iran.
So just in time for the re-depression, time for war is here. Right on schedule.
And now, as promised, here is the updated US naval map.

no 10th imam hope and change. I had a few Guinness with him last night and he said piss on it, he's going New Orleans for a few weeks
On sober reflection, I'd rather see them pursue Nuclear weapons, than biological weapons.
That Insh Allah shit combined with biologicals scares the bejeezus out of me.
My government scares the shit out of me.
It should.
Even if you go and fight for your government, you should never trust it.
Mission accomplished, haha
yes we have no fanatics, religious or otherwise running our place do we
It's the twelfth Imam, verge
you've been jewfucked.
Have you ever met any persians? Do you know a fuckin thing about Iran other than what you were fed by a bunch of jew neocon talking heads?
Probably safer than delivering 20 more nuclear power plants to that oil-exporting country that staffed and sponsored 9/11 ....
Bin Ladens cousin could get into waste disposal - just mix the shite in the oil and sell it to the US. Two problems solved right there.
All of this news is really setting up Israel attacking Iran. As ZH notes in this headline any Israeli attack on Iran will have been "provoked."
Once again, I don't see how a pre-emptive attack on Iran can be justified when Israel has 400+ nuclear weapons. Even if Iran developes 1-10, are they really going to even consider using them in an offensive attack?
I'm not defending Iran, but all they're trying to do is gather a little respect. Would Israel think twice about attacking if they knew that legitimate retaliation was a possibility?
Israel would have attacked already if they thought there wouldn't be retaliation. They might in desperation at some point, just like with Syria, however. Just a single strike, enough to set the program back to zero again. I think they haven't done it already because no one in the west is backing them, even under the table.
If adimajacket poops to many times the US will consider it "Provocation"
the not so migh... @13:05,
Iran is a threat to the entire ME.
w/ Nuclear weapons.
Why do they keep pusing, and pushing, and pushing?.
Insanity. They are just asking for it.
Iran has thousand sof missles aimed at persian gulf refinaries, they can make oil price go up 400% in 5 minutes.
meizu,@13:19,
YEP, and when they do, they will be bombed into Hell, and maybe not w/ just JDAMS.
And Cruise Missles.
You think Iran is a third world country? Iran has the most powerful military in the middle east, rival that of israel. Iran has de facto control over Iraq and large part of Afghnistan, Iran has control over Hezbollah and Hamas.
Iran has the most powerful military in the middle east, rival that of israel.
What fucking planet are you on? Israel has 300+ nukes, the means to deliver them, and most of the latest US military hardware. Iran has a few F14's it can't get spare parts for, and a load of old Soviet crap.
No they can't.
They'd be lucky to hit the oilfield, much less the refinery.
Iran can even blow up oilfields and refinaries in Saudi Arabia.
they used this allready with Iraq, you really belive it will beiliavble now? They shot their load alleady for pre emptive war.
Doubtless an Israeli-Iran war has been "war-gamed" by a "think tank" or two. Anyone got any data?
Why do they keep pusing, and pushing, and pushing?.
right. After reading that insight into geopolitical realities I checked back to the appropriate reference point just to be sure. TOM & JERRY
"The series features comedic fights between an iconic set of enemies, a house cat and mouse. The plots of each short usually center on Tom's numerous attempts to capture Jerry and the mayhem and destruction that ensues. Since Tom rarely attempts to eat Jerry and because the pair actually seem to get along in some cartoon shorts, and they sometimes even put their differences aside whenever they have to, and it is sometimes unclear why Tom chases Jerry so much. Some reasons given may include normal feline/murine enmity, duty according to his owner, Jerry's attempt at ruining a task that Tom is entrusted with, Jerry eating Tom's master's food which Tom has been entrusted with safeguarding, revenge, Jerry saving other potential prey (such as ducks, canaries, or goldfish) from being eaten by Tom, competition with another cat, and Jerry ruining Tom's attempts to seduce feline femme fatales, which Jerry does either out of disgust, jealousy, or just to be mean." Pussy just got to be pusing
Clearly Tom was your guy. Bet you went with Foreman too!
Ali boom ba yay Snitchez!
Dos, the only nation that could be construed as a threat to the entire ME is the US.
Funny how Iran does all the pushing as told by the WESTERN media.
I betcha the CIA is cooking up another crazy Qdaffy rape kit shitpiece to toss out so the mouth breathers can lap it up. Maybe a combination of a rape kit and a rape room? Or maybe a rape incubator?
pods
rape assembly line with conveoyer belts and everything, the CIA , life of intrigue
pods,
While I can agree w/you in principle, WHY does the little dictator keep THROWING crap in the face of the entire world.
If your going to do what they said, just do it, and keep your PIE hole shut.
WHY advertise, and make a delicate situation more dangerous.
From anyone's perspective I do not see why,the old adage is let sleeping dogs lie.
You want to get bit, POKE It.
I am sick and tired of our trying to make the entire world ACCEPT our way of life.
My premise is live and let live.We should bring all our folks home, and mind our business.I am with ALL of you on the issue.
BUT, when you have a Belligerent little tyrant, ADVERTISING to the entire world his convictions and intents on the TOTAL destruction of an entire nation, and race, who has supplied more weaponry to our enemies than ANY other nation on earth, you must take a hard look.
If you want peace, shut your mouth, and stop the BRAVADO.
( add the fact that shooting hundreds /thousands of your own folks in the streets in the process just doesn't look good).
Well, I would take issue with almost everything you have said. Who is throwing crap? The US media. If you were trying to develop nuclear power with sabres rattling over your head every moment you would be foolish not to protect it. All the non-intelligence reports I have seen on Iran said they have achieved like what, 5-7% enrichment? That is a far cry from a bomb. And just so happens to be the neighborhood for power.
Add in that your grand promise to bring power to the people is constantly being sabotaged, like Stuxnet?
When you speak of the Belligerent little tyrant are you speaking of GWB? Or Om-my-god-ijad? I never heard him say he wanted to wipe out a nation nevermind a race.
Big stretch about the weapons. I will let you show a few reputable links for that instead of disproving.
The only remotely aggressive act that Iran has done was take over our embassy. But of course that was due to almost 30 years of oppression at OUR hands.
Have not also seen clear evidence of shooting thousands in the streets either.
How is it BRAVADO if someone else is always spouting their mouth off about you? And in Iran's case, it is almost without fail the western media who is spouting off about Iran and their war machine. We even beat THEIR war drum when they refuse to play along.
I am with you about bringing the troops home. In fact, by my ideals, the constitution mentions nothing about a standing army to begin with.
pods
you're a motherfucking idiot
t-minus how long until 'iran attacks us on our soil'?
this is just the boost the US economy needs!
I'd avoid to be in any major American city by September 11th.
The assassin Barama, yes assassin!
Those Somalia pirates, tap between the eyes, Barama. OBL, tap between the eyes with concrete boots, deep sixed at sea, Barama. Onward to Libya, secret operation assassinate Ghadafi, Barama. Next up Somalia, Syria, Pakistan onward Iran. Barama the Nobel Peace Prize assassin. Did I mention he kills countries and jobs too?
a walking Oseal Team6
I can see a surgical strike by Isreal on the complex, to collapse the tunnels which will bring us even closer to the regional ME war that some have foretold. Isreal will be condemned, Iran will rage about suicide attacks on Isreal and US Soil, China will ask for a UN resolution against Isreali actions and tensions will spike in the Straits when Iran tries to close it down which will involve the US Naval forces keeping it open.
All drama which may not have the effect of what else may come.
I can see another terrorist attack on New York or some other major US City that will help fan the flames of war, but we have more important problems here at home with poisoned water supplies that will likely be blamed on terrorists but which in fact may be the results of our own homegrown actions (fracking). I don't like the direction my thoughts are taking on this but it makes one start to think about our desperate search for energy near Yellowstone and some vague thoughts about world wide starvation due to a crop failure in the northern latitudes.
Iran is going to build whatever it takes to "not be afraid" as they rebuild their Great Empire and it may well be that China is giving them some help in return for oil contracts. There are two strong forces wrestling for control in Iran and I'm not sure that either of them has the "maturity" to be holding the nuclear option card. (Not that we necessarily do either, I'm just observing here). The driving force in Iran seems to be a deep and blind hate for Isreal and Jews among the controlling parties, the average person could probably care less, concerned more with day to day living.
Can we afford to have someone of Iran's caliber in control of even a primative nuclear weapon? Nukes don't make regimes any more responsive to the needs of their people, it usually makes them even more paranoid and desperate. Yeah, I see the irony in that observation too
And september 11 false-flag attack right on the corner.
This shall be an interesting fall.
I made a wager with my Assyrian Father-In-Law that we would enter Iran within a year.
Sucker bet. That Kruggerand is going to look fantastic in my safe.
Its not so hard to move photoshopped facilities deep deep deep underground - where they will be safe.
The End game is Israel attacking USA and congress will vote in faviour of it.
Jeeze, how could Iran not trust us when we put them on our facebook "friends" list, then gave them cash for weapons and anti terrorist activities and then paid a "settlement" and apologized for past criminal attacks-and then stabbed them in the back by siding with jihadi rebels and bombing the shit out of their water, power and oil infrastrucure?
What gives?
Don't they understand we want to be "friends" and come in peace?
Iran wants to knock off our electronic grid send us back into the stone age first, then come after us with all their roudy friends
A LEO nuclear detonation would go a long way to accomplishing that.
Of course, it would invite a nuclear response, so they might be slow to pursue that.
When you say LEO (low earth orbit) are you talking a true orbit? In theory I Iran would launch a satellite type rocket with a nuke on board and wait for it to pass over the US and detonate it? Seems like it would take a pretty good sized nuke at that altitude to deliver a strong enough EMP to accomplish a national level grid failure...
You are looking the wrong way.
Think death of satellites.
Damn near all of them.
But, I think even France would respond with nukes over that kind of act.
Military men are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy. -- Henry Kissinger
Considering how many humans have lived throughout the centuries, y'all have an amazingly short list of quotations.
where's cog dis?
"praise the lord and pass the ammo"
NWO --how to get that pesky population down? isreal bomb iran/ iran bomb greater ME/ US bomb more ME/ china bomb pacific/ US bomb pacific/ russia bomb europe/ us bomb russia china /russia china bomb us /us bomb china russia ....poof ! pop cut by 3/4. meyhem/ chaos== NWO... all pieces on an iradiated chess board....the end game can come quickly.
I'm thinking it's time for them to spring the "we're being invaded from space" program. That should be the final nail in the constitutional coffin as the mouthbreathers clamor for protection...no matter what the cost.
Puhleeze, Iran is a made man under the protection of China and Russia. There aint shit that America or particularly Israel can do without massive consequences. Total destruction to Israel being the more likely outcome or possibly even a nuclear exchange between Russia/China and the USA as the least likely outcome. As long as Iran doesn't start the fight or do something to piss off their benefactors then they are golden for life. Israel can piss and moan all they want but in the end that's just how it is.
you're an idiot, you know that? Neither Russia nor China would risk open war with the USA and they would under no circumstances attack Israel, nor does either nation have the capability to do so other than with ICBMs.
Ladies and gentlemen, please focus on my right hand, in which I hold what appears to be a nuke. Do not focus on my left hand - nothing there at all, certainly no chemical or biological weapons.
FUCK the usa Govt.
Fuck Israel .Period.
To judge the people of Iran by the actions of their government would be
like judging American people by the actions of their corrupt government.
The vast majority of Iranians admire the western culture, but they are ruled
by a small fanatic group of leaders.
Horse shit. They had no problem banding together and kicking out the Shah did they? They overthrew him and the CIA and the vaunted Savak and the whole bureaucracy, and all the other evil (US) sponsored and related forces that held them in perpetual horror. I have to say as a person born in 1958 in California it is all my fault, I am totally to blame for it. Unfortunately I have no money to give over to make reparations.
So here is the thing, if the people were so oppressed how is it they managed to kick out the ruler in a weekend? If the people are so good at kicking out bad and unwanted rulers they must ergo want the rulers they have yes? If those rulers seek nuclear weapons to do evil things outside their borders and it is only a matter of time then how goddamned stupid would we be to wait till they use them before we act? And it will not be Israel they use them on but us or our next biggest ally in Europe that they can reach. They know the only reason Israel can exist is our umbrella, hit a US city and watch as support for Israel utterly disappears. That is their plan. I would say they miscalculate, but then we did nothing in1979, and we will not even after they nuke one of our cities.
Iran is a stinking cesspool. And if an otherwise liberal democrat with progressive leanings says this you know it really must be true, end their dreams of power and end their nuclear ambitions, or pay the price for failing.
The best part is that if they are really not seeking weapons of mass destruction it would be easy enough to prove. Only a total moron would believe at this point they are not making bombs, and you can hope they are making them to counter threats real or imagined, but I say they are making them to use against the USA, and that the USA will do nothing till at least one of our cities is gone.
Reminder: Navy personnel are not suppose to be looking at this post. :-0 C
i am a libertarian zionist and i couldn't agree with you more.
liberal democrat zionism is self delusional.
jews who support the existance of israel need to wake up and start supporting an honest economy not based solely on export of fiat around the world.
i'm all for capitalism, and someone has got to control the means of capital. but that doesn't give the country with this privelege the right to devastate the world with fraud by printing.
in the end the democrat and republican zionists will back themselves into a corner and be rolled over when all the people who they used to consider fringe anti-semites, start becoming a problem for them.
there is nothing wrong with a colonial outpost in the mid east. there is so much right with it.
but its survival should not be equated with the need to print money. israel can survive without financial hegemony of the u.s. and it must learn to survive with less financial military support if it is to stand on its own two feet during the uncertain future ahead.
iran...IS going to attempt to get nukes because the u.s. ( more than israel ) is trying to invade syria and then iran to further spread its military power by eliminating rivals.
this is a game of chicken. either the iranian regime will fall, or they will get nukes. or maybe like russia, they will get nukes and then fall due to internal problems.
but those are what the 3 options look like.
Report: IAEA 'increasingly concerned' about possible Iran nuclear arms(CNN) -- An International Atomic Energy Agency report, dated and leaked Friday, said Iran continues to defy U.N. resolutions aimed at curbing its nuclear program and cited "increasing" concerns it may be developing nuclear weapons.... "The agency is increasingly concerned about the possible existence in Iran of past or current undisclosed nuclear-related activities involving military-related organizations," the report states.
Specifically, it cites "new information" received by the IAEA "related to the development of a nuclear payload for a missile."
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/09/02/iran.nuclear.report/
------------
This is one of the strongest warnings issued by the IAEA in regards to Iran; I do believe that Iran will be attacked eventually, such reports provided ample cover for such attack, it is also worth noting that Sarkozy warned few days ago about a possible attack as well.

(followup to my previous comment)
America isn't interested in Iran's nuclear development.
America is interested in Iran's oil. Not from a "we want it" standpoint. From a "stop China from getting it" standpoint.
America wants to cut off China's oil supplies. It's why America conned NATO into invading Lybia. It's why America keeps up the cover story about Iran's nuclear development. It's really about interfering with China's oil supplies, and Iran is China's 3rd biggest oil supplier.
In a lesser sense it's about keeping oil priced in US dollars, to keep the US dollar as world reserve currency. It's why America invaded Iraq. Sadam Hussein was moving to the Euro for oil pricing.
America is deathly afraid of oil producing nations moving away from the US dollar. If one oil producing nation does it succesfully, others would quickly follow, the US dollar would soon fall from WRC status, and America's economy (and financial system) would collapse. It would be the end of America as a superpower.
China is building currency agreements with other nations rapidly, but Americans are not aware of it since American media avoids that subject.
China has a currency agreement with Russia, trading oil in Russian & Chinese currency, completely avoiding the US dollar. If Russia does that across the board with other oil customers, stops using the dollar completely, other oil producing nations would qiuckly switch too.
Of course America won't invade Russia for moving away from the dollar. No way. But yes, America will invade small defenseless oil producing nations like Iraq and Lybia if they mention pricing their oil in some other currency, as both did.
Now Iran is in currency negotiations with China, talking about moving away from the US dollar on oil. And look how America responds. Threatening invasion.
Of course it won't happen. It's just a lot of sabre rattling. China has drawn the line at Iran and told America don't cross it, or they'll kill America's financial system, and yes they can do it.
Finally someone is standing up to America the worldwide bully. It's China. We should be thankful, not criticizing. We should take China's side on this. America, stay out of Iran, leave China's oil supplies alone, and stop this "nuclear threat" nonsense.
Incidentally, China and Russia acting together are one hell of a lot bigger nuclear threat to America than Iran is.
Just a word to the wise.
its very simple, Iran is one of or possibly the last country without a central bank (central planner). Iraq and Afghanistan were void of one also and both now have one in place. all else is just misdirection by the world bankers. once all countries have central planners in place they will lend them ludicrous amounts of of money that they know they can never repay and then force them to pledge state assets (oil, manufacturing plants, railroads, titles to housing and land etc.) as collateral for even more loans which they know will not be repaid (think of Greece for instance). The bankers have never cared about money, its about owning the worlds hard assets. Everything thing else is just mindless chatter to them.
Iran had better realise that if it creates one nuclear weapon and then uses it anywhere, like against the free state of Israel, that they will find there is no cave deep enough for them to hide. If IRAN is not obliterated with Israeli/US nuclear weapons, the country will feel the wrath of the greatest military the entire Earth has ever seen. One way or another their entire military, political, industrial, oil, telecom and energy systems will be 'wiped' off the map. Regardless of what you think, the US Military is the meanest, most ruthless, blood thristy beast on the planet that will not be stopped.
US military is over rated, see Afghnistan.
All these comments, hundreds of them, and yet they are like popcorn in a movie theater, very expensive and all tasty and salty but with no nutrition.
I had not commented on this subject till now because I believe that the question of Iran is one that generates more argument than global warming and the fed put together. With less evidence on either side.
Iran uses Islam as a shield, any attack on Iran is an attack on their religion. Any criticism of Islam is an act of war against Iran.
Let us talk about acts of war for a minute, when the Pahlavi dynasty was deposed the US embassy was taken hostage. In violation of all civilized treaties, the personal treatment of the Americans taken was appalling. That embassy was sovereign ground of the USA, taking the employees and consular officials and holding them for more than a year was an act of war. But the spineless carter allowed it to go on through the election which the fascists knew they would win even with a clown like Raygun as their candidate because we all knew war with Iran was inevitable, and just.
The day Raygun was inaugurated the hostages were freed, and the right has felt empowered since, but the truth is that carter was never going to attack the Iranians, he was just going to let them rot our embassy people till they grew up for 20 or more years. Eventually they would get tired of putting us on the spot and hand them over with no news coverage to speak of. But, the Iranians knew Raygun did not care about the fate of the hostages, that he considered their taking as an act of war and those fuckers turned over the hostages the day he was sworn in. This was the biggest and best victory for Raygun, and he had nothing to do with it, it was the fear of him that drove the Iranians to end the situation.
I have not forgotten that we are still essentially at war with Iran. And the Iranians remind us every day how much they hate us, and how bad feelings are all our fault, in spite of their own wickedness, not a word I use lightly.
I do not fear a war with Iran, they are the bug and we are the windshield. I really hope for the people there that they join the modern world and overthrow their theocratic dictatorship, that would be good, they can get a bit secular and join business and citizenship of the world.
But, and I have to stress this big but, if they have designs on regions outside Iranian borders, if they even dream of getting nuclear weapons given the things they have said and done, then as peaceful as I am I say nuke their fucking asses back to the stone age. We have contained them till now, but they say every day what their commitment to the destruction of Israel is, and death to America of course. That might just be rhetoric until they get a bomb. The very fact they are trying to build one given the words they use and the instability they provoke in Syria and Palestine and Iraq, to me that is justification enough to end them. I have said for more than 30 years that Iran was our real enemy, I still think it true. Not because the people deserve to be roasted in a thermonuclear fireball, but they had great success removing a very bad guy and his secret police, they have a history of being able to do it, yet they tolerate this garbage from the mullahs and their sheep like president. I can only conclude that they want what they have, after all we are backing the current regime are we? Just as we might have played a role in putting Pahlavi on the peacock throne, but we did not back him up as we were claimed to have done. Had we wanted him in charge of Iran he would be.
No matter, nuke the bastards and let the chips fall where they may. The world would be a better place with an Iran that was free and open and got along with others but it will not, so I feel nothing for them but pity. If there was something I could do to change the situation for the better I would, I would give my life to keep the peace, but we all know they want nothing of it, better to do them now than later.
By the way, this is not a joke, I am not kidding and the threat is both real and urgent. Persia has a long history, but Iran has no future.
Another armchair warrior who want American children to die for Israel.
"you have always been peaceful" and "you would give your life for peace"? but then you advocate killing millions of men, women and children in the same breath. you are a joke. you do not even believe in your own values. the reasons you gave for nuking them could easily apply to the U.S.. Just look at the leaders we follow and the aggressive words they have espoused. how many civilians has our country killed in its brief history? MILLIONS!. I still love and have hope for my country, which is more than I can say for you.
Transfer of the centrifuges from Natanz to Qom will be monitored by US and Israeli satelites.
What worries me is the temptation to do an easy bombing run (more likely by Israhel than the US) when that window of opportunity is opened.
