Alleged Mastermind Behind Israel Bus Explosion Identified As Swedish National Mehdi Ghezali

Tyler Durden's picture

The latest development in yesterday's Bulgarian bus bomb explosion, is the identification of the alleged bomber. According to Times of Israel he is Mehdi Ghezali, "reportedly a Swedish citizen, with Algerian and Finnish origins. He had been held at the US’s Guantanamo Bay detainment camp on Cuba from 2002 to 2004, having previously studied at a Muslim religious school and mosque in Britain, and traveled to Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He was also reportedly among 12 foreigners captured trying to cross into Afghanistan in 2009."

There's more:

Sofia also reported that the Bulgarian Interior Ministry managed to recover the fingerprints of the bomber, which they submitted to the FBI in the United States and the international police organization Interpol. The FBI and CIA joined Israeli and Bulgarian officials in investigating the attack.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told Sofia that DNA tests were being run to determine the identity of the Caucasian man, who the minister described as casually dressed with nothing suspicious about his appearance to set him apart from the crowd of people at the airport.

What is curious is that this is not the first time Mehdi has made headline news. Below is a lengthy exposition on the Swede from 2009 via the Weekly Standard:

With a black baseball cap pulled tight over a mop of stringy long hair and a patchy, close-cropped beard, Mehdi-Muhammed Ghezali looked more like a Metallica roadie than a disciple of Ayman al-Zawahiri. He addressed the scrum of reporters in a clipped, heavily accented Swedish and accused the American government of wrongly detaining him for three years and "physically and mentally" torturing him. A book about his experiences was in the works; a documentary crew, cobbling together a film about American human rights abuses, had requested an audience; and his legal team was plotting a lawsuit against Donald Rumsfeld. It was 2004, and Ghezali was a free man.

In late 2001, Ghezali, a Swedish national, had been detained during the battle at Tora Bora, Afghanistan, handed over to the American military, and sent to the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay. According to his lawyers, he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Although he spoke none of the local languages, Ghezali told his captors, in the midst of the Taliban's retreat into the mountainous hinterlands of Afghanistan, he had crossed that country's border with Pakistan to study Islam.

After an intense lobbying effort by Swedish prime minister Göran Persson--and a vague promise that the country's intelligence services would keep a watchful eye on him--Ghezali was delivered to Sweden (on the government's private Gulfstream jet). The Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter noted that Ghezali had achieved "rock star status" upon returning to his homeland, a native victim of America's rapacious imperialism. And after two-plus years in isolation, the emotionally fragile former prisoner would be happy to discover "that a majority of Swedes were glad that he was home."

That his story was threaded with head-scratching omissions and inexplicable gaps in chronology--the years in Cuba were, apparently, not enough time to concoct a consistent narrative--seemed to have little effect on his credibility. To his supporters, he was merely a bit player in a larger morality play. But even his most credulous supporters winced when, during a press conference in his hometown of Örebro, Ghezali offered the following opinion of Osama bin Laden: "I don't know him as a person and therefore can't pass judgment on him. I don't believe what the Americans say about him."

Sweden's justice minister ruled out prosecuting Ghezali, and the story faded from the public consciousness. But in a country with a significant Muslim minority, it was perhaps inevitable that the foreign ministry would find itself in a similar situation again.

In 2007, the Swedish government interceded on behalf of 17-year-old Safia Benaouda, a Stockholm native and convert to Islam, after she was arrested and jailed by the Ethiopian military, then battling Somali Islamists. Ethiopian officials told Sweden's foreign minister, Carl Bildt, that Benaouda had fled Somalia after the defeat of the Islamic Courts Union, on whose behalf she was accused of waging jihad, and had been detained with other fighters after crossing the border into Kenya.

According to the Stockholm-based newspaper Aftonbladet, Swedish diplomats engaged in "discreet meetings with the Pentagon, tribal leaders, and African government officials" to secure her release. Benaouda's mother, chairman of the Muslim Council of Sweden, wrote that her daughter was questioned by members of the CIA and beaten by guards--accusations amplified by the Associated Press. After her release, Benaouda went further, claiming that she was tortured in custody, a measure "planned and orchestrated by the Americans or other western interrogators." The claim ensured her permanent victim status in Sweden.

The cases of Ghezali and Benaouda--frequently invoked in the Swedish media as examples of America's tyrannical war on terror--were unrelated. There was no indication that the two had ever met or that they belonged to the same Scandinavian cell of Islamic militants. But the two innocents abroad, curious students of fundamentalist Islam, would soon find each other.

According to reports in the Swedish media, Ghezali and Benaouda were arrested last week in Pakistan--together, travelling with a multinational group of extremists--having crossed the border from Iran on their way to the al Qaeda stronghold of Waziristan. Pakistani sources claim that the group was carrying $50,000 in cash, maps indicating Western embassies, and--every religion student's best friend--an explosives belt. One of the suspects, according to a report in the Swedish newspaper Expressen, chewed up the SIM card of his cell phone before he was taken into custody.

Why would they coordinate with them, other than to set them up?

I am impressed that (maybe no one) has stooped low enough to posit the idea that this accused bomber was a wag-your-dog's tail that took everyone's attention away from the world-wide Jewish conspiracy to steal as much money as possible, break as many laws and regulations, bribe and pay off all of Congress; all lead by the Supremo Head Commander of the Protocols of the Elders of Federal Reserve, Rabbi Ben Bernanke.

Meanwhile back in Gotham City, I am equally amazed at how ignorant some of you bozos really are about the role Iran has played for decades in fostering and supporting various Islamic terrorist groups, none more important than Hezbollah.  And after the usual suspects satisfy their childish need to throw garbage at the words I just wrote I will remind myself that even were God forbid, Israel and the "Jewish problem" erased by some monster like Hitler, the Arabs and Persians would spend the next several hundred years slaughtering each other without end.  This truth you can take to God's bank and get paid interest on.  Of course the Jewish problem sticks around and everyone knows that they own and run Hollywood and Wall Street and that the Rothschild Family (perhaps the single largest family fortune in world history) runs the Black Cabal to control all the smaller orbits of lesser controllers....we all know this to be unimpeachable facts.....

And at that point....I say that I grow a bit tired of the ZH crowd.  There is FAR too much blather instead of digging into verifiable facts.

Persians have a nation. The Arabs? Not so much. The Brits fucked it up. But first they had to win another war before they could completely mess up the ME for good. Who started the war and who entered the war at the last minute when all the assets were placed strategically? Lastly, which group financed both sides of the war and came out with their own nation state in the end?

The devil, huh? What is the devil? Do you have any idea? Is he real or is he a figment of someone's imagination?

I might add that given the opportunity Muslims and Hindu's might decide to nuke each other and in doing so probably kill 100 million people.  One paramount reason Iran is so very dangerous is not because their PM makes endless threats to destroy Israel. It is because Iran is intent on becoming the local bully by nuke super power status and they don't care who stands in their way.  The Russian's, fools again that they are, know full well what the Iranians are up to and what their long term goals are, because the Russian's basically supplied the nuclear capability.  The country that is many times more fearful of Iran than Israel is Saudi Arabia and in a smaller way, because they are smaller entities...the countries around SA.  Syria is busy ridding the world of Syrians and Israel is quite happy about that, their most fearsome foes on the battlefield.  What we also don't properly appreciate is how very important the civil war in Syria really is to changing the entire regions infrastructure of political and religious sect alignments.  Were the Syrians to topple Assad, which appears only a matter of time, we do not know if the victor of the slaughter will be friendly or wary of ties to Iran?  Were the newly minted vultures in Syria to back away from Iran, that country would effectively be robbed of its single strongest ally (outside of Putin).  The possible reality of Iran being behind this new bombing is not a one off event but is intricately woven into their agenda.

Hey there good buddy "pin-PRICK", Iran is building POWER STATIONS. They have EVERY right to build POWER STATIONS. If they wanted nukes they'd get them from Russia or China. They don't.

Stop trying to feed your bullshit lines. ISRAEL is the evil in that part of the world. Zionism is the evil worldwide.

I suggest that you stop using reduced uranium in your sphincter inserts; they are seriously messing up your reptilian lobes.

Power stations? Oh, you mean like the type that Israel eliminated in southern Syria a few years ago that was obviously a nuclear faciility, provided by North Korea, most likely with add on's from Iran and people associated with A.Q. Khan's elite group of nuke proliferation trolls.  If you are really serious in your conviction that Iran is innocently busy building power plants then I feel for your family who will have to come visit you in a padded cell from time to time.  No one else outside of Iran's barking dog regime believes this for one moment.  But, of course it makes perfect sense when you think out of your anus to posit that a country that never ceases to announce that Israel will be destroyed entirely is intent on only building (nuclear) power plants in a country awash in adequate crude oil to run power plants till kingdom come?  And of course everyone knows that there is a kiosk at the Russian and Chinese nuclear bomb plaza where rogue nation states can plunk down some hard cash and walk away with a voucher to have a nuke delivered.  Common knowledge....of course.

I suggest that you go on a deep cleanse and rinse your brains out of your ass.

so this guy, with past connections to extremists, after doing a turn at gitmo gets arrested in Pakistan after crossing from Iran, shows up one week later and blows up a bus full of Israelis.

this smells like shit on hot pavement. first, the ISI and the CIA are married and nothing happens in Pakistan without the ISI and by extension, the CIA knowing about it, certainly not the arrest of somebody who already had a history of being involved with such activities to the extent that he ended up with a two year Cuban vacation. common sense dictates that if this person was arrested traveling with other extremists and explosive belts from Iran to Al Qaeda central, that should have bought him some hard time at a prison in Pakistan, maybe even a return ticket to gitmo.

instead he's spraying body parts all over a Bulgarian airport a week later, which means he was out of Pakistan pretty damn quick. and don't play that the ISI and the CIA are on the outs bullshit, most of those drone strikes in Pakistan are CIA not military, those drone attacks don't happen without the full support and cooperation of the ISI, they are absolutely playing on the same team.

this guy had help getting to where he was going and I seriously doubt the Iranians have that kind of pull in Pakistan seeing as their role and influence as regional bogyman is overstated and exaggerated by western media on a daily basis.

convenient this though, with all the blood lust being drummed up by BN lately and Hillary just itching to have her own Bosnia moment, apparently Libya just left her wanting another fix and with China and Russia spoiling her fun in Syria, might as well focus on Iran seeing as they are the big prize anyways.

now this episode might not be enough to kick things off in earnest, I think more will be needed for that, but it certainly does give the Israelis a bit of perceived moral high ground to shoot from, and once they start our lemming politicians will trip over themselves to volunteer our blood and treasure in the service of Israel, cause you know, we owe them that for some fucking reason.

besides what good is it to have half the navy in the region if all they are going to do is just sit there?

The bank robbery in Albufeira netted 600,000 euros while the jewelry theft in Playe de la Galé netted 5,000 euros. Ghezali and his partner were released from prison on 12 June 2000 after having spent 10 months in a Portuguese prison without being charged, and returned to Sweden.

And.....might I ask when Iran EVER admitted that they were behind a terrorist attack anywhere? Ditto for Hezbollah.  For those who so admire Hezbollah or Iran I would only wish you to go live in Lebanon or Iran and don't come back.  A pox on those people. Grotesque lovers of death and martyrdom.

What's the tally on murders in Iraq as a result of America's search for WMD that they knew never existed?

When you are the school yard bully and your front man is Israel, don't be surprised when little fella sneaks up behind you and wallops you in the back of the head with a shovel

Not that it matters much....but I totally condemn the Rumsfeld/Cheney/Wolfowitz war against Iraq.  They are as infamous in my view as Sadaam.

Wow, the guys sure changed from the other pictures they published of him:

http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/watch-footage-of-suspected-suicide-bomber-in-attack-on-israelis-in-bulgaria-1.452240

People don't blow themselves up unless they are in inconceivable situations like Afghanistan, Iraq....Even there, people said that bombs were being placed under cars, etc.

This is more Israel nonsense, and Israel probably killed these people to insight more violence. Apparently they are using this to prepare for another invasion of Lebanon. This time their IDF commander said it would be much worse than last time and they will be bombing heavily populated areas. Israel wants some of the land there (water - Latani River) and to further isolate Iran for future bombing there.

(AGI) Stockholm - Sweden has denied reports that Mehdi Ghezali was the suicide bomber behind yesterday's attack in Burgas. The Swedish intelligence (SAPO) denied that Mehdi Ghezali, a Swedish citizen of Algerian origin, was the suicide bomber who blew himself up at the Burgas airport in Bulgaria yesterday killing at least 7 Israeli tourists. "We don't know this name", SAPO chief Claes Ohison told newspaper Expressen adding that he could not "provide any further information". The 'Times of Israel' website was the first to indicate Ghezali as the suicide bomber, quoting sources of the Bulgarian press. Mehdi Ghezali is thought to have been detained in Guantanamo between 2002 and 2004, after studying at a mosque in the UK and travelling to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. In 2004, he was handed over to the Swedish authorities which, however, didn't bring charges against him. Ghezali is also believed to have been part of a group of 12 people arrested as they were trying to enter Afghanistan in 2009.

" American officials on Thursday identified the suicide bomber responsible for a deadly attack on Israeli vacationers here as a member of a Hezbollah cell that was operating in Bulgaria and looking for such targets, corroborating Israel’s assertions and making the bombing a new source of tension with Iran."

Frankly, I don't care if in the fullness of time it is proven that Hezbollah was not involved.  Whether it was another terrorist group, it will not bring back the dead.  Our world is turning into a world wide mad house.  See what an American PhD student did at a Batman film.....this, quoting Leonard Cohen, is the Future...."....and it is murder".

Finally got account approved here, so sorry for posting late.

FOR THE RECORD: The Swedish security police confirms the identified person is NOT the bomber!

Normal media actually verifies news stories before accusing individuals in media. It turns out the source of the namning of this individual is actually the forum section of the Bulgarian online newspaper that first posted the news. So it was all rumour and SÄPO could deny it was this individual when first called by media within the hour. Presumably Swedish Security Police has good knowledge about the whereabouts of the individual and therefore knows he has not been blown up in Bulgaria.

You may not believe in blowback, but Ron Paul did describe exactly this. Too bad none of his audience were on the bus, that would get their attention.
