Art Cashin On #OccupyWallStreet, Marlon Brando And Ann Coulter

Tyler Durden's picture

The daily dose of truth from the UBS veteran, as indispensable as morning coffee. Today, he covers Steve Jobs passing, the "Barroso" market, and the Occupy Wall Street movement in his unique and traditionally laconic way.

On Barroso Bobbing, and on market moves:

Barroso Bobs About But Bulls Hang On With “They Finally Get It” Thesis - While there were several pieces of economic data here in the U.S., they served primarily as background static to the continuing drama playing out among the banks in Europe. As I have been saying for months - Europe is driving this bus.

Rather than going step by step and minute by minute through yesterday’s action, it might be better to try to get a general overview from 30,000 feet or so.

For many months now European authorities (and the world press) have been framing the very volatile and nervous trading in markets a “Greek” (or other sovereign) debt problem. Markets, on the other hand, have been yelling (and gyrating) saying - yeah, that’s right - long term - but you have a banking crisis - right now.

That’s why markets erupted in the final hour of trading Wednesday. Leaders began to talk about recapitalizing the European banking system - and quickly. Suddenly, markets said - “They get it. They finally get it.” They were going to look at the real problem, at last.

One of the things that probably caused that “Eureka” moment among European authorities may have been Dexia, the large but virtually unnoticed Belgian bank. Dexia, or at least the rumors surrounding Dexia, became the perfect poster child for the problems and risks surrounding European banking.

Since we first noted the Dexia rumors three days ago, the layers of the onion are being peeled away, one at a time. It had originally passed the stress test with flying colors. That raised questions about the validity of the stress tests. Next, there were reports that Dexia was highly leveraged, with at least one source saying it has twice the leverage of Lehman before the fall.

Then there was the risk of contagion. Rumors began to spread that Dexia was involved in U.S. municipal bond trading, in Guaranteed Income contracts, various annuities, and on and on. Traders felt they were reading a paper with a dateline of 2008.

So, with the eruption, or at least unveiling, of Dexia dropping a flaming example of the banking problem into the laps of the European authorities, markets felt assured that they could no longer ignore it or even postpone addressing it. That’s what caused the late Tuesday rally and the carryover yesterday. The action today and tomorrow may tell us a great deal about what kind of legs this action will have.

On Jobs:

This morning the papers, media and newsletter are filled with deserving tributes to Mr. Jobs. He was truly unique. My best recollection was when he described the MAC as the “computer for the rest of us”. He made technology that worked for you, rather than the other way around. From the MAC through the iPod, the iPhone; iTunes and the iPad, he made devices that looked and felt cool. He put us in “touch” with the world around us.

An innovator on the culture-changing level, his loss leaves us with nagging question - what if? We may get a hint of that when, and if, his revolutionary vision of the next TV is released.

He touched a generation on a personal level as may be seen in the tributes showing up on sidewalks outside Apple stores this morning. As the ancient Romans would say on the passing of a great commander - “Ave Atque Vale!” (Hail and Farewell!)

And on Occupy Wall Street:

Wall Street Protests - Two favorite observations on the vague and often conflicting “goals” of the protestors. First, from an FoF member:

The Occupy Wall Street protest is reminiscent of the scene in the 1953 film "The Wild One" where a young woman asks a motorcycle gang leader played by Marlon Brando, "Hey Johnny, what are you rebelling against?"

Brando deadpans, "Whaddya got?"

Then, from Ann Coulter:

I am not the first to note the vast differences between the Wall Street protesters and the tea partiers. To name three: The tea partiers have jobs, showers and a point.

The sad reality of OWS is that it has been co-opted by the Administration's lackeys; namely Move-on, Rathke, SEIU and other unions.   It could be one gigantic CIA pysop unless,of course, the attention is turned toward ocupying the FED or bringing nooses and guillotines to the Eccles Building.  Let's see if the intellectual shallowness of the protestors can recognize the true villain in this story; otherwise it is just another sheeple shearing operation to deflect from the criminality of the Creature from Jekyl Island and its corrupt 535.

Follow the money on these protesters. Who is paying for the free meals and free healthcare for these people? Who is publishing their "journal" just days after the movement began? Three names quickly come to the fore -- Soros, Tides Foundation (aka Soros), Open Society (also Soros). And SEIU leaders were the planners, according to their own words. And what are the goals of these? Destroy capitalism and the US government.

This can only end in tears! Wake up! Populist targeting Wall St is only a way of USING these idiots to advance their agenda of tyranny! Do NOT be deceived!

I don't think many yet get it how vast and deep is the resentment of middle class people for the status quo. The middle class finally gets it that it's standing on the edge of the economic abyss, and nobody cares. So they decided to make them care. That's all. There's really not much more to it than that, but the pro-status quo types will come up with "conspiracies", as they always fool a few.

The beauty of this movement is that it is decentralized so it cannot be decapitated.  TPTB and it's media have their underwear twisted because they can't define an enemy and it's agenda.  Therefore they cannot strategy and preplan to counter this uprising.  The movement is as diversified and nebulous as the people that make it up.  And it is growing.  Much like algae in a pond it will rob TPTB of the oxygen needed to live.  Keep your cool & keep em guessing. Brilliant.

“Private capital tends to become concentrated in few hands, partly because of competition among the capitalists, and partly because technological development and the increasing division of labor encourage the formation of larger units of production at the expense of the smaller ones.

The result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organised political society. This is true since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature.

The consequence is that the representatives of the people do not in fact sufficiently protect the interests of the underprivileged sections of the population. Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education).

It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights.”

why should having a unifying point matter at such an early stage?

this is akin to casting a tactical opposition ballot, because you sure as hell don't want the favourite to win.

you're not voting for the same reasons core supporters are, but you share the desire for change.

a generalized condemnation, a popular vote of no-confidence is the point.  critical mass is the point.

if critical mass is achieved, then this point will have been proven valid by real politik.

all revolutions, including arab seasonal inclements, carry a host of heterogenous voices,

but they do have a unifying theme: primo the establishment must go.  change is desired.

The GOVERNMENT is allowing Wall Street to loot and plunder America.

The right co opted the Tea Party started by Alex Jones and the left is looking to co opt the Wall Street protests.

"Real" protests are taking place this weekend at federal reserve buildings in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston.  I am sure we won't hear much about those from the establishment corporate fascist media.  This group has essentially one demand "End the Fed!".

One of the primary ways they do this is through leadership. When you start hearing from OWS "leaders" identified by the media, you will know that co-option is imminent. You already hear criticism from the media about "lack of leadership" and lack of "clarity" of message. It grows now or it dies soon.

I think throughout the world - people recognize that *something* is wrong - but they can't put their finger on it.  The suggested "List of Demands" they have proposed are created by naive, young idealists who don't understand that the world is being raped in front of them ... I've come up with a beginning template - but am relatively new to international economic issues - so I need some help here, guys (and ladies) ... can someone suggest a forum to further this discussion and help these kids out??   Here's my first draft ... edit away!

Do you really want to scare Wall Street & Washington?  Rethink your well intentioned, but sophmoric list of demands and consider these (also note that these demands are apolitical mostly and agreeable by both the far left, the far right, and the undecided middle-of-the-roaders!!):

1.  Enact Legislation which requires Congress, Congressional Staff and all Government employees to be subject to the same legislation that the general population is subject to.  Any law passed by congress is applicable to the people within congress.

Congress and Congressional Staff can currently legally engage in *illegal* insider trading with NO boundries.  They are not subject to any healthcare laws which pass for the general public.  They have their own retirement plan, medical plans.

2.  Abolish the Federal Reserve – enacted in 1913, this unconstitutional organization allows PRIVATE banking interests to:

control the money supply of the United States

create money out of thin air, with the push of an electronic button

charge interest on every dollar spent by the US Gov't. - this is payable from US Citizens via income taxes directly into the pockets of the member/owner private banks

issue debt worldwide without congressional approval or oversight (note that the recent sham of a debt ceiling debate was totally non sequitur since Bernanke had already lent the money to the USTreasury a week prior and issued a statement that “sometimes we just have to break the law”)

create unsustainably-low interest rates within any market sector that international banks want money to flow into (best illustrated by the housing fiasco & low interest rates student loans that created a massive industry of for-profit private colleges and overwhelming student debt burdens)

3.  Eliminate High Frequency Trading – sold to SEC and lawmakers as “increasing liquidity”, it is utter and complete bullshit – nothing more than legalized FRONT-RUNNING of all the bid/ask process.  If the average citizen, with a computer and an internet connection can't perform the same function with the same result – IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.

4.  Abolish Lobbyists & Enact Legislation which makes it illegal for a prospective or active elected government official to accept ANY money from outside interests – See: Dylan Ratigan.

5.  Abolish the (revolving door banker-controlled) SEC - Replace the oversight function with the FBI

this is another complete joke within our sham-facade of a regulatory system.  Private Bankers have a revolving door into and out of the SEC systematically destroying all legitimate material which should lead to criminal investigations.

6.  Put ANY securities, derivatives, gambling, insurance or other financial products not currently under the oversight of the SEC into an oversight bucket controlled by the FBI – this would capture the currently unregulated, 40 – 60 times leveraged market of over-the-counter CDO's, CDS's, SPV's which previously blew up our financial system and will AGAIN blow it up when European countries begin to default.

7.  Abolish Fractional Reserve Banking – this system allows $1 of deposits to be multiplied by 9, redeposited in other institutions and multiplied by 9, redeposited in other institutions and multiplied by 9, etc. etc. - in effect, allowing private banks to create money out of thin air.

8.  ReEnact Glass-Steagal – this law was repealed because the bankers convinced (read: paid off) congress that they could regulate themselves!!  This law was created after the last major banking debacle prior to the Great Depression and completely separated investment banks from the common person's depository institutions.  This allowed the investment banks to take high risk – with NO backing from the FDIC (read: taxpayer) and also allowed the FDIC (read: taxpayer) to limit the amount of insurance provided ONLY to the Depository Institutions (where the common man kept his/her savings).  Currently the US Taxpayer is on the hook for ALL investment banker's gambling.

9.  Repeal NAFTA & GATT – each of these (and the current legislation pending regarding trade agreements) opened up the world to corporations based in the United States … this world consists of slave-labor-wages, unregulated environmental impacts, extremely high corporate profits, and shelves and shelves of WalMart's cheap Chinese/Asian goods costing 1/10th of what they should really cost.

10.  Publically WATERBOARD All CEO's and the top tier of management within the Too Big To Fail Banks and Ratings Agencies – Hey, Dick Cheney said it wasn't torture, right??

It’s too soon to tell what direction the Occupy Wall Street movement will take.  But to step up now and oppose them when their message so far has been opposition to bailouts and opposition to a closed club control of America’s finances, is to nip a possible freedom movement in the bud. Then you will be able to say that Soros and the other infiltrators and usurpers of the movement have won.

If you jump on these protesters now and complain about them it in essence means you are supporting Wall Street – the same as Hannity and Limbaugh who go on and on about freedom but refuse to take a position on the most critical crisis in American government, i.e., the takeover of the government and financial system by a private cartel of international bankers. Both H and L are useless, worse than the left, because they have siphoned off America’s natural tendencies to desire and protect freedom.  And those who parrot what these two Tokyo Roses say are clueless of their role in the Establishment’s game of “useful idiots.”

Flush the whole damm rotten system. No more voting. Do it by lottery. Winning ticket? All expenses paid 4 year term serving the people. Do a good job? 4 more years. Do a bad job? Fudge packed jail time, hard labor. Do something criminal while in office? Death by hanging. Same for corporate leaders. Same for Wall Street titans of commerce. Problems? What fucking problems? There are none, with truth, and consequences.

Democracy

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on ...

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

...the fact that the kids are in the street is a great thing to see, even though not all of them really know what they are  talking about and they are not mentioning a commerce tax only system. It would be fantastic if they would also get people to stop working, and(or) have rolling strikes that hit the market weak points hard, and if they divest from the TBTF banks etc... Why ...then, ...you would have all you need to resolve the Constitutional Crisis. Oh yeah, END THE FED and return the Gold that secured labor against the beast and abolish the party system etc...

None of this will happen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqswQcJ-wvE&feature=related
