Chart Of The Day: Smith & Wesson Sales

Tyler Durden's picture

The attached chart of Smith & Wesson revenues needs no comment.

Well one comment: when the final bubble does pop (and here we make the wild assumption that no intelligent extraterrestrial life will be found to bail out the central banks in time), at least everyone will be locked and loaded.

And some highlights from the just released investor presentation:

  • Record-level quarterly sales growth from continuing ops of $136.0M, +48.3% Y/Y
  • Record-level quarterly income from continuing ops of $18.9M, or $0.28 per diluted share
  • Record Adjusted Non-GAAP EBITDAS of $36.1 Million
  • Raised Full Year Fiscal 2013 Financial Guidance
  • Exceeded high end of upwardly revised sales guidance
  • Quarterly unit growth +30.1% vs. market growth +23.5% (Adjusted NICS)
  • Backlog of $392.4M versus $148.8 one year ago

Doesn't look as if they will get them. That's why there must be no compromise on gun rights here. None. Nada. In fact, all Federal gun legislation (and EOs) should be repealed.

Leave Wisconsin out of it... On a serious note, the facts state that the number of US hunters make, by far, the largest army in the world.

Interesting that they didn't consider the Sig 226 as competition.

The world has needed a compact 8-9 shot 9mm/.40 SW since the AStra A70 went out of production.  If they can make a quality product, the compact 9mm could be a winner.

Greenie for the Astra mention.  Mine is a Model 900, rechambered to 9x19.  Nice shape too, but stays in the collectible bin.  Now my Star BM 9mm is another story.  Just a great handgun.  Parts scarcity is the only drawback, but nothing a decent machinist couldnt overcome.   Love the better quality Spanish guns.

Some may think we may have reached or are reaching a market saturation point.  Not in my circle of acquaintances I've been urging to arm up for SHTF.  Based on my local sample, only 1/6th have bought a gun, and among thoes who have, they think they'd need or very much would like about twice as much by dollar value of guns, ammo, and supplies to face the golden horde if it came to that.  I've noticed that about 40% of the population is Liberals who find private gun ownership abhorent.  When that population wakes up to reality, I expect another demand explosion.  Disclaimer: 1,000 shares of RGR

I am not sure if you guys and gals remember this.  Rodney King happened not that long after the 10 day cooling off gun law was passed.  I think it was 10 days.

Well the shit hits the fan in LA.  The neighboring areas are freaking out cause the cops are doing jack and Bradley does not call for Natl Guard.  Want to know why?  Hundreds of millions in aid after the riots. This is how politicians think.

So the S Koreans are armed up and fighting back. Lib TV reporters are shocked. The funniest was seiing lib arseholes in videos at guns stores trying to get guns. No guns for 10 days.  They were buying baseball bats and spearfishing guns cause the bows and arrows were sold out in minutes.

These gangs are gonna go to gated communities first because they will be easy pickings.  Probably no guns and $8 a hour rent a cop, that resident Ben Shalom has treated like shit for 5 years, has already split.

"So the S Koreans are armed up and fighting back. Lib TV reporters are shocked."

I remember that...the interwebs have been mostly purged of this.

The rioters were coming down the sidewalk and as they approached a Korean owned defended business (armed men standing on the sidewalk) they crossed to the other side, talking shit. What the TV cameras didn't show, there was also ten Koreans on the roof of the business (armed) looking down on the rioters who were talking shit.

The rioters weren't stupid...lol...but the coverage was edited later to make everyone watching, stupid.

And they wonder why no one watches pre-packaged news anymore.

One only require a good reliable AK47 - best all around combat rifle ever made. Plenty of cheap ammo - world wide. May not be super accurate, but who gives a shit, when you can put plenty of lead on and around your target. Besides its been proven that most action takes place at under 100 yards. Unless you are a sniper or hunting big game, those large size calibers are a waste. An AK and a good heavy handgun (357MAG or better) and few frag grenades and you're set!

For an AK-47 Variant, I highly recommend the Russian Saiga brand. Terrific value and performance for the money- - pretty hard to beat. Great point about the availability of 7.62 x 39mm ammo, I'd add that its low cost is a huge factor too. The less it costs to shoot, the more you'll shoot. The more you shoot, the better you'll get.

Shot placement is everything!

An ER doc friend of mine saw a guy come in shot with a 9mm eleven times and he was still alive. After that he won't go below .40 for his own conceal carry piece. The .40 bridges the gap between 9mm and the bulkier .45 caliber. With that said I heard the US marines are going back to a 1911 .45 pistol as standard issue. Hard to beat that pistol, it's a brick wall.

How silly... it's all about location. Even a single .22 in the right spot shuts 'em down and winks 'em out. 9mm is just fine.

It's the marksman, not the round. Key lesson!

Fri, 09/07/2012 - 00:37 | 2770592 CompassionateFascist

But if you're not and never will be a "marksman", I recommend the M1a: punches thru cinderblock wall at 300 yards, kills what's on other side. The sound alone will cause certain high-strung people to turn and run away. Alzo, if you hit someone in the arm with a .22, he might not even notice. If you hit someone in the arm with an M1a-fired .308, he will notice.

9 mm is too light just like the .38 special. My neighbor is an ER doc who says same...he has seen many come into the ER fighting mad shot 5-8 times with the .38 or the 9 mm. The reason, he says, is some of these folks are 280 lbs and up, wearing a thick jacket (slows the bullet I guess) and high on drugs. He says he has never seen one survive a .45 caliber.

He carries the Kimber Ultra .45 when he goes to the hospital in the middle of the night.

There are many ideas about what to get and what may happen.   The smarter guys say .308 with a scope set up correctly and engage at a distance. Requires practice.   The goal is to engage the zombie WIC card hordes when they are over 500+ yards away.  If the zombies have AK-47's - they cannot reach you yet.  The average Joe might screw up and not have enough practice or the scope set up or know what they are doing.

In Vietnam - that AH McNamara said humping through the jungle - need lighter .223.

An FAL clone weighs about 9 to 10 pounds.  An AR is about 6.5 to 8 pounds or so.

The Feds goal is to drive ammo prices to the moon.  Thank god for the Russians and Mexico dumping ammo on the U.S. which helps keep .223 and 9 mm and others down. .308 is pretty expensive but if you hit the target - game over.

There is one good video on the web and the guy said when the sh*t hits the fan and it is ground war that a pistol is only good for close in and as a back up.  You need a rifle.

Maybe...your right about the accuracy. If I shoot a couple of inches high someones face gets ugly...If  shooting .308s against a horde of unfortunates it would probably dissuade them from approaching your street. I for one don't want a high body count of once fine people. I think of it as crowd control. There are easy pickens on that street full of liberals over there. The old saying about the bear applies. You don't have to be faster then the bear, just faster then the guy next to you.

Nice. I think I have been to their web site before.  The quality looks good.  Looks like AK firepower & reliability with probably a bit more accuracy.

Tell the wife that you have home and auto insurance.  This stuff is life insurance.  Avoid robbery, torture or worse insurance.  I think we need to make sure all our loved ones know that if things get bad - neighbors and friends will kill you for a slice of bread.

Teach her to shoot at least a handgun too.  Hopefully things don't get really bad but being prepared is smart.

SG Works took 15 months to deliver mine and 9 more months to send my rail kit. If I remember correctly, it had 35-40 screws to put it together and a cable and clip for a trigger mechanism. Hated it. Sold it and almost tripled my money though since noone had any available. Ended up with the Center Balanced Systems unit and bought two, had them in about a month. Rough around the edges but functional and much easier to disassemble in the field. Now, since 5.56 ammo has reached the level of 7.62x39, I'm kind of regretting the move to what was a 'cheaper' platform. I may still jump ship to 5.56 but it may be too late to make that change if I believe everything I read on timelines in 2012.

Any of the above would be a good choice, with it's own advantages and disadvantages. Point being; if you don't have one now, GET ONE soon, learn to use it, maintain it, clear it it if it jams (even my AK will jam under the right circumstances), and fix it if it breaks.

The sig is good, but they don't like steel case ammo.  If you don't have an AR, buy one of those.  Nothing fancy is required.  As far as accessories, get an ACOG, and a rail mounted light (not one of those dangly handle things, those are stupid).  Keep it slick and basic, and most importantly, practice, and not just on a square range.  If you aren't starting from scratch and you know how to be safe with your rifle, you should be training till you are covered in dirt by the end of the day.

SgtShaftoe's picture

That hasn't been my experience.  I have ran a sig...hard, and it has had problems with steel case ammo.  Otherwise it's a good rifle, heavy, but good.  Don't bother with a 308 unless you already have an AR style 556 rifle.  If you were ever in a situation that you needed to deploy it, volume of accurately aimed fire is far more important (and the amount you can carry) than the size of the holes it punches.  A M4 has an effective range farther than you are likely to ever shoot it (600+ yards).  Get an ACOG, and more ammo (556 is cheaper), and practice more.

The most critical part of the weapon system is the guy/gal behind the rifle, not your accessories, or some whiz-bang techy rifle.  The Japanese Ninjas used farming implements as weapons for god's sake (swords were made illegal).  Your skills and capabilities development is far more important than the tool you pick up.  Practice with your tool until it becomes second nature, don't get caught up on the tech, and arguments between this and that.

The peak life of a barrel for a rifle (AR pattern) is about 10-15K rounds.  Heavier bullets and hotter loads will wear a barrel faster.  A barrel is about 100 bucks give or take. I've seen rifles run fairly accurate into the 20K rounds range.  Apart from that, springs and a few pins, bolt, extractor could be replaced but you can by a rebuild kit for 60-80 bucks.  The rest of the firearm is more or less good indefinitely however mileage may vary depending on how many rocks you bang it on if someone actually trains with it.

Most firearms in the hands of civilians never get shot that much though.  They're safe queens.

The M14 (korea era rifle, predecessor to the Garand) is still in use by the military for designated marksmen in the kush and Iraq.

The threats are only hidden to you by your normalcy bias.  History is a ruthless evil bitch.

Neither, it's 7.62. Which is the mm equivalent to .30 caliber. But the 7.62 .30 caliber has a different casing than the .30-06.

What's the 06 mean? This .30 caliber cartridge was created in 1906, or ought-six. Old timers still call it a thirty ought-six

M14 = 7.62 x 51 (.308)

M1 = 30-06 (but you can put a .308 barrel on an M1)

Either one kicks major boutee at distance.

Depending on Bullet weight.

The Marines were some of the first to get the Garand, and the Jerries called them Devil Dogs.

An M-16, M4, or a normal AR clone has been proven repeatedly in combat to be effective out to 600 yards on point targets with modern optics (ACOGs), or with a good shooter and good eyes, 400+ for point targets.  The velocity is lower out at those ranges, and the bullet may be tumbling when it hits the target, but it still makes a jagged hole.

You are definitely right on the upper distances, and I for one don't want to take a .223 round at 800 yards, but for most of us most of the time the 5.56 is a good 300 yard dinger.  For longer work, I prefer the authority of a .308.

the M14 is still being used only because the US had surplus of them and they were available. Although the Army is still using the M14 EBR it is being phased out . The Marines are done with theirs. There are better options for .308 now. The Briitish didn't have any .308 SLR's left so they adopted the LMT MWS. it is a beast and doing very well according to reports as thier DMR rifle with a 16" barrel. I like the M14 but there are better things available now.

Imagine if all these people that are new gun owners realize they actually need to practice and train to be effective in using their firearms instead of buying another barrel mounted GPS unit.  Ammunition supply is already fairly tight.  If everyone started burning 1,000 rounds a month in training, there wouldn't be any ammo left.  How I long for the 1990s again, where you could practically buy a pallet of ammo for 1000 FRNs, now you get 2 cans...  training is getting expensive.

Dude, training doesn't matter. All the people shot outside the Empire State building were shot by the cops (alright except for two the initial target and the assailant). I am trained. I am proficient (not expert) and I am scared shitless at whatching the people who are practicing. The reason I got my concealed carry was because I went on a lark to learn about it and then saw the 30 people in my class. In my view 28 of them should not have gotten the license.

I understand your concern.  It's rational.  However, most people that don't know how to shoot, are going to go with other people who shoot regularly and will promptly rip their heads off if they do something unsafe or stupid.  I've seen it happen quite a few times, and have done it myself.  Self policing works remarkably well. Most gun shops will highly encourage people to learn to use their gear as well, and most people want the training anyway.  Most mandatory training is stupid and pointless anyway.  It's far more useful to encourage people to go with friends to learn to shoot.

But there are a lot of people out there they don't take this seriously and if what we fear happens, and based solely on my admittedly limited observations the "accidental" deaths per gun owenr is going to go up. Scared, stupid and untrained ain't good.

I've shot/owned various firearms for most of my life.  I was taught early(12yrs old) to observe basic safety practices.  Always be aware of where the muzzle is pointed, don't put your finger on the trigger until ready to fire, etc.  It seems to me that many of the people I talk to who are new gun owners don't have a clue about safety.  Also, many of them buy a gun, and put it in the closet without learning to use it properly.  I guess they think they will magically know how to use it in a dire situation?  Few of them can tell me what a FTF or FTE are, much less how to deal with it.  If someone is a new gun owner, they should take the time to learn at least the basics.  Hang out with someone who's got alot of experience.  If you don't commit to safe use of firearms, you are a danger to yourself, and others.  Not only that, you are the stereotypical moron with a gun that the left likes to point out.

I started plinking at 12 years old with a .22 short.  A box of 50 rounds of Peters was forty three cents.  When we ran out of money we reverted to our BB guns.  After a while we got so good we could fire from the hit with out sighting jus "Knowing" where the shot would fall.  Shooting at things on the water really shapens that kind of shooting because you know exactly when the shot went in an instant.  Except for the Service I've never shot on any kind of a range.  Shooting from any position in any direction is probably better practice.

Yeah, it does look pretty cool at night, especially with a slower burning powder like Blue Dot. The fireball at the muzzle is impressive, as expected, but at night, you can see the fireball from the cylinder gap, which appears to envelop the entire shooting hand.

I mentioned that he would be a target just waiting to be shot and he might make it through one area but that would be a losing proposition. He mentioned taking mal tai coctails with him to burn people out of their houses. I said you might be able to launch one of those in my hood. But he would be instantly killed by anyone watching. I was reading some guy's blog the other night. He said that what will probably happen is any civil war may break down along racial lines for better or worse.  It is not something I want to see happen, but I also don't want to be at anyone's mercy.

The smart ex-military guys said the jackasses going out looking for a fight will get killed first.  You want to be like the snipers - a ghost.  You want to conceal and avoid conflict unless you are pushed to fight or defend.  Think smart.

Some of the guys point out that .22 pistols will be good during any occupation becuase they can be quiet and deadly.

Anyone rate that Kel-Tec pistol with .22 magnum ammo. 30 shot?  I heard it has been sold out forever.  People always talk shit about .22 but just today is another story of an old geezer shooting and killing a home invader with a .22.  Old WW2 guy.  Said the guy broke into his house and he aimed for his heart.

When the guns come out - it may be more like Dodge City.  People get real polite real fast unless the food runs out and it will.  Don't be suprised if evil Uncle Al-Sam Abullah starves the suburbs more than the cities.
