Former Defense Secretary Says US Will Probably Enforce "No Fly Zone", "Take Aggressive Action" Over Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

Three months to the election? Check. Which means war-mongering rhetoric, once considered a staple of the GOP, may very soon become action, first in Syria, and soon, everywhere else. From Bloomberg: "The U.S. and allied forces probably will impose a “no-fly zone” over Syria and take other “more aggressive action” against the Syrian regime, former Defense Secretary William Cohen said. While the U.S. has been leery of another military intervention after a decade of wars, “We’re coming to the point, however, where the violence is getting so severe, I think, that you’ll see a movement towards setting up those no- fly zones,” Cohen said on Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt” airing this weekend." Is war and immediate geopolitical escalation guaranteed? Not yet: "The former Pentagon chief and Maine senator, now chairman and chief executive officer of the Cohen Group consulting firm in Washington, said any U.S. military action would depend on participation and support from allies." Although desperate times, and by that we mean unfavorably trending popularity ranking, will certainly require desperate measures. Such as the continued massive build up of US naval assets in the middle east.

More from Bloomberg:

"I think that the United States is not going to go into this alone," said Cohen, who served as defense secretary during the NATO air strikes in the Kosovo conflict during the Clinton administration. "That’s why we’ve been working with the Gulf states."

John Brennan, President Barack Obama’s top homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, said on Aug. 8 the administration is studying the option of a no-fly zone with air protection “very carefully, trying to understand the implications, trying to understand the advantages and disadvantages of this.”

Cohen, a Republican, also criticized the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, for promising to issue an executive order on his first day in office labeling China a currency manipulator.

Then there is Iran. And Israel:

On Iran, Cohen said the odds are increasing that Israel will strike the Islamic regime's nuclear facilities to prevent the Persian Gulf state from being able to produce a nuclear bomb.

“I would say it’s a little bit better than 50-50 that the Israelis would take action,” Cohen said. “The rhetoric is starting to get ratcheted up,” he said, though the sharp language may be a “tactical” move to pressure Russia and China to sanction Iran.

Which they won't as both see Iran, as well as Syria, precisely as the fulcrum points in an anti-US/Israel axis. And from there, where the escalation takes us, is anybody's guess.

The good news is that if and when Syria is finally "liberated", following what is sure to be a barrage of daily media propaganda including the gratuitous includsion of "weapons of mass destruction" for old time's sake, when brent and crude soar to new record highs, at least the market can be finally assured that no QE will be coming any time soon. Or not so soon.

The Viet Nam Was was lost because the American people were against it. The Korean war ended in a stalemate. I don't know why but I can make a guess that Americans were not enthusiastic about it either because it had just fought WWII.  Now we have the War in Afghanistan, which has lasted an unbelievable ten years, and we are told our involvement will be another ten years. People are very passive about it for some reason, possibly because they are not threatened with a draft, or maybe they have bought into the Bush/Obama thesis that democracy must spread everywhere. North Korea may be a disaster, but that's not because its a dictatorship. It's because of its economy. Viet Nam and China have market economies to some degree, and are therefore successful.

No, the Vietnam War was set up to be dragging on for years without any meaningful victory in sight, so that the war can be used as the ultimate wealth transfer vehicle for the elite. The same strategy has been used again since 2003. There is nothing new.

A draft is coming this time.

They might let Iran attack a ship/sink a ship... or let Iran block the straight of Hormutz long enough so that the economy implodes and people become desperate and say ``we need to go kick some ass in Iran, let's do a draft!!``

I know a lot of idiots out there will WANT to go to war to have ``cheap oil`` back for their SUVs.

Then the people you know will volunteer to go to war. A draft is not in the near future or at least as long as politicians and people remember the Viet Nam era. If you don't know about it I suggest you do at least a search of You Tube. It probably has recordings of riots against the draft, the war, and perhaps has Jane Fonda's act of treason which included the refusal of a note from US fighters imprisoned in North Vietnam telling of their torture. See for example Sen. McCain's permanently shortened arm.

We need a draft. Young people need to stop volunteering for the services. Let the government excercise its draft power and see if the people don't take back that power. We shouldn't have a few young people volunteer to go to the Hindu Kush and get maimed or killed while the rest of their generation lie around the house playing Xbox.

The noble Afghans, Iraqis, Syrians, Israelis, Jordanians, Lebonese, Iranians, etc. can follow their own destiny without my participation or tax dollars. If they come to my home to cause trouble they will have it.

"Pressure Russia and China to sanction Iran".  Right, and how is the USA going to PRESSURE these two nations to sanction Iran and promote the US take over of that nation? You have got to be kidding me. These Imperial Storm Trooper types are clearly living in the past, the USA isn't going to pressure Russia and China to promote the USA and NATO expansion agenda and invasion of Iran agenda. Has this Cohen guy gone completely bonkers, or does he really believe that the empire wields that kind of power over nations like Russia and China?

Cohen obviously knows much about Israel's military agenda and plans, and why not, Israel is basically an arm of the US pentagon. Or would anyone argue that it is anything other than an armed branch of the US empire in the Middle East.

Seriously, I don't know wether to laugh or cry when I read a guy like Cohen pontificating on how America will run the world as it see fit by force or arms. You notice when Americans talk about foreign policiy it is always about what the USA demands and how force of arms will be used against those who refuse to do as they are told.

I don't know for a fact, but I believe Russia and China are prepared to draw a line in the sand very soon. Syria may be it, or if Syria does fall to NATO forces, then I believe Russia and China will draw that line in Iran and refuse to allow a NATO invasion and take over.

I noted today on the radio a report that Pakistan has vowed to back the present government of Syria and warned also that foreign forces would do well to stay out of Syria. Who knows how true this report was?

Violence in Syria? The US and it's Saudi allies are funding and arming and Turkey is training and providing safe haven for the rebels. A no fly zone is nothing more than a NATO pretext to provide active air cover and air support via ground attacks for the rebels. As for the rebels, they include large elements of radical muslim extremists and know terrorist gangs. NATO backs the same muslim extremist elements they claim to be fighting on the world stage.

This NATO gambit to conquer Syria might backfire if Russia and China don't back down. Then it will be on to Iran. One stage at a time. The only question is "Do Russia and China stand behind Iran, or do they cave in to NATO power one more time.

“The rhetoric is starting to get ratcheted up,” says former Defense Secretary William Cohen. And why not have rhetoric when you have Cohen saying it on Bloomberg television and the story is accompanied by warmonger, mapmaker and neocon supporter Stratfor?

One wonders where this rhetoric comes from? The Muslims?

No, the source of this rhetoric are the war drum beaters who took us to Iraq, who managed the Libyan War, who want to fight Russia for the pipelines to the Middle East, and most of all, who want to fight the enemies of Israel. Syria is Iran’s closest ally in the ME and the civil war that’s raging is an opportunity for Israel to gain more leverage against Iran;  hence, the spearhead actions of U.S. State Department policy trying to lead the countries of the world to remove Assad from power and move on to Iran.

So, the rhetoric is coming from the friends of Israel and in places of power - politics, finance and media - they are legion.

"An opportunity to gain more leverage against Iran;"

Actually what Israel wants is to stop the flow of weapons from Iran, that transit through Syria, to Iran's arm in Southern Lebanon. Hezbollah is committed to wiping Israel off the map. It currently threatens all of Northern Israel, as it made clear in Israel's last war. But it now has more powerful and longer range weapons than it did in 2006 (which is the date of the last war, I think but could be wrong). It also has more weapons than the first time. With Assad out of the picture and the Shia out of power, (the Alawitesare a branch of Shiism) and the Sunni in power, Israel can expect the transit of Iran's weapons to cease because the Sunni will never do anything to help the Shia.

Basically, this. Also, a damn good reason Israel has not initiated major kinetic action in a certain Gulf nation - All of Hezbollah awaits Iran's order just across the Lebanese border, like the Huns or Visigoths against Rome.

With Assad out, arming Hezbollah gets a lot trickier. And if Syria is attacked, Iran is obliged to aid its defense. A hop, skip, and jump from regional war of Sunni, Kurd, Shia, Christian, and Jewish.

You can bet that whenever MS Clinton meets to discuss Syria, the body count is about to spike upwards in double quick time. Before she is done she will have as much blood on her hands as any self respecting war criminal.

Why not ask MS Clinton about Libya, it may be out of the news, but muslim extremists are being shipped with NATO help from Libya to Syria. Saudi Arabia and friends are also shuttling in all sorts of muslim radicals to fight the secular forces in Syria. I doubt there are many good guys in this whole Syrian war. Secular dictator versus radical Islamists and all the ordinary people caught inbetween. Still, NATO hopes to pull off a take over and gain another outpost in the Middle East. Then on to Iran.

Really this Syrian conflict is funded by the west in order to take out Iran's allied nation in order to then open the door to attack and conquer Iran. The Neo-Con group in Washington has always said they planned to take down Syria and then Iran. So this is no surprise.

booboo, I have heard that theory before. I do not know if it is credible or not. I think the west is using al Qaida and other extremist muslim forces simply because they are motivated to take down a secular government like Syria's. It is simply making use of willing fighters for a cause the US supports. After Syria falls, I do not even think the USA knows what do about a victorious rebal army stuffed full of radical muslim extemist elements. We should never credit US policy makers with too many brains!

Look at the aftermath of the Soviet /Afghan war. The USA was clueless as to what to do after defeated Soviet forces pulled out, thus Taliban took over Afghanistan wand WE ended up invading in place of the Soviets. That clearly shows a clueless US leadership element. No?

I have a map of the entire Middle East out of The Charlotte Observer (Newspaper) from Feb 9, 2003.  I periodically update it, with the latest operations, etc.

The last time I looked at it, it all became clear to me:  Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, now Syria.  The 'doorway' into the theatre.  Syria (and then IRAN) is the last small country blocking the US access into the Asia and the Middle East.

You can see just by looking at the countries involved (Egypt, Turkey, Jordan as well) that this US invasion has been planned for probably decades.  The US wants that Mediteranean access. Russia knows if it loses it's base in Syria it will have no forward bases anywhere in that region.

What happens when the protests begin again in the US, in earnest?  Supposedly, Syrians are just revolting against their 'oppressive' government.  So, when Americans do the same, can we expect the use of force to put US down?  OF COURSE!  The Security guard at the university spraying mace in the student's face, the flash-bomb fired at the ex-marine in oakland, the BDU clad knuckledraggers down in LA fighting off the 'gangbanger' protestors.

When the time comes, Americans will feel the full force of our government's drones, microwave guns, hollow point bullets and mouth-breathing goons.

It's literally just a matter of time.

While my personal political preference is isolationism which automatically puts me at loggersheads with the administration, if we're discussing the US's chest thumping for regime change of yet another country, let's be honest.  How many reports have we seen week after week from "unconfirmed sources" regarding the unsavory situation in Syria.  It's almost day vs night by contrast to the non-msm media with reports of al queida and mercenaries galore doing most of the killing/raping/pillaging.  Assads forces are by contrast said to be the only thing between these "rebels" and sure death/disfigurement. And that pisses me off to no end, because just like project Northwoods, the American people are once again being pissed on by those in charge.

Veyron's ZH posts disappeared, someone replied to him and stopped editing or both?

The beginning of the end is always when free speech is banned by deleting posts and free speakers exiled to cyber gulag. Bulgarians under Soviet occupation knew that. Sad to think ZH maybe ruining their fine franchise for financial freedom, integrity and justice.

In a last-ditch effort to keep ZH honest and viable:

"201. Through their Bulgaria connections, the Dalrymples were able to enlist Daniel

Ivandjiiski. Like Victoria Dalrymple, Ivandjiiski is Bulgarian, and like Keith Dalrymple

Ivandjiiski is connected with charges of wrong-doings while registered at a FINRA regulated

broker-dealer, which in the case of Ivandjiiski was insider trading for which he received a

lifetime bar from the securities industry. Ivandjiiski, like Dalrymple, is also a registered

commentator on www.seekingalpha.com, and his website, zerohedge.com, serves mainly as a

portal for people to anonymously distribute derogatory information concerning public

companies, including to persons who are residence of the State of California. Zerohedge.com is

registered to the same P.O. Box in Sofia Bulgaria as that listed as the mailing address for Daniel

Ivandjiiski's father Krassimir Ivandjiiski, who during the Soviet era was member of the

Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Trade, the head of several “Head Offices” of the Bulgarian

government in various foreign countries, and was a  “special envoy” and “journalist” in

numerous war-torn countries during the Soviet era. Krassimir now offers his serves as a fixer for

throughout political and business circles of the country."

Looks like all the Carriers are just about ready for a war. Except for a couple, looks like it won't take but a month to get all of the availible decks into the fight. Wherever that might be.

That makes me happy, I was for a while worried that a war would be thrown, everyone but the Carriers would be able to show up.

The €/£ should strengthen, after those abysmal GBP#'s last week. The £/$ trade is a bit overbought, and the BoE isn't going to add more Qe anytime soon. England is in full blown retraction, and the only way out is higher taxes or smaller government!

Sat, 08/11/2012 - 03:58 | 2696573 HungrySeagull

Then what?

Someone locks on someone and the other will either honor the threat or attempt to evade.

Helis can defend themselves if necessary and fly boys grow fangs and WANT to kill helicopter.

Well, this barrel of monekeys would expand into the Russian Base with it's anti air, tanker supported fighter cover, shipboard anti air, infantry shoulder anti air etc etc etc etc etc...

With all that crap I would like to think everyone would be careful indeed. If someone did shoot, the entire "Saloon" will be trashed so fast with victors inside and the defeated out into the street.

The problem then becomes... is this a local bar fight? Or will the entire area, region and possibly Homelands start shooting?

A long time ago during the cold war, carriers used to have little ships with big antennas follow them about. I don't know how those Soviet tubs did it on the high seas back in the day...

Hot shooting wars sometimes have ignited on very little.

Cohn should just go away.  I was having a really bad day and evening until I read this post and then everything just went in the crapper.  I haven't watched the interview and don't plan on watching it.  I can tell just from the highlights presented in the post that there is no useful/relevant information provided in the interview.

“The rhetoric is starting to get ratcheted up,” he said, though the sharp language may be a “tactical” move to pressure Russia and China to sanction Iran.

That is just one ignorant statement.

My suggestion is that the next time ZH wants to provide or pass-on any information of relevance regarding the ME, they enlist Jack Burton or Mary Wilbur.  Their comments are the most on point.

Syria is on its own. Russia has already used it as a bargaining chip to become a full member of WTO.

The three next months are going to be critical:

'Americans' in the US are going to elect their president.

While the 'American' middle class love war for the opportunities that come with it, they also pay frontmen (the elite) to take this kind of decision, preserving them from being associated directly with the decision taking. It is all because the elite.

If the current president starts operations right now, the vote will be endorsed the actions of war and connect directly the voters with the war action decision.
Something the US citizen middle class do not want.

Three months is the time limit: every voter in the US know that shortly after the election, the newly elected president will start a war against Syria.
But without the voters being directly tied to the war, after all, they could not know before hand that the new president would start a war against Syria etc

The time limit will force the Syrian officials to speed up the crushing of the rebellion. Including more massacre.

'Americanism' at work.

so the campaign of terror, i.e operation "Damascus volcano" did not work, there were no mass defections from the government and military and now the "rebels" are getting crushed in Aleppo.

and now in "we've seen this dog and pony show before" predictable fashion the those who really want the regime change (hint, it is not the common, everyday citizen of Syria, but that doesn't matter) have no other choice but to get their hands dirty and thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of people killed in order to salvage the "liberation" of Syria.

but Syria is not Libya and who knows who will stay in the bleachers and will get in the game this time. one thing is for certain that death worshiping bitch and the UN armed forces i.e NATO will not have it all their own way this time. I wonder how the "America, fuck yeah!" sheep will react when F-18's start getting shot down and pilots start being taken prisoner or worse? will they start bleating from behind the safety of their keyboards for a ground invasion? I just can't see the Iranians, Russians, Chinese, or anybody else simply sitting and watching this time, everybody is going to have to pick a side on this one because if Syria falls to "Democracy" than it becomes a beachhead for the big prize, Iran and total western, UN, NWO hegemony over the entire MENA region and since the UN already owns and has enslaved the rest of Africa, that will give them absolute control over vast amounts of the planets natural resources.

could this be the start of WWIII?

if China or Russia have any sense of self preservation it will be.

As the US debt skyrockets to $16 Trillion the only way out is that trusted cash cow War!

Syria - the new silk road - linking it's own oil fields to Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and into Uzbekistan/Kyrgyzstan/Turkmenistan....pipeline and Mediterranian terminal jobs to follow...with a big face slaps to Putin and Hu Jintao....
No wonder POTUS wants to put of Palistinian UN delegations til after election....vapour trails will be screaming over Gaza shanty towns - with a new Charlie Wilson war to fund the shit out of Al CIAda :(

Meanwhile Soros et all will be burrying the € with a currency crash (what's left of it after oil spikes!) and buying up what remains of the 'Old Country' chateau's.....

Tin foil hats and more so next spring as proper offensives kick in...

This is probably my last post here.

I'm struck by how obvious it has become that the repubs are no more than the foil for the dems.

What is this doing in a bowl of soup about the end of the world, as an example?

"Cohen, a Republican, also criticized the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, for promising to issue an executive order on his first day in office labeling China a currency manipulator."

The repubs seem to be doing everything they can to elect O again----and history is on their side after two-terms for reagan/clinton/bush.

Words fail me the more I read this site and the 'comments' of its trolls

what a fucking shame zh has come to after its early days
