"We can not and will not sustain deficits like these without end. Contrary to the prevailing wisdom in Washington these past few years, we can not simply spend as we please and defer the consequences to the next budget, the next administration or the next generation. We are paying the price for these deficits right now. In 2008 alone we paid $250 billion in interest on our debt, that is more than three times what we spent on education that year, more than seven times what we spent on VA healthcare. So if we confront this crisis without also confronting the deficits that helped cause it, we risk sinking into another crisis down the road as our interest payments rise, our obligations come due, confidence in our economy erodes and our children and grandchildren are unable to pursue their dreams because they are saddled with our debts. That's why today I am pledging to cut the deficit we inherited by half by the end of my first term in office. This will not be easy - it will require us to make difficult decisions and face challenges we have long neglected but i refuse to leave our children with a debt they can not repay. And that means taking responsibility right now in this administration, for getting our spending under control."

Spending is less of a problem than no revenue. It is the revenue that has taken a nose dive (thanks Bush tax cuts) while spending as a percent of gdp is not far out of historical line.

No. Spending is around 22% of GDP now (historical average is around 20%) while revenue is around ~18% of GDP (close to 40 year historical average).

But with the help of the house and senate at least no Obamacare and a Paul Ryan written budget will be passed and signed. (We haven't had a budget for 4 years!) That alone is worth voting him in-just to sign off on bills passed in the house. Entitlements and the entitlement mentality of statists like yourself got us into this debt problem (LBJ was the major culprit with the "great society" programs and unfunded Vietnam war) and eliminating/phasing out these entitlements as the Ryan budget does will get us out. Unfortnately, Romney is a war monger since the military needs a 30-50% budget cut too and closing of most foreign bases, defunding the UN and IMF and of course, elimination of the FED, fractional reserve banking and a gold or commodity based currency. Ron Paul is the ideal from all standpoints in this regard as well as the only candidate with a sound understanding of economic systems.
Actually, we can speculate that Romney will be worse - it's possible, I suppose. Then again I figure there's perhaps a 1-in-10 chance that he might actually get the process of righting this ship started, which could just be the optimist in me getting the better of my good sense.
But we know, with absolute certainty, that President HopeyChangey is a Hindenburg+Titanic-level disaster. And a President Ofail unleashed in a second term, without ever having to face us lowly voters again, is frankly too terrifying for me to contemplate.

2) abolish 95% of business regulation
3) abolish transfer payments to illegals

Obama made the pledge on Feb 23, 2009 but on Feb 18th, 2009 he signed the ARRA (the so-call porkulus bill) that permanently cooked in another $858B (not the $787B advertised) into the baseline budget, raising deficits from ~$400B a year to roughly $1.3T a year. But he did articulate that he was gonna cut the "the deficit we inherited" , so in his progressve mind he only had to cut the $400B in half, nothing from porkulus.
