"We can not and will not sustain deficits like these without end. Contrary to the prevailing wisdom in Washington these past few years, we can not simply spend as we please and defer the consequences to the next budget, the next administration or the next generation. We are paying the price for these deficits right now. In 2008 alone we paid $250 billion in interest on our debt, that is more than three times what we spent on education that year, more than seven times what we spent on VA healthcare. So if we confront this crisis without also confronting the deficits that helped cause it, we risk sinking into another crisis down the road as our interest payments rise, our obligations come due, confidence in our economy erodes and our children and grandchildren are unable to pursue their dreams because they are saddled with our debts. That's why today I am pledging to cut the deficit we inherited by half by the end of my first term in office. This will not be easy - it will require us to make difficult decisions and face challenges we have long neglected but i refuse to leave our children with a debt they can not repay. And that means taking responsibility right now in this administration, for getting our spending under control."

Anyone over 50 reading ZH has got to be SOOOOOO embarrassed by their inclusion as a "Baby Boomer" - the book I am writing is called "Generational Failure: How the Baby Boomer Dropped the Ball". I agree with some of what you say... but what we are seeing is not a crisis in capitalism... what we are seeing is a crisis in liberalism. Make no mistake, the liberal version of the social welfare state has had a big hand in creating the mess that we are all in.

Eisenhower and the Supreme Court ended discrimination in the 1950s, when "baby boomers" were actually "babies." And finally, women's "liberation," for which you are also responsible, destroyed the family, the foundation of human civilization for 4000 years- even worse than the destruction of the gold standard. Take a look around you... at the poverty... the welfare state... the drug-addicted and lethargic youth... the horror of an education system... you did this... all of it... in the name of "equality." Poverty, the welfare state, and the decay of the family go hand-in-hand. To argue that this is not so is to ignore all fact and live in a world of pure fantasy.

Deficits are sky high because charlatans like Romney don't pay any taxes. Romney's IRA is more than $100 million. The point in this is that Romney padded his IRA with pre-IPO equities and thus avoids capital gains taxes, This is a loophole because IRA funds were not meant to used in this way.
The Republicans promised that extending the Bush tax cuts last time was the key to economic salvation: we would have job creation, lowered deficits, etc etc. and the entire right-wing nutjobs freaked out at the mere discussion of letting them go back to the prior levels.
10 years of tax cuts for the rich has made them wealthier, greedier, and hell bent on destroying this country. It's time to tax the shit out of them until they learn how to behave. Their way didn't help one bit, so screw em.

What people don't realize is the government lies. Everybody in it. That's how they make their money and keep their jobs. If they were actually doing what they were supposed to we wouldn't need them by now. But there is a small group of power hungry egotisical losers who think they have to control the world. If you look at every failure in the USA it can easily be stopped or prevented, yet it is not because the government is either making stupid decisions or the sheeple are. They know or debt is denominated in dollars, therefore we are never really in debt because technically they can just make it disapear with inflation. Why should they ever care about the USA losing its reserve currency status as long as the debt is denominated in dollars and they can screw the taxpayer all they want? It's already happening.

As long as we keep falling back to the default position of living in the hologram of what America was, the for/of/by the people state that we think we have, we will be constantly distracted by the "Squirrel". Don't wear your team colors for this fight, we are fighting the fake battle, while the war is being won by those who have the power. The average JP6 who goes to work everyday doesn't see the war, there are no bullets and gore, he doesn't see the encroaching miasma of regulations, tax codes choking off the lifeblood of the country, only thing he notes is how much is deducted from his check, but he is comforted, cos he thinks he's going to get it back in SS and medicare when he grows older. It doesn't bother him that health care costs are out of control, he doesn't pay for it. He is comfortably insulated from reality. If he loses his job, he will be cocooned in UI payments till he finds another one.
But let him try to be his own boss, enter that other sphere and he'll run smack into the wall that they built. That is when he realizes that taxes and regulations are crushing, health care costs are out of control, and if he fails, there is no safety net at all. I wonder how many of the independent RE agents, brokers and tradespeople so busily employed during the housing boom are being counted in our unemployment figures. So many small business owners that threw in the towel during the bust...they are on their own. They are more than happy to go back to being stagnant, secure in a job, but there are no jobs to be had. They got burnt pretty good, what are the chances that they will try again? How about the lessons the people learnt from watching the value of everything they own whipsaw in epic spikes of volatility?
There is a major break in the forcefield of lies. The truth is sinking in that there is no money in the SS fund, pensions funds have been looted, our treasury drained by gamblers...where has all the money gone? Some are sure it was all spent by the government, others swear it was stolen by Wall Street. In truth, they are now one and the same. No figure head is going to change this. We don't have men of the caliber needed anymore, none that will destroy the unseen level of the 3D chess game.
