Guest Post: This Is Blowback

This Is Blowback

The YouTube video depicting Mohammed is nothing more than the straw that broke the camel’s back. This kind of violent uprising against American power and interests in the region has been a long time in the making. It is not just the continuation of drone strikes which often kill civilians in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and Afghanistan, either. Nor is it the American invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Nor is it the United States and the West’s support for various deeply unpopular regimes such as the monarchies in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia (and formerly Iran). Nor is it that America has long favoured Israel over the Arab states, condemning, invading and fomenting revolution in Muslim nations for the pursuit of nuclear weapons while turning a blind eye to Israel’s nuclear weapons and its continued expansion into the West Bank.

Mark LeVine, Professor of Middle Eastern history at U.C. Irvine, writes:

Americans and Europeans are no doubt looking at the protests over the “film”, recalling the even more violent protests during the Danish cartoon affair, and shaking their heads one more at the seeming irrationality and backwardness of Muslims, who would let a work of “art”, particularly one as trivial as this, drive them to mass protests and violence.

Yet Muslims in Egypt, Libya and around the world equally look at American actions, from sanctions against and then an invasion of Iraq that killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and sent the country back to the Stone Age, to unflinching support for Israel and all the Arab authoritarian regimes (secular and royal alike) and drone strikes that always seem to kill unintended civilians “by mistake”, and wonder with equal bewilderment how “we” can be so barbaric and uncivilised.

All of these things (and many more) have contributed to Muslim and Arab anger toward the United States and the West. Yet the underlying fact of all of these historical threads has been the United States’ oil-driven foreign policy. Very simply, the United States has for over half a century pursued a foreign policy in the region geared toward maintaining the flow of oil out of the region at any cost — even at the cost of inflaming the irrational and psychopathic religious elements that have long existed in the region.

This is not to defend the barbaric elements who resort to violence and aggression as a means of expressing their disappointment with U.S. foreign policy. It is merely to recognise that you do not stir the hornet’s nest and then expect not to get stung.

And the sad thing is that stirring the hornet’s nest is totally avoidable. There is plenty of oil and energy capacity in the world beyond the middle east. The United States is misallocating capital by spending time, resources, energy and manpower on occupying the middle east and playing world policeman. Every dollar taken out of the economy by the IRS to be spent drone striking the middle east into the stone age is a dollar of lost productivity for the private market. It is a dollar of productivity that the market could have been spent increasing American energy capacity and energy infrastructure in the United States — whether that is in oil, natural gas, solar, wind or hydroelectric.

And this effect can spiral; every dollar spent on arming and training bin Laden and his allies to fight the Soviet Union begot many more thousands of dollars of military spending when bin Laden’s mercenaries turned their firepower onto the United States, and the United States chose to spend over ten years and counting occupying Afghanistan (rightly known as the graveyard of empires). It is likely that the current uprisings will trigger even more U.S. interventionism in the region (indeed it already has as marines have already been dispatched to Yemen) costing billions or even trillions of dollars more money (especially if an invasion of Iran is the ultimate outcome). This in turn is likely to trigger even fiercer resistance to America from the Islamist elements, and so the spiral continues on.

The only way out of this money-sucking, resource-sucking, life-sucking trap that is very literally obliterating the American empire is to swallow pride and get out of the middle east, to stop misallocating American resources and productivity on unwinnable wars.

But neither major Presidential candidate is interested in such a policy. Perhaps it is because war is a great profit source for the military-industrial complex, the force to which both the Democratic and Republican parties are beholden?

In any case, we should expect to see much more of this:

To be honest, these are mostly vile crimes and murders with some terrorist acts.

In the US there are approximayely 20,000 murders /year.

I want you to start listing and briefly describing each one in the past month, I bet you'd have more pages than this list you just published.

those 1500* murders in the US are just as vile against men, women and children.

When you're done, list all the violent crimes in the US that resulted in injuries and assaults to people.

Get real!!

Spitzer, the AIPAC volutary/clerk proposes, a.o.

- to gear up for a final battle against the enemies of democracy, freedom, Monsanto, Halliburton, Carlyle

- to follow the hollow "clash of civilization" propaganda

- to unconditionally support Israels radicals  in their strive for a spiritually purifying nuclear world war

- to rehabilitate the neocons and see the positive aspects of a strategy of a sustained global destabilization

- to forget that it was safer to stroll any area in Bagdad or Damascus than any place in Detroit (e.g.) before we liberated them

- to ignore that the US in collaboration with the Saudis created Al-Quaida and the scale of islamist radicalism

- accept that the NSA is a benevolent organization caring for US citizens and non-US citizens alike

- to bomb Iran and Syria

- to declare Russia and China eternal enemies

- to enjoy CNN and its state sponsored news as information

- to regard it as a sign of superiority of our nation that 8 in 10 americans believe that angels are real

It was indeed written by a Muslim apologist. A YouTube video had noting to do with the attacks on our embassies. Islam demands that "infidels either submit to Islam, pay a tax, or die. The silly video was used as both a pretext for an attack as well as training for the west to say NOTHING against islam. This M.O will be used again and again to attack our Freedom of speech which the Muslim world despises and the U.N will eventually attempt to outlaw speech against islam thinking it can appease the Muslim world.

For those that say Islam deserves respect, I would ask why. Is it the fact that they compel others to submit to their religion under threat of death? Maybe its the how they treat women. I mean really who wouldn't stone a women to death that leaves her house without a burka or the company of a male relative. Maybe its how they treat the gay community (death). Maybe its their rationality; a Youtube video is a perfect reason to riot, destroy and embassy and sodomize a diplomat before you kill him. Maybe Islam deserves respect for the many creative ways they kill innocent people. Shoe bombs, underwear bombs, children suicide bombers.  What a fantastic religion. Sign me up.

Fact is...some cultures are better than others. Cultures that promote freedom, education and personal responsibility (like immigrant asians) do well in bettering their standard of living. Other cultures like the "hip hop" culture are mired in economic disress. Those are two examples within America. Even easier to see is the difference between the values of America and the results it produces and the results Islamic values produce. Seems to me that those in the islamic world live in poverty because of their values and we are the richest most successful country in the history of the world becuase of our constitution and the freedoms it provides, or used to provide.

Only reason we are involved with these people at this point is the Petrodollar agreements.
We get involved over there cause we get barrels of oil for literally nothing (fiat paper).

Should have never been done. If they wanted to wipe each other out...or just sit in the desert and do nothing, that would have been fine.

We have had all the alternative methods to power our industries suppressed.
And we have wasted more resources than we should have.

The blame squarely goes to the people responsible for those last two items.

The government/industrial complex.

You don't know your history my friend. The Barbary Pirates (they were Muslim) were asked why they attack us. Their response was because we are commanded to do so by the Koran.

To them we are infidels and infidels must either submit, pay at tax, or die.

They can't be appeased.

For starters - like I said "I don't like either Obama or Islam, so you've got nothing on me, haha!"

And talking about history, would you be so kind and tell me about native people - in both Americas?

They were "infidels" and pagans to the Christians who came from Europe, right? And those Christians couldn't be appeased, they wanted native folks to submit, die off or just GTFO off the land they set foot on.

From craddle to graveyard double standards all the way.

More people are killed by Islamists each year than in all 350 years of the Spanish Inquisition combined.

The world population was a fraction of what it is today and the Spanish Inquisition didn't have explosives to blow anything up.

That comparison fails. As for the rest. Why bother. The propaganda doesn't care to explain what this "crisis" is about anyway.

1 US nuke killed more civilians in the blink of an eye than any Islamist suicide bomber or terrorist in the last century.

Your "massacre and murder" is their war and vice versa our "war" is their massacre and murder.

The motive for 9-11 “was to sway American sentiment toward Israel and away from Israel’s enemies – the Muslims, the Arabs and the Palestinians.”

The article Inside Job, a review of Christopher Bollyn’s book, "Solving 9-11, The Deception that Changed the World,” continues:

“The Likud party, which is an offshoot of the Irgun and Stern gangs that massacred the Palestinians on dozens of occasions since 1947, was the ‘antagonistic element opposed to any agreement that would allow the establishment of an independent and democratic Palestinian state.’ Ariel Sharon, a prominent Likud-nik, was elected prime minister in February 2001 and ‘was committed to the rejection of the Oslo peace agreement.’ …

“The determination of these Likudniks was revealed ‘on March 28, 2001, at the Arab League meeting in Beirut, where twenty-two nations endorsed a resolution introduced by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. It offered Israel normal relations with all Arab states if Israel complied with UN Resolutions 194 and 242’ the latter requiring Israel to withdraw its armed forces from its illegally occupied territories, including the Golan Heights, Gaza, the Sinai, and the West Bank, including Jerusalem…

“[T]he next day, a massive Israeli military force surrounded and destroyed Yasir Arafat’s compound in Ramallah…

“As Bollyn sees it, ‘Israel is a nation which was founded by terrorists, ruthless men with histories of committing genocidal crimes and false-flag terror attacks. Israel was created in 1948 in Palestine on land that was “ethnically cleansed” of its indigenous Christian and Muslim inhabitants.’”

While this is logically and certainly blowback for past misdeeds and support of the oligarchs and dictators, make no mistake that much of this is also financed and coordinated by Saudi Arabia, who works to forestall the possibility of any democracy sprouting up around them.

Still think it a coincidence that 15 of those 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudis, with the others never being adequately identified?

Same day there was news of an African Union declaration condemning US foreign policy. And the guy next door said to me: "I will tell you this much about the United States we are sure bringing about world unity, cause the one thing that unites the entire planet: hatred  of us. It is like you all became one big nation called the rest of the world. "

I said to him: "Well we actually did. In fact we’ve even got our own flag". He went: "Oh yeah what is it?" I said : "Same as yours but on fire".

Yeah, let's all just stick our headz in the sand and pretend it's just a big coincidence this rioting was triggered on 9/11.  Fuck that.  Heres the facts:  Islam is an imperialist religion.  They use these temper tantrums to hold the Western world hostage.  Today its a video on YouTube.  Tomorrow it will be because of a post on ZH.  Its our rights they can't stand.  And we will be increasingly beholden to them as they colonize the West.  Wake up people.

There are PLENTY of "Other Countries" that have experienced US funded / condoned "terrorism", and the body count worldwide entirely due to American interventionalism, is far higher than YOUR isolated event.

From two Asia Times articles:

"It had both indirect and direct fire, and it had military maneuvers that were all part of this very organized attack.  The British think-tank Quilliam reports that the assault consisted of two waves and was carried out by around 20 militants seeking to avenge the death of al-Qaeda's second in command, Abu Yahya al-Libi, who was assassinated in June. 24 hours before this attack, none other than the leader of al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, released a video on Jihadist forums to mark the anniversary of 9/11," writes Quilliam. "In this video, Zawahiri acknowledged the death of his second in command Abu Yahya and urged Libyans to avenge his killing."

Perhaps the single greatest beneficiary of the affair was the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.  What better illustration of Assad's argument that he is fighting "terrorists" than this dramatic reverse in Libya, which many foreigners analysts had seen as a success story to be repeated in his country? While no evidence currently links the Syrian government to either the movie or the embassy attack, the motive is certainly in place. The argument for an international intervention against Assad just suffered a body blow.

The American military have presented the world with a new weapon, informally named the heat ray or microwave cannon. The “Active Denial System” is a non-lethal weapon primarily designed for crowd control.

Hearsay still causes the US Department of Defense deny it has spent $120 million on a mobile microwave oven.

The Active Denial System (ADS) beams a high-frequency, man-sized electromagnetic wave 1,000 meters.

Aluminium foil is an effective reflector of microwaves . . . . .

$120 million to produce, $10 (roll of Alcan foil) to counteract.

Power microwave amplifiers are particularly sensitive to SWR, so even a small proportion of the radiated energy returned to the source will lead to immediate thermal problems (and rapid failure).

Seems a "man sized thin flat aluminium sheet reflector" would be quite the effective countermeasure . . . . . .

Or knowing the wavelength, use the old WW2 strategy of "Foil Window"

Wonder what's their next "anti-crowd" superweapon??

nice to know my aluminium foil headdress will be effective ^^

as to next on their list of crowd control, let's see, they've used water (cannons), noise machines, bean bag guns, tasers, tanks, tear gas & pepper spray, and a quick wiki finds these,

Low frequency sound cannons are weapons of various types that use sound to injure or incapacitate subjects using a focused beam of sound or infrasound. Active denial systems (ADS) are a non-lethal, directed-energy weapon developed by the U.S. military. The ADS directs electromagnetic radiation, specifically, high-frequency microwave radiation, at a frequency of 95 GHz, which causes the water in the upper epidermis to boil, stimulating a "burning" sensation in the nerve endings and generating intense pain. Dazzler lasers are directed-energy weapons that use intense light to cause temporary blindness or disorientation of rioters.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riot_control#Research

no mention of tee vee or i-distractors. . . which control crowds more effectively than anything else I've witnessed. . .

Let's keep things separated ok? At least going for world domination, trying to control all resources, and enslaving your own people to protect the petrodollar complex makes sense at some level, if you're part of the happy few. Religious zealotry like this defies all forms of rationality.

Believing that you are one of the happy few who is protected by the petrodollar standard is an incredible leap of faith. On must be a religious zealot to believe that America has a right and a duty to destroy the lives of people all over the world in order to maintain a porcine standard of living.

It has less to do with religious zealotry than abject poverty and the fact that most of the people of MENA have lived under brutal tyrants for the last 75+ years. Plus it's hot, there isn't clean water, and food prices have been constantly on the increase since the chairsatan began QEing the world in the ass.

the United States has for over half a century pursued a foreign policy in the region geared toward maintaining the flow of oil out of the region at any cost...

This is such a pile of fraudulant propaganda!  If the USSA stayed out of other countries and out of the business of others, every country that produces oil would be happy to sell their oil to the USSA at the same price as everyone else.  This is nothing about being able to get oil, this is about the military industrial complex and large corporations bribing the US government to force those countries to permit western corporations to dominate drilling and other production.

Well if I were Aziz I would say that our foreign policy has been to maintain oil being priced in $, not flow.

I don't think I would go so far as to call it propaganda.

And if we did try to buy oil on an even footing with all these countries, our $$ policy might not be quite so inflationary, causing a bit of a problem with deficits at home.

Much easier if you may simply state that you poor Sandies will accept $$ for your oil and like it, from the deck of an aircraft carrier.

The fact the multinationals get the contracts is just gravy.

Dollar Hegemony is the game.

I agree....

I was talking about "maintaining the flow of oil" (and implicitly the dollar-denomination) in terms of a policy objective.

It's a bullshit policy objective that actually causes the price of oil to rise (as we saw post-Iraq) and will ultimately hasten the end of the dollar's reign as reserve currency, but this is how the neocons see it. Sorry I wasn't clearer.

I got your point, and especially the any price part of it. I mean, when you print the currency, price matters little.

As long as your currency is accepted, and the commodity is priced in it, you are doing good.  Big market for oil, all the better for demand for USDs, and lookee here, we have plenty of those going around.

I could see how someone could jump on it, but I did not take it that way at all.

Oil is fungible.
Currencies are fungible.

Even if a few places wouldn't sell directly to the USSA, most others would.  And honestly, nobody gives a flying peanut shell whether they are paid in dollars, euros or pesos, because 10 minutes after the check clears they can convert to any currency they want... or if they have half a brain, to gold, silver, food, guns, ammo, etc.

And make no mistake, lots of neo-con-jobs imply, or claim outright, that we need to invade countries to have access to oil.  That's a pure lie (propaganda).  If the USSA removed all their military bases from around the world, and stopped killing and jerking people around, they would have just as much access to oil as they do now.

The truth is the neo-con-jobs, and the neo-libs too, don't want access to the foreign oil so much as they want control over the oil, ergo the need to invade.  They definitely do not want someone that is not in their tribe selling oil too cheap and banking the money, especially if the money is in gold.  This is the real reason Iran must be invaded.  The nuclear bullshit is just the red herring excuse.

Big Oil does not want cheap energy.   Big oil is largely Zionist controlled.  That's where the money is.

Which is why Vacuum energy / Zero-Point energy gets NO funding, and researchers in this field are consistently denigrated as "whackos" and "Fringe" by the MSM (who know where THEIR secure funding comes from!).

ANY sign of "Free" energy on the horizon, and "Big Energy" gets quite upset - and we all know what happens when "those with influence" get upset.

Who needs zero-point energy?  The earth is a freaking ball of super-hot magma with an extremely thin crust on top.  There is plenty of energy available with existing proven technologies given investment of a small fraction of the price of a war like Iraq or Afganistan.

Er, Muslims have been doing this to Americans since Thomas Jefferson was president and we had our first 'War on Terror'. It has nothing to do with drones or the US. It is how Muslims behave towards outsiders and in their own societies. The only thing that has really changed since the Barbary pirates is Muslims have more powerful explosives today than then.

Learn a lesson from the founders:

Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbar, 1797

Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen,—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
