Guest Post: Dagan vs Netanyahu

Dagan vs Netanyahu

Binyamin Netanyahu recently slammed critics of a pre-emptive strike on Iran as “having set a new standard for human stupidity”.

Yet Netanyahu’s view is not shared by all Israelis. In fact, there are some very prominent Israeli critics of Netanyahu’s view. Meir Dagan, the former head of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad, says that an attack on Iran would be the “stupidest idea I’ve ever heard.”

Speaking to ’60 Minutes’ Dagan noted: “An attack on Iran now before exploring all other approaches is not the right way to do it.”

Dagan should be congratulated for his rationality. It is my belief that the greater threat to Israel and the West is not the potential for an Iranian nuclear weapon — the truth remains that mutually assured destruction remains the most potent peacemaking force in history, even for supposedly irrational regimes like Pakistan, North Korea and Soviet Russia — but the dangers of blowback from a unilateral strike on Iran.

Oil and resource supplies through the Persian Gulf could be interrupted, sending energy prices soaring, and damaging the already-fragile global economy.

A regional war in the Middle East could result, potentially sucking in the United States and Eurasian powers like China, Pakistan and Russia. China and Pakistan have both hinted that they could defend Iran if Iran were attacked — and for good reason, as Iran supplies significant quantities of energy.

And with the American government deep in debt to foreign powers like China who are broadly supportive of Iran’s regime, America’s ability to get involved in a war on Israel’s behalf is highly questionable. And even without a war, further hostility and tension between America and her creditors would surely result in an even faster rush toward more bilateral and multilateral agreements to ditch the dollar for trade, something that America will almost certainly seek to avoid. So even with a President in the White House significantly more sympathetic to Netanyahu than Obama, America may find herself constrained by the realities of global economics, and unable to assist Israel.

Most discouragingly, such a high risk operation seems to offer very little reward — a successful Israeli strike on Iran is estimated to set back Iran’s program by only one to three years. And such an operation would likely require bombings over many days and in many locations.

If Netanyahu wishes to go ahead with such a scheme then that is his prerogative. But if he will not listen to Dagan’s wise counsel, why should the West rush to his aid if his scheme backfires?

its time for this to be said..okay we had to help the jews after ww2 because their smart men (oppenheimer and einstein) helped us build the a bomb with not even a calculator..and in 1945 we could have ruled the world because we were the only ones who had it and what did we do ??we didnt..because ther is no money without war..(no wonder why the aliens that have been coming here for the last 50k yrs dont help us )..anyway that time is past the jews have a bombs and if we didnt need middle east oil we would treat the sand people the same way as we do africa (what nothing we need ??then who cares what you do to each other.) if not for the heebs we would still have our world trade center..but we all know that..if romeny wins he will exploit all of our natural resources which would make us totally energy independant..( many congress men are in the hand of the saudis)..and after the oil embargo of the 70's we should have done it long ago..bottom line the world needs us and we dont need them ..if 325million americans vanished tomoorow the finnacial world would collapse..now if 6.7 billion people vanished tomorrow the usa woudl survive..(gee why is that?/) would it be easy ? no but we are the only completely self sustaining country on this backward planet that is 3rd from the sun in this galaxy..so enough of us putting other first its about damn time we put the usa first!! and if that mean getting rid of all the politicians..so be it!!

And the real goal is for millions (billions) of people to vanish regardless.  Just the mathematics of exponential growth in the end.  Either human forces will affect a change or mother nature will.  I suspect lots of smart and powerful people get this and would rather control the outcome instead of being subjected to it.

No, centerline. Malthusian-style eugenecism is not necessary. The technology we have and resources we have on planet earth can reasonably feed and house everyone and more just fine. That argument has been logically debunked many times over, yet some people still believe it. Look into it a bit further.

His "smoking" logic (which must be meth and/or PCP, if it exists at all) goes far deeper. The casual reference to the deaths of millions and billions of people, his disregard for what other cultures have to offer, his transparent anger, all point to a psychopath. Do not do business him.

I have mentioned on these pages before the absolute necessity of reading and understanding the Federalist Papers.

What you posit in your cause and effect formulation is specifically answered in Federalist #10, generally considered to be the most important of all the Federalist Papers.

It calls your thinking the "Tyranny of the majority"  I encourage you to read #10   http://www.constitution.org/fed/federa10.htm

It should also be pointed out that it is thinking such as yours that gave rise to the Bill of Rights Consider your statement and it's implications if it were ever followed. There would only be allowed the group think of the largest faction and in #10 ,James Madison ,the author makes a very compelling argument against factions.

"Among the numerous advantages promised by a well constructed Union, none deserves to be more accurately developed than its tendency to break and control the violence of faction. The friend of popular governments never finds himself so much alarmed for their character and fate, as when he contemplates their propensity to this dangerous vice. (later in #10)

"By a faction, I understand a number of citizens, whether amounting to a majority or a minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adversed to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community"

US Foreign Aid to Israel– March 2012

Stop milking the teat. We cannot afford to continue giving you money & you’re not doing your job. Netanyahu, just look at the events in the ME. The US has provided Aid to those countries as well. It’s beginning to look like your all just thieves stealing from the cookie jar. Netanyahu, your no different in looking out for the next US taxpayer hand out.

I support Israel, not political mouth breathing scumbags who portray falsehoods.  Pssst, come here Netanyahu… when you don’t find nuclear fuel weapons, they [Russia, China, Pakistan, etc.] will turn your NJ sized country into a glass parking lot. Make sure your decisions are very sound.

Just a bit of advice for a hostile dependent host; living off the US taxpayers to play propaganda games for the sole purpose of Central Planners has become transparent..

" the truth remains that mutually assured destruction remains the most potent peacemaking force in history, even for supposedly irrational regimes like Pakistan, North Korea and Soviet ...."

clear throat...now demolish the premise  just to start lets use THE formost authority on Islam Bernard Lewis.

Once upon a time we could count on mutual assured destruction (MAD) as a deterrent to nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. But now the players have changed. For radical Iranian Shiities such as Mahmoud Ahmadinjad, MAD may represent more of an inducement than a deterrent, according to Bernard Lewis, the foremost Western scholar on Islam.

Why Is It Bad if Iran Gets a Nuclear Bomb?
Other than the fact that we don't like it, why is it bad if Iran gets a nuclear bomb? Troublesome nations like China, Pakistan and North Korea have gotten the bomb, and the world hasn't come to an end. Surely the Iranians know that actually using one against a nuclear power like the United States would result in their own destruction. Don't they?

Do they even care?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has talked often about imagining a world without the United States and Israel. Maybe some of that is just talk, but there is physical evidence that in addition to developing a nuclear weapon Iran is also pursuing dangerous electromagnetic pulse (EMP) technology. The United States has detected missile tests from sea-based platforms from which the Iranians have launched warheads at the high-point of the missile trajectory rather than the aim point over the target.

This indicates an interest in detonating a device high overhead to maximize the EMP effects of disabling all electronic equipment including computers and telecommunications systems. Maybe that's why Ahmadinejad talks about "a world without America." While incapable of annihilating the United States with a small nuclear arsenal, EMP technology could largely incapacitate the world's lone superpower nonetheless.

Funny that you'd consider an ultra-Zionist kook to be the foremost authority on Islam. I'll grant you that he is influential in neocon circles and was a big proponent of the invasion of Iraq. His prediction of an Iranian nuclear attack on Israel to occur on August 22, 2006, was somewhat less than accurate, though.

You are right Glomar.  Persian do not care about human life and never have.  They have eaten their own young... centuries of raw flesh dripping from their heathen teeth.  For the past 400 years, they have done nothing but beat their women with bullwhips and lock them in cellars.  Less than human they are, driven beyond madness by an insatiable desire to destroy all of the earth and its inhabitants in an attempt to conjure the great Mahdi, the 12th Imam, a demon of might beyond all human comprehension.  For 1500 years, they have sat quietly in Persia, not waging war, not attacking their neighbors: no, no... for long centuries they have bided their time: content with eating their young, beating their women, and plotting this destruction of the entire cosmos.  NOW, right NOW, at any moment they could strike.  I am not fooled by their 1500 years of peaceful existence.  I know what devlis lurk in Persia.  Obviously you do too.  You must have learned this in the CIA and on Wall Street: these great fonts of the cumulative Wisdom of the West: better than the Library of Alexandria.

Why is it not a deterant for Iran?

It's about the Mahdi, the 12th imam and his return to "save" the world. In the Shiite world there must be a cataclysmic event to usher in the Mahdi ...so MAD is impotent as a deterrant for Iran.

( hey I know I'm pushing some of you to use your brain ...too fuck'n bad) cause what I've written is Shiite belief so go argue with them....better yet just do your usual thing..don't read this just hit the down arrow and save having to think.

I have NEVER made the claims that I am a history expert. What I do attempt is to bring factual knowlegde to the discussion. That to many on this site is anathema to their approach. They appear to be totally comfortable in doing NO investigation on their own but rather perfer to tweet simple answers to complex questions.

If I had any brains I would cease posting to such a group as it is simply a waste of my time. Additionally the "tweeters" are a TOTAL insult to Tylers diuranl efforts to present detailed information to this group.

As far as Israel goes let me ask you this. Say you live in a neighborhood where every neighbor you have has over a period of decades  attacked you and continually claim that their entire focus is to kill your entire family. What would you do? What would be your policy?

Now I will be the first person to tell you that in logic all analogies are false but you get the idea. Israel has a right to exists yet every Arab country around them has committed themselves to Israels total destruction. Does the world simply stand around and allow the annihilation of a group of people?

I'm not Jewish. I have no Jewish relatives. I have never sent the Jews a penny. My probelm is with those who endorse on these pages genocide. And that's what appears on these pages every time the Jewish question is raised, shouts for Jewish genocide.  Makes one wonder just how many neo Nazi there are on this site.

Say you live in a neighborhood where every neighbor you have has over a period of decades  attacked you and continually claim that their entire focus is to kill your entire family. What would you do? What would be your policy?

I would fuckin' MOVE.  But that's because I'm pragmatic.  I don't have a massive chip on my shoulder borne of the combination of racially-motivated self-importance and a persecution complex like the Likud leadership.  I also didn't bomb government buildings in order to help my friends seize the nicest real-estate in the neighbordhood I live in.

I realize you're a sensitive flower.  Yes, there are a few folks here who endorse genocide, sure.  I personally suspect most of them are just trolls but indeed, a few are garden-variety anti-semites with a dark sense of humor, and there are probably about 10 *real* neo-Nazis, too.

So what?  Who cares what those assholes think?  You really think you're *helping*  by pushing an equally biased and hypocritcal narrative about the conflict in Israel?

Keep it simple and stick to what you know.  You really don't know shit about Shi'ite theology, and should leave that to the muzzies.  You should also ditch the patently false claims you've picked up from FLAME or the hardliner politicians.  There have been peace agreements negotiated between Israel and several Arab-state neighbors.  Since '67, Israel has been the more FREQUENT aggressor on the *State* level than ALL the neighboring Arab states.  (Which makes a lot of sense, considering they've been pretty effective at kicking ass when they have to.)

But obviously-- there's a better approach.  Everyone in the world has been aware of it, and in support of it, for coming on 40 years.

What's the holdup?  Hardline warmongering Israelis on the one side and the radical Islamist splinter groups on the other.  You really want to throw in with one of the obviously *WRONG* sides in the discussion?  What are you thinking?

(FWIW: I think you're lying pretty hard there with the personal claims.)

I am fascinated by so many on this site's willingness to be willfully ignorant .

I find it amusing, and a little bit scary, that many on this site ‘believe’ things  without sufficient evidence, and disbelieve things despite the presence of abundant evidence. Yes, quote Aristotle and the ignorant get apoplectic and vile, ever failing to apply their power of thought and instead reflexively reverting to vulgarity.

Some even see the pursuit of knowledge as something to be avoided; perhaps believing that it is of little use unless it actually helps one with one’s short term goals.

It's sad that so many on a really good site worship their willing ignorance. Truly pitiful.

Dagan must have missed the memo

( Now from the get go DO NOT take this statement I offer at face value.DO some of your own research before making proclamations, for if you do the facts will show you up as an imbecile)

There is no doubt that the Islamists and their followers want the destruction of not only Israel and the Jewish people, but of all people who are not part of their Geo-political “religion” which mandates that those not Muslim must be killed. Anyone that thinks that you can bargain with them is living in a world of fantasy. The Ayatollah and the President of Iran have both proclaimed that they intend to destroy Israel and the US.

What part of this is so difficult for people to understand. Obama has proclaimed his Islamic roots and that he is a Muslim in the past. He is a “Christian” only for the convenience of politics. This makes him a traitor and guilty of treason against the United States of America and an apostate in Islam. Hillary has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood working on her staff which are accessible to the sensitive state materials that are being given to the enemy as evidenced in Libya and Benghazi. We must remove this threat from our government, our country and eventually it must be removed from the world or we will all find ourselves fighting just to survive.

The threat of Iran gaining the capability of producing a nuclear weapon is Iran providing them to Hamas and Al Qaida. If the nuke is detonated from within Isreal or the U.S., how do tell where the bomb originated from? Iran would deni providing it. Most evidence would be distroyed in the blast. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard already has ties to Mexican drug cartels. It wouldn't be hard for them to sneak a bomb acrossed our porous southern boarder and detonate a nuke from with the U.S.

This will be met with much glee by the ignorant but I'm outta here. The effort in trying to inform and educate people who want neither is a total waste of my time.

To those who celebrate their ignorance I leave you with this. Your insular non thinking will make you the first people to perish in a tight situation. I wish you well but you are unable or unwilling to accept knowledge if it conflicts with "notions" you believe are sound.

My time is too valuable to waste another word.

Funny, the head lawyer for the 911 Commission, appointed by Bush himself, says the whole Commission Report is one big lie:

http://world911truth.org/the-911-commission-rejects-own-report-as-based-...

He's not alone. Other Commissioners wanted to toss the whole thing in the Justice Dept's lap.

And people say insiders aren't speaking out. Wow.

Whoa, you need to smoke a doob and relax, buddy.

I'll agree with you that Netanyahu is a rabid warmonger. However, he is every bit as much a threat to the people of Israel, and Jews worldwide, as he is to the people of Iran and the rest of the world.

Can't you see that he is deliberately trying to fan the flames of anti-Jewish hatred? That's how, in his warped view, he consolidates his power. If Jews aren't being persecuted, they have no need to turn to a Messiah Bibi for protection.

It is important to remember the distinction between any corrupt government and the people who must live under and endure that corrupt government. Netanyahu's words and acts reveal him to be, at heart, an anti-Jewish Zionist. If his hatred causes you to to wish harm to the people of Israel, you've fallen into his trap.

Why do only jews have the term "jew hate?".  Why do jews not get accused of hating gentiles, which their religion most certainly promotes?  Why do only jews get permission to hate the entire rest of humanity?

Try this lovely daily prayer of Jewish males: "Thank you g_d you did not make me a slave, a woman, nor a gentile".  How do you female gentile supporters of Israel like that, huh?

Or this lovely little ditty: "Even the best of the gentiles deserve only death."

And what about this pure unadulterated law of bigotry in the "JEWISH STATE OF ISRAEL": Palestinians, even after marriage to a jew, are forever banned from being citizens of Israel."  Now that's some ass-kicking democracy right there, ain't it?  I'm sure you "liberal" Americans just eat that up, no?

I wonder, how many of you stupid American jews, if you went to Israel, would pass muster to even be decalred "jew" by the Israeli Secretary of Jewish Law or whatever is the title of this god-figure who decides who is and who is not a jew?

First, unless you know something the Oxford Dictionary of the English language does not know, the word "j-e-w" first appeared in print (yes, first time ever in the known world) in 1775 AD.  Stop by your local library and check it yourself.  A play by Sheriden called The Rivals: "...she hath the skin of a mummy and the beard of a jew...".  Get it?  "Jews" (notice they do not self identify as "Israelites") did not exist prior to 1775 AD!  Jesus was absolutely positively not a jew because there was no such thing as a jew till 1775 AD.

Second, "Judaic" anthropolgy PhD. Arthur Koestler traced the DNA of "jews" to the central Eastern nation called Khazaria.  He absolutely proved their DNA does not trace to the middle east: http://assemblyoftrueisrael.com/TruthPage/JewsarenotIsraelites.htm

BTW, the sum total meaning of the word "Judean" is someone from Judea, with absolutely no religious meaning whatsover.

JJ, your comment is at least partly incorrect. Perhaps you have never read the King James Version of the Bible published in English in 1611, which frequently uses the word Jew. Furthermore, probably earlier English language versions of the Bible also, although I do not have a copy of earlier versions. Jew is a shortened English form of Judah, spelled with a letter D in Hebrew, also with a letter D in other languages such as Greek and Latin. Jesus was a Jew, from the Tribe of Judah, which lived in the land of Judah, as part of the land of ancient Israel. Greek and other languages are more precise in distinguishing between the people of Judah and the land of Judah. Judaeans were Jews, otherwise they were called other names, such as Stranger, or Foreigner.

Secondly, you should seperate Sephardic Jews from Ashkenazi Jews. Modern Israel has both. I do not know if Koestler actually used biological DNA, or only anthropology and history traditions.

There is a long history of debate about racial identity of Jews, versus religious identity of people of Jewish religion who converted from other ethnic backgrounds.

I am still intrigued by this Lyndsey Williams guy, the pastor claiming to have had the trust of the US Elites from the oil business in Alaska in the 1970's. He claims the US is going to destabilize the Mid East, leave the region and go open up some big oil fields in Alaska capped for this exact moment in the 1970's. Now I would love to think that if we have a lying secretive Government, that they at least look our for us in the end.

I must admit, so far this story is being followed very close to the script Williams lays out. This suddent turn by Obama and the US Brass telling Israel you are on your own, really? Who can beleive this?

I don't understand William's story, why would we spend so much time and money in teh Mid East than to just walk away....well, check this out, if they really wanted to "send them back to the stone age" they would need to get rid of Hussein, Mubarak and Kaddafi then invest nothing in propping up the next round of dictators, send the dollar into collapse and open up our own oil fields. Think about this, it's so crazy it sounds like it might work. Why be so evil with the rest of the world?

Mysterious nuke detonates in New York or London or Tel Aviv. Immediately press stories surface how our entire military was conveniently involved in simulated nuke attack war games and was caught completely off guard and unable to prevent the attack. Defense spending is raised at once to prevent similar tragedy from recurring and the top brass are promptly promoted in reward for their incompetence. The nation's poobahs who should have been evaporated are all conveniently not at grounds zero; various last minute meetings and schedule changes you understand. A group of high-fiving Israeli art students is arrested near the scene
but subsequently released, the case sealed for reasons of national security. The mushroom cloud is still billowing as Kissinger comes on Agitprop News Network and muses that only Iran has the means and motive to stage an event of such a magnitude... American war fatigue is retired and we all line up at the local recruiting office to go kills us some Eyerainyuns. Wad I miss? Oh, of course, massive shorts a day before the attack go uninvestigated--someone suuuure did get lucky--and it is subsequently learned that a slew of Jewish property owners had all taken out insurance against a nuclear attack just weeks before the incident; on advise of their wives. Some people are just born lucky I guess. Oh, and death to Eyeran.

Not that I am an Israeli apologist;  I fucking DETEST Netanyahu and his ilk and their fascist regime.  But if one looks at the realities facing Israel, I can see a rationality in Netanyahu's position.  We hit peak oil in '05, and Saudi oil fields are producing as much salt water as oil.  There is still a lot of production going on, but it is decreasing in the ME, not increasing.  Sooner or later, those spigots are going to slow to a gold-priced trickle, and when they do, Israel is going to get a bad case of acne, sprout underarm hair and require pop-bottle glasses to get to class, and no one will be taking her to the prom.  Faced with her potential future spinsterism, she's decided to get pregnant right now, thus ensuring she's got a lock on the BFF she can find.
