"I Am Jim Rogers And I Support Ron Paul"

Tyler Durden's picture

Ron Paul has another illustrious supporter - Jim Rogers. The Quantum fund co-founder, who has been spot on about pretty much everything for the past 3 years (see Roubini Versus Rogers Is Right Debate for 2010: Investor Jim Rogers thinks gold will double to at least $2,000 an ounce. Economist Nouriel Roubini says that’s “utter nonsense.” As these well-known market personalities duke it out, they’re doing us a favor by highlighting a critical debate: Which is the bigger threat -- inflation or deflation?), not to mention gold (to the amusement of such Keynesian soundbites recorded for posterity as the following: "Maybe it will reach $1,100 or so but $1,500 or $2,000 is nonsense"), and especially inflation (perhaps the only thing that will prompt a chuckle out of Gadaffi and Mubarak these days is someone telling them that their multi-decade reigns are over due to hyperdeflation and plunging food prices), was caught on tape voicing his endorsement of the only sane person who can possibly do something for this country. "In this election if Ron Paul gets anywhere near the nomination I would certainly support him. He is the only one that I've seen in American politics that seems to have a clue about what's going on." Zero Hedge agrees on all counts.

PaprWillBurn,@13:33,

Doesn't matter much if you're buying bars or bracelets

Sure it does, you will be far more likely to be keeping jewelry made of PM's, than Eagles, etc.

IMHO.

I'd think the greater the wealth disparity and the higher the price of PMs and jewels the less jewelry may be adorned publicly.

Not sure why anyone else is junking you... It's a great point.

Any resoucre can exhibit currency characteristics based on demand, and I agree that as long as the purchasing value of a person's savings can't be confiscated via arbitrary creation of said currency, the world would be much better off...

The issue we face as a species is that there are people who want to DENOMINATE the value of any/all currencies so that they can implement a legal basis to take some fraction of your productivity (or your savings) away from you and use it for purposes that you may not endorse or condone. This is fundamentally unethical.

A cow farmer should be able to price his beef for whatever he wants in exchange for it... and the market should be able to set a price that it is willing to pay for said beef.

The basis of the bid ask spread is  the foundation of all efficient markets.

Money that does not serve double duty as viable capital is a corruptive force to free markets. It must therefore be extinguished once and for all.

The feds will get you as they have already outlawed barter. They want to tax anything and everything. When Nicolas Tesla threatened to publicize his patent of static electricity and give practically everyone free power generation, Morgan made the comment that he would not allow anything that he cannot put a metering device on it. (for taxation) there you have it.

You now can not store rain water falling on your property in some states.

how many people have been convicted of bartering in the US?

how many are awaiting trial right now?  what jurisictions are they being held in?  links?

or maybe something real if that's too much of a problem, ok, to come up with the Bartering Dragnet?

let's leave tesla out of it, and the rainwater herring, and just give me the info on the "barter outlaws" ok?  who, what, where, when, you know, styoooopid stuff like that, ok?

the problem w/ barteringfor labor at your house is that if somebody gets hurt on your property, working for you, they are probably gonna own yer property if they have even an average lawyer.  you hafta be much more careful with labor than w/ suppliers.  if somebody gets blinded, no negligence anywhere, just an accident, while working for you in exchange for bottled water, (s)he'd better feel that you are the kinda person who will take care of her for the rest of her life or you are gonna have a plateful of lawsuit, even if you are polish

Gold makes the perfect currency. It has minimal industrial uses. It does not offer any cash flows so it cannot be over-valued in the traditional sense. It is fungible. It has value because people throughout the ages have uniformly agreed that it is valuable. If industrial metals were currency that would be horrible. It would drive people to hoard a commodity that has immense utility to society. As result the price would rise dramatically. Eventually the price would drop like a rock when people realize that at the current high prices the industry metal has no utility to society. The best part about gold is that it does not have much use to society it just looks really good. People can hoard as much of it as they want and society will not be deprived of some vital commodity to industry. Pig Shit? That is absurd. You give me all your gold and I will give you pig shit in return.

koaj ,

most of the market for gold is in jewelry, not currency

You are SPOT on, it is.

But, one major flaw, MOST of the world buys PM jewelry as a store of Wealth, and their station in the caste systems,, and hierarchy.

But, for investment/store of wealth  is #1.

Plus, Currency is by nature Paper.

Gold is not paper.

Most people here have switched to physical coins, from making shorts in a broken market that ZH points out daily. That probably happened a few years ago. I don't think this website generates enough shorts to do anything like you speak of. Maybe 10-20% of posters mention actually playing options.

Rogers just said, "Become a Chinese Farmer, That's What You Should Do."

At some times in history, the financials types have been in charge; at other times in history the people who produced real goods have been in charge. It's the way the world has always worked. The key of course is to figure out what's coming next and go there. Become a Chinese farmer, that's what you should do. - in BBC News

I beleive she is right when she says the CCP would just come nationalize the land and make our production support the hundreds of peasant workers (comrades) forced upon us IF the SHTF in China.

No war profiteers are probably the least efficient place to allocate capital invented by man, but that doesn't change the fact that hundreds of thousands of soldiers would be discharged and looking for work alongside the other 16-25% of unemployed Americans.

Forgive me for wanting presidential candidates to think their proposed policies through instead of coming up with something that sounds good on paper, but doesn't pan out in the real world.

As an example, what do you think happens to the price of gas when we wind down "Operation Southern Watch"? What do you think that does to the economy?

Do you think the rest of the world will change because RP won? Really? Really really?

You DO realize that paying unneeded military personnel is absolutely no different than paying someone welfare, right?  You do realize that the amount of money spent on said military personnel as at least an order of magnitude higher than just their salary, right?

If you feel oh so bad about having them unemployed, then give them a 100% unemployment benefit.  We can use the other 90% we saved to cut the deficit to zero, and start paying down the debt.

But you would rather be a defeationist, I suppose.

I couldn't find defeationist in a dictionary and you've missed my point entirely. I don't want troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Saudi Arabia either, but that doesn't obviate the need to address the problems stated above.

And cutting the entire defense budget (y'know those other 'welfare' jobs making bombs, radars, and MREs) wouldn't make the deficit zero or pay down any of the debt.

Sun, 08/28/2011 - 01:22 | 1608950 tmosley
tmosley's picture

lol, meant defeatist.  Whatever.

No-one is talking about cutting the ENTIRE defense budget.  But yes, withdrawing from the wars, and from Germany, South Korea, and Japan would in fact negate the current budget deficit.

Current US deficit: $1.4 trillion.

Cost of the wars: about $370 billion/year.

Cost of US military bases per year: about $660 billion/year.

Cost per soldier (training, equipping, etc): about $459,000

Number of soldiers: 1.477 million.

Number of reserves: 1.459 million (couldn't find the cost right away).

Cost for soldiers: about $677 billion

Number of soldiers and support staff required to maintain and operate nuclear deterrent and homeland defense: about 150,000

Should be quite easy for you to see how cutting the military back to pure deterrent level EVEN WHILE LEAVING THE RESERVES AS THEY ARE would more than make up for the current highly bloated budget deficit.

Never mind the fact that Don Rumsfeld lost track of $2.4 TRILLION during the Bush administration, which would never have been placed in jeopardy had we not been invading other countries.

But you keep making baseless assertions without even bothering to check the facts.  It seems to be working so well for you here.

It's $1.5T, but what's a $100B between friends.

Your cost estimate is high even including med care for vets and financing of the appropriations (no, I'm not defending pissing money into the sand, I'd never have sent troops to any of the countries we're occupying now). I'll spot you $280B though...the appropriations for these misadventures are ridiculous.

The bases are more like $100B out of the $6XXB defense budget (I'm willing to look at hard evidence to the contrary; I've no personal interest in supporting the economy of Rammstein).

The cost per soldier is for combat troops, I hope you don't think all 1.5M of them are equipped with full kit. (150k troops in Iraq + Af-Pak) -> $75B

150k to defend the US is off by a factor of about 4 (assuming you mean repelling an attack on the continental US).

Rummy and the dumbass crew could not account for $24B, not $2.4T (someone check Eric Prince's pants).

You're the one who needs to check your "facts", but I'll look at whatever links you can substantiate with; otherwise, you're about $1T short.

I disagree in part. You are right about The Congress impeding anything meaningful. However a Ron Paul election would represent a massive upheaval of the current system. That would be hard to oppose. Ron and mayyyybe Herman Cain are the only ones that represent systemic change. As the system crashes...and it will, RP and those like him can continue to represent the alternative to the collectivist state.

You should look into the history of policies, including military actions, that have been unilaterally imposed by executive order. Those same things can be undone with executive order. So your thesis, excessive profanity notwithstanding, is invalid.

Actually, I think an RP presidency has two important implications:

  • If we can't get Congress to pass good laws (your arguement - I agree), at least we can prevent Congress from doing more damage via the veto pen.
  • The president is CIC (Commander in Chief) and thus under RP, troops would come home.

He can undo every single executive order ever issued with the stroke of a pen.  Considering the whoppers we have had to put up with over the last decade or ten, that's pretty damn good.

Never mind that he can also direct federal policing agencies to refrain from enforcing laws he considers unconstitutional.

The president has a lot more power than you seem to think.

I have been very busy with work of late.  It's nice to have a break so I can post regularly.

You are right that he might be assassinated, but that would do little more than cause a mass uprising at this point.  And it doesn't change the fact that the president DOES have the power to change a lot of things.  Whether they do or not is a matter of competence and bravery, which RP has plenty of.  Especially the bravery of old age, where one no longer cares so much about losing the few remaining years of his life.  It's the same reason why dastardly secrets are spilt upon the deathbeds of even the most cowardly men.

Mr. Paul, could do a MASSIVE take back,he is not a member of the NWO gang(that's why he will never get the Nom), and if he WERE to get it, he would be dead in a nano second.JFK was the last POTUS that tried to GET a handle on this Multi Tentacled Beast.

And, he left earth early also.

IF he got control or both the Senate and the House.

JW,

I am a long time lurker, but I seldom post unless I truly have something worthwhile to say.  I find reading Mosley has helped me to understand more of the whys and hows of our financial system, such as it is.  Turd F is another good one. As a substantial (by my financial means) convert to the validity of holding PMs, in particular silver, the analysis from Tmos is very enlightening.  Tmos backs up his analysis with substantial indicators, something often lacking from other posters.

I see you frequently prefer to sling insults from behind a keyboard. Such is the type I like to meet mano-to-mano (but fully clothed, mind you).

As I said, HE could declare a Natl Emg(and I damn sure think/know, we are way past one), and really shake the crap out.We need a GENERAL house cleaning, and he's the only one that knows it, and has the balls to do it.

Not! what do you want him to accomplish..

he has a secret service that is part of the treasury.. which someone reminded me oof here the other day.. and the secret service will stand down..

aside from the secret service..

someone else mentioned here..

Do I choose him over someone else.. NO! I want a Republican in office to cut social security. I dont want Ron to sully his name.

so.. those ideas might be more complicated than most can grasp..

but! I think that Ron would give it a go.. but I dont think he would get to first base without a secret service stand down happening first.

so.. whether Ilike him or not? I like some of what he has to say.. not nearly all..

do I think if he is in office he will get shit on.. YES!

do I think I would rather have him to rrally behind after the shit hits the fan! YES!!

is anyone thinking that far ahead other than me? maybe a few, but it damn sure aint the popular thing to say!
