Bullshit Labor Statistics (BLS) is doing its thang...

1.2 million working age people no longer have the honor & privilege of being 'counted' for purposes of tabulating unemployment + inherently flawed 'seasonal january adjustment' + a whole lot of temporary workers @ no benefits and minimum wage = turn an actual survey data of a loss of 2.6 million jobs into a BLS reported gain of 243,000 jobs.

Yeah....

....Recovery, bitchez!

If another 100 million Americans of working age can be 'not counted' by the BLS, the unemployment rate will drop to approximately 2%.

Wow. But Is the Number Real?

February 3, 2012, 10:13 am

By FLOYD NORRIS

How many jobs did the American economy add in January?

The Labor Department estimated on Friday that the economy gained 243,000 jobs.

The department also estimated that the economy lost 2,689,000 jobs in the month.

The difference in the two numbers is in seasonal adjustment. Employment always falls in January, as temporary Christmas jobs end. So the government applies seasonal adjustment factors in an effort to discern the real trend of the economy apart from seasonal fluctuations. The actual survey showed the big loss in jobs. The seasonal adjustments produced the reported gain of 243,000 jobs.

A reason to doubt the number is that there has been a tendency in this cycle for the seasonal factors to overstate moves, in both directions. Labor mobility is down, as fewer workers quit to seek better jobs and employers both hire and fire fewer people than they used to do. If the seasonal adjustment was too large, then the gain should be smaller.

Eat your  peas.

The civilian labor force participation rate dropped from December 2011 to January 2012 from 63.8% to 63.4%. this is the lowest it has been since May 1983. The employment-population ratio dropped from 58.5% to 57.8% from December 2011 to January 2012. So why has the unemployment rate dropped from 8.5% to 8.3%?

The civilian non-institutionalized population increased from 240,584,000 to to 242,269,000, a increase of 1,685,000, and more importantly the actual civilian employment dropped from 140,681,000 in December 2011, to 139,944,000 in January 2012.

Using the BLS data the employment was 139,994,000 and the civilian labor force was 153,485,000 for a unemployment rate of 8.8%. So there is a statistical correction with their numbers of 0.5%?

If you use the late 90s as a base line the unemployment rate is 139,994,000/164,112,000 = 14.7%. The 164,112,000 is based on a growth rate of 16.68% in the civilian non-institutional population increase since June 1999.

If you use more recent participation rate the unemployment rate INCREASED to 11.5%.

Either way you calculate it the federal government has decided they do not want Mitt Romney cutting their budgets and the propaganda war is on. Look for this bogus data to continue through election day.

Wow! 243000 New Jobs Created in January

The Economic Populist Speak Your Mind 2 Cents at a Time

Wow! 243,000 New Jobs Created in January

Submitted by Numerian on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 10:24

While a whopping number of jobs were created in January, a far larger number of people left the labor force - 1,752,000 in fact. The percent of the total working population who did not have jobs rose to 36.7%, an all time high. It’s no wonder the unemployment rate fell, when the denominator shrinks so markedly. The total number of people employed fell by 737,000. So what do you want to celebrate – the 243,000 who got jobs, or the million or so people who dropped by the wayside and are no longer counted in the data?

It makes you wonder how much faith you can put in the Labor Department reports. For example, the government, the business press, and Wall Street rarely report on the fundamental ways in which the US labor market is changing, with so many people dropping out of the work force. The press has had a hard enough time getting to grips with the Labor Department’s Birth/Death model, which over time adds to the number of people reported as employed. The model is supposed to compensate for the inability of the government to get good information on the number of new businesses created every month and which presumably add to employment. The problem is the model has been shown in the past to have significantly overestimated the number of jobs created by new businesses. Economists still don’t know if the model is appropriate, and how much of the 243,000 jobs created this month are the result of the Birth/Death model.

Airbrushing History...

"In a look over the surprisingly good Jobs Numbers from the US today, I was surprised to see that there had been a very thorough airbrushing of history. They even went back and revised the Birth Death Model which is an imaginary set of Jobs assumptions in the first place!

This would not be noticed unless someone has kept a copy of the old reports on their own records and spreadsheets. I only have them going back to 2002. But I have to say that the employment picture in 2003 does not even begin to look like 2003 did when it was reported only a few years ago. That changes that have accumulated over time are actually shocking." -Jesse Cafe American

AND THE CROWD ROARED & CHEERED WILDLY and there was happiness throughout the land!

Kind of brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?

I'll admit to not having expertise, but there's a lot of conflicting reports out there disputing ZH/Denninger/Santelli numbers (i.e. Barry Ritholtz).

There's a lot of math deficient Zerohedge haters out there. They nitpick Tyler's wording and completely ignore what he's saying mathematically.

The barman says "That'll be $10 please gentlemen"

"Oh no it's ok, just add it to the tab, we know it's over $16 trillion but El Presidente can just raise it another trillion" The three stooges reply

From personal experience.

"Worker on hourly pay at will"

Grovels: "But Boss, I cannot do anything with this shit equiptment...."

"Temp on assignment, when complete job finished"

Stands strong: "Your equiptment's failure to task is not my problem. Get it fixed next time so we can get this shit done.." (Hourly workers are angry and plan several ways to ensure Temp does not enjoy the sunshine.)

Hourly workers must travel on days off to mandatory meetings on which they will be told cost containment measures and what not to do. Temps are not required or expected to worry about these annoying employment conditions.

There are Agencies who round up Temps with a very basic IQ and they would be brought in to do jobs no one else will do in winter. "Open this door on command. Close door on Command. Understand!?"

Your back pain matters not, clock out and I will put another temp on your door. Stop whining.

Boss view on temps vs hourly workers.

Cost per week in gross hours times workers paid.

Or

Cost per batch of temps required to complete a revenue generating task. Ensure this cost is always less each year. Replace expensive Temp services with Street Collectors when possible.

Best job in the world. Herding Temps as a crew to do one task by yelling. Hey MF! Get over there now! RIght now!~ You too, double time. WHat the fuck! THis crew pisses me off.... abuse the crew until they get moving as one.

Then sit back and relax to enjoy the sun as crew automatically executes the job task without thinking now that you got em moving in peace towards the goal.

You will lose the less disclipined temps as they walk away one by one. When you have no more crew or no more stones to haul tell boss, thank you. See you next week.

Now the great reward goes to the more stubborn of your temps when they stand up to you and yell that you are not my bitch daddy and dont sign my check and give orders to me etc etc etc.

You assign them the leader crewman on the spot telling them, fine. You want my job? Have it right here and get to it. Im going fishing bye.

Some will learn in a short time how to run a crew or happily shut up and return to said crew. A few will be respected and make good crew leaders.

Eventually the year goes by and those who can lead are known while the new temps are shaken down.

It's rather Klingon-Like, but it is effective in sorting out the weak from the strong.

Evwentually with enough crews and leaders who answer to me, I become a temp company and hire the flowers to answer phones and chase hourly employers.

If enough people drop out or retire, we will get to 0% unemployment! And then we will realize that 58.5% of the population can't support 41.5% of the nonworking population.

Hey wait! We ARE Greece ... with a printing press!

i find this rather funny actually.  i quit my job at a new york location.  quit.  no benefits.  nothing.  ok, my choice.  i started receiving things about my 'retirement benefits'.  i don't have any, won't get any.  i got some things w-2 and such and it turns out that the company that i worked for have listed me as 'early retirement'.  i even got a package showing what my health benefits would be for 2012 ( zero, but they sent the documents anyway).  very strange to me all this, i'm working on figuring out what went on.  why would i choose 'early retirement' if there were no benefits?

When economic data, even contrived and manipulated data, encourages the sitting Administration to take credit for it, I'm curious as to why---after they say, "our policies are beginning to bear fruit"---no reporter asks them what specific policies contributed to the growth and ask them to describe the exact connection.

I fear the honest answer would be something to the effect of:  I appointed a new chief at the BLS.

unfortunately they can LIE much longer than I can stay Solvent. if the Finance press will not (ordered not to) give these Gov reports any basic math analysis what can I or any of us do?

Ben in his life long study of the depression understood one thing: never print bad news, make up only good news and keep repeating it..it will shorten the current depression. He will print and bail out the TBTF to keep it rolling until the recovery... I do not agree.

these BIG LIES cannot put anyone to work or food on the table or remove the mounting debt.

A mid east saying: The sword of ALLah is the empty bellies of the poor.

They wanted a globalized NWO economy - they have it now..it will be an event on that global paper house that burns us all down.
