As a guy who deals with them daily, I must say I'm both surprised and not that it held out as long as it did. Those particular Dell models (actually made by Sony) are pretty durable. The flatscreens have additional glass in the front panel for added structural support, so they are much beefier than a comparative monitor. Still, that thing took an exceptional beating and still stayed intact as far as its general frame until the bitter end, and the fact that the cord held throughout is a testament to their strength. It is a fact that one can be carried by its cord.
As far as the vacuum, the neck of the CRT likely broke off very early (probably cracked from the first or second blow) and the vacuum was long since "released". So when he did finally breach the CRT shell it wouldn't have imploded anyway. I've had these suckers fall from several feet and survive no problem. It's when they fall flat on their face that they stand the most chance of having a critical failure and imploding (which is always an interesting acoustic experienced coupled with a physical sensation if you are close enough and the tube is big enough...a 35" television tube imploding makes a definite impact when you're in close proximity).
Anyway, sorry to get all nerdy and interject this, but I know me my CRTs from hands-on handling and deconstructing experience. They are fucking durable and can take a beating, as you just witnessed.

And I see the anger in people now, and people talking about hanging the banksters and chopping off heads (I know, these things happen in the world now, but it isn't widely accepted behavior), and the thought occurs to me that people could become so outraged that these things are again accepted as appropriate punishment for certain crimes. Kinda scares the shit out of me. I don't think I could be the one dishing out that kind of pain, but obviously others can. The future is dark, indeed.
The other day you'd alluded to that gift of clarity, just how special it is during a confusing, emotionaly charged time such as this... with which I wholly concurr. A true gift of cogent presence. Alternatively, another fellow with whom I speak regularly was commenting upon that hidden little voice at times that senses the oddity, the feeling, the hunch that not everybody else sees it with such alacrity, and that opening up fully to others can be difficult, as many will engender the look as if there is something terribly wrong. Kinda like being the last fellow whose not yet slept in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
There are times that one almost wants to retreat back into the Matrix of the MSM/PR/perceptions managed information environment, while all false, even as an addiction, yet when totally subsumed, like opium; a warm, comforting, sensual, calming enveloping but artificial nowhereland of comfort exists. Entirely false, a single great monolithic lie driven forward by the huge faceless impersonal Levathian beast considered of pure deciet and evil. Yet easy. Easier for that short moment.
To then be jolted back to reality when a blatant offensive image is foisted upon, increasing in size, magnitude, duration, the depth and breadth of which, the presence of the lie is so great that it becomes intolerable. So intolerable and glaringly childish in it execution that it is insulting. Welcome relief back to reality.
Fully recognizing that it is what it is, no more and no less. Without control and most often immediate measurable impact. So one once again appreciates the real, no matter what its condition, is grateful for the alacrity, the clarity of thought, likewise defined as sanity. I am sane. I am becoming the man that I am. Simply praying for the best whilst planing for the worst and accepting that it as it is with appreciation that once again, I can enjoy the wonderment and ecstacy of the real.
So as I too see darkness my brother, I do what I must today in the now, for that is all I can. And essentialy in doing so, followingmy best conscience, committing no more eggregious errors against others, being the best husband and father that I might, in giving back, maybe in its own small way a bit of light is carried forth to offend that coming darkness.

My buddy visited the USA a few months ago, and afterwards we talked about what he saw regarding the culture. In the end, we came to the conclusion that by now, the culture really isn't that much different to ours (germany), besides of americans being much more wasteful especially with packaging.... this similarity impressed us quite a bit, because:

2. The USA and europe are popularily thought to be culturally quite different
3. The american two-party duality.
4. We're export-sick, while they're import-sick.
