Obama Issues Statement On SCOTUS Arizona Immigration Law Ruling

Tyler Durden's picture

Just out from the TOTUS, who manages to convert a Supreme Court slap into a piece of pre-election propaganda like no other.

Following the Supreme Court’s ruling this morning on Arizona’s immigration law, President Obama released this statement:

I am pleased that the Supreme Court has struck down key provisions of Arizona's immigration law. What this decision makes unmistakably clear is that Congress must act on comprehensive immigration reform. A patchwork of state laws is not a solution to our broken immigration system—it’s part of the problem.

At the same time, I remain concerned about the practical impact of the remaining provision of the Arizona law that requires local law enforcement officials to check the immigration status of anyone they even suspect to be here illegally. I agree with the Court that individuals cannot be detained solely to verify their immigration status. No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like. Going forward, we must ensure that Arizona law enforcement officials do not enforce this law in a manner that undermines the civil rights of Americans, as the Court’s decision recognizes. Furthermore, we will continue to enforce our immigration laws by focusing on our most important priorities like border security and criminals who endanger our communities, and not, for example, students who earn their education—which is why the Department of Homeland Security announced earlier this month that it will lift the shadow of deportation from young people who were brought to the United States as children through no fault of their own.

I will work with anyone in Congress who’s willing to make progress on comprehensive immigration reform that addresses our economic needs and security needs, and upholds our tradition as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. And in the meantime, we will continue to use every federal resource to protect the safety and civil rights of all Americans, and treat all our people with dignity and respect. We can solve these challenges not in spite of our most cherished values—but because of them. What makes us American is not a question of what we look like or what our names are. What makes us American is our shared belief in the enduring promise of this country—and our shared responsibility to leave it more generous and more hopeful than we found it.

In light of this, we can't wait to see what happens if and when Obamacare is overturned on Thursday.

Basically, he will not enforce what SCOTUS ruled as constitutional AND he's pushing congress for amnesty... brilliant.

Obama and Romney won't have to fret about immigration the next 10 years....at the rate of them killing jobs for the sake of the almighty corporate profit margin, Mexicans will be leaving or just won't come here, anyways.

The whole point of drawing immigrants are good jobs; not even the white citizens can get good paying jobs.

Well, Obama can just find out which illegals DIDN'T vote for him in November, and then simply drone strike them in retribution.

Unless, of course, they are "dancing Israelis"....

More interesting than the immigration decision was the decision today striking down the Montana law against independent campaign donations.

It's just stunning to see the faulty premise from Citizen's United, reprised in the dissent: "[Breyer:] In Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Court concluded that “independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.”"

This has got to be one of the all-time, Big Lies in the history of humanity. How the rotten five can bear to show their faces in public is beyond my comprehension. I certainly know what gives the appearance of corruption: a court that rules in favor of corruption and corporate power above people over and over and over again.

Breyer points out the problem with the fallacy saying: "Moreover, even if I were to accept Citizens United, this Court’s legal conclusion should not bar the Montana Supreme Court’s finding, made on the record before it, that independent expenditures by corporations did in fact lead to corruption or the appearance of corruption in Montana. Given the history and political landscape in Montana, that court concluded that the State had a compelling interest in limiting independent expenditures by corporations."

Well, if we can't ship them home, I say we take up a collection and buy Jan Brewer a great big bus.  She could load it up with illegals, truck them up to D.C. and dump them on Capitol Hill.  That's not deporting, right?  They're still in the good ole U.S.A.  Come on, who's in?  I've got 50 bucks burning a hole in my pocket I'd pony up for the cause.

Illegals can get a free ride home on a jumbo jet. Several charity and "humanitarian" organizations already provide frist class self-deportation options.

I don't know what everybody is so worked up about!

Illegals are self deporting faster than shit through a goose, AND forced deportations are going through the roof. Hell even citizens are becoming expats in record numbers.

If you're the last one to leave don't forget to turn off the lights!

Not sure I agree this was a "slap" to Obama, and believe me, I am not in favor of the unitary executive theory that Bush and Cheney so doggedly pursued. On balance, the Court's ruling clearly supports the rights of the federales over the states when it comes to immigration policy.  By the way, this should give you a clue that Thursday's ruling will uphold most of the healthcare law and the individual mandate, being "federal authority" concepts.

And you may note that any law and upholding any law disfavoring Mexicans immigrating just hardens the Hispanic vote in O'Bammer's direction.

Jest sayin'

Obama is a disgrace... didn't this dross take an oath to uphold the Constitution?  Like Bush/Cheney, they crapped on it instead... Why all this support of people in our country ILLEGALLY??  And paying them welfare, healthcare and food stamps is what REALLY chaps my asshole.  It is not racism to despise parisite roaches, white, brown or Kenyan.

FWIW Dept:

Roberts clerked for Rehnquist - the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia is known today as the incubator for most, if not all Supreme Court Justice nominees

Ps.   Roberts is a Rehnquist wannabee, but is coy and manipulative, whereas Bill called a spade a spade.     jmo

I can't imagine what life in the Private Residence is like these days. Probably pretty chilly.

All this work....

You know Momma ain't givin up any of dat ass to Barry. She is pretending to busy herself worrying about the next overseas shopping trip.

The kids are probably catching all kinds of shit from their friends so they are likely nowhere near 1600.

The dog is hiding in the rose garden hoping not to get kicked again.

And then there is POTUS Sotoro, depressed, walking in the halls, talking to all the old paintings on the wall seeking inspiration.

Pausing, he notices the carpet is overly worn beneath the portrait of Roosevelt...

Its lonely at the top.

What a joke. This black president doesn't care one eyelash about civil rights.

Civil rights are the poor mans problems.  Just look at the rotten excuse of guilty because you're guilty, the TSA -- 100% executive branch perversion.

That's not fair.  He cares about civil rights for the richfolk, and they're the folks who run the country.  He's representing his constituency.
