Obama Promises Russia To Be More "Flexible" After Election

Tyler Durden's picture

In today's open mic farce that has made the president a target of a fresh republican onslaught, we have Obama telling Russian presidential pawn Dmitry Medvedev that "this is his last presidential election", and that he will have "more flexibility after the election." One can only assume that Obama is referring to the aggressive NATO expansion which has angered Russia substantially as noted previously, and even led to Russia putting radar stations on combat alert. It could be this or it could be anything, including US posturing vis-a-vis Syria assuming the stance a huanitariam, if completely impotent, do-gooder globocop, or for that matter any other foreign policy fiasco in which Russia now have the upper hand by default. Naturally, one wonders why Obama would be pandering to Russia (well, aside for the country's premier export position when it comes to nat gas and crude of course) in the first place. Or more importantly, as the GOP has now figured out, why does the president need to be more flexible after the election to begin with, and to what other special interest will Obama be far more responsive than to his mere electorate. Either way, nothing but more theater as central planning continues on its merry way to terminal dislocation with reality.

More from CNN:

The video features the clip of Obama and Medvedev holding a private conversation at the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea. During their talk, which was caught on camera and on microphone, Obama asked his Russian counterpart for some "space" on the U.S.-led NATO missile defense system in Europe.

"This is my last election," Obama told Medvedev. "After my election I have more flexibility."

While Obama put his hand on Medvedev's arm, the Russian president responded saying he would transmit the information to the incoming president, current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

But Republicans seized on Obama's request as an opportunity to frame the president as a politician primarily focused on re-election.

"It's amazing what we find out about this president's policies when he thinks no one is listening and it begs the question: What else doesn't Obama want us to know about before he's reelected?" Kirsten Kukowski, RNC spokeswoman, said.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also came out against Obama's comments, saying the moment represented "an alarming and troubling development."

"This is no time for our president to be pulling his punches with the American people. And not telling us what he's intending to do with regards to our missile defense system, with regards to our military might and with regards to our commitment to Israel and with regard to our absolute conviction that Iran must have a nuclear weapon," Romney said while campaigning in San Diego.

His team launched a new Twitter campaign Monday, highlighting the president's remark.

From his Twitter account, Romney asked followers to fill in the blank: "@BarackObama: I'll have more flexibility to ______ after the election."

Pushing back, the Obama campaign said Romney was distorting the president's words.

"Governor Romney has been all over the map on the key foreign policy challenges facing our nation today, offering a lot of chest thumping and empty rhetoric with no concrete plans to enhance our security or strengthen our alliances," Ben LaBolt, the campaign's press secretary, said in a statement. "Instead of passing the buck, it is time that Governor Romney shared his foreign policy agenda with the American people."

Naturally, the show must go on for the general public (which would be wise to please dump its entire life savings in the Bernie Bernankoff Asset Management ponzi scheme post haste - have you seen the monthly returns? just scorching!), even as all truly important decisions are made deep behind the scenes, and are accompanied by electronic sacks of money, where the squid in one capacity or another, always "makes a market."

Obviously this guy is more comfortable being Candidate Obama, rather than POTUS.

They all are more comfrontable being "Candidate" rather than POTUS. Winning is the only thing. Governing is delegated.

Except for Ron Paul, none of the GOP candidates have come out with any "real" plans.

They are going ban contraception....ban Obama care. There are 50m Americans with no health insurance, and health inflation running at over 48% a year. And thoughts your fucking GOP morons on what policy should look like? Note - i am not PRO obama care. Just noting, as a candidate, it is really easy to be against the current POTUS's agenda, then to offer comprehensive solutions.

And what have the GOP come out for......bombing Iran and starting a trade war with China.

Actually they have.

All the way throught the "debate" on ObamaCare proposals were put forward. For instance buying health insurance across state lines. If one state mandates you have breast implants on your policy (just sayin) thus raising it's price tag to you the consumer and you find one that doesn't in South Dakota and it's cheaper but covers what you want covered...sans fun bags...you could buy it there.

There were many proposals that never saw the light of day because they were minority proposals and they wanted everything run through the government.

Besides, it's un-constitutional. We, as a country, still believe in common law don't we? You can't force someone into a contract (health insurance or otherwise) without it being voluntary.

And no one is trying to ban contraception lizzie. You can't afford nine bucks out of your purse to keep everyone elses price down? ;-)

It is illegal to drive a car without insurance. One is fined for doing so. How is this different (the answer is this is a federal mandate versus a state mandate - but the state is still forcing an individual into a contract or they risk a fine).

I was talking about alternative(s) being put forth by the current GOP candidates.

The issue with contraception is the hahahaha point about Rick Santorum SAYING "states should have the right to ban contraception".

The point about the health care debate is that the US spends 50% more than any other industrialized nation, per person. Yet outcomes are worse, and 50m people don't have health care coverage.

Back to my initial point, it is easier to be a Candidate than it is to be POTUS. Candidate is winner take all.

None of this should be read as an endorsement of any candidate. Personally think they are ALL the same side of the coin.

I know you are not this breathtakingly stupid, so what gives? Bad day? If you don't care to pay insurance for the inherently dangerous act of driving, then you are welcome to walk or bicycle. How you conflate that with "Insure your ass or face a fine" in the Land of the FREE is beyond me.

"It is illegal to drive a car without insurance."

No it's not. It's illegal to drive on PUBLIC roads. That's where law applies, not on private property. I would think ones own body is the most private thing one has.

>>>(the answer is this is a federal mandate versus a state mandate - but the state is still forcing an individual into a contract or they risk a fine).<<<

I have no idea what you're talking about. There is no state mandate outside of that other bastion of freedom Massachusetts...lol.

"I was talking about alternative(s) being put forth by the current GOP candidates."

They all agree ObamaCare needs to go for exactly what I pointed out. When a different crop of pols come in you will have the precedent of law in place. You will be forced to buy whatever they deem necessary at the time. From a Volt to a Mauser.

"The issue with contraception is the hahahaha point about Rick Santorum SAYING "states should have the right to ban contraception"."

Did he say ban contraception? I genuinely don't know. But if he did so what? I don't think it would pass in any state so it's irrelevent even if he did. Sounds more like a states rights issue than a "contraception" issue...and no, I didn't vote for Santorum in Fla.

"The point about the health care debate is that the US spends 50% more than any other industrialized nation, per person. Yet outcomes are worse, and 45m people don't have health care coverage."

Yeah, and we have everyone from Saudi princes to Canadian govenors coming here to be ill-treated...right.

And the number I seen on Bloomberg this morning was 32 million don't have health insurance. So the idea was to clip the 90% who do? Let's just revamp the whole thing to cover people who don't want it? When I was young I didn't have it and didn't want to spend money on it. Any of my injuries (whih were numerous...lol) I paid out of pocket. I didn't whine for someone else to pick up my tab when I wrecked my motorcycle...I paid the damned bill...myself.

I've seen the Harvard study, it doesn't hold water.

"Back to my initial point, it is easier to be a Candidate than it is to be POTUS. Candidate is winner take all."

Yes it is. Unfortunately the worst possible of many was hired for the job last time.

For crying out loud Lizzy, we're not baby killers, we just want people to be responsible for themselves...we are all broke anyways.

In some states you do not  need insurance to drive on public roads.  You can post a bond, such as in California.

Thank you. I am fine with being junked. If people disagree with what i am saying i thnk it is great for them to express it. Last thing i would ever want is 100% agreement. That is just a gurantee that i am wrong.

The point about it being a state mandate was on the car insurance issue. States mandate car insurance. The mandate demanding all citizens have healthcare is a federal mandate.

The issue is your body is private, you live a public life with public consequences. One decides to smoke, drink, become obese.....and it isn't just one who pays the consequences for those actions.

You paid the bill yourself. The point is most do not pay the bill themself. You pay a portion of it.

I never said for the top 20% (in the US and the world) US healthcare doesn't work. So does just about everything else in the US work for the top 20%. For everybody else not so much:

Life expectancy at birth in the USA is 50th in the world, below most developed nations and some developing nations. It is below the average life expectancy for the European Union. WHO, in 2000, ranked the U.S. health care system as the highest in cost, first in responsiveness, 37th in overall performance, and 72nd by overall level of health (among 191 member nations included in the study). The Commonwealth Fund ranked the United States last in the quality of health care among similar countries, and notes U.S. care costs the most.

There are 2 issues that are collapsed into one here. One: The increasing cost of US medical care, where the top 20% benefit and the bottom 80% don't. Two: What to do with the uninsured.

I am not a proponent of ObamaCare. I am a proponent of forward thinking and an ounce of prevention.

We want everyone to be responsible for themselves, is an interesting concept. The problem is, when an uninsured individual has a heart attack, shows up at an ER, what do you do? As it stands right now, the law is you have to treat them. An uninsured person whether voluntary or involuntary, shows up with a stage 4 colon cancer tumor, obstructing their large bowel, necessitating emergency surgery to remove the tumor follow up is rounds of chemo and radiation. If that person had a preventative colonscopy, chances are the polyp gets removed, and the cost is about $2500 vs the $500k for the former treatment.

The point is the same for the TBTF banks. Prevention. Fricking break them up before the necessitate a $5T bailout.

I have no clue the best way to attack health care. I just know, like the banks the status quo is NOT working for anyone but the upper 20%.

"I am fine with being junked."

I know...but if I didn't engage in a little chivalry every now and then I couldn't live with myself...you'll just have to deal with me being me, sorry ;-)

"States mandate car insurance."...for those driving on public roads. As the gentleman above points out, I had forgotten about surety bonds.

"The mandate demanding all citizens have healthcare is a federal mandate."

We need to think and look at this for a moment. Look at what is being disussed here. Mandates...demanding...federal...this should be alien and revolting to you and I. Why are people willing to give over control of their body to government for a price?...any price?

Where is the choice in that once you've done it? How can you "personally" control it then? In my estimation you've left it up to bean counters.

"Life expectancy at birth in the USA is 50th in the world..."

Source...come on Liz, it's me. Don't put it out there without sourcing it.

But I'll take it at face value just the same. The WHO also called the Swine Flu a pandemic. It wasn't. They also had staff members invested in pharma companies with degrading vaccines to get rid of. And what levels of liberty were traded off for their being less than number one in responsivness like us?

"An uninsured person whether voluntary or involuntary, shows up with a stage 4 colon cancer tumor, obstructing their large bowel, necessitating emergency surgery to remove the tumor follow up is rounds of chemo and radiation. If that person had a preventative colonscopy, chances are the polyp gets removed, and the cost is about $2500 vs the $500k for the former treatment."

I would be interested to know how many 18-35yrs olds show up with stage four colon cancer. And upon finding out not too many, why we as an ever growing older society, have placed a mandatory monetary penalty on them for not showing up with it, to pay for those who are older, who do show up with it.

It's just the way I think Liz.

They are forcing young healthy people who don't see a need to have health insurance to buy something from a private corporation or pay a fine.

It's wrong, from an ethical (government & private is separate), moral (one has a right to their own body), and common contract law level (coersion, duress and force).

I'll give you the last word...for the evening ;-)

Why, why why can't we have a network of publicly funded primary care clinics, one on each neighboirhood, small town, how much can it cost? basic preventive care, basic public health, basic dental checkups, basic pediatrics... fuck, how much can 3000 primary care clinics cost? And then , like Cuba, when everyone is getting preventive care, everyone can buy catastrophic health insiurance, and it will be cheap (er) than we;re paying now.

So I see Lizzie's point about there being some sort of fix, but why do Americans always find the worst solution to the problem?

lizzy, I know this is not popular here - a small view from across the pond:

in europe, we basically have two systems: the national health service type (expensive - similar to what the US veterans have) and the swiss private but compulsive type (very expensive)

in the US, you have one additional part we europeans have not: the involvement of the employer.

now Obamacare is mostly a very complex adaptation of the Swiss system (mostly private healthcare by private insurers but with compulsive membership and a taxpayer help to those who can't pay)

but the part that is a political holy cow in the US is the very one that makes it possibly not feasible: the involvement of the employer - which, as it seems, drives costs even higher.

to put it in ZH-speak, for us europeans is puzzling how much the typical US worker wants to be a healthcare serf of the corporation that employs him...

of course, it's also very, very puzzling how the most important nation of the world can try to import and adapt a system from one of the smallest without ever mentioning that very point and without anybody ever looking how the copied/original system works in practice...

it is different because if you  and your car does damage to another individual, you should be responsible for some degree for their care.  one should NOT have to suffer the stupidity of others.

my youngest brother was 6 weeks in a coma having been hit in daylight by a drunk 40 year old speeding.  very speeding.  he was 5.  if my parents had not had insurance, who would have paid for this?

it is not a 'right' to be able to conduct  3 thousands pounds of steel going 60 miles an hour on small roads.

if however, i choose personally to not have health insurance - that doesn't effect you, your family or your offspring.  i choose to opt out of health care and suffer the consequences.  driving automobiles is a big responsibility.

Sorry, when it's your time to go, no amount of precaution or regulation can save you.  It is simply your destiny.  I don't think we should engage our gov't to provide any more solutions to matters that are out of our personal control.  Longevity is not determined by gov't regulation or law.  Those who live long just have the cognitive thinking skills it takes to survive.  Think about it

Soooo, in the two years since King Hussein passed his magic healthcare bill, the number has increased from 30 to 50 million?  Or is that just Bernanke-style inflation?  No one seems to want to distinguish between those who CAN'T get insurance and those who DON'T WANT to get insurance.  Neither number is nowhere near 50 mil, even added together.

US census suggested that in 2009 50.7m Americans had NO health care insurance.

Exact number is irrlevant. Lets say 30m.

Hey if you are a taxpayer in the US and fine with how ever many citizens free riding on your taxes....power to you.

If one of those uninsured, shows up at an ER, they are bound by law to treat them, you know who pays the cost of treatment, more often than not, the taxpayer.

My point in all this is Health Care is but one issue where merely being against ObamaCare is perhaps necessary but definitely not sufficient.

Lizzy Triage can be preformed and if it is not an emergency you will be referred to a 24 hour clinic.  The isuue you discuss about automobile insurance is not a federal mandate.  The states mandate and made automobile insurance a law as the fed was not allowed to do it.  Just like a states can mandate everyone is required to have medical insurance.  The fed does not and should not have that power.  The insurance mandate is a fine and not a tax which is illegal under the current constitution. This is not a tax.  No matter what you want to call it.

Our state is already 400 million in debt and we are going to have to add an additional 245,000 people to medicaid.  So how will this be paid?  There comes a time when enough is enough.  There are 5 issues the supreme court is listening during this battle.  I think the tax issue will be thrown out as congress overstepped it bounds.

If the Supreme court upholds that congress can do whatever it likes under the 10th article we will all be screwed.  The obamacare was not reform it shifted even more burden on taxpayers.  This is a fine and that is illegal under several articles of the constitution.  Even some of the justices chuckled at the administration's lawyer when he got confused himself trying to explain the tax. You want healthcare do it correctly and then we can talk.

That was my initial point (not well made) That car insurance is a state mandate not a federal mandate like health insurance will be. That is the distinction.

Thank you for your comments.

I am very curious as to how this can be construed as a tax.

Like i said i an not a proponent of Obamacare. But i do think health care is a massive issue, and merely repealing Obamacare does not mean the issue is gone.

Maybe it is unsolvable.

Once Obama has totally screwed everything over - then everyone has moral justification for hating black men and muslims - Divided States of America, its not just a dream anymore.

This is pretty funny - the dutch rudder comment is a winner, Obama has to be seen to be doing it himself, but without a black background we see strings :P  Reminds me of another saying, the post turtle - you see a turtle on a post, and you know he didnt get there by himself, and watching him flail about helplessly, all you want to do is help him to get down from there.

Despite the seriousness of this, its interesting to know that things of at least some importance actually come out of his mouth - not that the words are his own, but at least he gets to recite his lines to appropriate people.

Russia is the furthest from our nuclear terrorist problems. In fact they are a deterrent to the goings on between China/Pakistan/N.Korea's, nuclear proliferation to rouge states in the ME and Africa.

They [ China/Pakistan/North Korea] are selling to Sudan, Libya[no longer on list?], Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, and Kuwait,  just to name a few - fissile technology.

India is an ally of Russia for obvious reasons, and China and N. Korea, huge allies to Pakistan the epicenter of nuclear proliferation, period!

Iran is not the problem! The radical mullah Sunni's ,are the viper's - plotting the demise of the entire world via religion! The average Muslim are not in this ilk's camp, but these radical extremist brought to us by Osama bin-Laden. They are a scourge on the world, and they breed/ hibernate in Pakistan!

China is behind all that is happening with N. Korea. But, China has boxed itself into a corner. Why? If N. Korea starts a war/ skirmish with Japan - Japan will retaliate and cause a mass exodus of N. Koreans into China's already fragile economy which by the way geographically, is a very military intensified sensitive province of china, straddling, the East China Sea, and Sea of Japan.

Japan has no love for China and would rather drop a couple Atomic Bomb's on them if they had the resources,... because it's apparent that China is behind N. Korea's provocation and Japan knows this. The Taiwanese are slowly coming around to the Chinese with many a billionaire making his/her fortune in China and buying up all news outlets and promoting new relations with China - softening up the eventual repatriation of their once orphaned child. It seems to be working?

Now, back to Russia. They are no threat. What's happening in the ME is the fomenting and implementation of al-Qaeda 6-stage plan, which is already unfolding: ___  The Awakening - The Opening Eyes - The Rising and Standing Up - The Hated Arab Governments - The Declaration of a Islamic State - The Total Confrontation

America has to get it's head out of its ass, period! Because, this is the writing on the wall in plain sight,... from years of rogue U.S. Presidents lying to Congress and being accountable to no one!

What we have become is a fascist state, massaged by corporatism as Italy manufactured in  the late 30's and a fragmented Germany's of double-speak - a classical Orwellian mission creep, coming out of the shadows!

I don't buy the 'China fears a mass exodus from N. Korea' arguement. China is certainly quietly supporting the N. Korean nuclear program. Consider this: what will America do if N. Korea finally has the capabiliity to nuke the major cities of the American west coast, and does it? China would claim that it played no hand in the attack. America would at most nuke N. Korea. So what then? America would implode afterwards; the American century would be over, and would decline very fast to minor importance. I think we are in very grave danger.

Here's a question I brought up in ZHchat (which is pretty fuking cool and has a lot of potential):

Considering that we live in the era of NDAA, gov't monitoring of websites/social media, police state, etc., would you not prefer Barack Obama to the Republican nominee?  (Note I voted for RP but that dude is not getting elected.)

So let's deal with reality: seems like Barack - for all one wants to say about him, as this article, among many illustrates - is preferable to the Republican nominee, given the things I listed above.  And he's not the strongman coming to get you in the dead of the night.  He's actually a pretty considerate, thoughtful guy.

No trolling here - a vote for Barack in 2012 is not a bad call.  Thoughts, anyone?
