Paul Ryan Factbox, Nomination Reaction And Lifetime Donors

Tyler Durden's picture

Reuters summarizes the key facts about the 42-year old House Budget Chair and potential future American vice president.

  • Ryan, 42, a rising star among the populist Tea Party movement and fiscal conservatives who dominate the Republican Party, has served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives since first being elected in 1998.
  • Ryan attracted attention when, as chairman of the powerful House Budget Committee, offered a controversial plan in January 2010 to reform the tax code and eliminate the federal deficit. The plan relies on tax cuts and would minimize federal spending while drastically overhauling Medicare, the popular government-run health program for the elderly.
  • Romney endorsed that plan during the primaries, and by adding the Wisconsin congressman to the ticket, he makes the document the centerpiece of his run for the White House and raises the possibility that much of the campaign debate will be about spending, deficits and Medicare, rather than job creation.
  • Ryan could help Romney gain ground in his home state of Wisconsin, a battleground state that seems to be leaning toward Obama after a polarizing battle over the unsuccessful recall of the state's Republican Governor Scott Walker.
  • But because of Ryan's plan to cut Medicare, Romney also runs the risk of alienating seniors, a group that has narrowly backed Republicans in recent elections.
  • Before being elected to Congress, Ryan was an aide to conservative U.S. Senator Sam Brownback of Kansas and has worked with U.S. Senator Robert Kasten of Wisconsin. Ryan also worked for former New York congressman and one-time Vice Presidential candidate Jack Kemp. These experiences make him a creature of Congress - a political body that has become increasingly unpopular among voters in recent years.
  • Ryan is a fifth-generation Wisconsin resident. He grew up in Janesville before attending college at Miami University in Ohio. His father and grandfather died of heart attacks in their 50s, making him mindful of a healthy lifestyle and he exercises frequently.

And here are select reactions from various individuals across the political spectrum to his nomination:

WISCONSIN GOVERNOR SCOTT WALKER, REPUBLICAN

"Governor Mitt Romney made a bold and reform-minded selection in Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. This election has to be about who is going to look out for the next generation. America needs a comeback team to turn around the economy and to turn around the fiscal status of our country. Romney and Ryan have the ideas and the experience needed to take on these core issues. This is a great day for Wisconsin and an even greater day for America."

OBAMA CAMPAIGN MANAGER JIM MESSINA

"In naming Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy. ... As a member of Congress, Ryan rubber-stamped the reckless Bush economic policies that exploded our deficit and crashed our economy. Now the Romney-Ryan ticket would take us back by repeating the same, catastrophic mistakes."

FLORIDA GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT, REPUBLICAN

"Like Governor Romney, Congressman Ryan understands that government doesn't create jobs, people do, and that the best way to create jobs is to get government out of the way. I'm confident that Congressman Ryan will be a great partner for Governor Romney in getting America back to work."

TEA PARTY PATRIOTS, A CONSERVATIVE ADVOCACY GROUP

"Tea Party Patriots welcomes the selection of Paul Ryan as the vice-presidential running mate for Governor Mitt Romney. With this selection, Governor Romney and the Republican Party make it clear that they have accepted the Tea Party Patriots' values of fiscal responsibility, limited government and free markets as the best course of action for economic recovery and restoring personal freedom and individual responsibility to our national values."

MARY KAY HENRY, PRESIDENT OF THE SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION

"Representative Ryan has made a name for himself by fighting in the halls of Congress for tax giveaways for the wealthy and big corporations while proposing to gut vital services like Medicare and education, and eliminating any sense of retirement security for working families. His no-holds-barred record of attacking seniors, children, and working men and women is frightening for the 99 percent of Americans who are not rich -- but for Mitt Romney it was a calling card to choose him as a running mate."

U.S. SENATOR ROB PORTMAN, REPUBLICAN

"Mitt Romney has made a great choice in Paul Ryan. He is an accomplished public servant and a leading voice on the most pressing issues facing our country. Paul is one of my best friends in Congress and someone I have worked closely with as a former colleague on the House Ways and Means Committee."

FORMER MINNESOTA GOVERNOR TIM PAWLENTY, REPUBLICAN

"Congressman Ryan is a respected leader and a bold thinker regarding the changes needed to restore America. His selection will also help Governor Romney win the key swing state of Wisconsin. I am excited about a Romney-Ryan ticket and look forward to doing all I can to help them win this election."

FORMER U.S. SENATOR RICK SANTORUM, REPUBLICAN

"Congressman Paul Ryan is an outstanding choice as our country's next vice president, and today's announcement demonstrates Governor Romney's commitment to returning fiscal sanity back to Washington, D.C. I have long supported Paul Ryan's fiscal and entitlement reforms to return our country back on a path of fiscal health. At a time when our country is at an economic crossroads, Congressman Ryan's depth of knowledge on how to tackle these challenges is unparalleled. ... He is solidly pro-life, pro-family, and will be an advocate for our military and our national security priorities. I look forward to supporting the Romney-Ryan ticket in the weeks to come."

RICHARD TRUMKA, PRESIDENT OF THE AFL-CIO

"Whether its outsourcing American jobs or picking his running mate, Mitt Romney's proven just how bad his decision making is for working people. Aligning himself with the poster-child for ending Medicare and Social Security puts to rest any suggestion that Romney has a clue what the middle-class needs. We're witnessing the radical Tea Party extremes drive its final nail in what was once the Republican Party."

LOUISIANA GOVERNOR BOBBY JINDAL, REPUBLICAN

"Paul is a good friend and one of the smartest guys I served with in Congress. He has the courage of his convictions, which is what our nation needs."

SENATE MAJORITY LEADER HARRY REID, DEMOCRAT

"By picking Representative Paul Ryan, Governor Romney has doubled down on his commitment to gut Social Security and end Medicare as we know it. Romney's choice demonstrates that catering to the Tea Party and the far-right is more important to him than standing up for the middle class. The months ahead will provide Americans with a clear choice between the Romney-Ryan plan to gut Social Security and Medicare and Democrats' balanced approach to deficit reduction that combines smart spending cuts with asking millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share. Democrats in the Senate look forward to engaging in that debate."

HOUSE MINORITY LEADER NANCY PELOSI, DEMOCRAT

"There is no question that former Governor Romney now owns the Republican Ryan budget that puts millionaires ahead of Medicare and the middle class. Congressman Paul Ryan led House Republicans in voting to end the Medicare guarantee, which increases costs on seniors and weakens America's great middle class in order to give tax breaks to millionaires, Big Oil and corporations that ship jobs overseas."

JUSTIN RUBEN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MOVEON.ORG, A LIBERAL ADVOCACY GROUP

"Romney and Ryan are the 1 percent Dream Team. Representative Paul Ryan is an extremist ideologue who wants to end Medicare, radically redistribute wealth to the top 1 percent, and throw America's middle class under the bus. Ryan's proposed budget would cost America more than a million jobs in less than one year. Like Romney, Ryan believes the poor and middle class should pay more so the rich can get richer. Romney's choice of Ryan is sure to energize MoveOn's more than 7 million members as we work to ensure voters know the truth about Romney and Ryan's extreme plans to demolish Medicare, raise middle class taxes to fund tax cuts for billionaires, and destroy jobs."

Finally, from Open Secrets, here is a list of the industry support for Paul Ryan throughout his career, and his oppoent, Joe Biden.

Look I follow politics pretty closely. I know how both sides voted on these issues. You would have a hard time to not see this attack on Ryan as partisan. Is he perfect. No. Nor, is the republican party perfect. I do want what is best for all Americans and I don't see four more years of Obama as the answer. Will I regret Romney four years from now? Maybe. But I'd vote for you over Obama.

Not quite. The vast majority of republicans are worthless cunts; but every single democrat is a worthless cunt.

To put it another way: it is not democrat vs. republican, but rather, collectivist vs. individualist. The collectivists completely own the democrats, and mostly own the republicans. The collectivists completely own the leadership of both parties, and that's what counts.

So the democrats vs. republicans game is basically a complete sham, but that doesn't mean that both parties are the same. They're not.

He will help Obama win Florida in a landslide.

Don't know if I would want to take credit for a 14 year career in politics right now.  Don't know if I would take credit for that voting record either (voted in favor of TARP, TALF, NDAA, GM bailouts)  Talking about deficit reduction while voting for more spending seems a bit hypocritical.  Ahh, the smell of fascism,  mmm good.

To me the main issues in Ryan's Favor:

1)Elimination of the new entitlement,  Obamacare  (Voted to repeal each time this issue has come up and would break any tie in the senate to repeal)

2)Block granting of medicaid (no longer would be a Federal entitlement would allow each state to innovate), medical tort reform and interstate competitio, and conversion of medicare into an means tested voucher based program thus introducing price and competition into medical care considerations for individuals.

Against him:

3)Like Romney he's a warmonger who never saw a defense budget too large or wasteful or a foreign intervention too outrageous.

4)Voted for TARP and GM bailout, too friendly with the FIRE economy (but so is Obama)

In light of points 1 and 2, and 3,4 I think the choice is clear   (Ron Paul, of course then no compromise is necessary)  But seriously remember:

Change is incremental-the welfare state didn't arise overnight, dismantling it and restoring individual responsibility won't occur rapidly and without compromise either, but we need to start somewhere.  If we become more like Europe we are really doomed.  If you are dependent on the state or in debt you are a slave with limited options.  Develop your talents and ability, independence and sense of responsibility and don't expect politicians to save the day.

Sat, 08/11/2012 - 17:21 | 2697843 Lednbrass

Things are to the point where incremental change cannot and will not prevent meltdown and implosion.

We are already like Europe- 46 of 50 states get back more from than they send to Uncle Sugar and it is all financed with ever growing piles of debt. If interest rates go up the debt playments blow apart, and if they do not the entire social security and pensions systems blow apart.

There is no way out any more, the last hope of that ended years ago.

"Maybe you haven't noticed the fleet gathering in the gulf?"

This should be front and center on everybody's mind right now.  Nothing else even compares in seriousness.  The Middle Eastern war is going to escalate into something much bigger.  Possibly WWIII. Very possibly WWIII.

I'm not crazy about Mitt and the GOP crew but compared to the really real crazies that constitute the Dems led by Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid, Maxine Waters, and all the other incredibly incomnpetent, Communist/Progessive nut jobs of the Democratic Party we really don't have a choice on who to vote for.

We are worried (rightly so) about TSHTF financially but that catastrophic event pales when compared to WWIII. Ryan, whether a good or bad VP pick, is moot.  We are faced with either Romney or Obama to lead us in what will very likely be the fight of our lives.  Think about that when contemplating where you will put your "X" in November.

Does this mean war?  If not, it means closer to war - with Paul Ryan and his total commitment to the Israeli foreign policy.

A Romney/Ryan combination is a war compact for the Middle East.

Voted YES on making the PATRIOT Act permanent. (Dec 2005)

Commitment to unbreakable U.S.-Israel bond. (Mar 2010)

Here are Ryan’s positions on Israel which parrot AIPAC:

Paul Ryan on Israel

“America has no better friend in the Middle East than the nation of Israel. Not only is Israel the region’s only fully functioning democracy, with a government based on popular consent and the rule of law, but it is also a valuable ally against Islamic extremism and terrorism.”

.Sponsored and Cosponsored Legislation

Resolution relating to Israel - Cosponsor

Recognizing the 62nd anniversary of the independence of the State of Israel, and reaffirming unequivocal support for the alliance and friendship between the United States and Israel.

Resolution recognizing Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza. - Cosponsor

Recognizing Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza, reaffirming the United States' strong support for Israel, and supporting the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

United States-Israel Rocket and Missile Defense Cooperation and Support Act - Cosponsor

Authorizes the President to provide assistance to the government of Israel for the procurement, maintenance, and sustainment of the Iron Dome Short Range Artillery Rocket Defense System for purposes of intercepting short-range rockets, missiles, and mortars launched against Israel.

Israel and Iran - Cosponsor

Condemns the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran for its: (1) threats to annihilate the United States and Israel; (2) support of international terrorism; and (3) incitement of genocide of the Israeli people. Supports using all means to persuade the government of Iran to stop building and acquiring nuclear weapons. Reaffirms the U.S. bond with Israel and pledges to work with the government of Israel and the people of Israel to ensure that their nation receives critical economic and military assistance, including missile defense capabilities, needed to address the Iranian threat. Supports Israel's right to use all means necessary to confront and eliminate nuclear threats posed by Iran.

Israel and Hamas - Cosponsor

Condemning the ongoing Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli civilians by Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist organizations, and for other purposes.

Yeah interesting pick with Ryan. Mitt's courting the Tea Partiers without openly doing it. He has someone that's gone through the fire with fighting the Unions. He's certainly head and shoulders a better option than Biden.

But yeah on the downside.. TARP, TALF, etc. etc.

Just wonder when the gloves will start coming off between the Red and Blue teams.

Odd that neither have any military experience.

Ryan talks the talk of a small government fiscal conservative. Unfortunately his ACTIONS are the exact opposite.

But hey it is Washington, everyone speaks out of one side of their mouth and acts out of the other.

Nice that his only 5 banks in his top 20 sponsors. A hedge fund is his number one sponsor: Elliot Management. At least Goldman ranks ahead of Koch Industries in top 20 sponsors.

Lots of closet dems on this thread--who would have guessed.  Alternative to changing parties in the WH, more (lots more) executive mandates, reappointment of the Chairsatan, double down on fiscal stimulus, wholesale retirement of 30% of the practicing physicians in this country and 100% guarantee of VAT for those who pay income taxes.  Aside from that, go ahead and throw a tantrum because Romney-Ryan doesn't immediately promise to get rid of the Fed, DOE, Dept. of Ag, Dept. of Homeland Security day one.  I think Romney's choice of Ryan is more than a hat tip to the Tea Party and is a tell for all the things that can't be overtly articulated because of the propensity of the dems to twist and lie.

The original leader of the Tea Party, Ron Paul, is against undeclared wars of aggression and Empire. The Tea Party movement was co-opted by people like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin and Sean Hannity and Dick Armey and Paul Ryan; every grassroots movement worth its salt is co-opted, if possible and with the help of the media, by the status quo.

James E. Miller of the Ludwig von Mises Institute of Canada writes on ZH today: “The institutional predation of the state is supported by a kind of war on reason fought by those who seek most fervently to maintain the exploitive status quo. The objective is enough consent on the part of the people to overwhelm any high-spirited protests. While independent and intellectual criticism is the state’s worst enemy, unthinking acceptance is its greatest ally…

“All it takes to reverse such destructive thinking (judgment is relative based on whodunnit) is the realization that state authority deserves no pass in moral scrutiny. Withdrawing consent comes next on the path to a free society.”

Several things sure about the future of America, regardless of who wins:

Another false flag attack or HAARP induced catastrophe; martial law; more financial crimes against the 99% (all paper assets of the sheeple get Corzined); FEMA camps or death for all opposition; massive starvation (Agenda 21), Constitution totally subordinate to UN dictat.

Obviously the ravings of a madman, right?  Just connect the dots of Obama's EOs, the NDAA, the militarization of local police agencies, the almost total abrogation of the Bill of Rights, and the suspension of the Rule of Law as it applies to the 1%, and you might just see the big picture.

Being a democrat from Texas back then was the same as being a Tea Party Patriot today. While testifying before Congress about something or other, John L. Will be interesting to see if Ryan's view on Ayn Rand will get much play in MSM.  According to Poltico, he gave out Atlas Shrugged to his interns and cites Rand for the reason he got involved in public service.  Then early this year he rejected her Atheist philsophy.  See Politico Arcicle  http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/79597.html

One certainly can not be associated with an Atheist philosphy and run on a presedential ticket.  My guess is that he leans heavily towards objectivism but publicly rejected her philosophy when he knew he was being considered as VP.  If nothing else, I would love to see some of the Atlas Shrugged concepts make it into the presedential race - even though MSM will squash any and all ideas relating to individual liberty, self-reliance, and fact based objectivity.

FACTS: whatever your political persuasion is, to get the debt down to manageable levels (~ 50% of GDP) there will have to be a 1.5 Trillion or 1,500 Billion ANNUAL adjustment to the fiscal budget for at least 30 years!!

Any combination of revenue increases, spending reductions, or program eliminations that add up to 1,500 Billion PER YEAR will be required to get the house in order, OR the Bond vigilantes take over, spike interest rates to the moon, the dollar crashes, inflation hyper accelerates, and the Dollar no longer the world's reserve currency.

It isn't about politics, folks, that luxury has passed us by a long time ago.

What great choices: a lier and an idiot running for President. Regardless of who wins we can expect the same outcomes, sure they'll use different rhetoric and take different paths but in the end they will continue to destroy the country by making the rich richer and the middle class - gone!

I distrust all of them regardless of party, it should be clear by now that neither party can fix the country and that isn't their intention. More war, less rights, less money, higher cost to everything - this is what we can expect over the coming decade regardless of the political puppets that are used to execute the oligarch policies.

I wonder how many dicks Paul Ryan has sucked, and I mean that iterally as well as figuratively. Zero integrity from the cheese head or his new boss - the idiot tax cheat. Thanks God Obama's administration is not a bunch of thieves and tax cheats [/sarc off]. Obama won't make an issue of Mittens taxes, because it would mean more auditing of his income and investments - which are very likely something he doesn't want out in the open.

I'd vote for anybody that will stop the meaningless wars but that won't happen, instead we are very likely to see increased hostilities - everywhere in the world. Clearly, this is the path our Gubmint has chosen. Using War to mask the underlying problems works, always has and will again - especially here in America. Doesn't take but a false flag to get Americans ready (and wanting) to kill. Let's face it, what good is building weapons systems if you can't use them?

I can no longer support any politician that has bought into the idea that certain corporations must be saved by the government or the whole economy will melt down. They are feeding the TBTF mentality and making the problem worse. They are only delaying the problem much like BB has done with QE.  There are other things but this is one of my biggest gripes because it also shows something real important about that politician, that he/she thinks that government is the solution, even when they are talking pretty about the private sector and making government smaller. In other words, they are full of BS. Their actions are not backing up their words.

"The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function." — F. Scott Fitzgerald

Hi Jam,

I don't know if you'll see this reply, sorry I didn't make it earlier. But anyway...

I want to let you know that sometimes I pull my hair out trying to figure out what someone is trying to say when they make a statement, then seemingly turn right around and say something that contradicts what they just said!

I think after reading your post again today perhaps I understand a little better, and I like your F. Scott Fitzgerald quote.

However I hope you'll consider the following thought. If we are not really being given a choice again this time(which I agree with), then personally I would have a very strong tendency to say it... does not ..."really matter".

Regards

Been on the road and out of touch the last several days - thanks for the follow up note Tin Soldier.   Seems we are in the same realm of thinking all things considered.

This is great... Romney found a male Sarah Pailin.  The USA can only get the government it deserves, which is not much.

These actors will take the stage and deliver their lines as scripted.

Debates, relentless coverage, PAC ads, and then the "election".

The curtain will fall and the audience will trundle out to the same reality.

As always, the choice is between a douche and a turd sandwich. This year, the douche is black and the turd sandwich comes with two slices of white bread. Enjoy.

LOL, and that is precisely what it is.

"And here comes the Chicago Wonderboy off the ropes with a Flying Kenyan Nutcrusher to Dollar Bill, Dollar Dill is reeling! Oh no! Chicago is going to finish him off, he is getting a chair... but wait! Wonderboy's manager Blythe Blankfein Rockefeller comes up behind him and hits him with her gold encrusted cane she uses to walk from the injuries she took from her ambush by The Regulators! Oh the humanity! Blythe is helping Dollar Bill get up! Now he dropkicks the Chicago Wonderboy through the ropes! And here comes Crazy Joe, Wonderboy's tag team partner from the dressing room, what will happen next?!"

The marks in the stands are riveted and whatever the script is, Chicago Wonderboy and Dollar Bill are having dinner and drinks after the show while Blythe picks up the tab and services them both later that evening...
