President Obama: "If You've Got A Business - You Didn't Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen"

Tyler Durden's picture

Presented without commentary (highlights ours)

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.  There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.  I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.  That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together.  That’s how we funded the GI Bill.  That’s how we created the middle class.  That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam.  That’s how we invented the Internet.  That’s how we sent a man to the moon.  We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea.  You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.  (Applause.)

"If You've Got A Business - You Didn't Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen"

Dear Mr. President:

If you have taxes to spend- you did not earn that. Someone else did.

p.s. Someone else is going on strike, for a very long time.  Good luck.

Once again, you’ve cut to the chase, Kayman, proof that genius is the ability to reduce the complicated to the simple, leveling Obama and the socialists with a one-two punch of humor laced with intellect.

Happy Sunday! my friend.

Sociopathetic jive, how the fuck would these career politicians have any idea how business is built? None of them gamed the system on the own either, they used the mob, the CIA helpers, whatever was around to get them through life without ever having created any REAL value, other than creating crisis for the people.

Well, that's easy Bob. Simply make shit up about death panels, birth certificates, grade school indoctrination, faux McCarthyism, etc., and indirectly suggest the president is a communist Muslim nigger terrorist from outer space or Africa or whatever, and that he's some sort of devilish villain character who wants to "take you to a place to get slaughtered."*

Then pay millions to sharp-tongued, shameless carnival barkers who are willing to subvert true journalism and compromise their professional integrity, all for the chance to prove their allegiance to various capitalist super-pigs like Roger Ailes.

Now, depending on how dumb and gullible the audience is, some or all of this shit (see first paragraph) might actually be believed, especially if that audience (like the Tea Party) is eagerly looking for a reason to HATE him. They can't hate him because he's a nigger, 'cuz that sounds too racist and subtracts from their credibility on actual political arguments. So now the Faux News viewers can replace the word "nigger" with all the political villains in history, like Hitler or various communist dictators who are universally loathed. (Because let's be honest here, referring to Obama as Hitler is just a subversive way of calling him a nigger, right? George W did far, far more to undermine the sanctity of our freedom and/or the Constitution and no one ever called him Hitler, Marx or whatnot).

A particularly shrewd carnival barker on Faux News can even turn this shameless propaganda into a 60 minute pseudo history lesson, complete with chalk boards and flow charts. Now, all the racist Tea Party freaks can hide their subconscious nigger animosity behind the smokescreen of being born-again Constitutionalists and American history buffs. Like zombies on command, these born-again Constitutionalists rose from their Lazy-Boy recliners, pushed their Swanson Salisbury Steak TeeVee dinners to the side, and for the first time in their lives, marched through their communities to the drumbeat of their carnival barking masters.

I want my country back! At age 62, I suddenly care about the Constitution! Amuuurica is under attack by evil progressives and GAYS!

Anyway, circling back on topic, it's really easy to get the little guy to vote for a particular candidate, even if that candidate represents an ideology or promotes policy that makes life for the little guy worse. Distract him with death panels. Scare him with faux-McCarthyism. Find a little known MILF from nowhere USA, dress her up in a "Sexy Flight Attendant from Piedmont Airlines" costume,** and have her talk about moose hunting and Jesus.

Don't worry about the little guy, Bob. There's a massive, multi-billion dollar propaganda machine that's got him covered - brain washed, fluffed dried and neatly stacked on the Murdoch pedestal.

There's too much truth in all you say.  Yet, as you say:

That was Clinton's great stroke for fascism.

Problem is that Obama's not worth fighting for; think about it, if he's the oligarch's worst case.

Now that's genius

If we're going down, I just as soon it were Rmoney that gets the blame at this point.  I'm thinking of voting for him just for that.

How is it hurtful to offer advice, we all need advice from time to time, i dont post on here to contradict others, its more of a sharpening stone for my mind.

I offer advice and i read others advice, its by debating the merit of the argument that you educate youself and others regardless of who wins the argument.

An i think shouting 'fuck you obama' is a debasement of any argument you may wish to make, ZH is meant to be more than a bunch of people shouting fuck you at each other.

What worries me the most about our Liberal population is how utterly foolish they are to buy into the promises and hope of their leaders while never fully considering the consequences.  "Yes Mr Politician, take my friends taxes to give me free healthcare and effectively double the power the central government has over the whole country, what could go wrong?"  They live in this fantasy that all their commie policies can possibly do is make things better because that's all their handlers condition them to believe.  We're doomed because these liberals are everywhere and they don't even know how utterly foolish their "hope" is.

You used the quotes correctly, that's for sure.  I don't want Romney.  I want him more than I do a far left commie like Obama but that's not saying much.  With liberals there is literally nothing that is impossible to pass and have their SCOTUS stooges deem it constitutional as long as they want it.

With Romney though, and I still don't know why he got nominated, but at least he's consistent on State vs Federal rights.  That's a real tangible thing to have "hope" in but that too could be fleeting.  On a constitutional basis, Romneycare was sound since it was enacted at the state level.  It was the state doing what a state should, keep it within the state.  Time will tell if Romney is just another Bush in terms of spending but i doubt it if enough libertarians and tea partiers get elected, they wont let him.

Very totalitarian.

The Department and Health and Human Services announced the agency will issue waivers for the federal work requirement of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program — considered a central facet of welfare reform in 1996 — Thursday.

The “Information Memorandum” states that the agency will be issuing waivers for TANF’s work participation requirements for parents and caretakers as a way to find new approaches to better employment outcomes.

Now you're moving the goal-posts and you've slipped up here, because, as you astutely and accidentally note, Obama and his coterie are indeed much more like (because they are in fact a brand of) contemporary Marxians than classic Marxists - of any "school" or period - up to that which emerged in US academia beginning around the time of the Vietnam War.

Every week Obama shows he doesn't care about the constitution and the law. By giving a million Illegals a free pass and work permits when just a year ago he said he didn't have the power. By removing from CIA and FBI training manuals anything that mentions Islamic supremist as our enemy. By giving Eric Holder protection from prosecutiion on Fast and furious or from releasing documents that would certainly prove that Obama and Holder are much deeper in that coverup then they want us to believe.  Just a few examples of Obama acting like a dictator and not a president.

The free market generates cartels? Banking cartels are the worst of 'em? Childhood brainwashing victims edit the outside world so they don't have to humble themselves and admit they were wrong? People are too proud/self-righteous generally? The Private sector is composed of individual contractors, small businesses, monopolies and cartels, yet people still talk about it as though it is homogeneous? Americans elect businessmen to positions in government and expect what??? The world is a business, Mr. Beale-- it has been since man crawled out of the slime. And The biggest of the big don't like competition. There are ways around that. Dick Cheney ran the world for 8 years. Now Obama (read banking puppet) runs the (shit) show.

List examples.

If you are ging to talk about free market cartels, please list examples from the US between 1875 and 1913, which was the year we made the transition from a free market to a mixed market.  If you wish to talk about problems with the mixed market, then list examples of mixed market cartels in the US between 1914 and 2007.  If you want to talk about problems with fascist cartels, then list examples in the US between 2008 and today.  I don't know the dates for transitions between the various systems as they occured outside the US, so I ask that we limit discussion to the US for now.

Sun, 07/15/2012 - 12:43 | 2617524 THX 1178
THX 1178's picture

I was aksing questions. Why did the transition from free market to mixed market take place? I understand that is when the Federal Reserve Act was signed into law... It was written by bankers who didn't want a free market. That is my whole point. The point at which the cartel is generated is the point at which it stops being a free market. Cartels are not generated by the mixed market, the mixed market is generated by cartels (whose components are generated by free markets.)

Your questions were incomplete clauses, the first of which seemed to indicate that you believe that free markets generate cartels.  I merely asked that you list examples, and bounded the discussion to the time frame where the US had something closely resembling a free market.

Sun, 07/15/2012 - 13:07 | 2617621 THX 1178
THX 1178's picture

Let's not split hairs here. A free market cannot have a cartel in it. The moment it has a cartel it ceases being free. Also, listing cartels is tricky business because they are not monopolies-- they do not have names/titles, etc. This is for obvious reasons, if the people knew there was no competiton, or the regulators knew... well... the jig would be up. It is imperative that a cartel keep its operations clandestine! Absolutely imperative! Also, since cartels don't play by the rules, they are not cut and dry as a monopoly. But the Federal Reserve is a cartel. The military industrial complex is a cartel. The Big 4 banks in the US are intimately connected to the FED (BofA, citi, JPM, Goldman). Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon, Chevron, and BP contitute a cartel. The business of their "business" takes place behind the scenes so as to appear separate compaines who compete... but every cartel is different. Some get the gov't involved, and some don't. It depends on your connections. But cartels always existed, whether they be bean cartels or sugar cartels or coffee cartels or oil or banking, or tea or spice. They don't have names though... thats the tricky part. The list goes on.

Sun, 07/15/2012 - 13:22 | 2617671 tmosley
tmosley's picture

Yes, it gets easier and easier to find cartels as you slide down the slippery slope of mixed markets from freedom to fascism.  Now that we are there, we find cartels in practically every major industry.  Whether banking, oil, automotive, financial, media related or any number of others.

There's elements of truth in what Obama says but he twists them. Reasonable people understand that fair taxes are a necessary condition for a modern technological state. Roads, infrastructure, courts are all things that have been helped by government intervention.

The problem is that the US government has also become the primary conduit for robbing Peter to pay Paul (for Paul's votes) and down that road lies ruin.

Very few people will disagree that others have helped build businesses by creating the pre-conditions to try. But in the end, any individual business exists because some specific person or persons took a risk. And having taken that risk, they deserve to profit from that risk if they succeeded (and to go bankrupt if they failed). Success and failures are both natural parts of the capitalist system. The primary aim of government should be keeping the market clean, free, and free of fraud. Instead government now becomes a stick up artist and an accomplice in oligarhical fraud. And yet Obama tries to use elements of truth to hide his corporatist agenda. The irony is immense.

Obama continues to talk about doing everything for the middle class. But what he really wants is the middle class to fail so more end up dependant on the Government. Anytime you raise taxes on anyone, it eventually trickles down to the middle class. their the ones who pay the bulk of the taxes along with the rich. 50% don't pay any income tax and those are the ones Obama is counting on for votes. Them plus the dead and Illegals.

I don't agree with what Obama said but i do agree with the sentiment.

Nobody succeeds or fails as an individual. It is always a collective effort.

With each successive year US citizens are losing their social-economic mobility. Yet all buy into the myth that they to can be a millionaire. They buy into a society that is designed to reinforce that premise.

For the record, i am NOT pro Obama. I am not PRO either party or either candidate.

But i do think the notion of American Exceptionalism is racist, and false. The narrative is designed to reinforce a system that at best works for 20% of US citizens.

Such utter bullshit.  Business owners have to overcome the incompetence and laziness of others in order to get anything done.  Were that I, as a small business owner, COULD have done anything by myself, things would have been much easier. I don't give 1/1000000th of a shit what anyone else did to "help" me, because I FUCKING PAID THEM TO DO IT.  Did they pay me?  No.  They stole from me.

Obama: "Government built the roads."  Bullshit.  Government APPROPRIATED the roads (seizing land through eminent domain, and labor by appropriating the claims on labor that rightfully belonged to others).  Same with every other damn thing they ever "did".  If they just saw to the common DEFENSE and regulated trade BETWEEN the states, everything would have been furnished by the free market, with an additional scalar of money not lost to the salaries of government bureaucrats.

What an idiot we have for a president. All those idiots that voted for him in the first place, hopefully will realize their mistake but I doubt many will.

Oh and Obama shows his knowledge of creating jobs by telling states they no longer need to require those collecting welfare to look for work or maybe take some form of training to continue to collect an unemployment check. Obama realizes the more collecting a welfare check the more votes he will get.  Imagine paying states to advertise foodstamps.

Just because government provides the services that were previously provided by the free market does not mean that the free market can't provide those services again, once the government gets out of the way.  You are defending government granted monopolies because you can't imagine that there could be other sources for so-called utilities, and you further assume that if the government stepped out, that those services would simply disappear.

Now I am stating that you are an idiot, idiot.

Isn't that exactly what happened in Iraq when services were destroyed?!  We saw lots of entreprenuers setting up generators right and left and running power lines to fill in where government ceased to function.  Water came in on private carts. And obviously you've never been in Nepal where entreprenuers have set up private internet cafe's and battery recharging stations in the high Himalayas, operation of which requires the continuous transport of fuel which is  brought up in 5-Gal. containers on the back of yaks. No "community provided services" there either.

Let's see your entire business plan for powering up and providing water to the community using private market only.It would be interesting to see how much you would need and how many workers.

I don't see where Iraq is a good example. The suffering there is incomprehensible to populations that have been comfortable their whole lives. And I can hardly believe that water coming "in on private carts" is going to be enough in a desert community, except for the "fittest" and we all know who they will be.

Since we the taxpayers paid 3/4 of a Trillion dollars on the US Embassy in Iraq, then we should have no problem financing their power and water until "private interests" can do the job for everyone; since we destroyed much of their infrastructure under false pretenses.

Sounds like you need to move to CHINDIA where at least if these fucking fuck-hole 'workers' are going to outright steal from you, they'll only steal a dollar per hour.

Jeezus H fucking christ dude.. it's a wonder you get anyone working for you at all. I'm no 'O'-pologist. But your big problem is being a stupid lazy bitch that comes up with a business model in which you can't DO EVERYTHING. (<-- I don't entirely believe that, BUT, that's as idiotic as saying everyone is incompetent and lazy). Most business can be run with more equity in a partnership (even if a worker only has an extremely minimal stake).

My issue with this discussion is that the corporatocracy pays c-suite (themselves) as if THEY DO DO everything. If somebody is incompetent to a degree - YOU TRAIN THEM!Something corporations stopped doing decades ago. Small biz owners work their asses off and I'm not sure why everyone came out of the woodwork - hoping deep down they qualify for John Galt's Valley of 'We don't need anyone!'. It's a fucking fairy-tale people. Haven't you read enough of the SHTF books to realize 'community' is a WAY better option than the 'lone wolf'. An early grave awaits anyone trying to do it all.

I have a business and work within a large corporation so experience both sides. I don't STEAL from somebody because I choose to work there, they profit plenty off of my work ethic and knowledge. You act as if you NEVER worked for anyone during your upbringing - Mitt, is that YOU?!?! (I know, he may have had jobs before, I just don't care to research it, and it sounded funny).
