President Obama: "If You've Got A Business - You Didn't Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen"

Tyler Durden's picture

Presented without commentary (highlights ours)

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.  There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.  I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.  That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together.  That’s how we funded the GI Bill.  That’s how we created the middle class.  That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam.  That’s how we invented the Internet.  That’s how we sent a man to the moon.  We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea.  You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.  (Applause.)

Dear Mr. Obama

I used to be a bussinessman and it didn't work out quite that well.  For a time it did, and you are right, I didn't do it on my own.

When it was going down, I made sure the people who helped me would be hired by the consortium which bought my business for twenty cents on the dollar.

Who took the hit?

Why me of course, all by my lonesome.....

If you are in it together when the going is good, you should also share the burden on the way down as most start ups don't make it past three years.  For community organizers, senators and presidents, they don't have to worry about these little things do they?

Not just here. Remember they have a web presence czar (or whatever the hell they call him)

Any site that is to the right of DU gets attention in proportion to its traffic.

Those who have companies would counter, except they are too busy trying to run their businesses in a sea of red tape.

Why do you waste your time parroting idiotic cliches? How much of your thoughts are contaminated by such propaganda? Or do you lobby for the alcohol industry? The tremendous social cost of alcohol is what politicians call 'job creation' - it requires more cops, doctors, lawyers and undertakers. Predators depend on alcohol.

More people have died from Viagra than cannabis, and Viagra has only been around for 13 years. Cannabis has been around since day 1.

Meanwhile cannabis, the stuff that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are written on, has been used directly for millenia as medicine, fuel, food, and to make books, rope, clothes and sails. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew it, used it & shared it with their fellow conspirators. Marijuana can be thought producing. As Bill Hicks said, all the substances that make us realize how badly we are getting fucked are illegal, while all the ones that make us stupid are accepted and not even identified as the drugs they are - keep drinking beer, rednecks. Marijuana cures cancer directly, but you wouldn't know this because Nixon's gestapo DEA suppressed the original research in the 70s, and again when this was rediscovered in Spain in 2001.

"Very few Americans, even in these post-Watergate days, understand how Nixon set up his very own Special Secret elite police. Under the guise of "drug control" this Orwellian coup was accomplished with the approval of middle·aged liberals. It was so simple. The Narc budget jumped from 22 million to 140 million... Constitutional rights were suspended and martial law (no-knock, stop-and-frisk, curfew, etc.) was imposed selectively on one easily identifiable segment of the population.. Fear descended on the land. The spokesmen for the counter-culture were arrested, harassed, silenced. The press cooperated completely…" Dr. Tim Leary psychiatrist, philosopher, adventurer, psychonaut, professor, genius

Well, it is true everyone contributes but Obama's statement does raise questions.

How come businesses are strugging with a huge percentage of owners taking little or no earnings?

How is it that attempting to grow is so fraught with regulatory delays and costs?

How is it that those enjoying illustrious salaries and pensions are so often employed in lifelong posts in government or their nominees, like banks or police forces?

Theories are wonderful but the Devil always lurks in the details.

Still believing discredited shit?

This is the original Gore quote on CNN:

I'll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be. But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.[52]

Newt Gingrich stated:

"In all fairness, it's something Gore had worked on a long time. Gore is not the Father of the Internet, but in all fairness, Gore is the person who, in the Congress, most systematically worked to make sure that we got to an Internet, and the truth is -- and I worked with him starting in 1978 when I got [to Congress], we were both part of a "futures group" -- the fact is, in the Clinton administration, the world we had talked about in the '80s began to actually happen."[64]

Sorry if the facts don't jive with what you think is the truth....

We could nitpick, but the overall idea is sound. We're a social animal, nobody makes it on his own. The only thing that people should be asking themselve is : will his actions reflect his words?

his words are a precursor to taking money from the last remaining productive elements of society and giving it to the non-productive ones. this is state socialism at it's finest.

before corporations destroyed small communities, people got along just fine. the reliance on big government was fabricated by dislocating people from their individual productiveness.

americans lost their skills, their inventiveness and ingenuity because they were priced out of the market by cheap goods forced on them by proxy. once they became reliant on a larger mechanism for their survival and livelihood, the squeeze was in play.

a social animal can be many things, two rats in a maze, a barn, or a field.  the problem is perceptions are carefully managed, so everyone forgot what it was like to live in a field.

The more populist he sounds the more votes he gets, simple math. I don't give a shit about who will win the coming election, because I know the country will not be run any differently. The packaging will change and Gitmo will stay open for business. The U.S can't afford to change course, just like the roman empire couldn't. What I was saying was, nobody makes it on his own, but I don't think he's policy will change much. Elect who the fuck you want, I live an Ocean away from you and I'll suffer the consequences all the same. Just stop throwing a tantrum and do something about it. Politicians come & go, your problem is your political system.

My first time writing to/on ZH after reading and following for about 24 months. I could not let today's opportunity pass by. My grandfather worked the PA coal mines and died at 36. My father, born in 1908 paid a dollar to buy a box of matches to sell door to door; the company selling the matches guaranteed that the matches would sell, they did not. He walked so many miles he wore out a pair of shoes and then fought with the company for his single $1 back and won. He went on to be successful in several companies he built. Many years later I wore out two pairs of winged tipped shoes in Manhattan in commercial real estate retail leasing. I guess I should thank Mr. Obama for the pavement because the "deals" that we worked on that were successful were tough and few that made it --- but it was my steam that made it.

Sure, "some" people work hard and we stand on the shoulders (maybe) of others that worked hard too. And the point is that we should now be profuse in our gratitude and giving to others. How presumtuous.

I will show gratitude when the strong in us stand up and clean up Dodge City. Until then, I will thank myself for the hard work that I do and appreciate the same in others. Mr. Obama does best when he takes airplane trips over major cities using our money for fuel, fuel that we foolishly provided.

Best to all.

Poster child for modern economic system: PREDATORY STATE.

Today, the signature of modern American capitalism is neither benign competition, nor class struggle, nor an inclusive middle-class utopia. Instead, predation has become the dominant feature—a system wherein the rich have come to feast on decaying systems built for the middle class.

Middle Class? Here's What's Destroying Your Future by Charles Hugh Smith

Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 8:36 pm

According to the conventional account, the Great American Middle Class has been eroded by rising energy costs, globalization, and the declining purchasing power of the U.S. dollar in the four decades since 1973. While these trends have certainly undermined middle-class wealth and income, there are five other less politically acceptable dynamics at work:

  1. The divergence of State/private vested interests and the interests of the middle class
  2. The emergence of financialization as the key driver of profits and political power
  3. The neofeudal “colonization” of the “home market” by ascendant financial Elites
  4. The increasing burden of indirect “taxes” as productive enterprises and people involuntarily subsidize unproductive, parasitic, corrupt, but politically dominant vested interests
  5. The emergence of crony capitalism as the lowest-risk, highest-profit business model in the U.S. economy

No it was created to decentralize computer operations/communications in case of a nuclear attack. After awhile Scientists at Universities were allowed on. It wasn't until Tim Berniers Lee, wrote the hype linking text function found in all browsers which the  University of Illionois used as a basis  create the first Browser (mosaic)   which Marc Anderseen stole the  the Source Code to and got venture capitalist to invest in HIS browser which started the Gold Rush with the IPO of Netscape in 1995.

See how the transition was made from public to private. Since I am a small company owner who made a living for the last 18 years give or take off the Internet, I'm grateful to all the players involved. Mainly the 60s version of the Internet that made it to the 90s version of the Internet on Public dollars.

I'm sure the University of Illinois wish they could have gotten a royalty from Netscape which ended up being being Sold to AOL (heh) for 7.8b but in the wild spirit of the internet, the bright high wired high bandwidth pioneers believed all Software should be free under the GNU license so the U of I sat there helplessly as Anderseen and Jim Barksdale (formerly of FedEx) made billions for what was nothing more than a free piece of software that the U of I  handed to Microsoft which became their first Browser despite Bill Gate's fervent belief that no software should EVER be given away, apparently that didn't apply to Microsoft taking it.

As for Time Berniers Lee "The Father of The Internet" as we know it meaning one didn't have to be a geek to get on . He has worked in Public Service. The Squid famously smelled money after Morgan Stanley's Mary Meeker started crying when Netscape tripled on it's first day "OMG how am I going to explain this to my bosses". Apparently she found a way and the obscure  little Churchwoman ( Gilda Radner)  turned analyst soon became "one of the most Powerful women  In the World " screamed Fortune Magazine  as she made 15 million a year for basically saying Thumbs up to any piece of shit that MS called a company and took public.

Sure there was Comp u-serve , Prodigy, and AOL in the 80s and early 90s that many of us used, but hey, those fucks charged by the hour. This was all you could eat for $20 a month and a 28K modem. So that's how the private industry got a hold of the internet. Pretty much like everything else that has happened since. They fucking stole it. HAHAHA

My fellow Entrepreneurs. Please don't get self consumed with how Awesome you think you are. Just as Traders get the occasional large scale facials (Think Whales n Shit)  from the market, company founders also experience many failures usually after they become so impressed with themselves they begin to believe in their own bullshit. "I Started this. I Founded this. It's ALL Mine. Employees Eat Shit. I own your Ass".

All the way until employees leave and start their own company in what has become a long lived tradition , they steal his or her accounts and his product/service that he stole from someone else. Suddenly one doesn't look so awesome as they are flung off the capitalist airplane at 32 feet per second squared after spending too much time jacking off to themselves via the bathroom mirror.

Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Well, government did create the internet, especially after the Artificial Intelligent IT landed in Roswell, NM in the 1950s.

Wait, what?

I must say, the corporate machine has brainwahsed some of you quite well.  The whole weath maker vs laborer argument is really incredibly trite to someone who truely understands the type of manipulation of markets, currency, and overall behavioral attitude of society.

Arguments over deserves the most green pieces of paper or who is needed to make this paper magically appear are all really futal if in the end, 99% of us lose the sociakl contracts we worked and fought so hard to get.

Not so. The network was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA for use by its projects at universities and research laboratories in the US.

They only funded the project.

I was visiting UCLA 1984 and my future brother in law was working on his thesis and I saw my first computer connected to a dot matrix printer and an acoustic coupler.

And what was it used for, battling other students across the nation at Dungens and Dragons.

The question is not whether research a government spends money on can be very useful to society.  The question is whether they are more efficient or effective than the people they took the money from.   The question is,  if what they think is important, is really more important than what someone in the private sector believes.  The question is do we believe in the power of monopolies, or the power of falsification?   What discoveries have been foregone because someone in private business didn't have the resources to explore?

The left routinely says that government has to spend money on big projects because nobody in the private sector has the funds...OF COURSE NOT...you keep taking it.

The president does have a point.  There are parts of society that make it possible for successful people to become successful.  Here's where his idea breaks down.  The business man prior to, during, and/or after his business venture is part of the very collective that created his success.  Every tax payer, businessman, mom, dad, old person, mentor, etc. is part of this "village".  The businesses that takes interns, mentor youth, and give employees time off for charity work are all part of this "village" that create success.  My point is that many people make the mistake of seperating the successful from the support structure, and that is a logical fallacy.  The successful therefore do NOT owe their success to others, they owe it to themselves by utilizing the very tools they helped to create.  Also for those entrenched with the idea that success is a result of "every man" how does that work with the idyll who collect wealth redistributed to them?  Do they build roads?  Do they teach skills?  How do "they" contribute?  "They" don't pay taxes with money "they" earned - "they" pay taxes with the taxes you paid to help them survive.  Exactly how is this helpful regarding individual success?  You also run into the problem of the old adage that you can "Lead a horse to water, but can't make him drink".  For all the collectivists, get off your keyboard, go start a business, and employ the unemployed if it is so fracking easy and the elements of success have already been supplied by the rest of us.

I am not in anything with this son of a communist whore and his American hating dad.   This country was not built on that phrase.  Now the USSR and China was built on that principle, but we were built on INDIVIDUAL rights and principles.  Its about having a CHOICE and not being FORCED to participate.  Communist force everyone into the State's agenda.  It has to be obvious by that speech alone that this guy is a flaming communist.

He has nothing to thank me for because if I had my way, he would be in a prison cell right now as a traitor to his country and a breaker of the oath he swore to uphold.

I have nothing to thank him for or any of the DC bunch.  In my entire 34 years of life the gov has NEVER done anything for me and I don't want them to do anything except stay the hell out of my life.  The problem is they all have over stated their importance and think they need to constantly mess with people's lives, and the bunch of weak ass punks out there who are ether too lazy, too stupid, or too weak to be an AMERICAN man and stand on their own and cry out constantly for their big daddy government to help them and keep the pain away.

Where and when did government give Edison the idea on how to make the light bulb. A private citizen without a government subsidy created a business that produced an invention that made him successful.  How did the government make that happen?  It didn't!  Only free people with the freedom to use their minds can create these things not government. The government may at some point finances certain inventions for other purposes, but the government did not come up with the invention that would give them other products. How was the first bow and arrow invented. Like all other technologies. By necessity.

"I never perfected an invention that i did not think about in terms of the service it might give others."  Thomas Alva Edison- Founder of General Electric

1876 was also the year that Thomas Alva Edison opened a laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he could explore the possibilities of the dynamo and other electrical devices that he had seen in the Exposition. Out of that laboratory was to come perhaps the greatest invention of the age - a successful incandescent electric lamp.

By 1890, Edison established the Edison General Electric Company by bringing his various businesses together.

During that period, a competitor emerged. The Thomson-Houston Company became a dominant electrical innovation company through a series of mergers led by Charles A. Coffin, a former shoe manufacturer from Lynn, Massachusetts.

As both businesses expanded, it had become increasingly difficult for either company to produce complete electrical installations relying solely on their own patents and technologies. In 1892, the two companies combined. They called the new organization the General Electric Company.

Several of Edison's early business offerings are still part of GE today, including lighting, transportation, industrial products, power transmission, and medical equipment. The first GE Appliances electric fans were produced at the Ft. Wayne electric works as early as the 1890s, while a full line of heating and cooking devices were developed in 1907. GE Aircraft Engines, the division's name only since 1987, actually began its story in 1917 when the U.S. government began its search for a company to develop the first airplane engine "booster" for the fledgling U.S. aviation industry. Thomas Edison's experiments with plastic filaments for light bulbs in 1893 led to the first GE Plastics department, created in 1930.

This is what Capitalism is.  The freedom to use your own mind for the purpose to benefit you and others.

The Preezy of the United Steezy is spewing leftist, Marxist, communistic crap and that is why the "false" left/right paradigm IS NOT FALSE. The left wants government.  The RIGHT wants FREEDOM.  The only way you have freedom is to have economic freedom.  Have at that you commies on ZH.  Especially YOU MDB/ or Let them Eat Rand

If this was truly a capitalistic system. GE would have failed and fallen Hard. Immelt would be out of a job and all those Chinese factories they've been investing in the last 12 years to avoid paying taxes in the US would be gone also. They also investing a Billion dollars annually to get them the best in-house strategies to avoid paying any taxes. So please tax the high tax arguments and stuff up your asses.

The idea that some of you Douche-Muffins admire these massive welfare queens and then go completely wacko over a food program for the people that GE affected either directly or indirectly. All the while, It has not provided one new net job in the USA in the last 12 years.

Obama appears, from this side of the pond, to be speaking nonsense.  He is trying to say that entrepreneurs require state services, like teachers and roads, in order to operate, so state systems should be accorded equal support and assistance.

But who created those state systems in the first place? They didn't just appear out of thin air. They were created by entrepreneurs initially, and then taken over by the state. I can't see a single thing that the state did first, and that entrepreneurs could not do better..

I don't see any reason for libertarians to get their panites in a twist over these comments.  Read it again.  He doesn't say that if you built a business "you didn't build that."  He says that government built roads and bridges, and the businessman who builds a business didn't build the roads and bridges.  Ergo, taxes to pay for the roads and bridges --- or the internet --- do not threaten business but, to the contrary, often enhance and create business opportunities.

I'm all for low taxes and small government.  I'll be voting for Ron Paul.  But Obama's speech is merely a reasonable retort to the truly inane opinions I've been seeing on some sites, including ZH.  The most inane one I've seen is that all taxes are theft.  If you believe that, and at the same time believe that you have a business that could survive more than a few months without a functioning government, please tell us where such a Utopia exists.

And most people forget that we pay for all of the Services.  Most of the Services are paid for thru Property Taxes, Gas Taxes for roads, the Fire Department, the Police Department, etc., thru the State.  The majority of the Services are provided by State Taxes and not Federal Taxes.

This is stated when we continue dumbing down the curriculum , granting social promotion to graduation and turning out an "educated" population that globally ranks in the second quintile.

Concerning Axelrods stronger middle class and the obama claim of developing a stronger middle class, a statement that can only be viable if one jumps down the rabbit hole, speaks to the White Rabbit and the rabbit says,"Socialism is the way"

The other party , the "stupid party" , is wriiten about today by Peggy Noonan who begins with ennui and ends with hope. Sometimes she is simply too naieve. She loses the essence of a collective United States population whose IQ barely touches three digits.

It is surely a carnival of buncombe as "H. L." Mencken stated.

Following the same logic flow that Obama's prompter does:

'If one puts a bullet between Obama's eyes, that one may be guilty of murder, but he didn’t get there on his own. He was educated in public schools, he used obamacare, he received tax credit as a student, he used the roads and bridges to travel, he used the public transportation... you get the idea. And because he used all of this, the government made this happen, thus the government is responsible for the murder too. But Obama leads the government, so Obama is guilty of his own murder, he should be arrested.' FAIL!

Obama should read Ayn Rand.

This is what happens when you get a parasite as president. He never had a real job and he never created anything to be proud of. Also, he can say this so openly now because the number of people that are receiving government handouts (which is stolen property) exceed by far the number of productive people. On a short term, US is fucked.

Good points, it's very easy to win from his arguments in a discussion, he's lucky he only has to read from his teleprompter to a crowd of morons.

If this was true then Russia and China would be way ahead of us on everything.   It is the free market that gave us funds for the governement, it was free market that gave us the production capacity, it is free market that gave the management and engineers.

If a man cuts down a tree to make a home or a chair or a deck or a pipe, or a boat, then just how exactly did the government help. Oh yeah the gov bought/stole the land with emminent domain to give you permission to cut down the tree that was protected by the EPA from terrorits like you with a eco-friendly handsaw so they can tax you on it later to create the FDA/NSA/NEA/FEMAcamp/DEA/CIA/TSA to make sure that you can sell one but to not make a profit cause its not fair that you put the effort in to cut down the tree to make things people want. Its just not FAIR.

If you catch a fish, who do you think created that fish and put it there?

Who made the lake and gave the enviroment around the lake?

Who stopped the lake from getting polluted and provided food for that fish?

We should sound the horn and pray to governent three times a day.

Yeah, and it seems to me that for the last few years it has been easier to start and keep a business going in China than in the US, from what I hear as a result of high US taxes and too many US regulations, and obviously lower salaries for workers in China.

What will the counterfeit "jews" do when it all comes tumbling down around them?  Change their names to chang and buy all the newspapers and movie studios in beijing?  Game's up, kikes.  It's a stalemate.  Nice match but you are now at a decidedly unenvious demographic position and in store for a WELL EARNED global pogrom.

The only thing that will stop barry x is a bullet in between the eyes.  IMO the military has the obligation to step in and deliver that.

The goverment did not create the Internet.  The government, with wealth seized from the citizens, funded mathemeticians, and engineers, who developed the internet protocols, using the principals of packet switching, whitch already existed.  The goverment, with wealth seized from the citizens, funded engineers, and technicians to build the first networks that used the internet protocols.  Since citizens tend to make better use of their own wealth, than the government, the internet protocols may have emerged earlier, if the goverment had not intervened.  It's called opportunity cost, and according to the government it does not exist.

what a clown.  big bad bama's electorate is the entitled, amongst the males you have 3 or 4 generations never had a job in their life.  thank god for rapping and basketball, they can foist that up as a way to make legit money and provide some 'hope'.  as for the 'change' - snap cards.

how would he know.  did he pay for his degrees, or did i?  i started working illegaly at 15 and paying taxes at 16.  and he can't show his transcripts.  did he really ever have a 'job' or was it handout affirmative action.

this country is finished.  enjoy life.  opportunity is gone.

THAT depends on the integrity of the "Republican-leaning" ZH posters.  Romney, if he is elected, may pursue milder forms of state capitalism, but the general lines of looting and fiat money will remain the same.

It will be the difference between racing towards the cliff at 90 mph and racing towards the cliff at 60 mph, only there might be some more jewelry present at the State Dinners if Romney is President.

Same fiat dollar. Same banksters-in-charge.

Let's see how upset ZH is three years from now if we are going through a faux-recovery with none of the underlying structural problems truly solved.
